EDITOR’S NOTE Two months in and you’d think we’ve been around for years. It’s been a cracking start since launching Brighton Active Magazine back in January and things are still going from strength to strength. The biggest news being that we are the official regional magazine media partner for the Brighton Half Marathon 2012. What can we say? We like to plan ahead.
PHOTO - Shireen Rusbridge
As before, this issue is jam-packed full of activities that you can take up today, and with the warm weather coming in you really are spoilt for choice whether you want to get out on the water, out on the golf course, or just out to the park.
If four walls are more your thing, then we’ve also got that covered too with crossfit, taekwon-do, kettlebells and more. Many of the sports and activities in this issue will happily provide you with a free taster session allowing you to test things out and see what’s what before committing. So make the most of it and go explore! Brighton Active really is all about you, which is why we’re giving you a preview to this year’s Paddle Round the Pier extravaganza, looking into the benefits behind some of the world’s healthiest teas and helping you get the most from sporting supplements. Plus all the latest news, events and gear from around Brighton and Hove. Over the last couple of months we’ve been darting here, there and everywhere to bring you the stories that count and are always keen to experience things first hand instead of taking a back seat. The photo at the top of this page of local boy, and UFC fighter John “The Hitman” Hathaway is a prime example - It wasn’t enough for us just to have a chat with the guy, we wanted to get into his world. So with the help of ZT Fitness Eastbourne, that’s exactly what we did with an MMA training session with the local lad himself. After all, it’s not everyday you get to wrestle with a UFC fighter, even if we are still aching from it. If you haven’t already, check out our gallery with John on our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/BrightonActive. Two months may be a great amount of time to grow the reputation of a new magazine, but it is also more than enough time for you to make an active change in your lifestyle. Start today and you’ll be amazed at what you’ll be able to do and the results you’ll achieve come the summer. Healthy Regards, Ash

NEWS
ACTIVE NEWS FOR ACTIVE PEOPLE Brighton Marathon This year it is expected that over 100,000 people will be out supporting the runners in this year’s Brighton Marathon. In just 30 days over 15,000 entries were sold for the 2011 race and if things are anything like last year then you can expect a gloriously sunny day to keep spirits high and waterboys busy. The 26 mile course starts with a loop around Preston Park before heading down and along the coastal road. Generally it is a fast course and the entire route will be free from traffic. The good news for new runners is that the last 15 miles are generally the easiest, with the course either being flat or downhill. You’ll be crossing the finishing line on Madeira Drive, just east of the Brighton Pier. Check out the Brighton Marathon website for a PDF map of the route and some great photos and videos. WHEN?: Sunday 10th April 2011, please arrive by 8:00am www.brightonmarathon.com

ADDITION DECRYPTION Fit For All Gym is one of the friendliest, most effective gyms in Brighton and Hove. We’re not just saying that to reaffirm their slogan either, we’re saying that because we know from personal experience it’s true, and know plenty of others who would agree with us
14
Admittedly though it’s the Fit For All gym floor which is as far as our knowledge extends to, and is something we were keen to address. So when we were invited along to check out their fitPLUS facility we accepted without hesitation. We were of course curious to find out exactly what fitPLUS was and were also keen to get our hands dirty (something we’re never afraid to do) and give a fitPLUS session a go ourselves.
FitPLUS takes advantage of group sessions with around five members at a time keeping them low, so expect to bond closely with your workout partners as you help motivate each other through the workout.
FitPLUS is a mixture of a boot camp and a personal training session. It takes place indoors in its very own well equipped gym which is separate to Fit For All’s main gym.
Trainer wise, surprisingly they’re out the window, to an extent anyway. Instead you’re provided with your very own fitPLUS Coach. The difference between the two became
The great thing about fitPLUS is that every class you attend is different from the last, helping you to stay out of a rut and keeping your interest high.

evident in our very first trial session: as the groups are kept small your Coach is able to constantly monitor everyone in the room and help them perfect their technique, posture and keep everyone motivated. They are there for you to ask questions, both in and out of the studio, and can also tailor-make each session around an individual without affecting the group dynamics. For example, if someone has a bad back that restricts them from performing particular exercises, their Coach will target their session to help minimalise the problem whilst still having them join in within the group. Each class has a number of pre-planned exercises which you move from one to the next over a set amount of time and with a set amount of rest periods. However think less of press ups and sit ups of yesteryear and more of TRX rows, kettlebell swings, weighted squats and cardio machine sprints - basically, the techniques that can really make a difference in only a few short weeks.
Put simply then, fitPLUS works! We came through our first session knowing our bodies had been tested, but were invigorated to continue this exciting, personal method of training. We quickly snapped up a second class a few days later to see how the Coaching staff varied in their methods of training.
Kevin, who was the coach in our second session, is a strength and conditioning master and so his training methods were much more weight and bodyweight orientated. His knowledge behind his forte is unparalleled and he helped us perfect our techniques and highlighted a few common errors that had silently snuck into our exercise habits without us knowing.
“Having your very own coach is a real distinguishing feature over anything you will find in the gym. The personal progression you will get is as good, if not better, as working solo with a personal trainer” trainer ”
Trevor, who was the coach in our first fitPLUS session, is the fitPLUS Fitness Manager and has a ton of experience behind him. We particularly noticed his ability to communicate well with us and the other fitPLUS members, delivering an enthusiastic session that was fun and varied.
Sessions comprise of a warm up at the start of the class (Trevor set us off on a piece of cardio equipment at a moderate pace whilst Kevin showed us a great trick using a medicine ball to help loosen tight muscles) and a warm down at the end (both opted for some stretching exercises).
It is of course the middle of the class that is really what it’s all about though, and both Coaches opted for different ways to set this out. Trevor went with a challenging work / rest method: working on a single exercise station for two minutes, and then resting for two minutes. Then working for one minute and

resting for one minute. We then worked for 30 seconds and rested for 30 seconds, before finally working for another 30 seconds and having a two minute rest before moving on to the next exercise (there were six in total).
minute work time on each exercise station before moving straight on to the next. All exercises (again, there were six) were repeated twice after a short break in the middle for us to get our breath back.
If someone was struggling both Trevor and Kevin would encourage them on, or if someone couldn’t perform the exercise with the correct form required they “The great thing about would show them an fitPLUS is that every class alternative exercise to you attend is different perform instead.

It was great to see this personal approach being implemented effortlessly during each session. Having your very own coach is a real distinguishing feature over anything you will find in the gym. The personal progression you will get is as good, if not better, as working solo with a personal trainer. We highly recommend you try a FREE trial class to see exactly what fitPLUS is all about and what it can do for you. Call 01273 415364 or visit www.fitforall.co.uk/fit-plus/ to learn more.

TRAINING
LIFE FORCE
Martin Petrie of MP Personal Training (featured in Brighton Active issue 01) is all geared up to help make sure your 2011 is your healthiest yet! Here he talks about this year’s Race for Life - the UK’s biggest women-only charity fundraising event supporting Cancer Research UK
First off in my column for this issue, I have something just for the ladies and something which is very close to my heart: this year’s Race for Life annual event in aid of Cancer Research. This year there are two runs on the 2nd and 3rd of July, both at Stanmer Park along Lewis Road, Brighton. Each run is 5km (3.125 miles) and depending which one you enter, can be on or off road and is open to runners, joggers and walkers of all ages. Personally I can’t think of a better incentive to get fitter and healthier, and all the while raising funds and awareness for such a great cause. Now is the perfect time to start training for Race For Life and with the days getting longer, brighter and warmer, it really is a great time to get outdoors and take up running. If you’re interested in taking part in this year’s Race For Life run, I will be holding weekly group training sessions meeting at Hove Lagoon every Monday, starting on the 4th April at 7pm. The cost for training is £5 per head for the hour and 50% of all money taken will be donated to Cancer Research UK.
Gents, this is also a great time for you to shine like the sun (minus the vitamin D though) and support loved ones, friends and colleagues as they prepare and challenge themselves for a greater cause. Spring is certainly in the air and the sun is starting to make an appearance, bringing with it a wave of motivation and an abundance of vitamin D (which helps us look at things in a more positive way). It’s the first sign of what’s to come later in the year. Yes folks, I’m talking about summer! Whether you are spending it in the UK or heading abroad, can you right this minute say that you are fit enough or healthy enough to make the most of it? Most of us (including myself to a point) are not ready and are still in hibernation mode. So what can we do about it? Well, that’s down to you. There are always events and activities occurring in and around our city, so why not try something new? At this point of the year anything outdoors is a great place to start.
Have a look at this issue’s From The Ground Up feature, starting on page 36 for a few ideas of some activities you can take up today. Regardless of what activity you choose please just remember to make it fun! Exercise should always be enjoyable, so along with all the vitamin D you’ll be getting from the sun from being outside you should always feel on top of the world. Martin Petrie is an NVQ Level 4 Advance Personal Trainer. He has been training for 11 years and his specialities include toning, weight loss and knee and shoulder stability. You can learn more about Martin and MP Personal Training in his Focus feature from Brighton Active issue 01. Don’t just be restricted to the four walls of a gym this Spring! Instead take to the great outdoors with Gavin Walsh Boot Camps with one of his effective, four week training camps
The Green Room
There’s something about Gavin Walsh (also featured in our Focus section on page 53) and his Boot Camps that you may find quite familiar. Gavin was featured on ITV1’s Dancing on Ice back in early March 2011 where he trained Sam Attwater, helping him to perfect his lifts.
Common and Primrose Hill and their inhabitants have long since been enjoying the benefits of GWBC.
With Gavin’s help and his Boot Camp style training regime, Sam was able to pull out all the stops in the live performance that weekend and ended up getting rave reviews from the judges. Without Gavin’s help things could have indeed been very different.
Gavin Walsh Boot Camps are designed to run over a four week period with three sessions per week taking place both at either Preston Park or East Brighton Park every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. Sessions are 45 minutes long and you can either choose to attend the 07:00am-07:45am camp for all the early birds out there, or the 06:00pm-06:45pm camp ideal for those who’ve just finished work.
Perhaps though that’s not the only place you’re familiar with Gavin and his Gavin Walsh Boot Camps (GWBC). If you’ve ever lived, worked or just travelled to London then it’s highly likely you’ve been in the close vicinity of a GWBC at one point or another. You see, that’s where things took off for Gavin and his Boot Camps. Hot spots such as Hyde Park, Clapham 18
Now though it’s Brighton’s turn to enjoy the benefits that Gavin and his Boot Camps offer.
Each camp varies from one to the other but primarily consists on a warm up jog around the park, some body weight exercises including squats, burpees and press-ups, some sprints with exercise stations

mixed into things and some amusing team games (all exercise based of course). You’re encouraged to dig deep and push yourself in each camp, with the simple aim being that after the four weeks of training you’ll be a completely different person. Here you then have the option to keep up your training with GWBC (at a reduced rate) and really go from strength to strength.
your feet back to a pushup position; immediately return your feet to the squat position; leap up as high as possible from the squat position; repeat, moving as fast as possible) followed immediately by 66 star jumps. We then repeated this three times with the group who had all their members finish the flurry first claiming victory.
With such a solid reputation behind him we were keen to take part in one of Gavin’s Boot Camps, so joined up for one of the very first camps in the four week programme. Arriving at East Brighton Park just before 7am (pitch black at this point, being February), it didn’t take long before a few more arrivals welcomed us in, and under Gavin’s request we began warming up with a light jog at the stroke of the hour. It was great to see that the group of 16 had already developed a close bond with each other, despite this only being their second camp. It didn’t take long for the camaraderie to begin as they reminisced on the previous day’s camp launch. After the warm up it was down to business and for the next 35 minutes we did exactly what Gavin had promised: to get fit, lose weight and have fun doing it! Highlights for us were what Gavin called the ‘1066’ exercise programme. Split into two groups of eight, we each had to perform ten burpees (begin in a squat position with hands on the floor in front of you; kick
Now we know this sounds like hard work, and it is, but these are the exercises that really can make a difference. Try performing them on your own and even the strongest of wills would struggle, but work together in a group under the motivation and encouragement of your partners and expert tuition and guidance of GWBC’s instructors and you’ll be amazed at what you can achieve. Trust us, we saw it with our own eyes! By the end of the 45 minutes we knew we had been tested. We left that boot camp, like we’re sure everyone else did, with a huge feeling of achievement having already having put ourselves through a great workout while most of Brighton was still in bed. www.brightonactive.com

27/03/2011 21:45
We understand though that early mornings might not be everyone’s cup of tea but with afternoon classes also taking place there really is no reason why you shouldn’t be embracing the boot camp way of life. One thing that really impressed us with GWBC was the continued support that Gavin provided after the camps. Regular newsletters provide you with a host of nutritional facts, common misconceptions and even some home tasks if you’re feeling up for the challenge. This really helps keep your goals in mind and helps you stay on track, even when you’re away from the park. All in all we were thoroughly impressed by the service, camp itinerary, group dynamics and continued motivation provided by Gavin Walsh Boot Camps. It’s clear to us why Gavin and his camps have been so successful. So if you’re looking to take to the great outdoors and get into shape in double-quick time, then you may very well have found your starting point.

Then throughout my time as a Navy Commando in the SEAL team we were expected to maintain a world class level of fitness but rarely found time to get to a gym. So I came up with an idea that leveraged some old parachute webbing harness material to create a harness that would allow me to use my own bodyweight as resistance and train myself. BA: How did you then go about taking the TRX global? RH: I never really thought about turning it into a business until after I left the SEAL team and went to business school. I would take the TRX I had made into the training centre to workout, and before long coaches and trainers were coming up to me wanting to know more. So being at business school I ultimately decided 22
there was something in this and pursued things, launching the company after I graduated in 2004. BA: Is the TRX still used in the military? RH: It is. Back when I was in the SEAL team there was a small group of us that would train on it together. Now fast forward six years and military business is quite robust here in the USA, having infiltrated the Army and Marine Corp. It’s also catching on really well in the Air Force. They now use the TRX as a fundamental part of their training as opposed to the usual press ups and sit ups that they were using for 300 years prior. BA: How have professional sports clubs taken to the TRX? RH: I’m pleased to say that now it’s more of a case of which sports clubs aren’t using the TRX rather than those that are. There are just so many to list, and clubs have really taken to it well. Here in the USA we have a large following in American Football and Basketball.

We’ve also got a great footprint in Mixed Martial Arts and are now working with some football clubs in the UK including Manchester City and Liverpool. BA: How can the TRX help someone just starting to get into shape, and likewise someone already in good shape? RH: How you exercise with the TRX is up to the individual. You can make things as hard or as easy as you like in an instant. What makes it great to all these people is that the resistance level and difficulty level which you take your performance from is totally user generated, it’s all about you picking what’s right for you. As we say, ‘The TRX helps train the pros, the Joes and everyone in between.’ BA: Sir Richard Branson used the TRX to prepare himself to kitesurf across the English Channel to France last year. Can you tell us more? RH: Word of the TRX found its way to Sir Richard from a Virgin Active trainer who spotted it. When Sir Richard got his hands on it he instantly thought the TRX would be great to help him train for his channel crossing attempt as it was able to duplicate the exact physical demands he was going to find kitesurfing, and then some! Unfortunately Sir Richard didn’t complete the crossing last year after two attempts due to unsuitable weather conditions, but word is he is hoping to give it another shot for his birthday this year. BA: Can the TRX help in rehabilitation or someone returning from an injury? RH: Absolutely! In fact physical therapy and sports medicine is the fastest growing area of our business at the moment. After an injury you mostly need to follow these phases before you’re back on your feet again:
Mobility, stability, strength, endurance and power. The TRX can help you work on each of these in a safe and controlled manor. The great thing about the TRX is that as you go along your journey, the TRX progresses with you, making it a very unique piece of equipment. BA: What advice would you give to someone looking to get in shape? RH: Don’t over think it. A lot of people psyche themselves out of things before they’ve even begun! You just need to think of a simple routine which you’re going to follow, and if you do then you’re going to get results. Then if you see results you’re going to feel better and want to do more of it. Simple.
BA: What does 2011 hold for yourself and the TRX? RH: We’re making some big investments in digital content and I think you’ll see those start to play a bigger and bigger role in TRX users’ lives as 2011 progresses. It should be a really interesting year. Check out our Facebook page to view videos of the TRX in use at www.facebook.com/brightonactive

Crossfit is sweeping the globe and having now reached our shores, David Draper and Holly Skinner have opened their CrossFit Connect facility in Hove and are ready to turn heads - and maybe some tyres
Crossing
Our Brighton Active team tend to stay clear of image conscious, self absorbed gyms. Exercising should not be a fashion show, nor should it be a way to kill a couple of hours. It should be something that pushes your body and mind, helping you achieve the results you want. CrossFit training does just that. There are no mirrors, no machines and no pretence. Instead it’s all about functional and natural movements incorporating the use of pull-up frames, kettlebells, sledges, barbells, ropes, tyres and more. It’s with this style of training that results really can present themselves - and we’re talking from experience here! You’ll become stronger, faster and fitter in no time and there’s a real sense of comradery among the groups that you will train with. Together, times will be set, records will be broken and results will be rewarded. CrossFit Connect is based at the Hove Enterprise Centre (Unit 9) just below Ocean Sports on Kingsway (follow the stairs down). When we spoke to David and Holly back in February the facility (or ‘box’ as they like to call it) was just preparing to open and had a host of equipment lined up ready to be delivered. “We want to make CrossFit Connect a great place to hang out as well as train,” David said. He then showed us a great film about CrossFit (find this on their homepage at www.crossfitconnect.co.uk) and it was clear what he meant. Not only did this film show men and women of all ages training the CrossFit way, it also highlighted the friendships and bonds attained. 24

It may sound cheesy but this is something we’ve always felt has been lacking in most gyms. Gone should be the days where you stand alone in a corner with your iPod in performing static, and quite frankly, boring exercises. Now it’s all about communicating, encouraging and even laughing. Training should be fun yet challenging, rewarding yet tiring and motivational yet painstaking. We returned to CrossFit Connect days before its launch at the start of March when things were really taking shape, and were put through our paces in what was a tough five exercise circuit repeated three times which included press ups, box jumps and medicine ball throws. By the end of it, although gasping for air, we were smiles all around. This is exercise stripped down to its fundamental components and it was easy to see why David and Holly are so passionate about things.

TEE TIME
Golf is a game of skill, precision, patience and power. Constantly evolving golf is now more accessible than ever and thanks to Mytime Golf has never been easier to pick up and play Mytime Golf, part of the Mytime Active Leisure Group, went into partnership with the Brighton and Hove City Council last year by tendering both Hollingbury Park and Waterhall Golf Courses. Hollingbury Park (located along Ditchling Road) and Waterhall Golf Course (along Saddlescombe Road close to Devil’s Dyke) have each taken the necessary steps to becoming the most affordable and welcoming golf courses in Sussex, whether you’re a first time golfer who has never before picked up a golf club, an occasional weekend dabbler or a solid master of the game. They also look to introduce young players to the game with coaching sessions, getting them out on the green and away from the Xbox. So for those of you who are looking to start playing golf and don’t have the foggiest idea of where to start, let us put your mind at rest with some golfing etiquette:
• It’s not unheard of for golf courses to have a very strict dress code which you must conform to to be able to play. It’s always worth doing your research and checking to see if there is one before setting off on your journey. Both Hollingbury Park and Waterhall Golf Courses have a relaxed dress code, so there’s no problem turning up as you are to have a look around. • Many golf courses allow you to hire equipment including clubs and golfing shoes. Again, it is always worth checking to see what they offer before setting off to save a wasted journey. You can hire golf clubs, trolleys and buggies from Hollingbury Park and clubs and trolleys at Waterhall Golf Course. • Novice golfers often grip the golf club too hard when they first play. It’s worth remembering that the more relaxed you are the further you can swing, and the more power you’ll be able to generate.
EFFORTLESS POWER by Jay Taylor (P.G.A. Assistant Professional at Hollingbury Park and Waterhall G.C) “Too many people walk on to the first tee on Saturday morning, pull out their driver and try to smash the ball as hard as they can, to find relief after five days sat in the office. Instead, think of Ernie Els, and swing easy like the “Big Easy.” So many times I see amateurs rush the downswing. Concentrate instead on making a big shoulder turn, then slowly unwind and let it flow. Let the club do the work. The club will fall down on its natural path, then just follow-through towards the target. So, next time you rush on to the tee, think ‘swing easy’, and be like the Big Easy!” 26

KNOW YOUR DISTANCES For the more advanced golfer out there, shots played within 100 yards are where the Pro really can shine. A Pro will expect to hit the ball within ten feet of the flag every time from a decent lie. They all have two or three favourite yardages that they lay up too (if they cannot reach a par 5 in two shots or if they are in trouble on a par 4 and have to pitch out). For example, I know that hitting a three quarter swing with my SW will send the ball 75 yards and stop it quickly. This allows me to make a confident swing and take the guess work out. Take ten balls on the range and take an average of where the majority of balls land. Do this with all your wedges and make a note of your yardages. Next time you play if you get into trouble on that tricky par 4, instead of trying to hit the miracle shot to get the green, lay up to this yardage and give yourself a better chance to save a par and keep the high numbers off your scorecard. regularly. Have a word with any one of our featured personal trainers in this issue’s Focus section to find out more about what exercises you can do to prevent any nagging injuries.
• Golf is a game as much for the mind as it is the body. Before you take each shot prepare yourself metally and visualise yourself hitting the ball cleanly. Take a few deep breaths and above all take your time! • Like any sport there is putting the time in, and then there is putting too much time in! By all means it’s important to practise when you first start playing golf, but be sure not to over practise as you’ll just end up frustrated, demotivated and more than likely end up with your club snapped in two over your knee. It’s quality not quantity, so make sure you know when to take a break to reassess things.
• Some golf courses require you to join as a member before allowing you to play on them. The shortest membership is often pricey at just one month! Both Hollingbury Park and Waterhall Golf Course offer a turn-up-and-play system but also offer the convenience of special offers for multiple plays and coaching sessions, as well as yearly memberships that can be paid for in advance or monthly. You can also get the opportunity to enter regular club competitions to test your skills against other players as yours grow!
• The most common problems golfers experience with their bodies are with their lower back, so it’s important that you keep this strong and flexible if you plan to play www.brightonactive.com

We recommend for the first couple of games you don’t take things too seriously at all. Just enjoy being outdoors and get used to the feel of the club. Golf can be a great day out with friends of the perfect way to relax if playing solo. Once you’re ready to really further your golfing progression you may want to look into ‘chipping’ as a great way to help improve your scores and turn three shots into two shots
“Too many people walk on to the first tee on Saturday morning, pull out their driver and try to smash the ball as hard as they can ...”
Chipping does not require great strength or speed, it requires a basic technique and a little practise to develop a feel for distance around the greens. Using these three little tips will guarantee to improve your chipping and your scores. 1. Favour the weight on to your left leg 60/40 (for right handed golfers). 2. Position the hands forward. The shaft of the golf club will lean more towards the target. 3. Keep the left wrist firm throughout the swing and simply rock the shoulders. Do not flick or break the left wrist.
28
Practise the above points with three different clubs: The SW, which carries the ball 75% and rolls 25%. The 9 iron is roughly 50/50 of carry and roll, and the 7 iron has very little carry at 25% and rolls 75%. Using these percentages will help you choose which club to take depending on how far you need the ball to carry and then roll. Incorporate this into your game to help improve your scores!
So now that you know the basics all that is left for you to do it to make the most of this year’s Spring and Summer time and head out and give golf a go. Both Hollingbury Park and Waterhall Golf Courses have enjoyed some substantial developments in the last year on their club houses and function facilities. They also boast new Pro Shops and serve food and drink at their Spike Bar’s. State of the art conferences, weddings, party celebrations and meeting facilities can also be catered. COMBAT READY,
MIND STEADY
Martial arts has one of the biggest followings in sport today, and Brighton and Hove stands proud as a local hub where you can try your hand at a host of different disciplines to see which one appeals to you most Deciding which discipline is right for you, and which could potentially offer you years of reward and knowledge, is a task that should not be taken lightly. So what better place to start is there than with the most widely practiced martial art in the world today Taekwon-do. Taekwon-do is a Korean self defense discipline that uses dynamic and explosive movements to devastating effect. It is a great way to stay in shape and can also be a gateway to national and international competitions if you decide to take things to a higher level. Jon Swaine, a IV Dan Black Belt and owner of Sussex Taekwon-do, based at the King Alfred Leisure Centre in Hove, was the perfect place for us to start to get a broader understanding of the sport. “To the untrained eye Karate and Taekwon-do look very similar,” John tells us. “In fact the founder of Taekwondo, General Choi Hong Hi, did study Karate to begin with. General Choi though wanted to give the people of Korea their own style of martial art and so Taekwon-do was founded in 1955.” A relatively modern martial art then, Taekwon-do has helped its students gain a greater understanding of how the body works and how it can perform to its maximum capability.
“We warm up with joint rotations and some light stretches, just to raise the body temperature to help students get warmed up.” “Sparring is a huge part of Taekwon-do. Various types include pre-arranged sparring: where rehearsed strikes are used to help perfect attack and defense techniques, free sparring: incorporating kicks and punches, targeting vital areas from head to foot in a controlled manner, and competition sparring: which follows the rules of the ITF - International Taekwon-do Federation (Learn more about the ITF at www.itfadministration.com).” “As well as normal training during the week we also offer the chance to attend seminars to really enhance knowledge of the sport. These are given by some of the most respected Taekwon-do Masters in the world, including the legendary Grandmaster Rhee Ki Ha, one of the greatest martial artists to ever live!” Sussex Taekwon-do welcomes all ages and is suitable for men and women. Classes take place every Tuesday 19:00-20:30pm, and Friday 19:00-20:30pm. To learn more call Jon on 07762 085720. Sussex Taekwon-do was formed in 1986 and is about to celebrate its 25th anniversary at the King Alfred. Jon Swaine is an International Instructor with the International Taekwon-do Federation. He’s been training for 18 years, is fully insured, has a current CRB check and is registered with the British Taekwon-do Council www.brightonactive.com

RUNNING SPECIAL
STARTING BLOCK
With a host of runs taking place throughout 2011, Rob Callow of Health and Vitality Individual Training (HAVIT) talks us through what you need to know before hitting the streets Running is one of the most popular activities for you to take part in the whole of Brighton and Hove and has some seriously positive health benefits. These start from the obvious weight loss advantages and go right through to the release of endorphins, the ‘happy hormone,’ that are responsible for most people’s enjoyment of running and continued sense of well being. Running three times a week not only will you lose inches across your waist and hips, burning perhaps over 700 calories and hour, but you can also help prevent specific conditions such as high blood pressure and Type 2 diabetes. Running can also help you escape domestic and work stresses, and if you join a running group can be a great way to make new friends. Here then are a few points I would consider before getting started: • If you have not exercised for some time I would recommend a pre-cautionary check with your local GP to get things underway.
• Once you get the all clear, begin by following a jog / walk programme. For example, one minute of jogging followed by one minute of walking, then repeat. • As you progress make sure you listen to your body. You should expect to get tired and experience some muscle pain after lengthy runs when you first start, but make sure you know when to rest up and recover so as not to overtrain yourself. • Make sure you warm up before running. It is important to get the muscles and tendons prepared for things by stretching properly. • Try and have a goal in mind. There are many fun runs (5k’s and 10k’s) in Sussex which can act as a great incentive for you to train when your motivation is wavering. • Check your trainers. Initially an old pair will do when you first start running, but as you progress I would suggest visiting a specialised running shop so they can assess your running style and recommend the appropriate footwear. When starting up running I think it’s important to know how to approach jogging effectively. A lot of runners
find it really helpful to come along to one of my beginner runs where you can run with other people of the same level. They also get a lot of great advice and tips for the future and we enjoy having the odd social night after to reward ourselves for all our hard work. I myself started running cross country back at school and now can say that I have completed the Brighton Half Marathon for the last three years. I also ran the Brighton Full Marathon last year completing this in three hours and forty-two minutes. It’s a real passion of mine and one that I love to share with others. Rob Callow is an experienced running and weight loss personal trainer in the Brighton & Hove area. Every Wednesday he manages two running groups, one for Beginners (about 2k) and another for a mixed group for people of an Intermediate and Advanced level (5k for Intermediate and 10k for advanced). He is also an OLF (Optimal life Fitness) qualified Boxing Coach and Premier qualified Kettlebell Trainer. RUNNING SPECIAL
FOOTLOOSE It may surprise you but barefoot running is a more natural and safer way to run long distances as opposed to wearing conventional running shoes. Local personal trainer, Neilon Pitamber tells us more It is thought that many ailments that afflict runners, such as over-pronation, tendonitis of the Achilles tendon, plantar fasciitis, knee issues, shin splints and collapsed arches, can all be linked to wearing modern running shoes. Madness I hear you say! Well did you know that there isn’t a single scientific study that actually shows running shoes can prevent injury? Still, being told something is one thing, but actually seeing for yourself what works is another. That’s why I’ve decided to run barefoot at this year’s Brighton Marathon on April 10th. Well, as close to barefoot as you can get. In fact I’ll be wearing a pair of minimalist Vibram Fivefingers®, designed to help people walk or run the way nature intended... plus you never know what you might step on if I didn’t have something protecting my soles. The heavy load of training I’ve undertaken in preparation for the run has been tough going. Even after a couple of months of running in the Vibram Fivefingers® my calf muscles were still hurting every day. I also had to deal with shin splints, throbbing ankles and of course, the stress that came with it all. I remember thinking to myself on more than one occasion that this might not have been such a good idea after all. The one consolation I did take out of everything though was that my quads never got sore and after a while things did finally become easier. In fact, whenever I did feel pain it made me realise that my
posture had got lazy, and as soon as I straightened up the pain was gone! A time even came when the direct feel of barefoot running became very satisfying. I also noticed that my right foot, which previously used to turn out as I ran, had began to straighten out. All of a sudden, the benefits were kicking in it seemed. Although barefoot running is what our bodies were designed for it seems that after a lifetime of wearing shoes means that you can’t expect instant results. That in a way though is the challenge, and if you are interested in trying out barefoot running I would make sure you start very gently with very short runs and build up slowly from there. When running you should aim to be landing somewhere between the forefoot and mid-foot - not on the heel as you would have been used to. The feet land under the body rather than in front, where they actually act as a brake and send a huge impact up your leg. The trick is to lean forward at the hips slightly, keeping the body straight, and to pull the legs back and up rather than lifting your knees in front of you. The strides you’ll take should be much shorter and quicker. You should be pitter-pattering at around 180 BPM. Neilon Pitamber is a personal trainer based in Brighton and Hove. You can follow his Brighton Marathon progress on the Brighton Active Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ BrightonActive. www.brightonactive.com

In fact it was at The Fitness Shop where my personal journey into following an active lifestyle began: 16 years old and just starting college, I decided to start weight training and also joined a local climbing centre. With little knowledge of where to start and what I would need, it was The Fitness Shop who set me off in the right direction. They helped me get some proper training apparel required instead of the rags I was wearing at the time, some weight training gloves with have long since worn out (in fact I think I’m on my eighth pair now!) and plenty of information and education into the world of sporting supplements.

BOXING With boxing classes booming in gyms, MMA schools and boot camps all around Brighton, once you begin to learn some solid technique you’ll want more and more. In fact, boxers are widely known to be some of the fittest athletes in the world and as your knowledge grows in the sport, so to will the tools you’ll need. These can include hand wraps, boxing shoes, gum shields and boxing gloves.
YOGA Arguably in the peak of its popularity, yoga improves flexibility, balance and is great to help improve muscle tone, all the while de-stressing the mind. Your own equipment is recommended as many studios charge for hire. A simple yoga mat is all you’ll need to start off with and as you begin to improve you can begin to work with more advanced yoga equipment including blocks and straps.
The Fitness Shop also recommends considering what the activity you take up demands from you. Sports supplements can help you on your way whether you’re looking to put on muscle, strip away fat or fuel yourself for running. Big names include SIS, High5 and the extremely popular Gell Shots. SWIMMING Possibly the very best form of exercise there is, using practically every muscle in the body, swimming is something that can be a weekly hobby or an ever growing challenge if taken to an advanced level. Gear you may need includes swimwear, goggles and floats... and a stopwatch for those looking to really set the standard.
RUNNING Great for burning calories and increasing endurance, over the next few months more and more people will take to Brighton’s streets under the sun. If you plan to be one of them it’s important to make sure that your body can perform at its best so take advantage of specialist running tops and bottoms as they allow sweat to escape while still keeping you warm.

BEACH PATROL
Fancy yourself as a bit of a Hoff? Then get involved with the Brighton Surf Lifesaving Club where you can keep fit, get wet, have fun and learn to save lives Let that just sink in for a second: keep fit, get wet, have fun and learn to save lives! There aren’t many clubs in Brighton that can offer you this rewarding experience. It’s the Brighton Surf Lifesaving Club’s (BSLC) duty to make sure people stay safe and responsible in the water and as summer approaches, along with the prospect of thousands of holidaymakers heading to Brighton Beach for some fun in the sun and sea, it’s vital that things stay that way. Established in 2007, the BSLC was set up by a local group of surfers and lifeguards who have a passion for lifesaving and watersports, and keeping fit, healthy and active. In the few short years since its launch, the BSLC has quickly progressed into a centre that, as well as providing people with a great time in the surf, is dedicated to providing education on lifesaving and beach safety: knowledge not just relevant for the summer months but for a person’s entire life. This year’s Paddle Round The Pier event (Europe’s largest beach festival) will be a busy time for the BSLC, who will be providing a team of experienced water safety officers to make sure everything runs smoothly.
When not at the forefront of Brighton’s beach safety, BSLC members compete in National Surf Lifesaving contests and train regularly with rescue boards, tubes and ropes to stay in top shape. To join the BSLC though, you don’t need to be a fitness fanatic, nor do you have to be a qualified lifeguard. Instead you can join and progress at your own pace and learn all that there is to know about beach safety. Swimming, possibly the best way for you to stay in shape, is obviously a big part of what the BSLC are all about. It is a total body workout and can be a gateway to burning calories and increasing strength and muscle. Regular training takes place at Brighton Watersports (located between the two piers) and at the BSLC (which shares the club room with Brighton Sailing Club, located next to the West Pier). The BSLC has just enjoyed a recent refurbishment with changing rooms, showers and a full bar. As well as being used for training, the club is a great place to enjoy the allimportant social side of things. If you’re interested in getting involved with Brighton Surf Lifesaving Club you can join as a social member from £20 per year. There is also a nipper section being set up this year for children wanting to learn about beach safety. Full membership with the club is £40 per year. Experienced and qualified coaches run regular training sessions in Brighton which are free to all members. FROM RUSSIA WITH TOUGH LOVE Kettlebell training has taken the world by storm recently, but did you know it is also a sport? Our correspondent Ash Phelps went along to speak to EGSA coach Mark Stroud to learn more
Traditionally called Girevoy Sport (Girya meaning ‘kettlebell’ in Russian), the sport uses traditional Russian lifts of snatch, clean and jerk, each of which are performed for a maximum period of ten minutes with the aim to complete as many repetitions as possible without setting the kettlebell(s) down. “As you can imagine this is a very tough sport mentally and obviously physically,” Mark states. “It’s also very technical requiring dedication and focus.” Girevoy Sport emerged in Europe over 60 years ago and requires athletes to work under tremendous stress while remaining calm and even quiet in order to focus on technical precision, breath control and energy conservation. Spectators marvel at the sense of relaxation elite kettlebell lifters display while accomplishing seemingly supernatural feats of strength. There are two forms of seasonal competitions: Biathlon and Long Cycle, each using a weights range from 12 to 32kg per bell. Biathlon is comprised of two kettlebell lifts - the jerk and snatch, which are performed for ten minutes each. Firstly the jerk: Men use two bells of equal weight held against their chest (one for the ladies) in what is called the ‘rack position’. They then power both bells up over their head to complete the jerk movement. This equals one repetition, then it’s back down to the rack position to repeat for the allotted ten minutes. After a rest of up to 30 minutes competitors move on to the second part of Biathlon, the snatch: The snatch
uses power transferred throughout the body from the legs to propel the weight up to a standing fixation point from momentum given from swinging the bell through the legs. At the top point this will equal one repetition. The weight is then dropped down to let swing through the legs once again and the process is repeated for another ten minutes. Current Biathlon world record holder Ivan Denisov from Russia completed the jerk with 2 x 32kg bells and performed 175 repetitions in ten minutes. On a separate day he then broke the snatch record managing 232 repetitions in ten minutes with a 32kg bell - 120 with his right arm and 112 with his left. The Long Cycle features the clean and jerk: For the clean part of the Cycle men use two bells of equal weight held against their chest (one for the ladies) in the rack position. They then let them drop down to swing through their legs and back up to the rack position which they started from. From here they then complete the jerk by powering both weights up above them to stand equalling one repetition. Then it’s back down to the rack position ready to repeat again for ten minutes. Ivan Denisov is again the current world record holder in this, completing 109 reps in ten mins with 2 x 32kg bells! “The man is a machine,” Mark says referring to Denisov. Which is funny because that’s exactly what I said about Mark. Check out the Brighton Active Facebook page for videos, images and news on Girevoy Sport. PADDLE POWER Europe’s largest annual free beach festival returns to Brighton for 2011 bringing water, land and air sporting activities to our rocky shore
This year’s Paddle Round the Pier festival (2nd and 3rd July 2011) will cover a staggering 84,000m2 with over 200 exhibition areas and retail stalls. There will be live music and entertainment for the whole family and the internationally recognised Paddle Round the Pier (PRTP) event on the Sunday afternoon. This charity-led fun festival, which is run by an army of volunteers, saw over 40,000 people attend last year and raised over £35,000 for the RNLI (to help build the new Shoreham Lifeboat Station), Whoopsadaisy and SurfAid International. Here’s some of what you can expect this year:
paddle the most ridiculous thing they can around the pier. Previous races have seen a crane, a plane, an Iceberg and a Wild West wagon to name but a few. Other water events this year include The Euro-Enduro Stand Up Paddleboard 20 mile race, the SLSGB (Surf Life Saving Great Britain) Ocean Ski British Championship 20 mile race, outrigger canoe racing and exhibitions, national open water 3km and 1km swims and many others.
WATER BASED EVENTS The headline ‘Paddle Round the Pier’ event is the world’s biggest water sports raffle. Entrants are awarded one raffle ticket per £5 raised, and compete for chances to win prizes (over £12,000 worth last year) such as surfboards, beach cruisers, snowboards, holidays and wetsuits. The event will see everyone hit the water on-mass to form a carpet of watersport crafts as they paddle round the West Pier. The ‘Paddle Something Unusual’ race invites teams to 40

LAND BASED EVENTS This year will see some great spectator events on show and plenty of activities thatyou’ll be able to take part in. Skateboarding and BMX displays will feature prominently with both professional teams and hot-shot locals taking to the ramps with lessons also available. There will also be rock climbing, zorbing, self defence workshops, streetsurfing, landpaddling, Tai Chi and more. ENTERTAINMENT PRTP will have its own dedicated music arena with up and coming bands playing live music throughout the two days. You’ll be able join the Ukulele Jamboree or have a jive with the Ultimate Cup-Cakes and Brighton Jive Tea Dance.
the organisers ask for a £1 donation if possible, as it makes a tremendous difference to the three charity beneficiaries chosen for this year. These are the RNLI, the Teenage Cancer Trust and Surf Relief. As the festival is run entirely by volunteers and is not-for-profit, sponsorship is vital to the event. The Paddle organisers are always keen to hear from individuals or organisations who would like to help out. For sponsorship or retail / exhibition enquiries please email david@davidsamuelassociates.com. Visit www.paddleroundthepier.com or www.facebook.com/ PaddleRoundThePier to learn more
There will also be beach buggy and cruiser displays, an RNLI off-shore Air / Sea Rescue Display, Lifesaving / CPR drop in clinics, a children’s entertainment arena and more. This year’s PTRP festival will be held on the Hove Lawns and the adjacent beach area (to the west of the old West Pier). Entrance to the PRTP is free but

NUTRITION
PERFORMANCE enhanced
Sports supplements aren’t just for the stereotypical bodybuilder, they’re for everyone! Along with a healthy diet of whole foods, supplements can provide a valuable source of additional nutrition and support when time, convenience or sheer volume of food required proves impractical Sports supplements aren’t also just for men either. Women too can enjoy their benefits, and likewise so can people who aren’t just looking to increase muscle mass. In fact, used in the right way there is a sports supplement out there for everyone to help them achieve their goals whatever they may be. Whether it’s to excel in their chosen sport, burn fat and help speed up metabolism, put on some muscle and size, or just to add an extra kick to living a healthy and active lifestyle. Of course figuring out what supplement would work best for you is the tricky part, and something that should be discussed with the people who know best to save you time and money. So that’s exactly what we did, visiting Performance Foods on Church Road in Hove.
42
BA: Why should someone then look to use sports supplements? PF: Most people should be able to consume the right amount of nutrients from their diet to maintain general health. However, those who exercise on a regular basis will find that their nutritional requirements are greatly increased. Many people involved in intensive training tend to find that they need to eat up to eight meals a day to ensure that they get enough nutrients to recover effectively. Preparing this number of meals and finding the time to consume them all often proves unrealistic, which is why many people turn to sports supplements to aid them with their dietary needs.

“We want to make sure you get the right products for you to achieve your fitness and weight management goals. The internet offers far too much generic and misleading advice; we want to take the guess work out of things and help you find the products right for you” - Performance Foods
Your goals, sporting activities, diet and physical state all play a part in dictating whether supplements are appropriate, and perhaps more importantly, which kind of supplements would be right for you. BA: What supplements are turning heads at the moment? PF: Diet Protein is arguably the most sophisticated diet shake on the market today. Reflex Nutrition have used the latest advances in protein and weight loss technology to produce a product that’s specifically designed to aid those interested in maintaining a healthy, well defined and toned body.
Reflex Nutrition’s One Stop Xtreme is also extremely popular. A hardcore muscle building supplement designed to outperform all other muscle building products on the market. This would be ideal for anyone looking to pack on mass fast and is the only product to contain the exclusive Quattro® protein blend. It’s impressive to know that every single batch is lab tested for protein content to aid strength, performance, protein synthesis, energy and recovery.

NUTRITION
Our office has been converted to the benefits of using sports and health supplements for a while now and can vouch for the fact that they can indeed help enhance sport and general fitness performance by a large scale. They can also help strengthen your immune system, help you recover quicker and keep you fresh and alert throughout your day. We do though stress that the quality of supplement you use is what can really make a huge difference to things and you shouldn’t always be swayed by the ‘Buy one, get one free’ offers you see on TV. This quality of supplement can in fact hinder your performance rather than help it, so make sure you do your research and speak to the people who know what they’re talking about before jumping into anything. 44
For more information on sports supplements and how they can benefit you be sure to visit the Performance Foods store, or call 01273 733453. From the four main styles of tea on offer - black, white, green and flowering - there is something here for every time of the day and for any occasion to suit your mood and taste buds. Whether you want to calm things down, speed things up, jump start your metabolism or kill off that nasty bug going around, the staff at ntcc will be more than happy to recommend something for you after listening to your requests and requirements. We’ve never actually been to a tea house like it! The health benefits behind tea have been well documented over recent years in Western societies such as our own, however in Asia people have been well aware of these for thousands of years! It isn’t just green tea that ticks the boxes either. Here are some of the teas on offer at ntcc that we think should demand your attention next time you’re in town, keeping you fit and healthy from the inside: NEPALESE: BLACK Nepalese tea may help lower the development of cancer and can also speed up the metabolism helping achieve weight loss. It can also lower the risk of cardiovascular disease, reduce blood sugar levels and enhance the immune system.

YING ZHEN: WHITE Bright, fleshy and covered with a tiny silver / white fuzz, Yin Zhen tea has a uniform shape with no stems or leaves (only buds). It helps cool the body internally and contains natural traces of fluoride. Like all white teas it also contains significant amounts of flavenoids antioxidants known to lower cholesterol. In addition to this Ying Zhen is also beneficial in curing infections and colds and helping guard against skin cell damage. Great for the skin and complexion! PU-ERH IMPERIAL TEA: GREEN The many health benefits of Pu-erh tea has lead it to being known as the ‘Wonder Tonic.’ These unique teas have long been used in China for the medicinal benefits and are also believed to have anti-ageing properties that can prolong life. The soothing properties help aid digestion and are perfect after heavy or greasy meals. Recent studies also indicate powerful cholesterol lowering effects, blood cleansing properties and the ability to aid significantly in weight loss efforts. GINGER ROOT TEA: GREEN Ginger Root tea has been a part of the Asian cuisine for 4,000 years and is widely known as the best cure for getting rid of nausea. It also helps prevent morning sickness, menstrual cramps and can aid in fighting off cold and flu bugs. Having one or two cups of ginger root tea a day can also solve digestion problems by helping break down the proteins found in foods quicker. To learn more about these and other teas visit the naked tea and coffee company, located at 3 Meeting House Lane next to the Bath Arms pub. As well as tea they also offer a great selection of nutritious soups, salads and paninis and have an excellent chill out area upstairs. ULTIMATE FITNESS WEEKENDS You don’t need to be in a gym to get a good workout. Outdoor exercises are just as effective, can be more fun and have appealing advantages: • The air is cleaner - The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that indoor air is more than twice as polluted as outdoor air. • You get a free dose of vitamin D - Scientists recommend outdoor exercise as a way to get your vitamin D through sunlight. This is especially important if you are overweight as a recent study found that people who are overweight are almost twice as likely to be deficient in vitamin D. • You exercise your mind, as well as your body - When you exercise outdoors your mind becomes aware of the changing terrain, hills, flat areas and running paths that we take. Your mind has to focus differently than it would do on a flat gym floor or treadmill. Ultimate Fitness Weekends was launched in 2009 by Moez Bayar and Lorraine Ali. Brighton based, they run Fitness Boot Camps throughout Sussex. WEEKEND RESIDENTIAL BOOT CAMP The Weekend Boot Camp is designed for those wanting a kick start to their fitness, energy and health levels in a matter of days. Weekends are open to ladies and gents alike and are suitable for all ages, fitness levels, and abilities. Experienced trainers will work to get the very best out of you from this memorable weekend adventure with the aim to get between 6.5 - 7.5 hours per day of outdoor fitness activities. The weekend involves a two night stay starting on Friday afternoon and ends Sunday evening. The emphasis for the weekend is to boost fitness levels
and to drop a few pounds if that is one of your goals. All meals follow the Low GI Principle which ensures that you are never hungry while you are working out. DAY BOOT CAMP One Day Boot Camps are designed to be flexible and fit around your hectic schedules. The venues are all forest locations which are ideal for training and also for getting away from the hustle and bustle of your normal daily activities. Benefits include a boost to your fitness levels and motivation, plus help with weight loss and plenty of fun at the same time. Used frequently the day camps can be a great indication of how your fitness levels are progressing. 90 MINUTE BLAST BOOT CAMP The Blast Boot Camps are an ongoing fun and challenging workout for all fitness levels. Sessions are held at Queens and Preston Park every Saturday. The 90 minutes are crammed with circuit training, boxing, running, team games and more. Each week brings new and varied sessions that start from as little as £5. Beginners - Intermediate Fitness Levels: Queens Park @ 10am Intermediate - Advanced Fitness Levels: Preston Park @ 3pm For more information call 01273 323223 / 07866424402 or visit www.ultimatefitnessweekends.co.uk www.brightonactive.com

I want to say it’s all about you: your goal, your dream, your body and your life. However for some, the only way to get things done is to do it for others. GAVIN WALSH PERSONAL TRAINING
GWPT has built up a, well-deserved, reputation in London over the years for helping people to achieve health and fitness results they never thought they were capable of. Now he has moved to Brighton to do the same. He is a regular contributor to the likes of Men’s Health, Men’s Fitness and MSN online and has been featured in Harper’s Bazaar, Company, FHM, Zest and other national publications. Not subscribing to fads, gimmicks or trends, he will take you back to basics to strip away the fitness myths and work you harder than you ever thought you could work. It will be worth it. After one month of training with Gavin you won’t recognise yourself: you will be fitter, leaner, healthier, more able to cope with the stresses of everyday life and better educated about your long term health and fitness. He will teach you how to achieve and maintain the body you desire - whether you are looking to lose weight, build muscle, train to improve your performance in a particular sport or sporting event, or simply tone up your squidgy bits. He is not the sort of trainer who will stand there counting your rep’s and holding your towel: he is going to work you hard. He is also not expecting to train you for month after month, year after year. He wouldn’t be doing his job very well if he were, wasting your time and money. You will sit down with Gavin, work out your goals, create a realistic program for achieving them and then go for it. His aim is to get you to where you want to

NEILON PT As a personal trainer, knowing what’s important to my clients and why really helps me to keep them focused and motivated. They could be looking for a confidence boost, an ability to hold their own in the gym or to reduce stress levels. It’s critical for me to work closely with a client’s level of fitness and ability as this can change from moment to moment in the blink of an eye. In my experience, if a workout is varied and encompasses naturalistic movement patterns then it’s more enjoyable and the body responds really well. There are no hard or fast rules, but I generally don’t do isolated exercises. Why would you when you can do one exercise that encompasses strength, power, agility, balance, core strength and cardiovascular fitness!?

Having worked in many different environments I understand the challenges people face with modern day life. Patchy motivation and not getting the results you want can really demoralise things. Sometimes the advice I give can be quite surprising! Like many people I started learning Karate as a kid, but had to stop just before gaining my black belt at 13 due to back problems. A specialist told me that I had spondylolisthesis meaning that my L4 vertebra was 2cm out of alignment with the rest of my spine. This started my life long exploration of the body and movement and I’m now a martial arts instructor and am running this year’s Brighton Marathon - barefoot! It’s my first marathon and I am determined do it in less than four hours. My experience, understanding and intuition has also allowed me to help my clients with injuries including shin splints, knee pain and shoulder issues. I’ve also dealt with conditions such as hypermobility and MS. My career is my passion and I feel blessed to
have the opportunity to make a difference in peoples’ lives. Find out more about Neilon by visiting www.neilon.co.uk and check out his marathon progress on our Facebook page www.brightonactive.com

THE BIRTH OF EXERCISE
After realising that there was not much in the way of activity or fitness classes for women during pregnancy, Rooth decided to launch the Fit-for-Birth initiative, aiming to keep women fit, strong and healthy throughout pregnancy and beyond. Fit-for-Birth offers training, advice on activities, health and nutrition and soon will be offering fitness classes aimed and designed specifically for women during pregnancy. Classes are an hour long and include a warm up followed by the main fitness component which can include functional movements (such as squats or lunges), resistance equipment (such as bands or dumbbells) or toning exercises (including stretches). Classes end with a cool down and reflection or meditation. Working in conjunction with ZT Fitness, Rooth aims to bring fitness to all in the family. “Recent television programmes such as ‘One Born Every Minute’ have brought the reality of pregnancy and birth into our living rooms,” Rooth says. “These help to give women a more honest and realistic view of what pregnancy and birth will entail - although perhaps nothing will ever quite prepare a woman for The 4 point kneeling position gives support and a better sense of contraction through the stomach
Rooth Smethurst of Body Synergy Fitness (featured in Brighton Active 01) is a Personal Trainer and Massage Therapist who also specialises in pregnancy fitness training the amazing and extreme changes her body will go through during pregnancy. Women can though learn to strengthen and prepare their bodies before birth, during pregnancy and beyond birth.” Rooth says that while a woman may not see any great gains in fitness, if she continues to exercise during pregnancy the benefits are numerous. They include: • Strengthening of postural muscles to ease the stress on the lower back and shoulders • Improving circulation and blood pressure • Enhancing immune function for mother and baby “Probably the most common and media-highlighted concern a woman has about her body during pregnancy is weight gain,” Rooth says. “Dieting is never recommended during pregnancy as limiting nutrients and calories may adversely affect the baby’s development, as well as the mother’s health. However, staying active and implementing healthy eating habits will help to keep weight gain during pregnancy within normal limits (the average weight gain being 1-2 stone).” “Health professionals are increasingly concerned with the number of women who go into pregnancy overweight and gain excessive amounts of weight during pregnancy. Mother and baby may be at risk and the rate of complications in pregnancy and birth are higher if a women’s BMI (Body Mass Index) is in the overweight to obese range. Speak to your midwife or GP if you have any concerns regarding these guidelines,” Rooth concludes. If you have any further questions, or want advice about pregnancy fitness training or Fit-for-Birth, contact Rooth on 07813 973813, bodysynergyfitness@gmail.com or visit www.pregnancyfitnesstraining.co.uk

THE HEAT IS ON
Voted the most loved yoga business in the UK, Bikram Yoga Brighton offer hot yoga classes that test your body and mind. Their 30 Day Challenge is perfect for the beginner and BA Editor Ash Phelps was on call to give it a go
Having taken basic yoga classes previously to help me become more flexible and limber, I’ve always been aware of how yoga can help your posture, balance, focus and core strength, for both men and women. The results weren’t instant though and it took me about three months to get to where I wanted to be. It was refreshing then to take up Bikram Yoga Brighton’s 30 Day Challenge, where I not only had great instructors who took the time to help me stretch, bend and push that little bit further each time, but also had the added benefits of practising each yoga class in a 45°C heated room. That’s right, 45°C! This is Bikram Yoga after all. The heat of the room helps your muscles relax and your body warm up. You’ll start to sweat pretty much instantly in your first few classes which helps to eliminate toxins from the body, but over a handful of classes you’ll become more accustomed to the heat and won’t always be reaching for your water bottle. Classes are 90 minutes long, which is a lot longer than most standard yoga classes. I remember in my first few sessions my arms felt like lead after just 15 minutes from performing the first four, out of 26, basic asanas (yoga postures). By the end of these classes I felt like I had worked my body harder than in the most intense gym session. I guzzled down water after the class and couldn’t have jumped into a cold shower quick enough! However it was when I left the centre after my very first session that I already felt a difference. I found myself feeling extremely fresh and alert and also felt
much taller and broader. I had heard that after Bikram Yoga you can temporarily be an inch taller due to the elongation of your spine, but I never actually thought it to be true. Yet here I was, standing proud as I passed a few bystanders who walked by. Over the next 30 days I attended classes at Bikram Yoga Brighton three times a week. It wasn’t long before asanas that were previously beyond me became achievable, and I marvelled at how quickly my body had adjusted to it all. I learnt to control my breathing during the tough postures to help me maintain balance and focus, and found I also had quite the knack for the asanas that involved bending backwards - proof that my back and spine were indeed strengthening. Pretty soon I managed to go a whole 90 minutes without even thinking about having a sip of water. Further proof that with the heated room, expert tuition and challenging asanas, things were really working! CJ and Ricardo, both of Bikram Yoga Brighton, lead each class verbally allowing them to walk freely around the room and give expert guidance to anyone who needed it. Without them my body would have surely opted for the easy ways out, but with their help I found that in each class, right up until my final one, I was able to push myself further than I had previously, and more importantly, found that my body was able to keep up. Bikram Yoga Brighton is based in Olugbenga House on Franklin Road, Portslade. If you’re new to Bikram Yoga you can enjoy their 30 Day Yoga Challenge like I did for just £30. There are also a host of other classes that take place every day of the week. Learn more on their website at www.bikramyogabrighton.com www.brightonactive.com

TARGET PRACTICE Keep active and take on challenges for Brighton based charity, Target Tuberculosis. Whether it’s running, cycling, swimming or any other activity you can think of, you can fundraise amongst friends and family and help people living in desperate poverty to survive TB. Joe Newbigin who ran the 2010 Beachy Head Marathon for Target TB says, “I could not recommend doing a challenge for charity highly enough. Setting a fundraising target may seem daunting at first but it really helped mobilise my family and friends to come out and support me - both financially and emotionally.” Joe raised over £1000 for Target TB, helping save over a hundred lives in Africa and Asia this year. STAND AND DELIVER
Move your gym beyond the shoreline with Brighton Watersports. This issue we’ll be looking at their latest Hawaiian import - Stand Up Paddleboarding
Stand Up What? I hear you ask. Stand Up Paddleboarding (or SUP as the cool kids call it) can be the biggest adrenaline rush and the most rewarding of activities, but strangely it can also be the most relaxing and peaceful hobby you can take up. SUP requires you to use a long canoe style paddle to maneuver yourself around the ocean, all the while standing on a large and very buoyant surfboard. Even those who find it hard to balance on one leg will be able to get going with the basics of SUP on the ocean with the help of the Brighton Watersports team, located between the two piers. Their centre offers regular training and early morning ‘boot camp’ style sessions, as well as being the first centre in the UK to start teaching the sport and developing the core body conditioning work out program that goes with it. Easy to learn, yet difficult to master (as every sport should be), once you’ve got the basics down you can then take your board out into some surf and begin to catch some waves. You’ll learn to use the paddle to help you steer the board along waves, then learn how to use it as a break and pivoting tool to really impress your friends. Finally you can add some serious style to your riding by walking up and down the board while being carried by a wave - guaranteed to attract a few admirers when you get back to shore! This much fun should always be shared though, so get your friends together and try a new social scene to
make the most of the sunny weather of Spring and Summer. With all this paddling, balancing, racing, and showboating, it’s not surprising then that you’ll be getting a killer workout from it all. SUP will help strengthen your arms, shoulders and legs, as well as develop and tone your core. All in all it’s a complete total body workout and a varied and exciting way to stay healthy and in shape! Brighton Watersports have all the gear needed for you to try SUP today. They also offer kayaking, surfing and outrigger paddling which are all free for members of the recently launched Brighton Beach Watersports Club, based out of the same location. Members can also enjoy reduced rates for wakeboarding and waterskiing. If you fancy taking to the seas now you might want to think about hiring a wetsuit (this can also be done from Brighton Watersports), but in peak summer you can brave just board shorts or a bikini (and maybe a pair of sunglasses if you’re feeling equally brave). Regular evening paddles and social events are also arranged. So what are you waiting for?! Start enjoying life and exercise beyond the shoreline today! Membership to the Brighton Beach Watersports Club is only £20 per month. Brighton Watersports have changing rooms, showers and lockers all on location. To learn more call 01273 323160, email club@thebrightonwatersports.co.uk or visit www. thebrightonwatersports.co.uk
One monthly payment of £20 and members can enjoy FREE SUP, kayaking, surfing and outrigger paddling. Plus reduced rates for wakeboarding and waterskiing. www.brightonactive.com

HEALTH TALK
WITH PAUL SIMMONS
Paul Simmons of Frontier Fitness is one of the longest serving personal trainers in Brighton and Hove. Here Paul shares his knowledge on how to keep the spring blues away and stay active and healthy
“
This time of year it can be a real hurdle to maintain a positive attitude towards your health. Whether it be in the gym or playing sport the ‘New Year’s resolution’ stage has worn off and the end of the year seems like a million miles away. The truth is though that the Spring time is one of the best seasons to keep up your health regimes as the days begin to get longer, warmer and brighter. I am always asked about how to stay healthy and keep motivated when everything seems to be going against you. The problem with many people’s aspirations at the start of a New Year is that they do not really picture exercising or playing sport as a way of their life. Even if they can picture it you can guarantee that they will only be thinking about the pain, hard work and unpleasant experiences they imagine themselves suffering for the sake of being healthy. This though could not be further from the truth. Here then are a few simple, yet effective tips that can help you combat any reservations you may have, which in turn will see you living a healthier lifestyle effortlessly: • Try exercising with a friend or partner. • Give group training a go, or join a sports club or activity where you can socialise as well as keep fit. • Make sure living a healthy lifestyle fits around your family and other essential parts of your life. • Remember, being healthy and exercising does not always mean being sweaty and exhausted.

Also don’t forget to mix things up. There are lots of ways to keep fit and make being active and healthy constantly stimulating: • Give exercise videos a go - They’re great if you use them properly and follow them with no distractions. • Exercise in a park - You can use the park to form a circuit. Hove Park even has exercise equipment, all for free! • Run or power walk - Brighton and Hove is one of the most versatile places in the country for outdoor running and walking. Try the seafront, Stanmer Park or Devils Dyke... the list is endless. • Exercise at home - You may need some help here but training at home is easy, quick and can be as effective as anything. A hanging or standing punch bag, dumbbell set, mat or rug and skipping rope will be more than enough to get you on your way (check out the Fitness Shop on Queens Road, Brighton to get you started). • Start a class - Too many to mention here but consider these; dance, martial arts, body pump, kettlebells, yoga, pilates or body conditioning. Within these options you have a magnitude of combinations for variation and fun. My advice would be to mix things up every three weeks or so. You’ll then have no end of spice for things and your motivation will always stay high. Spring is here everyone! So get out there and enjoy yourself.

SKIN DEEP Summer is approaching, which means it’s time to get outdoors and get active! However, as Brighton based beauty therapist Sarah Hurst points out, you should always be mindful of harmful UV rays which can sometimes cause more harm than good It’s great to be able to get outdoors without the worry of the sky opening up on you. Whether you’re jogging along the seafront, biking across the South Downs, or simply enjoying a smoothie outside a local café, this is what makes the summer in Brighton so special. However before you hit the streets in your summer attire you should be mindful of the dangers that being in the sun can cause. With the depletion of the Earth’s Ozone Layer over recent years there are more harmful UV rays leaking in than ever, resulting in what Scientists believe is a 6% increase in skin cancers. The danger is progressively increasing and still the majority of pollutant producing countries have done nothing to change their ways. Many cancers caused by the sun are what are known as ‘rodent ulcers’ (relatively innocuous) or the somewhat more serious ‘squamous carcinoma.’ Doctors however, worry about a more unusually dangerous skin cancer called ‘malignant melanoma,’ which can be fatal if you don’t take care of your skin. Nature tries to deal with excessive sun exposure by increasing the thickness of the skin and by darkening the colour. A thickened, horny layer gives better protection to the skin, but mainly from UV B rays. A tan is actually a scar and is the skin’s reaction to the damage caused by the UV rays! During a particularly sunny day you should be mindful of wearing sensible clothing made of tightly woven cotton for example, and be sure to apply an effective
sun protection to exposed skin such as Environ RAD SPF 16, containing rich doses of free-radical scavengers that combat the effects of sun and pollution on your skin. RAD contains the most important antioxidants normally found in skin, namely vitamin E, vitamin C and beta-carotene. Remember though that we do need to get some UV-B everyday in order to produce vitamin D in our bodies so don’t cover up and block out the sun too much. Life’s like that - a delicate balance of getting just enough and not too much. Antioxidants are a relatively new concept in protecting the skin from the damage UV rays can cause. It is important that you understand that they do not block UV rays from entering into the skin, but can ‘mop up’ the free radicals that cause ageing and tissue damage, even after sunburn. Important antioxidants normally found in the skin include Vitamin E, Vitamin C, Selenium and Glutathione. By all means enjoy the good weather at the moment and over the rest of the year, but always be mindful of the harm the sun can cause and make sure you protect you skin at all times. Sarah Hurst is one of Brighton’s leading beauty therapists with 22 years experience.
