editor’s note As I sit here writing this issue’s Editor’s Note we’ve been blessed with a last dose of sun during the opening weekend of October of all months. The word now is that the temperature will drop, clouds will come in bringing the rain, and we even heard a rumour that it may snow at the months end. It seems then that just by whispering winter’s name it is ready to pounce. Last year was one of the least exciting winters for myself: I was able to drag myself to the gym after a hard days work, but often found my workouts stale and uninspiring. Gains were limited and all too often the attempt to take on an outdoor run, cycle, or a surf were met with reluctance and inevitable failure. It seemed like winter was my biggest enemy. However, as things unrolled earlier this year with a surprise heatwave I began to see things differently. The great outdoors seemed less intimidating and I was able to embrace a wealth of activities including the previously mentioned trio, as well as climbing, hiking and mountain biking. Even the gym was more appealing and I was compelled to test myself in new and exciting ways that quickly resulted in a wealth of successful gains. All in all I could not have been happier! It’s clear to me now though as we approach this year’s colder season that in fact it was not the weather that was my biggest enemy last winter - it was myself. I was the one who let a lack of motivation in the gym get the better of me and I was also the one who decided to give in at the chance to take up new and exciting activities just because of a little rain here and there. My point is that winter can trick us into making us feel unprepared and demotivated. It makes us believe that gateways are closed and that opportunities are minimal. The truth is that winter is just a season and during this time your gym won’t change, nor will your sports club, your bootcamp, your sports store or your personal trainer. Most importantly though you won’t change! So join me in not letting winter get the edge on us this year. After all, another early heatwave could be just around the corner…
Enjoy the issue,
Ash

BRIGHTON NATURAL HEALTH CENTRE FREE OPEN DAY This October the Brighton Natural Health Centre (BNHC) celebrates 30 years as a pioneer in the city’s vibrant holistic health and wellbeing scene. Located at 27 Regent Street (just a five minute walk down from Brighton Station), the BNHC - an educational charity offering a wide range of healthy lifestyle classes - was founded in 1981 by Infinity Foods Co-operative to further its educational aims (read more on this in Brighton Active issue 03 on page 39 online now at www.brightonactive.com). At the time its mix of yoga, tai chi, dance, massage and meditation classes was unique in Brighton and helped pave the way for a massive expansion in public awareness of holistic lifestyles. BNHC is especially proud of its independent, nonprofit status and its commitment, from the beginning, to providing the very best teachers in all the disciplines it offers. With a wide range of classes from Astanga yoga to hula-hooping, BNHC provides inspiration, friendliness, affordability and real quality in the heart of Brighton’s bustling North Laine area. And in furtherance of its aims, BNHC has recently begun offering National Lottery funded outreach classes aimed at minority groups who do not normally have the confidence or means to attend courses at the centre. To celebrate their 30th birthday, the Centre is welcoming everybody to a FREE Open Day on 22nd October. There will be talks, demonstrations, taster classes and the opportunity to talk to teachers about the classes they are offering. www.bnhc.co.uk

GO TO WAR ON FAT WORDS - Ash Phelps
Going to war requires three fundamental elements: preparation, education and determination. Going to war on fat follows the three very same principles - we prepare by getting our mindset in place and having any equipment we need readily set up to go - we educate by learning how to perform movements and motions more effectively and by learning exactly what each exercise can achieve - and we stay determined knowing that it is those last few minutes and repetitions training where all the difference can be made. It is a combo of all three elements together then that allows us to exercise and train each week following a schedule that will result in our desired goals being met - or even exceeded. 14 ISSUE #5 OCTOBER 2011
‘Go to war on fat’ is the motto for Brighton Bootcamp. You may be familiar with Brighton Bootcamp as they hold outdoor sessions along Hove Lawns every Monday and Wednesday at 6pm and every Saturday at 9am. Even in winter these guys are out training with Lead Instructors Paul or Rick donning an LED headlight to help monitor and instruct the class. But did you know that as well as outdoor sessions that Brighton Bootcamp also host indoor bootcamp classes at Bootcamp HQ on Franklin Road, Hove? It was this class that I was invited along to. The Brighton Bootcamp HQ studio has all the tools and space required to get you fighting fit! Upon entering the studio to meet the seven other bootcamp fanatics who I would be joining for a dose of fat zapping, I marvelled at the equipment on show and how the space was expertly used. There were large selections of free weights, boxing bags and pads, TRX cables, swiss balls, benches, mats and more. In fact it was the most well equipped studio that I had ever seen! What impressed me most though was that even with this large selection of equipment there was still plenty of room for us all to warm up for the class with some squats, mountain climbers and lunges.
Paul was in charge for this indoor bootcamp and after our warm up he paired us up and explained how the rest of the session would work. Around their two level studio, seven exercise stations were prepared for us specifically chosen to target different muscles and to get our bodies working at varied tempos. The order that I personally encountered things was as follows: TRX rows, medicine ball power cleans, press ups, kettlebell high pulls, bench dips, incline dumbbell bench press and finishing with two arm kettlebell swings. It was a complete mixture of functional, weight based and bodyweight exercises that in our pairs we performed for five minutes each station before moving straight on to the next. On each station we
were told that one of us should perform ten repetitions while the other rested, then we would switch. This would continue as a cycle for the whole five minutes of each and every station. It was this stop start method that kept our heart rates up and our metabolisms high, meaning that long after the bootcamp would have ended we would all still be burning calories - even if we were sitting down! We were encouraged by Paul to help motivate each other on as things got harder, allowing us to bond with our partners and strike up some comradery. By my third exercise station (press ups) I was really beginning to feel the burn, as was my partner, but we helped each other through it and also began to strike up a bit of friendly competition between us. At times though it was the whole class that needed a little extra nudge of motivation and Paul was there to help inspire us on with a new sense of determination. The final exercise station for us all was of course the toughest. Our bodies were crying out for a break (or perhaps it was just me) but it was here that we all knew the final bit of effort would be worth it. My last station, the two arm kettlebell swing, was perfect for this as it was a full body exercise using everything from my shoulders right the way down to my calves. Paul was monitoring me and the others making sure that we gave it our all, as if it was the very first station where we were most energized. I found myself reinvigorated, as did
other training methods. everybody else. Finally, as Paul finished counting us down from ten seconds to zero we all reached for our water bottles and gave one another the thumbs up while we all caught our breath.
Bootcamps are the in thing right now and for a reason - because they work! But as we pointed out last issue there is a HUGE difference between a professional outfit like the Brighton Bootcamp crew and others jumping on the bootcamp As a keen gym goer I am well bandwagon. We would always aware that by training solo it can recommend going to the pro’s: It’s become increasingly difficult to push yourself through each session what they’ve trained for and it’s what giving 100% every step of the way. they do day in day out, and without a doubt Brighton Bootcamp is one of Even training with a partner can the best in the whole of Brighton and often result in a gossip about the previous weekends activities instead Hove. of the real reason you are in the gym. With bootcamps though these Brighton Bootcamp can help you lose up to 14 pounds in weight and 10% in body-fat hurdles are squashed! Having an in just six weeks! FOREVER FIT WITH MP PT Hello to all, whether you are a new reader or one of our avid followers. I thought I would take an edition out from doing the Q&A page and expand on one of the many questions that I feel needs exploring a little more regarding the training of the older generation. Did you know that the British government consider anyone over fifty years old as an ‘older person?’ As wrong as this sounds it is indeed true. October 1st is even classified as ‘National Older Person’s Day!’ Growing older doesn’t mean you have to lose strength or any of your ability to do everyday tasks. Exercise can help older adults feel better and enjoy life more, even for those who think they’re too old or too out of shape. In reality an inactive lifestyle can cause older adults to lose ground in four areas that are important for staying healthier for longer and in maintaining their independences: strength, balance, flexibility, and endurance. Exercise can also benefit older people by improving mood and outlook. Inactivity however can do a number of things to your psychological well-being including your self-esteem taking a nose dive. 16
ISSUE #5 OCTOBER 2011
Just by simply stretching, walking and staying socially active you can help improve your own outlook on life, and with an improved outlook you may notice changes in your physical well-being. Which leads me to the question: How old is too old to train? Or indeed to use a gym? Well the good thing about exercise is that it can be tailored to meet all age groups, including those that have medical reasons, or who feel they are no longer able to take part. There are so many sufferers of ailments such as Arthritis (not just within the ‘older generation’) or even Osteoporosis. Doctors even suggest light exercise for such conditions as well as others. In many cases though that is where their help ends. So where should you turn from that point? All health clubs will have staff on hand to advise on which exercises are suitable, but few will have a specific person or group designed to benefit those requiring the help. Which brings me nicely onto a plug for my own training group, for those over 50. Currently our oldest
member is in her 80’s! Forever Fit has been especially designed for those over 50 who want to combine a fresh new social life with a healthier, fitter lifestyle. It combines group warm ups with personal gym programmes and varied group classes as well as various social outings. If you or someone you know would benefit from joining such a group contact me for more details or take a look at my website. If you’re new to exercise, start slow and work on increasing it over time. The benefits of activity far outweigh the risks. Don’t forget that exercise is supposed to be fun, so whatever you choose to do, enjoy it and stay healthier for longer. FUNCTIONAL TRAINING GOES MASSIVE IN BRIGHTON Functional training is fast becoming one of the most popular ways to exercise. Kettlebell bootcamps and ViPR sessions are popping up all over Brighton, but what exactly are the advantages and who can benefit from this increasing popular way to workout? Functional training refers to a way of working out that mimics actions and movement patterns that we would do in real life. Functional training helps you function more effectively both in sports and everyday life by improving your whole body fitness,’ says Ryan O’Gorman, Fitness Manager at Freedom Leisure. When you are using a machine in the gym, the movement is controlled and restricts you to using certain muscles. Performing a functional exercise - which allows free movement - is more challenging, both mentally and physically because you have to work harder to control the movement from start to finish. This means greater calorie burn and a faster route to your weight loss goals. Over the last couple of years we have seen an influx of new functional equipment such as the kettelbell, ViPR, clubbell and TRX. Rather than just pushing a weight from A to B this kit allows greater range of motion and an unlimited amount of exercise
possibilities. It seems that the exercises are greater than the sum of their parts: ‘Functional training involves more than simply increasing the force-producing capability of a muscle or group of muscles like simply lifting weights in the gym,’ explains O’Gorman. ‘Regular functional training will enhance the coordinated working relationship between the nervous and muscular systems.’ In real terms this means improved sporting performance and reduced risk of injury. While some people are put off trying functional training because of the intimidating appearance of the equipment, it’s really not as scary as it looks. ‘Functional equipment can to be used by anyone of any age and ability to improve strength, fitness and co-ordination,’ says O’Gorman. ‘The versatile nature of the equipment means that exercises can be modified to make them easier or more challenging.’ Freedom Leisure has just launched a new class called Massive Attack. Each session is made up of a circuit of functional exercises and uses a variety of equipment including ViPRs and Kettlebells. ‘It is a great workout that burns up to 800 calories while giving you a chance to try out something you can’t necessarily mirror in a gym environment,’ says O’Gorman. ‘The sessions are very popular and definitely put the FUN in functional!’ Massive Attack sessions take place at Moulsecoomb, Stanley Deason and King Alfred Leisure Centres. To book onto the next Massive Attack session call 01273 622266 or visit www.freedom-leisure.co.uk

Peter Harvey, owner of Performance Foods in Hove is ready to change the way women look at sports supplements. Here’s what he has to say...
