TYPESET TYPE & HAND-LETTER TYPE Typography vs. Hand-Lettering
Typography and hand-lettered type possess similar principles, such as kerning/character spacing rules, but are not the same because hand-lettering is not a form of typesetting with designated rules for he specific type-family. Typography is not hand-lettering and hand-lettering can not be referred to as typography, however, both are forms of communication. Hand-lettering is typically used for display text; it is known as a from of draftsmanship, which is the art of drawing letter forms that serve the sole purpose of representing the current idea. This is why it is not considered typography, because typography is typically used for titles and body text where large areas of information need be to recorded in a quick and efficient manner.
Reasons Behind Research Interest
All of this information was obtained through the reading of “Understanding The Difference Between Type & Lettering” 1, an article from Smashing Magazine, which peaked my interest in understanding the interaction between both typography and hand-lettering, or illustrated typography, and how together they can effectively communicate a message. Also, I am interested in why some designs only use hand-lettering. This article is one of few aspects of browsing typography online that has highly peaked my interested. I feel the interest comes from the fact that handlettering is more of a drawing where you can use aspects of type and make it your own by allowing it to represent an image or just simply draw more attention to itself with stroke variations, etc.

Advertisement for Virgin Atlantic, where Virgin is taking the blame and or credit for the most ridiculous regulations in travel that they world has ever seen. This poster combines hand written letter forms with typography. The typography in this poster is white, with a black background to separate it from the image in a less drastic style. The actual logo contains hand rendered style lettering that gives Virgin its very unique image. The on your side being hand written below the atlantic typography ads personalization to a corporate company. This is a way to make consumers believe feel that if this company has time to write out its slogan then they deal with the little issues of their customers and don’t overlook hospitality. The posters/magazine advertisements, appear to have been created first and once it was discovered that felonies were being committed while the plan was moving, the handwriting seems to be a quick way to incorporate the concept that the company was completely aware of the faults, and unwanted passengers, and therefore wanted to iterate the fact that people were over reacting. The urgency in the hand writing also portrays this concept, along with the fact that the company as taken time to focus on the complaint and personally address it.

• The hand-lettered text is based on the handwriting of an architect, which is very drafted, hard to read, and not very neat. Soli Px is a font from www. myfonts.com that is a near exact representation.
Ad that is for the Maine Tourism Campaign to make people want to come visit Maine and enjoy the same peaceful serenity that is in this magazine spread. This ad represents hand letter forms which gives the overall piece a more organic appeal. The type in the Maine Tourism ad, to me, is meant to represent a more organic feel of water rippling and moving to mimic the boats in the water. These typefaces would be based off of script style fonts. This type is purely hand written and bears not semblance to existing fonts because of the lack of consistency. Handlettering, which doesn’t have to abide by the rules of type, is shown here with cursive, script, capital letters, lowercase letters, tight spacing and much more.
Advertising Agency: Full Jazz Propaganda Company: Unidas Rent a Car This is an ad for Unidas. Used cars you can trust. This company specializes in fleet management and vehicle rentals. These ads are making you look at the origins of the words so that you will make the relation that this is the original car rental company. This style of illustrated typography attempts to use the letters to resemble the actual mean of the word. For example, Whisky Water, with the illustrated ice, represents the whiskey in a glass due to the way the letters curve in the form of moving liquid. These styles of illustration allow type to change more drastically without large amounts of modification that would have to occur with stock fonts.

This would be based on a mix between sansserif and serif typefaces. This image contains illustrated type for Whisky Water so that the designer can also illustrate what the words are saying in order to draft a hand-rendered form which represents the liquid feel and form of both these items we drink. The logo, unidas, is created from a modified version of the font Centro Sans Pro.
Project: Series of theater posters Created for Les Gemeaux, Sceaux, France by Michel Bouvet of Paris, France. Type Image Message. This poster is for Maison de Poupee (A Doll’s House) where the head of a doll is montaged in front of a photograph of a mansion to portray a housewife that faces the struggle to gain independence from her lifestyle. This poster, which represents separation, shows a very unique form of hand illustrated typography that is placed in a poster with static computer type. The overall typeface used is sans-serf and represents Myriad Pro or Helvetica Neue in nature due to its geometric format. The hand written type seems to have been created with an eraser because it appears that this type is out of place and was simply just taken out of the image. This separation is also a representation of the woman’s want to pull away and be independent.

This is an advertisement that represents a different style of hand drawn type. It more so resembles letter presses use of thick type forms which mimic fonts such as Impact. This layout show variations of serif and sansserif typefaces that work well placed together. The most hand done aspect of this design is, I believe, that it was created word by word rather than being ran through a machine because Hand is an example of an illustrated image that is made into a sans-serif style type. The fonts are as follows: the word Type is Impact, the word Press resembles Blackoak Std, the word Letter is very similar to Savoye LET, the word hand is illustrated ad a different form of emphasis, and the word Drawn is similar to a font like Didot where there are harsh variations between thick and thin line contrast. From the How design magazine.

Both of these images portray advertisements for the CYMK magazine. The image (picture above) with CYMK54 is a hand illustrated style type that mimics a script style typeface. It is drawn in order to portray a differentiation in widths and variations in the creation of the serifs for each letter, which are unique per character due to arrangement. The Facebook Poll ad (pictured left) is meant to represent different aspects of the poll and this is done through differentiated hand illustrated type. Each type represents a different aspect of the poll and in turn gives the overall idea more character. The way the characters are arranged with their backgrounds is meant to resemble a very vintage style of design while relating to a more modern feel with social media technology. This CMYK cover design was created by John Langdon and is meant to model a psychodelic poster lettering. This form of hand-lettering is meant to stand for one representation and not meant to be repeated due to the fact that the draftsmanship is what makes the ltters unique in regards to the use of regular typography or typesetting. This type arrangement is however inspired by the font Marion Regular. Langdon did mention that one must understand all the fucntions and rules of type before they can break the rules.

This is another work done by John Langdon that was featured in the CMYK magazine. This ad represents different aspects of type through the use of handlettering that appeares in different formats. The unique formats are meant to represent the different style and peronas of the named artist. These illustrated forms may be impsired by tradtional typography but are hand lettered so they hold a unique quality that can not be represented through the use of standard type. This way personality can be given to the letter forms at will.
Philosophy by John Langdon. This is a delicate and appeal type arrangement that is hand lettered but for a particular reason. This is an ambigram, created by John Langdon, which is the creation of a word or phrase the can be read forwards, and if you turn the page upside down you will again see the word philosophy. To create such an arrangement the designer must break the rules and understand that the fact that words can only be read from one vantage point and a letter-form only represents one sound, may be the rules of typography but does not hold true with hand-lettered type. Through many studies and trials, Langdon created this unique vantage point through character study, letter-form styles, and much more. I did however find a font online called Buffet script that resembles some of the letter forms pictured in Philosophy.
This is a very old form of an illustrated type that is highly ornamental in nature. The image and type was most likely created on a woodblock and then printed as one consecutive piece. This is a strong possibility due to the letter ornament and variations in the letter forms which would not be possible with a letterpress machine. The G in Guide have many similarities to the font Adobe Garamond Pro Regular. The main letters in Zoological and Garden seem to be similar to a Helvetica or a typical display style sans-serif font.

In this poster, the combination of typography styles give the idea of illustration as well as set typography. The main focus here is the bloody type, which was a normal typeface that had blood illustrated over it in order to look like this person has been murdered and its their blood on the ground. The ax helps to emphasize the presence of the blood stained type. The font used for You Betcha! Brawl closely resembles the typeface Noteworthy.

For the website layout above, I want to focus on the word Sasquatch. This is a very stylized type which could be either illustrated in a program like Adobe Illustrator or be a creative cursive font. I would picture it as a more illustrated type due to its stylized form and its overall complexity. Through further research, I found that the font used is Candy Script which was modified in order to give it the stylized look that sets this logo apart from that actual typeface and gives the word Sasquatch more emphasis and movement. This is from the How Design magazine.
This is a hand written style of illustrated typography where its trying to capture the painterly style of the famous artist Van Gogh. This is part of an advertisement campaign for Feast, which is an istockphoto website. This advertisement, with its script style lettering, consists of so many letter forms with thick and thin widths that it almost contradicts the rule of design where you should not use more than two different fonts per ad. To me, hand illustrated type does not have to follow these rules as closely because it is setting its own standard rather than following a set kerning restriction, etc. The hand-lettering used in this piece is meant to resemble that of Vincent Van Gogh’s handwriting. The word Van Gogh resembles the typeface P22Vincent-Regular and the 3rd line down is very similar to the font P22 Gauguin Pro. The ampersand sign is very similar to another form of Van Gogh’s handwriting which is mimicked by the typeface Zaner Four Pro. From the How design magazine.
