Welcome to the second issue of the Surrey Guide. We’ve had such good feedback from our inaugural issue in the spring that we’ve made this summer edition bigger and we’ve included some more in-depth informative new features alongside the listings. What hasn’t changed is our aim to make this the most thorough and comprehensive listings guide to the numerous events the county has to offer. Once more we bring you everything from comedy nights to kids’ holiday schemes, from National Trust walks to performances of Shakespeare. The Surrey Guide will be published every quarter and is available through a wide variety of shops and businesses across the county. If you have an event or activity you’d like to promote for free in our listings, please get in touch. We’d also like to hear from you if you’d like to stock copies of the guide in your premises. Have a wonderful summer exploring all our county’s great activities!

National Theatre comes to Farnham Maltings

26

Farnham Maltings is delighted to be working with the National Theatre on its new project - NT Live – an exciting new initiative to broadcast live performances of National Theatre plays onto cinema screens worldwide. The pilot season will launch with Phèdre with Helen Mirren, Margaret Tyzack and Dominic Cooper on 25 June 2009. Nick Starr, Executive Director at the National Theatre, commented: ‘I grew up in suburban Kent and was painfully aware how little theatre was available locally. Travelling up to London wasn’t always an option so I am particularly pleased that we have been able to make this happen with Farnham Maltings.’ One feature of this new programme – the Maltings hopes to be showing eight productions a year – will be pre show interviews with the director, key actors and coverage of back stage. Another is the cost of a ticket, which is being kept deliberately affordable. Tickets for Phèdre go on sale in April at £10, £9 for Maltings members. ‘This is something of a coup for us. The National wants to reach new audiences and make the most of their extraordinary artists. We want to find new partners and ways of working. Digital technology doesn’t replace the live experience but it is a reality and we need to embrace its possibilities or risk being left behind,’ commented Gavin Stride for the Maltings. The Maltings is now busy raising the funds so that it can purchase rather than hire the digital equipment and satellite that makes this possible. The ambition is to extend the programme to include other companies and events. Already negotiations are happening with the Metropolitan Opera in New York to show their work with more to follow. See www.nationaltheatre.org.uk/ntlive for more information. For tickets, please contact Farnham Maltings Box Office on 01252 745444 or visit www.farnhammaltings.com

The Surrey Guide Summer 2009

Mowgli is found as a tiny baby crawling through the jungle by a family of wolves and adopted as one of the pack. It soon becomes clear that although the ‘little frog’ has less fur than the wolf, less speed than the panther and less agility than the monkey his courage and wit mark him out as the future King of the Jungle. Kipling’s classic is thoughtful, funny and very exciting.

The trouble is, with so many philandering, barren or damn right ugly women out there it’s hard too keep your mind focused on monogamy. Besides, with so many single women desperate to be the future Mrs Tudor (with the small incentive of Queen of England), you can change your mind as often as your stockings. Of course, being sole ruler of the country also has its advantages when it comes to ‘getting rid’ of the current wife…with a swift chop of the axe.

Petersham Nurseries owned by Gael & Francesco Boglione is set at the foot of their home, Petersham House, at the base of Richmond Hill. In order to save this local nursery from the clutches of the circling developers and multinational garden centres, the Bogliones bought the run-down business and in doing so reunited the original Petersham House estate, separated for over 30 years. After extensive restoration work was undertaken in 2004, it re-opened to the public transformed; a magically,

etersham Nurseries’ stylish displays of plants grown by these serious horticulturists are complemented by garden antiques, original artefacts (picked up in France, Italy and especially India) and a delightfully quirky, café-restaurant.

At the café lunch is eaten amongst the flowers and plants, at the antique tables dotted around the enchanting main greenhouse and outside under fragrant Indian tatti shades, around a reclaimed stone fountain. Head chef Skye Gyngell works almost exclusively with seasonal produce, creating simple food inspired by what she sees growing and flowering around her. The relatively short menu changes every week and consists of an average of five starters and five main course dishes plus cakes, ice creams & desserts. In season, she picks herbs, salads and fruit from the walled kitchen garden of Petersham House and uses as much local produce as she can lay her hands on.

Mossiman. Before setting up the Petersham Nurseries Café, Skye had been hidden from public view whilst working with a rota of high profile private clients. Skye is currently food writer for both Vogue (UK) and The Independent on Sunday Review. In her quest for the best quality seasonal produce Skye is assisted by her resident forager, Wendy Fogarty. Their sourcing policy is simple - to use the highest quality seasonal ingredients, in support of small farmers and producers from the British Isles and further afield – products that capture the flavours of the people and places from which they originate. If the nursery itself wasn’t photogenic enough, it is set in the centre of an Arcadia that was created along side the Thames in the 18th century, inspiring poets, writers, composers and artists such as J.M Turner and Sir Joshua Reynolds.

Summer dishes include Cremini Tomatoes, Peaches & Parma Ham (£12.00) and Guinea Fowl with Coure di Bue, Deep Fried Sage & Anchovy Butter (£22.50). The café is licensed and offers an extremely concise wine list. The rose bellini is an especially popular aperitif.

Petersham Nurseries is open seven days a week. Plants, gifts and antiques.Lunch is served Tuesday - Sunday from 12.30 pm to 3 pm. Reservations are essential. Tea & cakes & home-made soup are served every day in the Tea House, please see website for details. Reservations number 020 8605 3627.

The best beer in Kingston Beer and good cheer will be the order of the weekend at Kingston’s Workmen Club and Institute in June as the venue plays host to the town’s 10th annual beer festival. Hardened beer lovers and newcomers to all things ale are welcome to the event from Friday June 26 to June 27 and all will have the chance to sup samples from a range of more than 45 different cask beers, ciders and perries. But as Clive Taylor of the Kingston and Leatherhead branch of CAMRA – the Campaign for Real Ale – explained, visitors should arrive early if they want to make sure they do not leave thirsty. ‘It’s definitely getting more popular; in the last couple of years we’ve completely run out of beer by about seven or eight on the Saturday and that’s from more than 45 barrels,’ he said.

42

The festival will boast barrels from some of the county’s best beer producers, including the Hog’s Back and Surrey Hills breweries, and tipples from further afield. Traditionally seen as the domain of hirsute gentleman of a certain age, the real ale movement has gathered momentum in recent years attracting a younger, more diverse following. While overall demand for beer in the UK has slid in response to the recession, ale sales are still holding their own. Taylor said all are welcome to take a stroll around CAMRA’s virtual ale trail throughout the event, sampling the range of brews on offer, from dark porters to hop-packed pale ales. He added: ‘It’s great to see more youngsters getting interested in it. A lot of the CAMRA membership has seen better days but there are younger people joining now. A lot of the local pubs are running their own beer festivals because it is getting so much more popular.’ The first session of the festival kicks off at 11am on Friday June 26 and ends at 3pm. Admission is free for the first period and costs £3 on the Friday evening, when the bars will be open from 5.30pm to 11pm. Saturday’s drinking starts at 11am and goes on until the ale runs out, or 9pm. Admission on Saturday is £2. CAMRA members get a £1 discount. Commemorative, returnable glasses are available for a deposit, and a range of merchandise and hot and cold food will be on sale. Log on to www.camrasurrey.org.uk for more details. The workmen’s club can be found at Old London Road, Kingston, and is a short saunter from the town’s rail and bus stations. Probably best to leave the car at home, then.

Deckchair

Dreams Anyone who happened to be strolling through Hyde Park, Green Park, St James’s Park, Regent’s Park or Finsbury Square last summer will remember seeing an eye-catching array of brightly-coloured deckchairs - you might even have sat in one!

The Surrey Guide Summer 2009

inside out

T

he deckchairs - 700 of them across the five venues - were part of a high-profile charity initiative, Deckchair Dreams, which aimed to raise funds to protect and enhance the capital’s eight Royal Parks. The different designs were based on original designs by 23 artists and celebrities, including Tracey Emin, Joanna Lumley, Matthew Williamson, Keith Tyson and Raymond Briggs - and designs by local schools and the Household Cavalry. Their original artwork was auctioned, with money raised going to the Royal Parks Foundation’s nature and wildlife conservation projects in its 5,000 acres of parkland.

Eyes Wide Digital is a photographic services company based in Redhill. It has worked on the Deckchair Dreams project for three years, printing thousands of deckchairs with designs by celebrities. It can produce any number of deckchairs from a one-off to thousands. The frames are made from a hard-wearing and sustainable wood called merpauh, which is treated with teak oil to protect it and to enhance its appearance. The canvas is a hard wearing polyester and cotton mixture, printed using state-of-the-art technology. The deckchairs come in two sizes: a single seater and a ‘wide boy’ two-seater. One of the customers of the product was The Guardian newspaper, which ordered some to use at the Hay-on-Wye literature festival. The beauty of the concept, says Eyes Wide, is that it means artwork and photography can be used outside. It’s not just the chairs and seats that can be adorned with digital prints but also walls and fences and windbreakers. The deckchairs are just part of a wider range of photographyrelated products. Eyes Wide can reproduce customers’ own photos and artworks onto all sorts of items (such as tennis seats, beanbags, T-shirts, cushions, mugs, roller blinds, banners, panels and boards). The company can create canvas artwork from ultrasound baby scans and pop art canvases from customers’ original photography. It has produced canvases and prints from artworks of The Beatles for a Beatlesthemed hotel in Liverpool. It also reproduced old masters for two major London art galleries. Other customers include theatres, wedding fairs, schools, offices, hotels, restaurants, pubs and event organisers.

45

Limited edition versions of the chairs were also sold to the public, at the price of £86. What is perhaps not so widely known is that the company that made the deckchairs, transferring the original artwork into digital form for printing onto canvas, is based right here in Surrey.

The Great Gardening Show Whilst an Englishman’s home may be his castle, it would be fair to say that his garden ranges from anything between his refuge to his complete obsession! No further proof is needed than the continued popularity of gardening shows held across the country which, despite the persistent inclemency of recent summers and doom and gloom economic forecasts, continue to thrive _ none less than Guildford’s own largest event in this sector, The Great Gardening Show held at Loseley House from 17-19 July 2009.

The Surrey Guide Summer 2009

F

inside out

or 14 years this event has held a special place in the calendar combining aspects you’d expect at one of the larger national shows including a programme of talks and demonstrations, and specially created show gardens, with the relaxed and friendly feel of a smaller community event. The Great Gardening Show has also gained a reputation for ‘getting it right’ when it comes to the mix of stands and quality of products on display, striving to maintain a focus on plants grown in this county by specialist nurseries, whilst also recognising the need for stands selling food, art and other such items which round out the visitor experience.

‘We tend to look at the spring show, which only has 40-50 stands, as a litmus test for the season. This coupled with the unprecedented level of presales seems to indicate a busy Great Gardening Show in 2009’ visitors on each day than we did for the same show in 2008, and everyone was leaving the Walled Garden laden with plants and other products’ he says generally sets a trend for July’s big event. ‘We tend to look at the spring show, which only has 40-50 stands, as a litmus test for the season. This coupled with the unprecedented level of presales seems to indicate a busy Great Gardening Show in 2009,’ he continues. All of which may be a reflection on the earliest stages of the show’s recent development. ‘Last year we started on a five year plan of reinvestment in the show with the aim of offering greater choice and better prices for exhibitor and visitor alike, starting with our all new show ground, which solves some historic access problems and comes with a financial benefit that allows us to offer heavily discounted tickets via our web site and the wherewithal to promote the event more heavily. Last year was the first year we ever advertised on local radio and national press, and this year we have even more plans to promote the show. Our overall aim is to increase the number of visitors and make the most of the extra space we now have to accommodate an even wider choice of stands,’ Andrew explains.

Great Gardening Show is on track to maintain its position. ‘This year it has been more difficult to attract exhibitors, and the tendency has been to book as late as possible, that said, certain facilities are already close to full, and we have a full compliment of show gardens. Event organiser Andrew Lopez-Calvete says that events already held this year give a strong indication of the year ahead. ‘Our early season show - The Spring Gardening Weekend, which is also held at Loseley House in the Walled Gardens, was one of the most successful in recent years. Neglected sash windows are safety and security hazards Sash windows were built to last for hundreds of years, according to sash expert Dermot Cooke, founder of Sliding Sash Solutions. But he issues a stark warning: ‘A neglected window may be a safety and security hazard. And householders are throwing away money if they allow heat to escape through poorly fitting frames.’ Here Dermot reveals his ‘tell-at-a-glance’ guide to help identify potential problems. If you find any, don’t despair - most can be remedied quickly and simply. ‘Safety and security issues are naturally the most urgent,” says Dermot. “But all the problems need dealing with swiftly. By acting now, you could save the expense of completely rebuilding your traditional window.’

Sash Window Health and Safety Check

Are you at risk from intruders? Burglars love sash windows with inadequate (or no) locks because they are so easy to break into. Reduce your risks by investing in modern, keyoperated locks. Dermot recommends the restrictor type that prevents the windows from opening more than a few inches. These help keep intruders out – and guard against children falling through open windows. And such improved security could bring an added bonus when you come to renew your household insurance. Are your windows a safety hazard? If you can’t open them, you could find yourself trapped if there’s a fire. Make sure your sashes are running smoothly so the bottom window can be opened swiftly in case of emergency. But if you have young children, ensure you have a restrictor lock fitted (see above) so that the window can only open a little – enough to enjoy the circulation of air but not enough for young children to climb or fall through.

Is the glass weak and liable to break? Small cracks around the corner of the pane are acceptable, says Dermot, but check for large ones which are dangerous because they weaken the glass. If in doubt, consult an expert. Is the bottom window frame coming apart? If so, water may be settling between the joints, leading to wet rot. Has the external paint started to crack or deteriorate? Dermot advises repainting every five to eight years to prevent wet rot attacking bare timber. Is the putty missing or coming away from the glass? This may cause your windows to leak, which can lead to wet rot. Do your windows rattle in the wind? If so, they will be letting in draughts and causing heat loss. A sash window specialist will be able to remedy this problem and some systems – such as a brush pile which is hidden inside the beading - can really improve efficiency without changing the appearance of the window. Some can be installed without the need for Listed Building consent. Dermot is devoted to saving the nation’s sashes and urges householders to think twice before they rip them out. ‘Each one is an antique,’ he says, ‘And with 21st century renovation systems they can be amazingly efficient.’ Dermot Cooke is founder of Sliding Sash Solutions, the specialist sash window business. www.SlidingSashSolutions.co.uk

Repairing, servicing and improving traditional sash windows Are your windows draughty? Difficult to open and close? In need of repair? Do they let in unacceptable noise levels? Do they rattle in the wind? Are they fitted with adequate locks and fittings? Do not replace your sash windows. The Sliding Sash Solutions system for overhauling traditional sash windows is an effective way to eliminate all these problems without changing the appearance of your original windows. Our specialist renovation and repair service for sliding sash windows includes any timber repairs, replacement of rotten sills and re-glazing of damaged panes along with the installation of our unique Solutions Brush Pile System™.

Guildford House Celebrates its 350th Anniversary 27 June to 8 August 2009

The exhibition will explore the history of the building, its various uses, and the Guildford Borough Art Collection, and there will be a programme of talks and events throughout the exhibition. The Garden Room and the Landing will focus on Guildford House in Art; including favourite paintings such as Margaret Spencer’s Back of 155 High Street, as well as rarely exhibited works such as the Harwood Even painting of Old Guildford House. This part of the exhibition will include interior scenes, and old photographs of the building showing its previous uses. The Powell Room Gallery will look at the contribution made to the Guildford Borough Art Collection by the Friends of Guildford House, who have supported and funded purchases over the years such as the recently acquired Judge Garrow with two children by John Russell R.A. (1745-1806) and Ernest Arthur Rowe’s (1863-1922) The Gardens at Tangley Manor. The Pine Room will explore the Guildford Borough Collection. The displays will include work by the early 20th century artist Helmut Krommer that include the Farnham Road cottages and the unfinished Guildford Cathedral. Also work by Henry James Sage will be on display showing the popular views of bygone Guildford. In addition

there will be work in a variety of media including paper, oil paintings, ceramics, glass and textiles. The Study Room will give a rare glimpse of when Guildford House was Nuthalls Restaurant, between 1929 and 1956. There will be images, reproduction menus and other memorabilia relating to the history of the house during this period. With such a wide variety of exhibits, the exhibition has a wide appeal for art lovers, architecture buffs and general browsers alike. T

he 10th Surrey Artists Open Studios event lasts from 6 to 21 June 2009. In all there are 385 artists involved who will open their studio doors to the public.

Some studios will be open across Surrey for the whole two weeks and all of them will be open on the weekend of 13 June. During this anniversary year of the event, there will also be the opportunity to vote for your favourite artist in the Baines Surrey Artist of the Year Competition held in association with The New Ashgate Gallery in Farnham. The competition is sponsored by the Baines-Davis Charitable Trust in memory of its founder Patricia Baines. Patricia Baines, who lived in Farnham for a number of years, was a professional oboist and was an early supporter of the New Ashgate Gallery. The most popular artists from the vote will take part in an exhibition at the New Ashgate Gallery from 12 September to 3 October. The public will then be asked to vote again for their overall favourite. A panel of selected expert judges will vote alongside the public and the first Surrey Artist of the Year will be chosen. The winning artist will receive a £2000 prize and a solo exhibition at the New Ashgate Gallery in May next year to make the launch of the next Open Studios season. The competition will be our audience’s chance to show their appreciation for the artists involved in this open studios event and for some of our artists to have the opportunity to take part in a public showcase at a prestigious gallery.

‘I feel very much a part of the lives of the artists involved in the Surrey Open Studios events. ‘I want to deliver the best project that I can so that the artists participating will take pride in the event and call it their own. I love to meet and chat with artists about their work and future projects and ideas. ‘It gives me a real buzz to get good feedback which inspires me to do all I can for the event. I hope one day it will become bigger than that in Brighton!’ Caroline Jackman, organiser of the event

Hidden Treasures from the Mary Rose is a spectacular Exhibition – a major project in celebration of the 500th anniversary of Henry VIII’s accession to the throne.

T

he Mary Rose, Henry VIII’s flagship, sank in 1545 at the Battle of the Solent. Raised in 1982, her collection is a unique time capsule and one of the world’s most precious heritage icons. The artefacts found on board illustrate the daily life of officers and sailors, and the military equipment of the ship. Hidden Treasures from the Mary Rose shows 250 of the finest Tudor artefacts, most of which have never been seen before: clothing, jewellery, personal possessions, money, domestic utensils, furniture, musical instruments, medical equipment, navigational apparatus, weapons of warfare, tools, rigging and wood from the ship. Many items are in ‘mint’ condition, some you can even touch.

‘The Mary Rose is one of the most important objects in English History. It’s up there with the Domesday Book, the Magna Carta... indeed, I would go further. The Mary Rose is the English Pompeii or Herculaneum; all Tudor life is there.’

The history of the ship is brought to life through these prize objects complemented by state-of-the-art multimedia displays. Hidden Treasures from the Mary Rose also shows the findings of exciting new research about the ship and its crew. These include accurate facial reconstructions of a Gunner and a Bosun, created for the exhibition through advanced techniques of biomedical and archaeological research. A leading forensic artist and his team have rebuilt these heads, using scientific evidence, and accurate measurements of skin depth. They made plaster casts of the skulls, onto which they built up the faces, adding a thin layer of ‘fat’, and a skinlike substance. Hair has been inserted; and acrylic eyes have been prepared at a specialist NHS eye unit. The precious skeleton of the ship’s dog has been put together specially for the show. The dog, probably the only animal on the ship, was trapped in a doorway at the time of the disaster. She may have been a pet, or a mascot, or was perhaps brought on board to help reduce the population of rats! The exhibition has been organised by the famous Whitgift School, and is in state-of-the-art galleries in the school’s conference centre. Hidden Treasures from the Mary Rose has been made possible through a partnership between the Mary Rose Trust, Whitgift School, The Whitgift Foundation and Croydon Council. Preview / DA VINCI INVENTIONS

Da Vinci Inventions: Leonardo and his Machines, is coming to the UK for the first time this summer and will be showing at the awardwinning gallery, The Lightbox, from August to November. This is the public’s chance to see some of the world’s most significant inventions from arguably the greatest genius of all time.

his exhibition will explore in detail Leonardo Da Vinci’s relationship with technology. It will consist of between 40-50 full scale, half scale and smaller interactive models of machines for flight, engineering and motion designed by Leonardo. The models have been created over a 10 year period by a team of Italian artisans working in Rome, who have collaborated with historians and academics to construct the machines based on a close study of Leonardo’s notebooks and drawings utilising only materials and techniques known in Renaissance Italy. Visitors will be able to compare the models of the machines with enlarged details of Leonardo’s drawings. The Lightbox has also secured the loan of one of original notebooks, known as a codex or codices, from the Victoria and Albert Museum. These are rarely seen on display in the UK and will be housed in its own gallery with an exhibition charting the life and career of the Italian master. This exhibition will have a broad appeal across the whole of London and the South East, with anticipated visitor numbers in excess of 15,000. The Lightbox will also be staging a series of events, lectures, schools programmes, music and films to support the exhibition. The Inventions Leonardo left few precious gems behind for the world to marvel at. Many of his original works are even considered too fragile to be displayed for public enjoyment. However, thanks to the collaboration of Grande Exhibitions and The Anthropos Association, The Lightbox is proud to present a collection of inventions recreated from Leonardo’s codices. The Anthropos Association (made of artisans and scientists) studied Leonardo’s notebooks, his drawings and his writings to recreate these objects of wonder. Some of the challenges they faced included having to understand Florentine dialect, the interpretation and analysis of his drawings and reading mirrored writing to decipher his notes. Leonardo also deliberately left mistakes in his drawings and information to mislead!

• Flying Machine – a dynamic device that uses all the parts of the body for the propulsion of the device • Tank – an example of Leonardo’s extraordinary genius as a military engineer. The Life of Leonardo Visitors will be able to learn about the life of Leonardo through full colour panels arranged chronologically around the gallery. They will tell of his illegitimate birth, the secret identity of his mother, his apprenticeship at Verrochio’s workshop at the age of 16 and how he rose to become Architect and General Engineer - a key position in the ambitions of Cesare Borgia in 1502. To embrace the feel of Renaissance Italy, there will be a Renaissance tent at one end of the gallery which will house Leonardo’s original works. An Italian garden will also be simulated in the courtyard beside the canal and a small cinema will show a film on his life. This exhibition will be accompanied by an exciting events and workshop programme. Workshops Children, families and adults can enjoy hands-on fun in our programme of workshops. Created around the themes of engineering and art, participants will be able to build model gliders, flying machines and explore building structures with focus on Leonardo’s Hanging Moveable Bridge. Free drawing workshops will also be held for children and adults to inspire and develop their passion for the arts. Activity guide Each visitor will also be given an activity guide which will be packed with facts, puzzles, activities and information. The Main Gallery will also have an activity corner focusing on the Vertruvian Man where visitors will be able to learn more of Leonardo’s symbolic drawing and the golden ratio. There will be hands on measuring activities to test out Leonardo’s theories.

Leonardo lecture programme For those seeking more in-depth information, there will be a varied lecture programme with guest speakers. • a representative from the Royal Collection to talk about Leonardo’s drawings • an historian to talk about Renaissance Italy • an engineer to talk about Leonardo’s inventions • a representative from the Anthropos Association to talk about the creation of the exhibition. • a representative from the Royal Aeronautical Society. The hunt is on to find and reward the best secretary in Surrey. Directors of Surrey-based companies are being invited to nominate secretaries for The Surrey Office Star competition, organised by Diamond Logistics and Printing.com. The shortlisted secretaries – who are efficient, organised, full of initiative and a true asset to their employer - will be interviewed by a panel of judges, with the winners announced at an award ceremony at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre on 9 July 2009. In addition to being named Surrey Office Star 2009, the winning secretary will receive a trophy and a one night spa break for two at Champneys Forest Mere worth £500. Two runners up will each be given a 55 minute treatment of their choice at Champneys in Guildford. According to Kate Lester, managing director of Diamond Logistics and one of the Surrey Office Star judges, “Last year the Surrey Office Star competition focused on receptionists but this year we have decided to put the spotlight on another unsung hero in the workplace – the secretary. “Business isn’t all about the movers and shakers – it’s also about the organisers and facilitators. In today’s pressurised work environment, secretaries’ roles have extended considerably. They are expected to juggle a large workload and have a wide range of business skills. I genuinely believe that behind every great business person stands a great secretary – and these people are real stars, Surrey Office Stars!” Joining Kate on the Surrey Office Star judging panel will be Fiona Humberstone, managing director of Printing.com in Guildford and Emma Hanney, HR manager at Herrington & Carmichael, the firm of Surrey solicitors which employed last year’s Surrey Office Star winner prior to her retirement. Fiona Humberstone comments, “The dictionary definition of a secretary is ‘a person employed to handle correspondence, keep files and do clerical work for another person or an organisation’. Real life secretaries are so much more but often receive little recognition for the valuable role they play in an organisation. “Surrey Office Star is an accolade for both the employer and employee and I hope that people will take just a few minutes of their time to nominate their secretaries for this year’s award.” For further details and to download a copy of the application form, visit www.surreyofficestar.co.uk. Deadline for entries is 20 June 2009. The Surrey Guide Summer 2009

Surrey’s storage Pod buzzes with business opportunities The Storage Pod in Weybridge is proving to be Surrey’s latest networking venue for entrepreneurs. In addition to offering secure storage facilities for businesses, the innovative company has developed into an incubator for start-ups and a networking hub for entrepreneurs.

62

According to Linda Conway, founder of The Storage Pod, “I set up the business a year ago, having spotted a gap in the market for business storage – whether for long-term or short-term inventory needs. As an entrepreneur myself, I quickly realised the value in introducing relevant clients to each other and encouraging clients to share contacts and information. Since then, the Pod has blossomed into a networking hub.” In addition to competitively priced storage rooms, The Storage Pod is equipped with laptop points and wi-fi facilities in the reception area as well as meeting rooms for hire. It is in the communal areas that business owners began to network and develop ways of working together. Deals of various sizes, including an international contract worth several million pounds, are now being discussed amongst The Storage Pod’s clients.

Linda Conway concludes, ‘In today’s economic climate, businesses are looking at ways of working differently and keeping costs low. Many are reducing office space by using our storage facilities and checking or dispatching inventory from our site. The Storage Pod has become a virtual business centre, not just for new businesses but also for some who have been trading for over 30 years. There’s a real buzz about the place and we are doing all we can to help our clients to grow.’ The unusual venue is the location for a BNI meeting this month, with over 50 attendees expected. It will also play host to a Surrey Chambers for an event in the Autumn.
