EDITOR’S NOTE Issue 03 of Brighton Active is all about interactivity! Since launching the magazine at the start of the year, we’ve been inundated with emails from people all over Brighton and Hove telling us just how happy they are that a magazine with such an emphasis on taking part in local sports and activities has finally surfaced. We’re thrilled that we have been this well received, so thank you to everyone who has taken the time to get in contact!
Aside from a pat on the back, we’ve also had a ton of emails through asking questions on health, fitness, nutrition and more. We aim to answer all questions sent through to us, with the best ones being featured within the magazine in our exciting new question and answer features. Plus, as an incentive the best questions will win some fantastic prizes! Keep an eye on our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/BrightonActive for news of these. You’ll find all the contact information you need over the course of the magazine in the relevant features. If you can’t wait, then email any questions, comments, suggestions, news or success stories you have to info@brightonactive.com Helping you to take part in local sports and activities is what we do. So it’s appropriate then that we have a special feature for you this issue on the TAKEPART International Festival of Sport, kicking off on June 25th at Preston Park. The two week long event will have plenty for you to get involved in and we’ll even be there ourselves for the launch day, so please do come and say hi! Elsewhere in this issue, YMCAfit are at hand to help anyone looking to become a Personal Trainer, we’ll be taking to the sea with Brighton Watersports and will be looking at getting active in the Brighton dating and social scene thanks to Soul Mate Events. All this plus Infinity Foods, So Sussex, Brighton Kettlebells, Performance Foods, Sarah Hurst Beauty, Heroes Run and much more. The sun is out and there’s never been a better time to get active! Remember though, many of the activities we feature within the magazine run through the winter as well. So get out there and find your new hobby today to take you right up to summer 2012! We’ll still be here and would love to hear about your progress as you go. Healthy Regards, Ash

Health Spark We spoke to local YMCAfit success story Sharon Spark (41) who went from couch potato to PT perfection with the help of YMCAfit Hi Sharon, let’s start right at the beginning. What made you decide to become a Personal Trainer (PT)? If you ask a lot of Personal Trainers that, they will most likely say, “I’ve always been into sport,” or “I played a lot of sport at school,” but for me, before deciding to become a PT I was the ultimate couch potato. My husband tried to get me into sport but I wasn’t having any of it. Then one day I woke up and knew it was time for a change. I joined a gym, worked with my own PT, learnt how to horse ride and began playing badminton. Everything snowballed and I couldn’t get enough of it! It was then I made my decision to become a PT.
BtnActive#3_REPRO.indd 17
Why did you choose YMCAfit to get qualified with? I must have met well over a dozen PT’s over my time at various gyms, but the one who I personally got great results from was trained with YMCAfit. I looked online, read some comments from other people who had also chosen YMCAfit and felt that they had exactly what I was looking for. It was also great that they were local, a short drive away from my house at Esporta Health Club in Brighton. What with being a wife and mother it fitted perfectly into my schedule. Did you choose to do the intensive course option or the part-time modular route? I did the intensive course which was for 15 weeks, one week on and one week off (8 weeks on in total). Were you in a group? Yes. When we started there were 12 people in the group. The first part of the course was Gym Instructor, so some people just stayed for that. Others joined us later on in the course. All in all though there were a core nine of us there from start to finish. We all bonded really well and I still speak to some of them to this day.
30/05/2011 13:55
You mentioned Gym Instructor being the first part of the course? That’s right, this was for the first two weeks (three weeks given the alternating week off in between). We learnt how to take body measurements, to show someone around a gym, to write an extensive workout programme and more. It was a great start to the course covering the basics. After Gym Instructor you then started the Personal Training part of the course. Can you tell us more about this? There are seven fundamental modules to the course: Gym Instructor, Fitness Testing, Advanced Training, Exercise Nutrition, Business Skills, Outdoor Fitness and Sports Conditioning. There was plenty of theory and practise aspects throughout the whole course. Some days we’d work indoors and cover everything we had learnt so far. Other days we’d be outside at Stanmer Park getting a sweat on. It was all great fun and really interesting.. 18
Getting a sweat on? So you actually trained while learning?! Yes, sometimes it’s the best way. An example would be when we all stood in a circle in the park. When our name was called we would run into the centre and perform a single exercise to the group. The whole group then would perform ten repetitions of these. Then it would be someone else’s turn to go into the centre of the circle, but no exercise could be performed twice. We found we really had to rack our brains and often were introduced to new and exciting exercises we hadn’t heard of before. How did people take to this? Everyone took to it really well, but it was also great to get pushed outside of our comfort zone once in a while. After all, it’s then you’ll really be tested and learn something new. An example of this was a female bodybuilder in the group. For her, taking exercise outside to a field without any equipment or machines was quite daunting at first. It didn’t take long though for her to adapt and come out trumps.
ISSUE #3 JUNE 2011
BtnActive#3_REPRO.indd 18
30/05/2011 13:55
Who was teaching you at these times? YMCAfit tutor, Richard Merrick was our main tutor from start through to finish. Other tutors came in throughout the course to help us though. Everyone was very supportive, encouraging and positive. Even now if I need help with something Richard and the team are always available for a chat. Part of the course is Business Skills. This sounds interesting, can you explain? This was a great part of the course. You hear so much about courses that give you all the info you need while in the course, but nothing to get you going after. The Business Skills part of the course focused on everything from how to write a business plan to how you should go about advertising yourself. We looked at the benefits of Facebook and Twitter for free promotion and even looked at creating our own business cards, with a specific look at what kind of logo should be used and what you want to project through it. YMCAfit offer guaranteed interviews at some hugely popular gyms. Did you take them up on this? I didn’t because I was lucky enough to have a job already waiting for me at a local gym. However, having these guaranteed interviews is fantastic and a real weight off people’s shoulders. It’s great for them to know that immediately after their course they can get a job straight away with YMCAfit’s help! Looking back then, what was the best part of the whole YMCAfit experience? The best thing about it was the support given. If I had a problem, query or concern there was always someone that I could speak to who would take genuine care in advising me.
If you would like to find out more about becoming a personal trainer telephone 020 7343 1850, email bookings@ymcafit.org.uk or visit www.ymcafit.org.uk. Sharon Spark now works at Fit For All Gym in Hove and also teaches Personal Training independently
For anyone who wants to become a Gym Instructor or a Personal Trainer I would definitely recommend doing it with YMCAfit.

PERSONALLY SPEAKING In a new regular feature, Martin Petrie of MP Personal Training answers your health and fitness questions. Email martin@brightonactive.com with yours. From next issue the best questions will win some great prizes
Q
: At the start of the year I weighed 70kg. I’ve been weight training at least three times a week but have hardly budged on the scales. I’m even eating up to six meals a day! Any ideas? Tom S Hi Tom, There would be a few things I would look at, the first being how you’re training. For example are you doing a split body program or just picking what you feel like doing on any given day? Planning and keeping a training notebook is key if you really want to grow. The second element would be your food. You say you eat up to six meals per day, but what are they containing? As a pointer you really need to ramp up on protein to 1.5-2 grams per KG of your bodyweight if you want to get muscular gains. You should then notice some serious gains in as little as two months!
Q
: I find working my abs in the gym quite boring and tedious, but I know it’s important that I should. Can you give me some tips to spark things up? Moe H
and now I find I’m paying out money for a membership I barely even use! How can I reignite the fire within so I can get back to enjoying things? Selina G Hi Selina, Have you tried any of the classes that your gym provides? They are normally free with your membership and in most cases you can bring a friend with you for a small charge if they aren’t a member. Training with a friend will help with motivation, but if you are not really into group training or classes then ask your gym for a review of your goals and get an updated training program. Again, this service is normally free with your membership. If you’re in dire need of motivation though then hiring a Personal Trainer is definitely the route to take.
Q
: I work long hours in a very taxing job and often find that the local vending machine is as far as I can get for my lunch. What foods should I be looking to buy for the week to keep the junk food at bay? Michel D
Hi Moe, I used to feel the same way, and then discovered that there is a lot more than just floor training for your mid section. Have you considered using swissballs for your crunch work or even adding good old fashioned medicine balls for your rotational work? Give them a go.
Hi Michel, A really cheap and handy tip for you is to cook more than you need to the evening before your day at work. You can then take the rest to work with you. Don’t forget to add a piece or two of fruit to your bag, as well as a bottle of water.
Q

FREEDOM FIGHTER Freedom Leisure now run six of the City’s leisure facilities including the King Alfred Leisure Centre and Withdean Sports Complex. We caught up with Fitness Manager, Ryan O’Gorman to find out some of the exciting recent developments at their sport and leisure facilities Hi Ryan, we covered the King Alfred’s new £450,000 gym development in issue 01 at the very start of the year. What other sites have enjoyed a revamp? All of them! Freedom Leisure have recently installed state of the art fitness equipment at Stanley Deason Leisure Centre, Prince Regent Swimming Complex, Moulsecoomb Leisure Centre and the Withdean Sports Complex. Hundreds of thousands of pounds has been invested and we’re proud to say that our fitness facilities now have some of the best fitness equipment available in the country! For your resistance equipment you’ve chosen the Life Fitness Signature Series. Can you tell us a bit more about this? With over 20 years of industry insight and customer feedback, Life Fitness have produced a series of resistance equipment with each piece carefully designed to be more effective for the user. Resistance training helps preserve and increase lean muscle tissue. Studies have shown that lean muscle tissue burns significantly more calories throughout the day than fat does, this means using resistance training to create lean muscle makes us more efficient at burning calories, even after we have stopped exercising, thus making it more difficult to put on body fat! So in a nut shell the effectiveness of the equipment helps speed up results on all fronts including muscle tone, fat loss and muscle endurance. It goes without saying there will always be qualified
Fitness staff on hand to help you out and run through this exciting range of equipment and get you looking good and feeling great in no time at all! What is the Inspire Console? It’s everything you could ask for in a modern day piece of equipment, and more! The console is integrated into all of our cardiovascular equipment and has iPod and iPhone compatibility. You can watch videos and play your music using the integrated LCD screens, plus with USB connectivity you can create and store your workouts. We hear that a single gym membership means that you can then attend all of the Freedom Leisure sites? That’s correct. We have a variety of memberships, but the one you are referring to is called the Freedom Connected Membership and allows you to become a member of all the Freedom Leisure sites - giving you unlimited fitness access to 25 sport and leisure facilities! Not bad for just £55.00 a month. What other exciting plans do Freedom Leisure have in store for the rest of the year? Functional Training is something that has become very popular as of late. We’ve recognised this and are pleased to say that all our sites now run a variety of programmes that are designed to give you a different dimension to your training. To learn more about Freedom Leisure and to find all the contact information for Brighton and Hove’s local Freedom Leisure sites visit www. freedom-leisure.co.uk www.brightonactive.com

Is it to achieve an ideal body shape, to reduce risks of health complications, to feel more in control of their body, or all of the above?
This is where individual care and attention can be useful in educating women as to what methods are available, what it entails and whether it will suit their body type, lifestyle and goals.
I have been in the fitness industry for over 10 years and have worked with countless female clients for weight loss, toning and shaping up. In this time I have seen the unnecessary pressure this can place on a woman who may be fighting her internal demons as well as social demands.
Lisa, a mum of three, came for personal training sessions with a view to ‘just get fit and have more energy.’ She did not want to commit to a weight loss goal, because of so many prior diets, some successful, all ended up with her putting the weight back on eventually. We began with movement and fitness training only and gradually as Lisa gained strength, stamina and most importantly confidence, she allowed herself to believe she could have a body she liked the look of too.
Often the clients that successfully achieve this goal are not the ones who are desperate enough to do anything, but rather the ones who are honest enough to admit where they are at and why they really need to change. This definitive moment of realisation and honesty is the first and possibly most important step towards change, and may be why some women appear to have great success on a particular diet or exercise program than others. The core principles of diet and exercise do not change, yet methods of implementing these principles may vary. There are so many diets, exercise classes, fitness bootcamps, supplements and varying opinions as to what is most effective to guarantee results and it seems that degrees of success vary with every method.
Two months later Lisa is half way to her goal (which is a measurements based goal and not weight) and is 2 dress sizes smaller. She doesn’t always find it easy to fit everything into her busy life but has made a choice to achieve her goal and finds the support and motivation of personal training keeps her focussed on the WHY and HOW of getting there. Some important factors can affect female fitness and response to diet and exercise. Surprisingly the physiological factors; body composition (woman generally tend to hold more body fat and in specific areas to men), hormones, monthly cycles and contraception, are more easily worked through than the lifestyle limitations, psychological issues and social pressures which can send diet and exercise goals crashing with one event. www.brightonactive.com

OPEN FEILD Softball is one of the fastest growing team sports in the UK. We spoke to the Brighton Beachcombers Softball Club to learn more about the game and how you can get involved with things today Brighton Beachcombers Softball Club play mixed, slowpitch softball which, if you’re not familiar with the game, is best described as a bat-and-ball game similar to baseball. Two teams, each made up of male and female players take it in turn to bat with the aim being to make it around all the bases on the diamond shaped field to score runs. Softball is a fast paced, non-contact sport, in that there is no ‘tackling,’ though some plays may involve a gentle ‘tag.’ It is also a very sociable game, especially at the co-ed, recreational level at which we usually play. That said, there is competition involved and the Beachcombers regularly compete in weekend tournaments where we play against teams from across the country. We also enter two teams in the newly established Brighton & Hove Softball League. Established in 1999, Brighton Beachcombers Softball Club started life as The Brightonians. Since then we’ve expanded in numbers, but have always welcomed in new players of any age over 15 years (15 year olds must be accompanied by a parent or guardian) and of any experience level.
• Outdoor season runs from April thought to October. In the winter we play a fast-paced, indoor version of the game • We practice every Wednesday at 6:00pm in Preston Park, Brighton, on the A23 London Road side (occasionally we change venues if the park is in use for events such as Pride. Please check website for details) • You need never have played before to come along • The club provides bats, fielding gloves, balls and all other equipment if you don’t have your own • You should wear sports gear suitable for the weather that day. Trainers with good grip on grass are recommended as are caps and sunglasses • Typical practices start with training drills from qualified coaches followed by a full game We have lots more information on our website at www.beachcomberssoftball.com. You can also follow us on Facebook (facebook.com/BrightonBeachcombers) and Twitter (@Softball_BN) Email brightonbeachcombers@gmail.com with any questions you may have and we’ll be happy to advise you
There is a strong social side to the club too. After practices and games we inevitably head to a nearby pub for drinks, food and talk of that day’s softball and much more. So, if you’d like to get involved in a fun, social, unusual game which is expanding in popularity all the time, here’s what you need to know: 24 ISSUE #3 JUNE 2011

TAKEPART BRIGHTON & HOVE FESTIVAL OF SPORT TAKEPART, the annual Brighton and Hove Festival of Sport, has always highlighted and showcased the sporting opportunities of the city. Now, the 2011 event is promising to be the most exciting yet TAKEPART began life as the School Sports Festival in 2006. Driven by the School Sports Partnership, the aim was to provide young people with the chance to sample a wide range of different sports and activities through local clubs. Thanks to the festival exciting opportunities became freely available, and over the course of the two week period 20 different taster sessions attracted 6000 eager participants.
athletics to mountain boarding, and scuba diving to circus skills. A dedicated disability area was also introduced - the Amazing Zone - offering sessions in bocchia, table tennis, karate and more with trained support workers on hand and adjacent accessible changing rooms and toilets. Throughout the actual two week festival period over 100 taster sessions were offered throughout the city
2007 was an equally successful event and in 2008, after a partnership was formed between the City Council, NHS Brighton and Hove and the School Sport Partnership, TAKEPART was born. The launch day in June that year was officially opened by former Olympic, World, European and Commonwealth Champion, Sally Gunnell at Preston Park. The event attracted 8000 visitors this time around, 2500 of which helped to break the British record for the largest number of people skipping at one time! TAKEPART 2010 was the largest and most successful to date. The launch day saw over 10,000 people enjoying getting involved with free taster sessions in over 60 different sports and activities ranging from 28

ADVENTURE LAND
Using the country side as their office, SO SUSSEX are about to change the way businesses look at team building SO SUSSEX is a family run venture based out of Barcombe Village (near Lewes), right on the edge of the South Downs National Park. Founders Nigel and Maria Greenwood are excited to soon launch their new Team Challenge events, with up to 20 teams competing against each other in activities such as mountain biking, rowing, orienteering and hiking. The aim of the challenge is not just to help team building, but to provide a rare look at the glorious surroundings in Sussex that many of us rarely get a chance to see. To make sure preparations are ready for the Team Challenge launch in September this year, Brighton Active and other selected regional businesses were invited along to experience things first hand in a trial run put together at the end of May. “It was a great opportunity to take part in some really exciting activities in an idyllic location just out of the city,” BA Editor Ash Phelps says. “The surroundings were fantastic and the day was planned out expertly.” Another corporate participant added, ‘it was the best team building event she had ever experienced.’ The challenge began at Vuggles Farm on the edge of Barcombe Village at 9:00am where everybody was introduced to one another over a hearty breakfast, finely put together using delicious local produce. Individuals were then split into teams and provided with an adventure pack containing all the information required to complete the days tasks.
Once roles were assigned the challenge begun in the form of a relay race which saw all members of the team switch to different activities throughout the course of the day. Points were awarded to each team depending on the time they finished each task. In terms of the more ‘creative’ tasks (such as constructing a working slingshot) points were awarded on how effective their creations were. There were more points available throughout the day in the form of a Scavenger Hunt highlighting more of the areas charming qualities. One team had to undertake a fire making exercise facilitated by a forest teacher who also taught them about edible plants. “Whether it was our minds or our bodies, something was always working the whole day,” Ash concludes. Lunch, snacks and drinks (including homemade elderflower cordial) were also provided throughout the day and there was a prize giving ceremony at the challenges climax along with some positive analysis on how we all worked as a team. You can learn more about SO SUSSEX and their up and coming events at www.sosussex.co.uk. Alternatively call 07739 050816 or email info@sosussex.co.uk with any enquiries you may have

“The pack clearly marked out what we had to do. Some activities demanded physicality such as the mountain biking and rowing, others preferred a more creative flare and navigation qualities. It was our job as a team to decide who would be best in each situation and assign designated roles.” www.brightonactive.com

SUMMER SHAPE-UP Fitness Shop are ready to help you shape up this summer! Email your questions to fitness@brightonactive. com and not only do we promise to answer them all, but the best ones will win some fantastic prizes For all those people who may have ‘weighty’ issues, we at Fitness Shop have only one suggestion to make: do not EVER follow any fad diet for achieving your weight loss goals! Firstly, you will probably gain back whatever weight you may have lost previously, and secondly, these fad diets can actually ruin your health! Most experts say that the best way to lose weight quickly and safely is simple: start taking a healthy, balanced diet, along with regular exercise. Plus, many also agree that the correct use of nutritional supplements can also aid you in shedding the pounds. A BALANCED DIET: People often ask what exactly a ‘balanced diet’ is and how will it help them lose weight quickly? A balanced diet is that which supplies the body with all the required essential nutrients, carbohydrates, fats, proteins, fibres, vitamins and minerals. The best, and quickest way to find out which foods are rich in all of these is to check the internet. Or if you are working with a personal trainer, they should be able to advise you. Try putting a list together of all that you find and then create 38
a weekly menu with quick and easy recipes you can follow. Preferably cook all meals at home with very little use of oil, sugar and other fatty substances. This will help ward off any excess calories. SMALL, REGULAR MEALS: Most of us have got into the habit of eating two or three large meals a day, sometimes even choosing to skip breakfast. These are unhealthy eating habits that must be changed immediately if you are serious about your weight loss goals. To start with, it is essential that you begin eating breakfast for those who tend to skip it. Research shows that people who eat a nutritious, healthy breakfast tend to eat less throughout the day. Secondly, begin to eat five smaller meals in a day. This way there won’t be as much of a gap in between meals, helping you keep any unnecessary food cravings at bay. SUPPLEMENTS FOR WEIGHT LOSS: Certain supplements are solely designed to aid in weight loss. Some are even combined with a high protein content so that the weight lost is fat and not muscle. Products such as Reflex Diet Protein or PhD Diet Whey come highly recommended and are both available from Fitness Shop. EXERCISE: Try and get into a routine of performing forty minutes of cardiovascular exercise each day such as swimming, cycling, running or aerobics. Joining a gym or working with a Personal Trainer is also a great place to start as they will be able to find out what works best for you and write you out a plan to follow. However you choose to get in shape this summer, Fitness Shop have all the fitness equipment and sports supplements you’ll need. Visit them at 123 Queens Road, Brighton or call 01273 567 884

TO INFINITY AND BEYOND Founded in 1971, Infinity Foods began life as a small shop on Church Street. Fast forward to today and it is one of the most loved businesses in Brighton. We take a look at its history... Infinity Foods was founded by three friends selling basic vegetarian whole foods and freshly baked products. Its fresh approach to food at the time saw the business grow rapidly over the next couple of years and in 1973 the shop relocated to its current site on North Road. Expansion was quickly on the cards and a bakery was opened shortly after the move. Space in the back of the building was used to house and open the Brighton Natural Health Centre, now a registered charity, and in 1979 the company was converted into a workers cooperative. Business continued to flourish and in 1984, the shop and bakery merged. The popularity of Infinity Foods was higher than ever, and with the demand for wholesale orders becoming too great for the retail site to cater for, a separate wholesale branch of the business was set up in Portslade in 1985. In recent years people’s attitudes towards their health, the environment and food production
have changed enormously, with a far greater awareness of the implications of our actions. Infinity Foods recognised this and continued to source locally grown and produced, organic, non-GM, fair-trade vegetarian foods that have been matched in equal part by the increasing demand for these same foods from their customers. As a result of this, the shop has continued to flourish over the years and in 1998 the Infinity Foods Café opened just around the corner from the North Road shop, in Gardner Street. The café has been serving up delicious, wholesome and organic vegetarian cuisine to enthusiastic and hungry Brighton appetites ever since. Now with a workforce of near to 100, it’s clear that with a continuing passion and dedication to sourcing the very best products, Infinity Foods’ support and loyalty of a regular customer base will keep going from strength to strength.
This year marks 30 years since Infinity Foods set up the Brighton Natural Health Centre, and it’s with them that the entertainment will begin! Starting at midday, Saturday 2nd July there will be demonstrations from some local classes and groups including Yoga, Chi Gong and Hula-hooping. These will go on through to around 2pm when a few guest speakers will then lead us onto a game show hosted by Lindsay Morris (of Vavavoom fame). The afternoon will continue on with live music and dancing from local bands, Zora & the Tatsmiths, The Silver Sounds Samba and The Swing Ninjas. Food will be supplied by the Infinity Foods Café and organic drink from local brewers.
The future looks bright for Infinity Foods and on Saturday 2nd July (International Co-operatives Day) Jubilee Street and Jubilee Square will be the venue for their ethical market, encouraging members of the public to meet the people who supply the shop. BRIGHTON KETTLEBELLS PHOTO - Thomas Angus
Kettlebell training has been taking the world by storm, and now thanks to Brighton Kettlebells you too can get involved with it all and see for yourself what all the fuss is about. Kettlebell training might be on the tip of everyone’s tongue at the moment but Brighton Kettlebells has in fact been running kettlebell classes in Hove for the last three years! With more classes than ever, including new classes at Varndean School, the Brighton Kettlebell team are looking forward to introducing newcomers to this exciting training method. So, what are kettlebells? A Kettlebell is a cast iron weight that looks like a cannon ball with a handle. It is the ultimate training tool, with many celebrities and sportsmen touting their effectiveness for getting them in shape and increasing fitness including Matthew McConaughey, Jennifer Lopez and Penelope Cruz.
Kettlebells come in various sizes and weights to suit all abilities, with weights ranging from 4kg to 24kg. Newcomers to kettlebell training need not worry as they will be shown how to use them by qualified coaches with years of experience.
WEEKLY CLASS TIMETABLE: Varndean School, Balfour Road, Brighton Monday: 7.30pm-8.30pm (Beginners) Thursday: 7.30pm-8.30pm Saturday: 9.30am-10.30am

It’s not just men either who are queuing up to get a piece of the Kettlebell action, women are too! The benefits of Kettlebell training include: • High intensity, shorter duration workouts making this the ultimate fat burn tool • An increase in coordination and proprioceptive abilities • Increased shoulder strength, flexibility and shoulder and hip stability thanks to the off-set centre of gravity • Effective conditioning of the cardiovascular system by stressing all the body’s energy systems • Increased strength, power, balance, flexibility and co-ordination

THE POWER OF
MASSAGE
With 22 years experience in beauty therapy, regular contributor Sarah Hurst of Sarah Hurst Beauty gets under the skin of some of the most effective massage techniques you can enjoy today For thousands of years massage has been recognised for its therapeutic and relaxing value. Massage techniques vary widely and the power of massage for reducing painful conditions is undisputed, yet is little understood. At Sarah Hurst Beauty Studio we combine a number of techniques such as Myofascial Release Techniques (MFR), Trigger Point Therapy and Deep Tissue Massage together with effective stretching techniques to reduce the body of pain and discomfort. MYOFASCIAL RELEASE Myofascial Release Techniques aim to restore mobility in the fascia (the strong connective tissue that runs throughout our bodies and which holds us together) and helps soften connective tissue that has become rigid. Fascia has been described by some as a three dimensional body stocking that envelopes each and every structure of the body; the tiniest nerve even has its own fascial sheath, or envelope, as does the largest bone. About half of the muscular attachments of the body are to fascia, so muscle tone or state of contraction have a lot to do with how tight or loose the fascial sheaths are. All these modalities confirm that a healthy fascial system is integral to an increase in health and wellbeing. TRIGGER POINT THERAPY A growing body of evidence suggests that many pain conditions are actually caused by trigger points. A trigger point is a knot within a tight muscle that hurts when pressed and can even result in pain being
caused elsewhere in the body. Trigger points vary in size, from that of a pea to the size of a golf ball. They are responsible for a vast number of pain related symptoms including upper and lower back pain, Carpal tunnel syndrome, neck pain, migraine and many more irritations that can make life extremely problematic. Trigger Point therapy is always followed by stretching of the muscle. DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE Deep Tissue work is designed to help reduce pain in muscles and fascia. The focus is on getting right down to the deeper muscles that lie below the surface muscles to help sooth any pains and aches. This is achieved by an extremely effective combination of hot and cold stones which are used as an alternative to bathing and help reduce inflammation. By combining all these techniques, using a ‘listening touch’ and communication to identify problem areas, massage becomes hugely beneficial for athletes and people with active lifestyles, as well as of course for those suffering for injuries and any general pain or discomfort. Massage is available at Sarah Hurst Beauty Studio by Sarah or James. YOGA PULSE Having practised various styles of yoga for over 15 years including Hot Yoga, Hatha Yoga and Vinyasa Flow, Sharon Smillie launched Pulse Yoga to Brighton in June last year. She is the first teacher to introduce this new style of yoga to the UK and one of only two qualified to teach this dynamic style of yoga BA: Hi Sharon, what is pulse yoga? SS: Pulse Yoga is a totally new exercise paragon applying micro movements and free weights to basic yoga postures. These repetitive pulse movements serve to strengthen, sculpt and tone the whole body including key areas such as your abdominals, lower back and gluteus. BA: Where did pulse yoga originate from? SS: This new technique originated a few years ago in Colorado, USA after yoga instructor Argie Tang was told by her doctor that she had developed osteopenia (lower-than-normal bone mineral density). Tang, who was in her fifties at the time, was shocked to hear that despite practising yoga for so long, she still needed to build bone density with weight training. Reluctant to join a gym or reduce the little time she already had for yoga, Tang decided to create a new type of yoga that suited her needs.
SS: After six weekly, one hour sessions of Pulse Yoga students will notice greater strength and stamina, increased flexibility, balance and coordination along with improved muscle tone. MAIN BENEFITS OF PULSE YOGA • To strengthen and tone key problem areas such as the abs, lower back, upper arms and glute muscles • Helps build bone density, helping to reduce the risk of breaking bones which helps stabilize the progression of osteoporosis • Principle muscle utilisation for postures using free weights and micro movements • Decreases body fat (especially abdominal fat) • Expends more calories • Develops greater strength and flexibility Pulse Yoga is suitable for all ages and abilities. Studio classes, private 1-2-1 tuition, corporate classes, school classes and small groups are all catered for. Sharon is an RYT200 (Registered Yoga Teacher 200 hours). To learn more call 07958 573555, email sharon@pulseyogabrighton.co.uk or visit www.pulseyogabrighton.co.uk
BA: How does pulse yoga differ from other styles of yoga? SS: With Pulse Yoga there is no chanting or reference “Pulse Yoga is the to Sanskrit. This is great for missing link between students who want to receive all yoga and the gym. the benefits of yoga, but without In a few classes the the spiritual side of things. All difference in my classes are performed to music muscle tone was and there is a real element of remarkable! A really fun to them. BA: What results will you see after six weeks? 48
