Meeting Joe Strummer

Musical Theatre for Beginners Workshop

Pirates Of Penzance by Gilbert and Sullivan In 1879, Arthur Sullivan wrote about his new opera ‘I think it will be a great success, for it is exquisitely funny, and the music is strikingly tuneful and catching’. He was right. Pirates of Penzance was an immediate hit, and is still guaranteed to raise a smile, just like the Company of Friends who, after acclaimed productions of The King

and I, South Pacific, My Fair Lady, The Boy Friend and Oklahoma, return with a spectacular production of the comic operetta. The Saturday 2.30pm performance will be Audio Described.

1978. Nick and Steve see The Clash for the first time. It’s as if they take an oath to stay true to the values embodied in that day…

Hire – a Company of Friends (amateur) production

2002. Strummer’s death forces Nick and Steve to re-evaluate their lives.

Pre-Show Offer: Enjoy a special main course of the day and a 1/4 bottle of wine or bottle of lager for just £10. To reserve a table call 01293 438150

Charting the lad’s attempts to maintain their ‘oath’ to Strummer while living through Thatcherism, paying the bills and maintaining relationships, this passionate punk comedy is about attitude, friendship and celebrity – and a celebration of the man who set the agenda for a generation.

You have seen the musicals, now learn the moves… This workshop is open to anyone who loves jazz hands, big smiles and the world of musical theatre. All dance abilities welcome, please bring comfortable clothes to wear and dance shoes or trainers.

Ghost Stories

A Handful Of Henna

A Pleasing Terror

by Rani Moorthy

Award-winning performer Robert Lloyd Parry invites you to an atmospheric retelling of two tales by M R James - the master of the English ghost story.

Being dragged by her mother back to the family village thousands of miles away is no fun for 13-year-old Nasreen. In the monsoon rain, unable to text friends, and surrounded by wagging tongues of relatives, she is about to discover some unexpected truths.

In Canon Alberic’s Scrap-book, a young Cambridge antiquary discovers the devil in the details of an old book in a medieval French town. In The Mezzotint a ghoulish revenge is enacted within a work of art, before the helpless eyes of a museum curator.

Based on real stories from Muslim women, this is a joyous and moving story about the mystical power of henna and one girl’s journey to understanding her mother. From the writer of the international hit show Curry Tales which sold out on its visit to The Hawth. www.rasatheatre.co.uk

Suitable for ages 13 plus. Robert returns to the Studio with two further tales on Sat 27 March in A Warning To The Curious. www.nunkie.co.uk

1936

Fresh from Channel 4 and a sell out run at the Edinburgh Festival, ‘the funniest sketch troupe on the Fringe’ (The Scotsman) return to take the UK, and the record books, by storm. Join them for a full night of sketches and songs and a chance to see them attempt the impossible: 200 sketches. 60 minutes. 1 world record. Heroic attempt or spectacular folly? Suitable for ages 16 plus.

by Tom McNab A thrilling take on the run up to the 1936 Olympics, seen through the eyes of American journalist William Shirer. The stakes were high. Hitler craved power, the German Jews were under threat. America was uneasy, the Olympic Committee out of touch. It all rested on the few... and the athletes, among them Jesse Owens. A gripping piece of theatre with a nine actor cast, the play is followed by an excerpt from the Riefenstahl film Olympiad and a discussion led by Olympic coach Tom McNab. www.attictheatrecompany.com
