Deli-cious! Surrey is home to an astonishing variety of delicatessens, their number boosted by the numerous rural farm shops that now routinely offer a variety of gourmet food as tasty and fascinating as that available through the more urban-based delis. So wherever you live in the county you are never far from a mouth-watering choice of foodstuffs, many of them sourced from local producers in line with the current trend for “shopping local”. Much deli produce is also free-range or organic, or otherwise “natural”, again in line with the current focus on eating healthily. Sue Fenton reports

Cullenders, Redhill and Reigate Marc and Joelle Cullender were fed up of the daily commute to London after years spent in the capital working as an accountant and personal assistant respectively. Marc had also become disenchanted with counting other people’s money: ‘I wanted to count my own!’ he says. Starting their own business was the answer, and since both Marc and Joelle were interested in good food, opening a deli was their chosen solution. The location was a derelict corner shop in a residential area of Redhill, which was being renovated by a property developer contact. The couple decided it was their chance to start from scratch and create their ideal deli from the bottom up. Cullender’s opened last November, having been renovated in traditional corner-shop grocer style, with white wall tiles, a wooden floor and old-fashioned blinds. The stock includes milk from Leigh, free range eggs from Newdigate and bread from Ardingly, as well as an extensive cheese counter with cheese from around Europe. There are organic seasonal vegetables, pies, fresh baguettes, freshly baked pastries and cakes, olives, fresh soup, take-away coffee and everyday store cupboard essentials from pasta to tapenade. The shop can also prepare luxury gift, charcuterie and cheese hampers and does outside catering. The stock is always evolving, says Marc. ‘The list of what we could stock is virtually endless, so as we get asked for different items or discover new suppliers we try new things.’ With the shop sited on a residential street half a mile or so away from the town centre, about 80% of the clientele are locals. Most of the rest are Redhill office workers though

Left and above: Cullenders in Redhill, Marc and Joelle gave up careers in the City to become deli owners.

some come from further afield - ‘there’s one man who drives here from Wallington because it’s the only place he can get a particular type of cheese!’ says Marc. Despite having opened during a recession, Cullender’s is doing well. ’Even if they are cutting back on their weekly supermarket shop, I think people still like to treat themselves to something really nice to eat, and that’s what we offer.’ Such has been the success of the store that the couple have already taken a lease on a second branch, in Bell Street, Reigate, which will open soon. ‘Reigate doesn’t have a dedicated deli so I think it will be a good location,’ says Marc. Marc says that running a deli is hard work and long hours. ’There’s always something that needs doing and I work 12 hours a day six days a week.’ But he wouldn‘t trade it for his previous career. ‘I love doing this, and I don’t miss the commute one bit!

Taste Deli, Great Bookham Taste Deli is a delicatessen, coffee shop and caterer owned and operated by Suzanne Ailes and Alison Brown. Both Suzanne and Alison are seasoned caterers with more than 50 years’ catering experience between them. ‘We are passionate about providing the best locally sourced foods,’ says Suzanne. Shopping at Taste Deli is designed to be fun, she adds. ‘Our aim is to source local and seasonal produce wherever possible and complement this with quality and award-winning products.’ Both the women are trained chefs and make as much as possible in their on-site kitchen. In particular, they make their own quiches and cook their own meats, with rare roast beef being a speciality. There are around 30 cheeses, some local such as Norbury Blue and Sussex Charmer, plus pasta made fresh from durum wheat grown in Reigate. To complement the in house meats they stock Dorset Farm’s award winning hams that are cured without extra water or additional additives, then slowly cooked to maintain texture, body and quality. There is a wide range of freshly baked pies, pasties and sausage rolls, which are either made in-house or sourced specifically for their quality. Other items include healthy rapeseed oil, and traditional pickles and preserves made especially for Taste Deli. ‘We have spent a great deal of time sampling what’s available in the market and feel it is extremely important to be able to personally recommend all the products we sell,’ says Suzanne. Taste Deli will soon be introducing a new range of health products such as quinoa, cous cous, spelt, pulses, gluten free products, bread making flour.

food & drink

Above: A cheese wedding cake is among Priory Farm’s more unusual offerings.

The adjacent Taste Café offers hot specials, breakfasts, pastries, afternoon teas. There is also a choice of fine teas and coffees, with all the staff trained baristas. The company also does outside catering and supplies gift hampers.

Smith & Causey, Wrecclesham Smith and Causey is a family run coffee shop and farm shop based at the Farnham Pottery. The coffee shop is fast gaining a reputation for its great tasting coffee and its delicious homemade cakes. It serves breakfast, light lunches, coffee and cake or afternoon tea with freshly baked scones. In the farm shop, the company aims to stock good quality, locally sourced food and drink. It explains: ‘We make sure that wherever possible our products are sourced from producers or suppliers within 30 miles of Wrecclesham. You’d be surprised how much is produced in this area - from marmalade to mustard, cheese to chutney. With a wide range of fresh fruit and vegetables, bread, jam, wine and beer, you can buy your ‘everyday essentials’ or indulge in a few treats. We think what you eat and drink matters, and we believe in bringing producers and consumers closer together again - just as it always used to be.’ With this in mind the company has researched the best local producers to source all kinds of food including a range of English cheeses, local wines and juices, jams and sauces, homemade cakes and bakes.

Priory Farm Deli, South Nutfield The deli at Priory Farm Shop has a strong following, thanks, says manager Gerry McElhatton, to it being one of the best-stocked in the area and a great place to find specialities from artisan producers. Gerry says: ‘We go out of our way to source independent suppliers who are passionate about the quality and provenance of their food. Customers travel from far and wide because we stock products they won’t find in the supermarkets. We will also go out of our way to order in speciality items on request.’ The deli has a huge range of cheeses – around 60 at the last count – many produced locally, such as Norbury Blue from Mickleham and Ashdown Foresters which is made, as the name suggests, in Ashdown Forest. Staff are always happy to offer customers a taste of cheese. Delights such as stuffed pepperdew peppers and baby pumpkins, a wide range of olives and smoked fish and patés from Inverawe – Scotland’s finest smokehouse - make the deli a great source of inspiration, says Gerry. One of the more unusual items, and one which is growing

in popularity amongst cost-savvy brides, is whole cheeses tiered in the fashion of a traditional cake, for use as a wedding cake with a difference. It can, of course, double up as a cheese course.

11

Above: Taste stocks a range of locally-sourced food.

Crockford Bridge Farm Shop, Addlestone Crockford Bridge has a wide range of fresh fruit and vegetables all year round. All the crops grown on the farm are picked fresh each day, including asparagus and, from June, an array of soft fruit and berries. The shop has also sourced many local suppliers, enabling it to provide a wide range of specialist country produce and gourmet foods. These include homemade cakes, breads and pies, farmhouse cheeses, ice cream and dairy products, free range eggs, goose and duck, smoked produce, pâtés, pickles and preserves and a vast selection of unusual confectionery. Fresh fish is available on Fridays and Saturdays from the counter managed by fish supplier Phil Bowditch of Marlow. He offers more than 50 types of fresh fish, which is prepared at the point of sale and can be filleted for the customer. There is also a meat counter, operated by Maurice Jones & Sons of Weybridge. All meat supplied has been naturally fed and is fully traceable to the farms on which it was reared. The farm keeps many beehives and produces its own honey. A glass fronted working hive is in the shop and provides an interest for children and customers. There is also a selection of popular American groceries not available elsewhere, and a choice of gluten free, wheat free and diabetic goods.

Meejana, Weybridge This ‘boutique café’ aims to provide a little ‘corner of calm‘, offering organic Fairtrade coffee, more than 20 award-winning teas (many of which are also organic), a variety of home made cakes, Danish pastries and croissants, organic baguettes, sandwiches and a range of freshly pressed juices and natural smoothies with no artificial additives. There is outside seating, on a grassy area in front of the premises, and there is free wi-fi so customers can bring their laptops to the café. Products for sale include charcuterie, cheeses, pate, truffles, olive oil, fresh pasta, boutique wines, gourmet waters, chocolates, gifts, salads, patisserie and even jams from Lebanon. The business, which also runs a Lebanese restaurant, says its selection makes for the perfect epicure or great gifts for food lovers.

Bedroom Farce 1 October – 28 November Four couples, three bedrooms, two celebrations, one blazing row and an illicit kiss (or two). She has most recently been seen on stage in The World’s Biggest Diamond at the Royal Court and Festen at the Almeida. Jane Asher has performed in a number of Ayckbourn plays, most recently House and Garden at the National Theatre. Nicholas Le Prevost will play her husband Ernest. Nicholas recently worked with Peter Hall when he appeared in ETT’s Uncle Vanya, the production that opened the Rose Theatre in January 2008. Rachel Pickup and Tony Gardner play

Susannah and Nick respectively. They both return to the Rose after previous roles in Peter Hall’s productions at the theatre, Rachel in Love’s Labour’s Lost and Tony in Where There’s A Will earlier in 2009. The cast also includes Daniel Betts as Malcolm (Much Ado About Nothing, Crucible Sheffield), Lucy Briers as Jan (Ivanov, Donmar/ Wyndham’s Theatre), Orlando Seale as Trevor (The Lightning Play, Almeida) and Finty Williams as Kate (The Chiltern Hundred, Windsor, Chichester, West End and Gosford Park directed by Robert Altman). Peter Hall, internationally acclaimed director of theatre, opera and film, is the Rose’s Founding Director and led the campaign to open the theatre. One midsummer night she embarks on a turbulent affair with her father’s manservant, Jean, and finds herself caught in a desperate struggle. The cast is Rachel Pickup as Julie, Lucy Briers as Kristen and Daniel Betts as Jean. Stephen Unwin directed Rachel Pickup in King Lear for ETT in 2003 to great critical acclaim. Stephen Unwin became Artistic Director of the Rose in January 2008 and works alongside

Rachel Pickup in Miss Julie Director Emeritus Peter Hall. He most recently directed David Storey’s Home, a Theatre Royal Bath & Peter Hall Company production and the Rose Theatre’s production of The Winslow Boy, which has just completed a national tour. Stephen Unwin founded English Touring Theatre and was its Artistic Director from 1993 to 2008, during which time he directed almost thirty productions of new and classical work for the company both on tour and in the West End.

This autumn, the Rose Theatre presents Behind Closed Doors, a season of work exploring private lives on the public stage. This season includes two main house productions played in repertory; Alan Ayckbourn’s Bedroom Farce directed by Peter Hall and Miss Julie by August Strindberg, in an English translation by Kenneth McLeish, directed by Stephen Unwin.

Best known for writing Miss Julie in 1888, Swedish novelist and playwright August Strindberg was born in 1849 and died in 1912. During his lifetime he wrote 58 plays and has arguably become one of the world’s most influential Scandinavian authors of all time.

The nation’s favourite impressionist, Alistair McGowan (‘The Big Impression’), is set to embark on his first, solo, stand-up tour in ten years. Alistair will take to the road (and the rails) this autumn with a brand new, one-man show resurrecting his legendary celebrity impressions and introducing audiences to a host of new never-before-heard voices along the way - nobody does it better!

Jimmy Carr - Rapier Wit Dorking Halls Wednesday 16 December, 8pm, £22.50

A heady mix of artistic integrity, loyalty and avarice has put Jimmy back on the road. If you only see one comedy show this year - what’s the matter with you? Get out more. A ‘rapier’ is the long sword of a gentleman. ‘Rapier wit’ is defined as clever, quick, intelligent humour. Please note, Jimmy Carr doesn’t have ‘the long sword of a gentleman’ and even if you like him, ‘clever, quick and intelligent’ is a bit of a stretch.

Exhibitions Altering her palette consciously, Jenny has created works which are not only influenced by her personal sketchbooks and visual memory, but by contemporary artists such as painters Peter Doig and Michael Porter and indeed by art historical influences such as Gustav Klimt and Paul Cezanne. As she works towards a major exhibition and retrospective in 2010, split between the New Walk Museum and the Richard Attenborough Centre in Leicester, it is certain that this current body of work and its quality of line are assured and confident as the artist bounds towards the zenith of her nearly forty year career.

Footprints and the Artizan printmakers GalleryOne, Grayshott Until 19 December 2009

GalleryOne in Grayshott is working in collaboration with Artizan Editions to host the ‘Fingerprints’ exhibition. This exhibition features silkscreen prints by a selection of notable artists including John Marshall, Stella Maris, Richard Walker, Henrik Simonsen and Katty McMurray. All works are hand printed directly by the artists, in editions that are under 100 and are selected to demonstrate the richness and diversity of this medium. Included in this exhibition are a limited number of self published works by Bridget Riley and Gerald Laing, by kind permission. The exhibition opens on Tuesday 10th November and runs until Christmas.

Guildford Art Society 77th Annual Exhibition Guildford House Gallery Saturday 17 October – 14 November

The Art Society’s Annual Exhibition will be hung in the gallery’s original panelled rooms - a world away from computer games, blogs, twitters, emails, mobile-jangles, texting, and scrolling web pages. Visitors can take a long refreshing dip into the world of those who have found time ‘to stand and stare!’ and absorb - something modern life is forgetting. As always, the exhibition brings together well known Guildford Art Society members along with new first time exhibitors. On display will be coloured glass sculptures and bowls by Jenefer Ham composed from poetic observations of nature. A regular favourite is animalier Carol Orwin - whose sculptures of animals sculpted in polymer resins and bronze metal fillers reveal the skeletal strength and muscled contours of the creatures and the power and beauty of their natural lines. Liz SewardRelfe opens the eye to the magic of colour, light and shapes in her still-life paintings of mixed media. Roger Dellar observes the pattern groups of people create, the shapes between them lighting vivid contrasts in his canvas of powerful colours. Abstract artist Michael Woods takes rhythmic forms from the countryside evolving them into balanced colourscapes.

Flower paintings bring exquisite observations of botanical growth, and Nola Armstrong explores contemporary colour-patterns created from her flowers, fabrics and pots. These and all the exhibiting artists have intensified their time ‘to stand and stare’ to bring the reality of close observation - and more to the exhibition. Artists come to exhibit their work from as far as Woking, Farnham, Dorking and Hindhead and have faced an independent selection committee to be included in the show. Members of the Society who have achieved outside success this year include Roger Dellar, already an R.I. and P.S. has been elected a member of ‘The Royal Institute of Oil Painters’ this year. John Bryce’s paintings and etchings have been on show at the Head Office of Baker Tilly in London. Carol Orwin, Allison Graham, Peter Howitt and Judy Coleman were among the local artists selected to exhibit at the Yvonne Arnaud Art Exhibition this year. Nola Armstrong shows with the Society of Floral Painters. A few successful members show their work at the Mall Galleries. Roger Dellar and John Bryce have both had work in The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in London over recent years. www.guildfordhouse.co.uk

‘Out of the Woods’ Paintings by Jenny Grevatte & Ceramics by John Wright New Ashgate Gallery Saturday 10th October – Saturday 7 November

Now in her fifth solo exhibition with the New Ashgate Gallery, Jenny Grevatte returns invigorated and replenished by inspiration and interpretation as a result of a self-imposed two year hiatus from exhibiting. Trees and ancient woodland have been major sources of inspiration, as well as contemporary painting, through her current residency at the New Walk Museum in Leicester. Always mindful of her formative academic training with Eric Hall, and possibly considering the creative influence of husband John Wright, Jenny’s mixed media approach of collage, glazing and layering oil media

John Wright makes great use of textural clays, combining them with very individual glazes which are inspired by aspects of nature such as pebbles, volcanic rocks, the sea, lichen and bark. These glazes, in striations and splatters have been inspired by geological formations witnessed on a recent trip to New Zealand. He is based in both Cornwall and Leicestershire and fi nds endless inspiration in their contrasting landscapes. In Cornwall he is drawn to the intense blue of the Atlantic, the granite, weather beaten standing stones and cairns, the ebb and fl ow of the estuary tides. In Leicester- shire it is the organic textures of ancient oaks and the sunlight and shadows in the woodlands of Charnwood forest that inspire him.

Guildford Photographic Exhibition 21 November – 2 January 2010

Guildford House Gallery welcomes back Guildford Photographic Society in November after a four year absence, with new members and a whole range of different photographs. Guildford Photographic Society is believed to have been originally founded in 1892, with the objective of “advancing the art and craft of amateur photography”. The GPS was reformed in 1947 by a group of dedicated Guildford photographers, who laid the foundations of today’s successful Society. The objective is still the case even though the equipment used today has advanced beyond the wildest dreams of those early photographers.

Chalk Hill showcases contemporary craft For the first time, Annabel Agace will showcase the work of contemporary designer makers at her gallery, Chalk Hill Contemporary Art. The Winter Exhibition (6 – 15 November) will bring together a carefully selected group of established and emerging artists and designer makers at Chalk Hill, the modernist gallery space incorporated within a magnificent family home in Guildford, Surrey.

n showing contemporary craft at Chalk Hill – itself an iconic example of 21st Century building design by awardwinning Surrey architect Elspeth Beard - Annabel will look to revive Surrey’s illustrious Arts & Crafts heritage.

36

Annabel Agace says, “Edwin Lutyens, Gertrude Jekyll and Mary Watts, three of the most celebrated names associated with the movement, all found inspiration in Surrey. Continuing the tradition, Bloomsbury artist and critic, Roger Fry, chose Guildford for his family home, Durbins (described by Pesvener as ‘one of the landmarks in the evolution of an independent contemporary style in English architecture)’, which is situated on the same road as Chalk Hill. I am now delighted to be bringing the story ‘up-to-date’; amongst other leading designers and artists showing at the Winter Exhibition will be Cressida Bell, granddaughter of Roger Fry’s close friend, Vanessa Bell. Cressida’s distinctive textiles and prints draw inspiration from Bloomsbury and will, I hope, reignite interest in the area’s artistic heritage.” Visitors will also have the chance to view and buy work by: Ana Aceves, Nick Bodimeade, Nora Boland, Amelia Coward, Lars Gregersen, Tom Hammick, Shelley James, Helen Minns, Sue Paraskeva, Tim Plunkett, Mike Savage and Giulia Zaniol. Annabel continues, “Here in the UK we are incredibly fortunate to have such a successful track record in producing exemplary craftspeople and designers. The Arts & Crafts Movement was, in part, a reaction against the trend towards mass production, and I believe that we are currently witnessing a similar revolt, confirmed by growing visitor numbers and sales at events such as the Craft Council’s Collect and Origin.

I wholeheartedly endorse CultureLabel founder, Peter Tullin’s, opinion that consumers are increasingly seeking ‘products with soul’, a contemporary translation of the original Movement’s stipulation that design must provide “both maker and user with pleasure.” The Chalk Hill Winter show will look to contribute to this welcome surge in interest and I would strongly encourage those who have not already done so to come and seek out some of the original and stunning items being produced by talented people around us. I have scoured artist studios around the South East to bring you a few of the best. This will be a perfect opportunity to find some really special Christmas presents with prices starting from just a few pounds.”
