INSPIRATION MAKERS! This year Brilliant Labs is looking for those teachers who inspire others to be their best and who are taking chances to try new things to educate students. We're pleased to share this Newfoundland and Labrador "Inspiration Maker!" WHO: KAYLA SNOW AND ALICE PEDDLE AND GRADE 5/6 STUDENTS WHERE: J.R. SMALLWOOD, MIDDLE SCHOOL, WABUSH, NL

TEACHER REFLECTION In September, we decided to introduce the idea of a deep learning project with this class of grade 5 and 6 students. We started by sharing ideas and discussing some of the concerns we had about things in our community. We were impressed with the fact they chose Seniors Living as their topic and were eager to get started. Students researched, surveyed the community, analyzed data, created a campaign, met with local politicians, designed a facility, surveyed possible locations, created a budget, and built a model for a seniors living home. Students used many tools from the makerspace to work on the project including We used the information learned and the microbits to set up lighting that would sense the lightness or darkness and then turn on.
