EDITOR’S NOTE Is it too early to start celebrating our one year anniversary? I guess so. Although, if some people are reading this magazine just before issue 05’s release in October then we are proud to say that it is only a couple of months away... Back to the present though and at the time of writing and we are actually over half a year old! And what a year it has been so far. Taking a second to reminisce it’s amazing that already Brighton Active has been a part of some of the biggest sporting and activity based events that Brighton & Hove have to offer. Not least over the course of this summer where we proudly attended the TAKEPART International Festival of Sport and Paddle Round the Pier (more on page 38). Having our place at these summer events helped heighten exposure for the magazine for anyone who has only just come out of hibernation and was yet to pick up a copy. It was also a great opportunity for us to provide people with a host of information on what sports clubs, gyms, personal trainers and other activities we would personally recommend. For anyone then reading this magazine now after being introduced to their new hobby with our help, all we can say is to keep up the good work and enjoy these last couple of warm months before the winter chills begin to come in. This issue then we’re highlighting even more local sports and activities Brighton & Hove have to offer. Your health is important to us but let us not forget that we can only provide you with the necessary tools to take the first steps into things. The rest is up to you. So have a read though this issue and if anything pops out at you don’t put it off until another day, instead get involved with things NOW! Or perhaps if now is during work time then certainly this week. Once you find that hobby that you’ll enjoy not only will you become fitter and healthier but you’ll open a door to a host of new challenges against the only person who really matters - YOU. Summer won’t be around for long now, so make the most of it.
Healthy Regards,
Ash

FIT FOR LIFE Following on from our ‘Life Force’ feature last issue where we shedded some light on what you need to know to become a Personal Trainer, we now speak to YMCAfit Advanced Diploma in Personal Training Tutor, Trevor Clarke, who goes into more detail for anyone looking to make a career change.
Hi Trevor, how long have you been a Personal Trainer (PT) and why did you decide to become a PT? I’ve been a PT for about 15 years now. The idea of becoming a fully qualified Personal Trainer as well as doing something I enjoy really appealed. That was what got the ball rolling. I did my first course to be a Gym Instructor in 1986 and then after that did some work in a gym. Gradually I then began to get my own clients and so started personal training. How did things then evolve to where you are now - as a Personal Trainer Tutor with YMCAfit? I actually started working for YMCAfit back in 1988 after approaching them declaring my interest to become a 14 ISSUE #4 AUGUST 2011
tutor. They got me involved and things spiralled from there. It was shortly after this that I became a PT myself. At this time though we weren’t actually running a specific Personal Trainer course like we run today, we were just running the Gym Instructor / Fitness Instructor course. The actual Personal Trainer course was developed around 13 years ago. Is there a set amount of courses you tutor each year or is it a bit more complicated than that? Each course lasts three months with one week on and one week off (for more information on this read issue 03’s YMCAfit feature free online at www.brightonactive. com). In many cases we’ll be teaching two different
courses at the same time at different venues as they run every other week. To put a finger on a set number of courses is tough but it’s safe to say that this is a full time job. When you first meet a new group that you’ll be teaching for the next three months, is it possible to quickly tell who has an edge among the students? I wouldn’t make any assumptions of people on the first day at all. It’s impossible to judge who has an edge even if certain people are in great shape. What we’re looking for is for people to develop over the duration of the course. There will be people who stand out as quite forward, fresh and knowledgeable but that’s not to say that other people won’t develop these particular skills over time. Last issue we spoke to Sharon Spark who is now a fully fledged PT thanks to the help of YMCAfit. She told us that the courses are a mixture of theory and practise. How do you think this mixture benefits the students? Based on our understanding of how people learn we try and offer a combination of the theoretical basics on how the body works and exercise techniques, and then we
put it all into practise. They’ll be some people who will prefer the practical element over the theory and others who will prefer the theory over the practical. In order to be a good instructor you need to understand the fundamentals of how the body works with the theory and then you’ll need to be able to make sure people are exercising correctly and safely with the practical element. The combination works really well and is necessary for a PT. Can you give me an idea of an average day under your guidance? We like to keep each day constantly varied and stimulating, especially as the course progresses. If we take the Gym Instructor course, which is the first course we do, students might start the day by going down to the gym and having a look at the equipment, learning more about what each piece can do and what body parts they target. We don’t just like to stand there and lecture people, instead we like to break the group up into smaller groups and get them each learning something specifically. The groups will then rotate. This ensures that the students also develop the communication and rapport skills which are vital part to being a personal trainer. As Sharon also mentioned in the last issue we do like to get people outside and get

them working up a sweat with some exercises. It’s just as important that people actually feel what an exercise is doing rather than just being told about it. What tools or techniques would you use if someone is struggling in a particular area of the course? Individually I try and help as many people as I can on each course with any questions they may have. We also use regular recaps and quizzes to make sure the knowledge that people are acquiring is constantly kept fresh. This can also help highlight areas that people may need a little bit of help with. At YMCAfit, all tutors are fully trained with a PGCE or Cert Ed, so we are very well trained to deal with all different learning styles. Anyone though who is struggling with something specific, the theory for example, is given more time if necessary to achieve success. They may not be successful on their first attempt but they can go on a second and a third attempt if necessary, just like a driving test. Outside the classroom we also have a support team that is available.
gentleman a couple of courses ago. He was very interested in exercise and wanted to change his current job and move full-time into the fitness industry. He said to me that he was keen to make a good business out of it and after leaving the course on day one went out and found a job straight away in a gym. Thanks to his personality and knowledge obtained through the course he started to gain a lot of clients at an alarming rate, The support given by YMCAfit really is exceptional. subsequently making him one of the top trainers at the How crucial is it then to continue to offer this high gym he was working for. you’ll find in our brochures. It is also a pressure-free evening as we don’t have pushy salesmen, but instead have a tutor and an advisor who can help you to make your own decision. This reflects our ethos, as this course may not be right for everybody, but we give an opportunity for anyone who is interested to come down and have a look for themselves. I actually present some of the open evenings myself and I enjoy telling people YMCAfit Personal Training Tutor, exactly what I’m going to be doing Trevor Clark when I’m teaching the course and the opportunities for them as a fully fledged personal trainer. I do love what I do, so I always encourage YMCAfit offer regular open evenings for anyone anyone who has ever thought about it, to book an open interested in becoming a Personal Trainer. These evening and potentially start a career where you never must be hugely beneficial for anyone looking to get that Monday morning feeling. learn more? Yes, they are. What we really try to achieve on an open If you would like to know more about becoming a evening is to give people a flavour of what YMCAfit are Personal Trainer telephone 020 7343 1850, email about. The presentations that we give on the course at bookings@ymcafit.org.uk or visit www.ymcafit.org.uk each open evening are much more detailed than what cycling and has now gone head over heals for this. It’s really nice when you see someone find a new passion and go a different direction from what they previously know. But not only that, the people that we train will then go on to help change people’s lives. The people that we train not only go on to a financially lucrative career, but some will train further and specialise on referral schemes or work with people with disabilities to make a real profound difference in their lives.

Q
: I’m not at a gym but I do work out three times a week at home. I usually do a circuit of press ups, sit ups, squats... the bodyweight stuff. I want to gain muscle though and am not sure if this is really working. Is there then a way to work out at home and gain muscle? Or am I going to have to give in a join a gym? Stevie K
could suggest a supplement that could give more energy prior to training? There are so many items on the market all offering wonderful results it’s hard to know how true they are. Malcolm B
A: There will be a point where body weight will stop being enough. Now gyms won’t like me for suggesting this but, have you thought of using a simple backpack filled with anything you could use and vary for resistance? I’m also hoping you have a chin up bar or solid door frame for doing back work... Also don’t forget that results are 70% diet based! once that is in place gains will be achieved.
A: I agree there are so many options on the market, but one has to be careful of any confliction with any medication you may be taking, for example blood pressure. Try to Limit your sugar intake and avoid candy and junk foods. These foods release quick energy which goes straight to your fat stores. Complex carbohydrates such as oats, sweet potatoes and other whole grains provide sustained energy for your daily activities, and for a boost a good few of my older clientèle swear by having a cup of coffee 20 minutes prior to training.
Q
: How many times and how long should I exercise each week? Is three one hour sessions better than six half hour sessions a week? Michael W
Q
A: Well it all depends on what you’re trying to achieve. 3x one hour sessions are good if your able to sustain the right intensity for that period of time. 6x half hour sessions is a little over kill, especially if you’re really pushing it during all sessions. I would recommend no more than two days back to back followed by a rest day. For ways of splitting your current workout to suit this structure ask your gym as reviews with an instructor are usually free with your membership.
A: On the negative front there is a lot of competition out there so staying on top (or close to it) does make it hard. Plus If your not really good at time management you will also suffer. There are though many positives: having the independence to go freelance and the potential for high earning just a couple of them. Being a qualified PT is all good but the course doesn’t give you experience, so take your time and get in some gym instruction first. A final tip to being a good PT: find what’s unique about you and roll with it.
Q
: I train twice a week and really enjoy it, especially being an older person at 65. I take a protein powder after training but wonder if you 18

CROSSFIT EVOLUTION Launched in March this year, CrossFit Connect in Hove is going from strength to strength. Still not sure how Crossfit can benefit you? Then let us enlighten you... Since featuring in issue 02 of Brighton Active, CrossFit Connect has been steadily building its membership base and growing in stature. Achieving this without any large scale advertising but through word of mouth is a tribute to the results our members are achieving and the level of service and instruction our coaches provide. We live and breathe CrossFit and this passion spreads to our members through challenging but fun classes that continually push them to perform at their highest level. So what exactly is CrossFit? With its growing exposure in national fitness magazines and its recent partnership with Reebok you will hear a lot more about this highly effective functional fitness movement over the next 12 months.
CrossFit is defined as constantly varied, functional movements performed at a high intensity. This means running, rowing and jumping and lifting, throwing, pushing and pulling as many different objects in as many different combinations as possible. Our small group classes, carefully programmed to develop skills in a broad range of activities, are constantly varied to encourage the biggest bodily adaptation or change. You will get stronger, faster and fitter than you ever thought possible. In our own private waterfront studio next to Hove Lagoon our members learn interval training, gymnastics and the Olympic weight lifting movements with each class perfectly scalable to the individual. This allows for even a complete fitness novice to participate and feel the camaraderie that CrossFit Connect provides. The friends you make and the bonds that form whilst encouraging each other through that last set of press ups or box jumps translates into an eagerness to train harder and a desire to push through your limits in learning new movements and lifts. There are now over 60 CrossFit boxes in the UK as people realise that the results they get from CrossFit training and coaching far outweigh any results they may have seen from their regular gym sessions. A free taster class runs every Sunday at 11am which allows you to feel for yourself the benefits that our training provides. If another time would be more convenient just get in touch. Details of our Intro courses, memberships and class times can be seen on our website at www. crossfitconnect.co.uk plus an intro video can be seen on our blog page. GLASS JAW
WORDS Ash Phelps
When Boxercise Bootcamp founder, Guy Sica invited me along to take part in one of his famous boxercise classes two things popped into my mind: when, and where Since launching Brighton Active at the very start of this year part of my job has been to keep my ear to the ground to hear what classes, gyms and PT’s have been getting the praise. It’s amazing hearing people’s success stories and who they would recommend.
And so the day came. I arrived at the Ajex Centre (near Sussex Cricket Ground) at 7pm, water bottle full to the brim. Guy had taken to the small stage at the front with a catchy compilation album beating out from around the hall. Everyone quickly faced forward and, in sync with Guy, began following his movements in what was a high tempo 15 minute warm up that got the blood pumping. In between the odd lunge forward and star jump I took some time to glance around the room and was amazed to see that all 75 people were in complete unison with each other. Not a single person was resting or taking cover to have a gossip with the person next to them. Everyone was here to work! This, I thought was a great start.
I’ve been lucky enough myself to try my hand at some of the best classes and activities Brighton & Hove have to offer, but was especially excited about taking part in what would be my very first Boxercise Bootcamp in July of this year. Not only had I heard some amazing stories recommending Boxercise Bootcamp for blasting away fat and working up a nice sweat, but had also heard some great feedback on Guy himself and the rest of his trainers. This was something I had to see for myself. What was interesting was that the class was much bigger than any others I had previously participated in, with 75 members set to fill the Ajex Centre in Hove. I was curious to see how Guy and his team would cope with such a large group as some other classes I have attended seemed to struggle with numbers barely into double figures. I would be observing this closely on the day, not that Guy at this time was aware of this. 24 ISSUE #4 AUGUST 2011
After the warm up the music was turned down to a moderate level and Guy and his team (Alexandra and Nick) began splitting the entire group up into three. Regular members were familiar with this process but newbies such as myself and a handful of others were less certain of what to expect. The process was quick and organised and once in our dedicated group we were told what we would be doing. I was in Guy’s group to start with and was paired up with another gentleman equally as enthusiastic as myself. We were give a strike shield (kick pad) between us and were verbally explained by Guy a series of leg kicks, press-ups and burpees that should be performed in sequence for a set amount of time before swapping over the strike shield and repeating. Guy’s watchful eye was highlighting areas to perfect and he provided some great motivation helping people push out those last few reps.
From Guy’s group we then all moved over to Alexandra’s for some kettlebell training. Here we were put through some drills including double and single handed kettlebell swings, clean and snatch, bicep curls, tricep extensions and squats. If you’ve been following the Brighton Active Facebook page then you’ll know that I am a huge fan of kettlebell training. What was great about the Boxercise Bootcamp class was that kettlebells were only one Next time though I must remember to bring a larger element of the session. This kept my body and my water bottle... muscles guessing, and at barely half way through the class I was already feeling the benefits. Boxercise Bootcamp classes take place all over Brighton and From Alexandra’s group we moved to the final group with Nick. Here we were each given a set of light free weights and following Nick’s guidance performed weighted lunges, squat jumps, lateral raises, punches and uppercuts. After being worn down by Guy and Alexandra’s previous groups Nick’s group was especially tough, as I’m sure everyone was thinking at the time. After this we were paired up once again with a set of boxing pads and gloves and put through some fantastic boxing combos including jabs, uppercuts, power punches and more. This really was sapping every last bit of energy I had but thanks once again to Guy and his team’s encouragement I was able to push myself further than I thought I could. Finally, we performed a ‘disorientation’ drill that completely finished everyone off (forward rolls into punches).
Hove including at the Ajex Centre, Cornerstone Community Centre and Hove Park. Boxercise Bootcamp will also be expanding soon into Burgess Hill and Haywards Heath with classes of up to a 100 people. For a full list of classes visit their website at www. boxercisebootcamp.co.uk. Boxercise Bootcamp also offer 1:1 training. For more information call 0845 467 0056 / 07725 485 696
“After training with groups of 100 or more in LA my ethos has always been big classes for BIG motivation! The comradery is excellent and no two classes are ever the same. Unlike other Boxercise companies we are also the only company in the UK to bring a fusion of workouts together i.e. Boxercise Kettlebells, Boxercise Kick, Boxercise Pump and Boxercise Core. Members can attend any class at any location so they never get bored or plateau” - Guy Sica
During the warm down at the very end of the class I tried to think of a point where the large numbers became a challenge to manage for Guy and his team - I couldn’t think of one! This truly was not just an exceptional display of providing a fun, challenging and extremely rewarding workout but was also a fine display of group management and motivation. www.brightonactive.com

FIRST IN LINE Spring into Summer with these fitness and nutritional tips courtesy of Fitness First Brighton Everyone feels better when the sun’s shining, but are you ready to ditch your coat for a cossie? After months of hiding under baggy layers thanks to our indecisive summer, the thought of slipping into a tiny piece of swimwear can be a daunting prospect. Don’t panic though! Leanne Taylor, health and fitness manager at Fitness First Brighton, is on hand with five top fitness and nutritional tips to help you prepare for summer.
about losing weight, but changing your shape. Rather than stepping on the scales each week, slip your swimsuit back on and admire your changing shape. That’s what will motivate you to carry on. After all, when you’re on the beach no-one will know what you weigh but everyone will see how you look. Tip 4 - Work out with a friend. You’re more likely to reach your goal if you share the journey with someone else. By getting a friend or family member to join you you’re both more likely to succeed. Alternatively, nothing will keep you as focused and motivated as one of our personal trainers.
Tip 1 - Hungry? Then have a drink. When you’re feeling peckish sometimes all your body needs is a drink. Instead of grabbing a snack between meals. Try drinking water regularly and you’ll find it keeps the hunger pangs at bay. Tip 5 - Sleep like a baby. Sleep might seem like a waste of time, Tip 2 - Take before and after but it’s actually an essential part of photos. Slip into your swimsuit life. BIKING BREAKAWAY There’s bike shops, and then there’s bike shops! We decided to look at the latter - Prestige Cycles in Hove Prestige Cycles on George Street, Hove opened in May 2011 and caters for entry level riders right up to pro-athletes. They are the sole importer of niche brands including Baum, Dekerf and Zerode, which cannot be found anywhere else in the UK and stock other selected cycle brands that only a handful of other UK based companies house. Prestige Cycles are also one of only three cycle stores in the UK to have a state-of-the-art, £10,000 Side Cycle fitting machine. We spoke to Prestige Cycles founder, and former pro-rider / international downhill race team manager, Steven Roche who talked us through the detailed process of coming in for a fitting to make sure that your ride is the best that it can possibly be: A full fitting takes around two hours. We start things off with a simple chat about your preferred riding style, your cycling strengths and goals, as well as any injuries or niggles that you may have. It’s also important we know what you’re keen to improve on as well. We ask you to bring your bike and cycling kit into the shop 28

Prestige Cycles bring you the Serotta fitting service for all your cycle fitting needs; whether you Race or just ride socially, Prestige Cycles can deal with all fitting requirements. and after learning more about yourself we then measure up your bike and your shoulder width. These measurements are then transferred over to our Side Cycle fitting machine. We also take your feet measurements, standing and weightless. One of the first things we often find is that people wear the wrong sized shoes as after cycling your feet actually swell up. The ideal sized shoe should be slightly larger than what you usually would wear to accommodate the swelling when cycling. Before we then actually put you on the Side Cycle we connect your bike up to our Turbo Trainer and put you through a 10-15 minute
warm up so that all your muscles are working and alert. After this we perform a basic flexibility test paying particular attention to your hamstrings and hip flexors. After compiling all this information together we then transfer you over to the state-of-the-art Side Cycle fitting machine for 30-45 minutes where we make sure we get you in your optimum body position where you will be most comfortable. Here we can adjust stem size and saddle position and also can also adjust the cranks from 170 all the way up to 175 in length. We also have a selection of bar widths from 38cm to 46cm to find exactly what works best for you.
The Side Cycle gives us power output on both legs with the idea being that both legs should transmit an equal amount of power. Quite often though people who have had injuries or niggles will find one leg is much more predominant than the other. In this case we’d happily recommend a sports specific physio who will be able to help them out. You can visit Prestige Cycles at 37A George Street, Hove, BN3 3YB. With the help of Freedom Leisure, a host of swimming and water activities are available for you to try your hand at across the whole of Brighton and Hove
THE PLUNGE
TAKING
According to the ASA (Amateur Swimming Association), three million people indulge in a water-based activity each week, but whether it’s for adventure, fitness or family fun, being a confident swimmer will help you get maximum enjoyment from your chosen pursuit. “Swimming is an important skill to have, particularly in a coastal town,” says Richard Bagwell, Group Sports Development Manager at Freedom Leisure. “The benefits are further reaching than just staying safe in the water and on the beach (drowning is the still third most common cause of accidental death in children). Living by the sea means there is a plethora of water sports available to us from kayaking to wake boarding and everything in-between.” Bagwell would like to see more people swimming in Brighton. “Unfortunately one in five children still leave school without the ability to swim,” he says. Research has shown that children who have taken baby swimming classes do better in gripping, reaching and balance tests than non swimming babies. “Brighton’s pools are ideally placed to offer tuition and opportunity through the whole age range,” says Bagwell. NHS Brighton & Hove and Brighton & Hove City Council in conjunction with Freedom Leisure have been offering unlimited free swimming for under 11’s since September 2010. “This is a great initiative to get more young people to start swimming with their friends and family, encouraging them to be active from a young age,” Bagwell says. Swimming is also a great form of exercise. According to the ASA even a gentle 30-minute swim can burn over 200 calories while a fast front crawl can burn as many calories as an 8mph run. “The benefits of swimming are both physical and mental and include enhanced muscular stamina, improved strength and flexibility, and stronger heart and lungs,” says Ryan O’Gorman, Fitness Manager at Freedom Leisure. “Swimming is the ideal remedy for easing aching muscles and for speeding recovery from injuries. It’s also an excellent way to relieve your mind from stress and tension.”

ISSUE #4 AUGUST 2011
If you’re bored of your usual water workout O’Gorman suggests shaking things up. “Exercise should never be boring,” he says, “if you swim regularly and are not enjoying it, try something new like an Aqua class, or start training for a swimming event or even a triathlon. If you need some extra motivation join a swimming club or sign up for Swimfit.” Swimfit is an ASA initiative run in association with British Gas and is designed to create a gym environment in the pool where swimmers are encouraged to follow a specific programme rather than just swimming lengths. “We have swim fit cards on poolside at King Alfred Leisure Centre, St Luke’s Swimming Pool and Prince Regent Swimming Complex that provide a structured and targeted workout,” says O’Gorman. “The cards, alongside scheduled Swimfit coaching sessions can help swimmers to get the most from their pool sessions with fresh ideas to motivate and challenge existing pool users, as well as providing a framework and support for new pool users looking to explore the benefits of swimming.” “In Brighton we are lucky to have so many water based activities available to us,” says Bagwell. “If you’re not a fan of swimming lengths, Brighton’s pools offer classes like Aquafit, Aqua circuits, Aqua natal and Parent & Baby Water Workout. There’s sessions for the over 50’s, ladies only, family swimming and mother and baby sessions and even where children can climb inside an inflatable ball and run on the water!” Swimming and water activities to try in Brighton: • Get more out of your swimming training by joining the Brighton Swimming Club which meets every Friday evening at the Prince Regent Leisure Centre. Training with a squad will help to improve your fitness and technique and give you the opportunity to compete in races and swimming galas.
• Take the kids to one of Brighton’s four outdoor paddling pools; Kings Road, The Level, Saunders Park or Hove Lagoon. The pools are open from late May to early September and are free of charge. • Sign up for British Gas Swimfit (www.swimfit.com) which is available at St Luke’s Swimming Pool, King Alfred Leisure Centre and Prince Regent Swimming Complex. Swimfit is an online programme that helps you get the most from every swim. The programme includes free online coaching tools, tailored swim training programmes and the opportunity to track your progress. • Try an Aqua class at St Luke’s, King Alfred or Prince Regent. Aqua classes are a great way to workout without impact, making it ideal for those looking for a gentle form of exercise or recovering from injury. • Try your hand at something new such as waterpolo or kayaking. For adventure seekers Brighton offers many adrenaline fuelled water sports including wakeboarding, surfing and kitesurfing. • Attend a family swim session at The Prince Regent (available 7 days a week) or fun with floats on Saturdays at The King Alfred Leisure Centre. To find out more about the activities on offer in Brighton’s Pools, including free swimming for under 11’s, visit www.freedom-leisure.co.uk www.brightonactive.com

HOME IMPROVEMENTS Exercising at home has never been so easy, and affordable, thanks to Fitness Shop in Brighton With the recession still in full swing, times are indeed tough for anyone looking to keep up with their monthly gym memberships. The solution is simple: home training. By training at home with the right equipment you’ll still be able to give yourself a full body workout that you can be proud of, and even if you’re lucky enough to maintain your current gym membership, a decent selection of home fitness equipment is perfect for times when getting out of the house proves troublesome .
(inflatable gym ball) which offer an endless supply of exercises you can perform on it, as well as being able to double as a platform for your dumbbell, or even your resistance band exercises.
We spoke to the people at Fitness Shop on Queens Road, Brighton who happily gave us some advice on what products you should have at arms reach in your home including dumbbells, resistance bands and a Swiss Ball:
For a great bit of CV (cardiovascular) exercise we would of course recommend you hit the streets or the park for a run, although given the indecisive weather that has graced us this summer it can be really off putting to pluck up the courage and get out the house. For these days a skipping rope can be your best friend with a calorie expenditure even greater than running.
A set of either fixed weights or an adjustable set of dumbbells would be a great place to start. We’d recommend dumbbells over barbells as they take up a lot less room and you are able to perform a greater selection of exercises with them. If weights aren’t your thing then a good set of resistance cables really are a must. They each come in various resistance levels that are colour coded for quick identification, and the list of exercises you can perform with them is extensive and extremely effective. As well as weights or resistance bands we’d highly recommend you get your hands on a Swiss Ball 32 ISSUE #4 AUGUST 2011
When buying a skip rope make sure you choose one that’s right for your height (the ones sold at Fitness Shop come with height guidance on the box) and be mindful to move any furniture out of the way before you get started.
So with a few wise purchases and perhaps the occasionally use of a personal trainer your fitness goals can be easily achieved at an affordable cost that won’t put a recession on your wallet.
There’s a few other great pieces of home fitness equipment we’d highly recommend if you really want to spice things up and offer a huge variation to your workouts. These include:
Please visit us at Fitness Shop, 123 Queens Road, Brighton (just up from the Clock Tower) and we will be more than happy to advise on both the fitness accessories you may need as well as advice on working out.
• A chin up bar: Fits in doorways and is used for pull ups (ideal for working the back and biceps) • A sit up bar: Fits under a door so you can secure your feet to perform sit ups (always remember to keep your knees slightly bent) Home training follows the exact same rules as any other kind of training, so be sure to vary your workouts every few weeks so that your body never gets too comfortable and adjusts to a set workout. Mixing things up can be as simple as changing the number of repetitions, the amount of weight, the rest between sets or the intensity performed. The one challenge you may find when incorporating a home training plan will undoubtedly be motivation and inspiration, but this can be easily avoided. Start by arranging the particular days you know you will be free to train (i.e. Monday, Wednesday and Thursday) and make sure you have a decent mix CD on hand to help you push yourself right until the end of your workout. You may even want to very occasionally make use of your own personal trainer who can offer guidance and create some exciting programs for you to follow. www.brightonactive.com

100%
100% PURE ADRENALINE Founder of The Adrenaline Store (TAS) and TAS Riding Crew Team, Mark Addison recently visited the Relentless NASS Extreme Sports Festival 2011. Here’s his report...
This was my first time to this amazing event and there was so much going on: Freestyle Motocross (FMX), BMX, Skate and Scooter comps and jams kicking off all over the event. BMX riders such as Mark Webb, the UK’s craziest BMX rider, was also in attendance and busting out some amazing and mind blowing tricks. There were 1000’s of people there and the atmosphere was fantastic. Everyone was having a great time and all the athletes really got behind each other when they were in their comps. You yourself could even ride the ramps if you had your bike or deck with you... There was also a huge blow up foam pit with a ramp so you could hit it on your BMX to try and master that
flip or whatever trick you’re trying to master. At 50p a go it’s well worth a pop.
We were there with our FMX rider Dave Wiggins and he was on it throwing out some great tricks and showing us how it’s done. He was riding with some of the other top UK FMX guys such as Danny Veal and John Patterson... these guys risk everything to put on a show covering over 75ft hanging off their bike and even sometimes upside down. You won’t believe your eyes some of the tricks these guys can do! I would say to anyone with an interest in action sports and music that this event is not to be missed. You can check out all the events coming up on our events section on our website, with links on there to save you money when buying your tickets. ACTIVE SUMMER It’s been an up and down summer weather wise so far, but that hasn’t stopped us from getting out and about and spreading the active word By the time you read this (either in August or September) we hope the great British weather would have made up its mind and have decided to let the sun our for more than 15 minutes at a time. There is after all so many sports and activities that Brighton and Hove have to offer, and it makes them all the better if the weather is on your side. That’s not to say though that the last couple of months have been disappointing. They haven’t. In fact with regards to exposure for this very magazine you hold in your hands, it’s been fantastic! If you didn’t know, we were at this year’s TAKEPART International Festival of Sport at Preston Park at the end of June, and at Paddle Round the Pier - Europe’s largest beach festival - in early July. Throughout the course of these events (just three days in total) we calculated that over 2,000 copies of Brighton Active were picked up!
We also were able to highlight more information on all the sports and activities that have featured within the magazine and set people off on a journey to take part in things themselves with all the relevant information they need. We won’t go as far as to say that we’ve changed people’s lives, but for those people who through us have managed to find an exciting new hobby or sport to keep them busy we can’t help but feel a bit chuffed. After all, keeping active and healthy has a host of rewards that have been well documented: a better figure, more energy and increased confidence to name but a few. A special thanks then must go out to all the teams involved in this year’s summer events. We were proud to be there and can’t wait until next year. If you’re reading this and have some catching up to do on our previous issues, fear not! You can read them all online for free at www.brightonactive.com

The modest £25 additional option of a tent awning allows for a further 2-4 people to sleep alongside. As someone who has extensively travelled Europe and Britain with and without a camper van, Matt has plenty of ideas on road trip itineraries and places to stay and visit if you need advice. Current year (inclusive of tax, insurance for two drivers, unlimited mileage) prices are £750 per week or £120 per day in the summer season, reducing to £600 per week and £95 daily in the autumn. Contact Active Kampers on 01273 203681, email enquiries@ activekampers.co.uk or visit www.activekampers.co.uk
As there is no limit on driving distances you can even take the vans across to France and Western Europe for a small insurance supplement of £5 per day per driver. The vans come equipped with roof bars, surf or kayak rack and a bike rack. Just add your own kayak, bike, surf or, snow board and make the most of our vans! The VW factory built the 2010 California as the ultimate compact camper van: stylish, economical and drives like a car. It is cleverly designed with lots of nifty storage space and clever hidden features that help give it the comfort of a bigger, more bulky van. It really is perfect for those narrow country lanes and small parking spaces in the UK. www.brightonactive.com

Eating right is a vitally important part of getting in shape but it’s something that most people don’t put into practice. Three sessions a week at the gym will definitely start helping you feel better but it’s your nutrition plan alongside this that will really step you up to the next level. This is why, in partnership with Plan P, we prescribe a Paleo Plan for all of our members and ten of them have just finished our first 30-day challenge. In the western world today we eat too many foods that our bodies have not evolved to process properly and that can cause many health issues. In simple terms a paleo nutrition plan involves eating plenty of meat, fish and vegetables, eggs, nuts and seeds, some fruits, little starch and no sugar. Following this alone will drastically improve your health and well-being but combined with CrossFit training you will get results

pureHEALTH, pureSPORT Matt Dickens founded pureHEALTH pureSPORT to help people improve their health, fitness and athletic performance. The business is divided in to two areas: pureHEALTH: Enjoy a Healthy Lifestyle! Fitness can be fun, interesting and allow you to enjoy a healthier way of life. Personal training is named as such for a reason; it’s all about you! In your sessions you’ll discover exactly what training methods you like and respond to best in order to make each session as enjoyable as possible. Combining metabolic circuits with functional exercises, whilst making important changes to your lifestyle and diet will ensure that you achieve the results you want! pureSPORT: Improve your performance! Matt specialises in sport specific
strength and conditioning to help you improve your performance on the pitch, track, in the ring or in the water. He has some great experience working with professional rugby players, sprinters, surfers, fighters and footballers and can offer you the same professional training. He is currently running the pre-season programme for Hove Rugby Football Club (Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7pm if you want to get involved). Injuries are also a problem with every sport and it’s clear to say that if you’re injured you can’t play. It’s all good being strong and filling a t-shirt but when you change direction at speed, make a tackle or stretch for that shot just out of reach you rely on much smaller muscles and ligaments around your joints that are often neglected in the gym. Knees, shoulders, ankles and backs can and should all be strengthened to reduce the risk of injury on the pitch!
If you’d like to improve your speed and agility, as well as fitness then head to SPRINT!! 6pm every Thursday at Hove RFC on the corner of Old Shoreham Road and The Drive. First session just £2 (normal price £4), bring football boots and water.
