EE DD I T O R ’ S N OO TT EE worked together and helped encourage and motivate one another on the day. We shared tips and success stories, educated each other about bad habits and poor technique and helped pick the other person up when they were down - just like I'm sure any Olympic team had been doing at exactly the same moment.

Being a part of a team really is something special... As I sit here writing this issue's Editor's Note I think about all the Olympic athletes arriving in London for the monumentous sporting event which is of course the 2012 Olympic Games. These athletes would have trained in their teams or training camps for months now, if not years, all with their eyes on winning gold. Together they would have shed blood, sweat and tears. They would have helped motivate each other, support each other, and at times even be critical of each other. They would have gained one another’s trust, so much so that they would know what the other person, or team members are thinking even before they do. And when it all comes to a head on the grandest stage of them all, they would have reached their absolute peak in sporting performance and will be more than ready to give it their absolute all for their country. However, despite their gruelling training schedules, multi-million pound endorsements and the fact that they will be on live TV with the whole world watching, there really is no difference between being a part of an Olympic team and being a part of a local team right here in Brighton and Hove. Recently I've had the pleasure of taking part in a host of local sporting and fitness events. Some people at these events I knew well, whereas many of the others I had met for the first time. Regardless of this, we all 8
And when it was all over we shared a celebratory drink, toasted our good health and regularly keep in contact to this day. I would now class these people as my friends. In my eyes though, a team does not necessarily have to be formed on the sport or track field. You can be a part of team when attending a local bootcamp or martial arts class. Or when you paddle out among a handful of surfers or kayakers. Or when you go with a friend to play golf, rock climb or swim. You can even be a part of team without even knowing it when jogging alongside someone along the seafront, where you can bet that either they or you will strike up a bit of friendly competition to help push the other person, even if briefly, to up their game. Yes, being a part of a team really is something special. Whether there's 20 of you, ten or you, or just two of you. Whether you know the other person or not, I cannot recommend highly enough that you use this issue of Brighton Active as motivation to try your hand at being a part of team. Remember, you don't have to be an Olympic athlete to experience what being part of a team feels like. And you certainly don't need a medal as a reminder of your accomplishments. All you need is a friend. Let the games begin!

THE GREAT OUTDOORS With the sun shining, the last thing many people want to do is slave away in gyms. Personal Trainer and Central YMCA’s Darren O’Toole, examines the alternative fitness venue that is proving increasingly popular With figures suggesting that 8.7 million adults in the UK currently hold a gym membership equating to only 17% of the population, it poses two key questions; where are many people getting their exercise fix and for instructors, is their market for clients narrowing? Perhaps the answer to the former lays within the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) top 20 fitness trends for 2012, with both outdoor fitness and boot camp classes featuring in this list. Furthermore, according to a poll of 1000 physically active women, commissioned by sports bra company Shock Absorber, the numbers opting for training outdoors has risen by half in five years. So with this in mind, what is the appeal of training in the great outdoors? For many, gym memberships require a great deal of commitment. They often require you to sign up to extended contracts at no small cost. The Office of Fair Trading has recently looked into the legality of some lengthy gym contracts to see 14 ISSUE #9 AUGUST 2012
BtnActive#9_REPRO.indd 14
if they have appropriate release clauses for members. In these times of austerity where people are unsure about what they will be doing in three months let alone a year, an increasing number of people seem more cautious when committing to lengthy contracts. Many people are working out how often they visit a gym per month and whether there are alternatives which are more cost-effective. This drive is leading people towards either paying for individual sessions in private studios or joining the merry band of exercisers who are working out outdoors. EMBRACE THE ENVIRONMENT A coastal city such as Brighton offers an abundance of outdoor training opportunities, with its large amount of green space along with its famous pebble beach. The beach in particular can offer a resistance to running which far outweighs the options offered by an incline alteration on a treadmill. Of course let us not forget the sea itself, offering a wonderful training opportunity for confident swimmers
or those looking into competing in triathlons. The sea could also be utilised for rehab purposes, with individuals who are looking to get back into running without placing the same impact upon the joints. However, as a fitness professional, I do acknowledge that much of this depends on the weather. It would be unwise to proclaim that the sea offers the perfect training ground throughout the winter months, however if this summer ever arrives, it is certainly worth considering . One of the main beneficiaries of this gradual swift to outdoor exercising is the ‘boot camp’ specialists, British Military Fitness. Active in over 100 parks across the UK, an array of serving or ex-armed forces exercise professionals are leading classes full of willing victims. For instructors, the fun aspect of these classes makes it very appealing as Dave Bolas, Regional Manager for British Military Fitness explains: “You will not find another job in the industry that will give you as much of a buzz. All the instructors have great fun instructing. Each of our instructors
29/07/2012 19:49
is different but all have a strong, dynamic personality and genuinely enjoy working with their clients. This rubs off on those taking part, and their enjoyment is evident too.” BIG BUSINESS For many freelance personal trainers who are training clients outdoors often forms the basis of their business. Peter Bradley of PB Fitness explains the benefits to his business of outdoor sessions: “By using the environment, not only do
you keep the costs down of buying expensive equipment, but you can also make the session different and fun for your clients each time. The outdoors is so vast, that you can take a large number of exercisers which increases your income.” In addition to the obvious benefits of the workouts, Peter recognises the wider impact of these classes on both his business and the health of those taking part, surmising: “Some of my class attendees have
"It seems that with the summer of sport upon us, the appeal of going out into the local park or beach for a workout is high on the agenda for many. For instructors, the profitability of these sessions is clear and for the exercisers, the classes offer a commitment-free workout where you can breathe in fresh air, have fun with a group of like-minded exercisers, and most importantly, get fit and healthy"
told me that they dislike the gym, and without doing my classes, they wouldn’t be exercising at all. This demonstrates how important it is to show people that exercising isn’t all about slaving away on a treadmill. I’ve also been able to gain some personal training clients from my classes, as they have seen how I teach and what I am like, and this breaks down a major barrier that certain people have. The prospect of using a PT can be scary as the perception is that they are all big, strong and intimidating, but the reality is different and through attending classes, I was able to change their mind-set.”

A STUMBLING BLOCK So the benefits for the exerciser and the instructor seem clear. However, of late, some councils in London have started charging instructors to use their parks. The Register of Exercise Professionals reported its ‘disappointment’ with the findings, and a very real fear exists that cashstrapped councils up and down the country could follow suit with these charges to attempt to raise further revenue. It poses the question; will this stop the rise of outdoor instructors and exercisers? Brighton resident and YMCAfit 16
Tutor and Personal Trainer, Justin Bailly doesn’t think so, viewing: “The charges are not ideal, but I don’t think it will impact too heavily on the industry. If it means that each exerciser has to pay a small amount more per class, hopefully it shouldn’t put off too many. I think the main issue is the message the charges send. It seems that getting the country healthy and taking a little bit of strain off the NHS doesn’t seem a concern, it is quite short-sighted.” It seems that with the summer of sport upon us, the appeal of
going out into the local park or beach for a workout is high on the agenda for many. For instructors, the profitability of these sessions is clear and for the exercisers, the classes offer a commitment-free workout where you can breathe in fresh air, have fun with a group of like-minded exercisers, and most importantly, get fit and healthy. Darren is an Assessor on YMCAfit's Outdoor Fitness courses which are part of the Advanced Diploma in Personal Training course. If you are interested in a career in fitness, YMCAfit will be running courses in Brighton. For more information, visit www.ymcafit.org.uk or call 020 7343 1850.

PERSONALLY SPEAKING Martin Petrie of MP Personal Training answers your health and fitness questions. Email martin@ brightonactive.com with yours Q: Having just had a hernia operation I would like to start training again, when would you envisage the best time? What would you advise as the starting point, i.e. the type of exercise to start with? - Malcolm Brett A: After having a hernia a few years ago, i think i can help you out with this one. I wasn't allowed to train using weights for 12 weeks after the operation. it was highly suggested to just work my core, only lightly mind. Core training would involve static holds, so no leg lowering, reverse crunches in fact no crunches at all. Hope that helps.
Q: With the TRX and bootcamps being so popular what do you think is going to be the 'next big thing'? - Dubes A: Unfortunately I think all these home systems such as Xbox’s Kinect fitness, will be huge. Which of course has its good points as it will work well for those who lack the confidence to train within a group. But it may kill off personal training to a point. But for those who thrive on the feeling of group training then its got to be CrossFit. it is still just getting its name out there at the moment, but it is taking the world by storm.
Q: What is the best way of building my traps? - Mark Mills A: Shrugs with dumbbells to warm up followed with upright rows, t-bar row with an underhand grip. all finished off with 2-3 sets of power shrugs performed with a BB (you may need straps to aid your grip on the bar). But don't forget that you do still work them when performing other exercises, such as shoulder press and bench press.
Q: Are rolling sit ups a good exercise to do? - Chris
18
A: I’m actually in two minds about Rolling sit ups myself. Mainly because it uses momentum created via the legs to get the upper body moving. Meaning it takes out the element of control from the abdominals flexion of your trunk. I would also see them being done to quick/wrong in the gym too. But in a core activation frame of mind I like them, but again the technique has to be spot on.
Let's prep ourselves up from this current non existent summer with a good health and fitness push! For the limited time of August and September Team MP PT is offering an 'Off Peak Package Price' for those who can train between 9am and 5pm Mon-Fri. HOW
MOTIVATED ARE YOU TODAY? How is your self-belief, do you really believe that you can achieve the goals that you set?
I believe that self-belief and motivation are interlinked; you cannot be motivated if you do not believe that you can succeed! At the end of July, Bradley Wiggins of Great Britain won the Tour de France - for years an unthinkable achievement for a British rider. But what is also amazing is that the guy in second is also British, so two British riders were capable of winning! For years Bradley was seen as a great track cyclist, but limited when it came to road races. He also suffered from severe self-doubt; yes he was a multiple world and Olympic champion, but like many people he suffered from a lack of self-belief at times. So how did he go from a
top track cyclist to the world’s best road cyclist? He enlisted the help of a sports psychologist to help him reprogram his thought process. He was taught to train his brain to think positively instead of negatively, instead of thinking 'I can’t', he learnt to think 'I can'. This change in thinking allowed him to tap into his true potential. Instead of being a cyclist who has great potential but was crippled with self-doubt, he became a supremely confident athlete capable of achieving great success. Many times in my career as a Personal Trainer I have been confronted with clients who suffer from self-doubt. These clients have developed a negative mind-set that prevents them from achieving
their true potential, they fear trying something because they do not believe that they can actually do it. They refuse to jump a certain height on box-jumps through fear of falling, or they self-limit on how much weight that they can lift on certain exercises. At Brighton Bootcamp we have a saying, 'It doesn’t matter if you can, it doesn’t matter if you can’t, it only matters that you try!' So what is my point? If you want to achieve your goals, you have to be motivated, but to be truly motivated you have to have self-belief. Never self-limit because you do not really know your true potential. Cultivate a mind-set that says 'I can', and with all your self-belief and confidence go after your goals with the heart and will of a champion. Be all that you can be! At Brighton Bootcamp we believe that the path to success starts with the mind, a strong mind leads to a strong body. HOLLY GEHLCKEN One half of the face behind Reebok CrossFit Connect in Hove, we speak to CrossFit addict, Olympic lifting champion and all round supermum, Holly Gehlcken Hi Holly. You're a Head Coach at Reebok CrossFit Connect. Give us a run down to how you got here After becoming a Personal Trainer in 2007 I was introduced to the CrossFit way of training through someone on the PT course. I was instantly hooked and blown away by how challenging and rewarding it was. I instantly started training this way myself and shortly after went and completed my Level 1 CrossFit Cert in San Diego, USA. Over the next couple of years I taught CrossFit to my clients and larger groups. The results both they, and I achieved were amazing!
When did you begin competing in Olympic lifting? I started competing in 2010, spending a good year beforehand training solidly for my weight category. In 2010 I came first in the Southern, British and World Masters. In 2011 I chose not to compete in the WM due to other commitments, but did come first in the Southern and British Masters. I then came first in the 2012 Southern Masters. For the rest of this year I'll be training in preparation for 2013's events.
Tell us how you launched the CrossFit Connect Box in Hove CrossFit Connect launched in March 2011 after I met Were you familiar with Olympic lifting when you David Draper at a local gym I was teaching at. Why do you think your members get better results than people who attend a regular gym? We provide constantly varied, functional movements performed at a high intensity. We're constantly changing everything so you'll never hit a plateau, and make sure that things are always kept interesting so that people keep coming back. Now that you've recently affiliated with Reebok, how do you see things growing for yourselves and CrossFit in general over the next year? CrossFit is set to become HUGE within the UK with the Reebok brand behind things. As a Box, we have some great plans including running more courses and specialist classes, similar to our Olympic Lifting class. We'll also be launching CrossFit Kids this September after I complete the required certification, and shortly looking to expand into a larger premise to cope with our growing numbers.
When you go into a regular gym, the weight lifting area can often be a very intimidating place to be. We open up weight lifting to all fitness levels in a friendly and sociable environment. It's not all about weight lifting though, and all our workouts are scalable. We have a large number of men and women of all ages currently enjoying the benefits of CrossFit. Change to Come down and give us a try for FREE to see for yourselves! The South Island Showdown takes place in August. Are we going to see more of these CrossFit competitions over the next year? Without a doubt, CrossFit competitions will be popping up all over the place. The great thing about the competitions is that they bring all the Boxes together. CrossFit thrives on a community spirit. Having these get-togethers makes the community even closer, and sets us apart from other gyms. Everybody loves it! YOUR CHANCE TO BE A SPORTING If you love sport now’s your chance to make a difference Danielle (pictured), who has travelled around England on behalf of Sport Makers, at a workshop at the Brighton Centre in June
There’s a scheme running in Brighton that aims to get more people taking part in sport across the city - it’s about training people to be sporting volunteers and it’s called Sport Makers. Sport Makers are the people who make sport happen, either by arranging an activity for themselves and their friends, or helping to organising an event for others. involved in sport you’ll be doing something amazing for your friends Tell us more and local community as well as According to a recent survey by having fun yourself,” he says. BACK TO NETBALL IN BRIGHTON Netball is England’s most popular female team sport. Even if you haven’t played since school it’s easy to get back into and it’s great for socialising as well as fitness. Joining a team, or ‘Back to Netball’ Club is the ideal way to get fit while having fun Netball involves explosive movement, quick changes of direction and short bursts of high intensity activity. Regular training will help you to develop speed, agility, coordination and explosive power. Brighton has its own netball league but if you’re not ready to get into competitive matchplay, a Back to Netball session is a great place to start. The Back to Netball scheme aims to help women who have not played since their school days rediscover their love of netball.
A netball team is made up of seven players in defensive, attacking and centre court positions. ‘With just seven players on your team, play can be incredibly fast paced,’ says Taylor-Nunney. A match is made up of four quarters of 15 minutes and in an energetic game you can burn up to 600 calories. ‘Game play will help you develop fitness and improve agility, timing and awareness,’ she adds.
Back to Netball sessions are suitable for women aged 16+. Everyone is welcome regardless of their level of experience and all abilities are catered for. Get fit, have fun and make friends through Back to Netball sessions at Withdean Sports Complex and King Alfred Leisure Centre. Find out more at www.freedom-leisure.co.uk
‘A typical Back to Netball session involves drills, skills and fun matchplay’ says Rosie TaylorNunney, coach of the Back to Netball sessions at Freedom Leisure’s Withdean Sports Centre. ‘We tend to focus on one aspect of the game per session so one week we will learn about attacking, and the next we’ll focus on defending or shooting for example. We finish each session with a short game where players can put the skills they have learned into a game situation.’ www.brightonactive.com

A UNIQUE WAY TO GET STAND UP PADDLE BOARDING AND FIT THIS SUMMER Have you tried Stand Up Paddle boarding (SUP) yet? If not then read on, as here is the perfect way to get you on that board, spend time outdoors and on the water, and get fit at the same time! ‘SUPing’ as it is affectionately called, originates from the idyllic island of Hawaii and uses a board which you stand on whilst paddling to help propel you along. SUPing is fun, easy and suitable for all, and it gives you an effective, total body work out. SUP workouts differ slightly from your average workout as not only do you get to spend time on the water in a safe relaxing atmosphere, but SUPs are also an excellent workout tool which make your body work twice as hard by having to balance whilst doing the exercises and working on your core, stamina, flexibility, strength and balance. SUP Fitness is also a great way for water sports enthusiasts to strengthen the muscles they use for water sports and to help prevent injuries. Lagoon Watersports at Hove Lagoon, Brighton, currently offer unique ‘Paddle Fit in 6 weeks’ courses with dates starting throughout the summer. The 6 weeks course is priced at just £50, which is an 26 ISSUE #9 AUGUST 2012

anyone who hasn’t been on a SUP before. If you don’t want to commit to a 6 weeks course then you can just book a two hour 'Learn to SUP' lesson on Hove Lagoon after which you will be ready to hire a SUP and paddle on the sea, as well as join their active SUP Club. All classes are run by an REPS qualified Personal Trainer and Indo Board Fitness Instructor and are based at Lagoon Watersports, Hove Lagoon, Brighton, with access to the clubhouse, changing facilities, showers, café and the ION chill out area. The classes use Stand Up Paddleboards (SUP) and INDO Boards which are combined alongside traditional exercises to give a new, effective and unique workout experience. Call 01273 424 842 or go to www. lagoon.co.uk for further details on all courses and to book now, and like the Facebook page www. facebook.com/LagoonFitness. See you at Hove Lagoon!
