After,hejoinedthe Tufts University GraduateSchoolof BiologicalSciences(Tufts GSBS)inBoston,MAforaPhD inPharmacologybutspent mostofhistimeonthe campusinMedford,MA.

Betweencollegeandgraduate schoolWillwascontracedby QinetiQ-NA tododefense researchasananalytical chemistinboththeir Survivabilityand Transportationgroups. Inyourlifetimehasanyone inspiredyoutochangeyour mind,forthebetter,toovercome anobstacle?

I’malwayamazedbythe diversityofpersonalitiesone encountersinthesciences. Somefitthemoldofwhat we’dexpectbutmanydonot. Onesuchexamplethat

alwaysgavemesolacewas physicistRichardFeynman whostoodinstarkcontrastto hisbrilliantpoly-math contemporaryMurrayGellMann.Thetwocouldnotbe moredifferentintheir approachtoresearchasGellMannwasstudiousand carefulandFeynmana charismaticrogue.Thisis alsoreflectedintheirworkas Feynmanbecamefamousfor ‘Feynmandiagrams’that expresssubatomicparticle collisionswhereasGell-Mann wouldneverdreamofdoing suchathing.Allofthisisa roundaboutwayofsaying thatsomanyofusconvince ourselvesthatwedonotfit thepictureofwhata researcherlookslikebutthe realityisstubbornnessoften winsoutoversheerintellect.I happentoputmyselfinthe moreeccentriccategorybut justsohappentobe extraordinarilystubborn. Thisisgoingtosoundstrange butIlovebreakingthings.Not intheshamelessdestruction ofpropertysensebutmorein thebreakingofdogmatic perspectivesandmaintaining the‘established’(i.e. outdated)waysofdoing things.Wehaveasocietal problemofanointinga handfulofexpertssodecided bylargeinstitutionswhenthe realityisthatapassionate hobbyistcanoftenbe considerablymoreeffective. Inhisvibrantworkshop,an atmosphereofimaginationand possibilitiescapturestheattention ofeverypersonwhowalksthrough thedoor.

Atthedoorway,itispossibletopull onahandle(carvedintheshapeof aduck)toactivatethesoundofa trumpet,whichisinfactanold transporttruckhorn.Whatiseven moreextraordinaryisthatthe soundcomesoutfromasculpture ofatrumpeterthatstandsatthetop oftheroof!Awesome,isn'tit?And, youshouldseethegargoylerain gutterdownspout?Justoutofthis world!

Uponentering,guests'eyesare drawntoavarietyofobjectsthat canbeseenandappreciatedonthe wall,onshelvesandontheceiling! Eachlittlecorneroftheworkshop displaysadifferentcreationandall thesensesarechallenged.Luc's grandfather'sphotoandtoolsare proudlydisplayedonthewall, revealingabeautifulpartofhistory, hisadmirationandhisgreat inspiration!

Sittinginhiswheelchair,Lucmoves fromonecorneroftheworkshopto theothertoworkwithwood.From ideation,hedevelopssketches, oftenmovingontogluingboards thatwillthenbeusedforcarving andcreatingfigurines,birds, whales,walkingsticks,birdhouses, signsandmore.Allittakesisan idea,andtheartistdivesrightinto hispassionandhiscreative element.Ontheceiling,wealso findtheoutlineofvisitors'hands!

Centred’ApprentissageduHaut Madawaskacametotheworkshop tomeetMr.LucCyr,hearhisstories andlearnimportantwoodworking skillswithhim.Whentheyarrived, thechildren'seyeswerefilledwith amazement.Aworldofimagination andcreationwaspresentedto them!Inaddition,Lucquickly capturedtheirattentionwithhis serenevoiceandhisstorytelling talent!Because,youknow,Lucloves tosharehisstoriesofcharacters fromthepastandamusing anecdoteswithguestsofallages.

"Mygrandfatherwasmyidol,"Luc Cyrsharedwiththechildren."I startedsculptingatyourage, inspiredbymygrandfather'sworkin hisworkshop.""Everydayafter schoolIwouldgothere."

Beginningwithademonstrationof sometoolsandcarving,Lucthen invitedthechildrentobuildtheir birdhouses.Whatfunitwasfor themtotakeonthischallengeusing adrill,screwsandnails!The collaborationbetweenthestudents wasveryimportantandensuredthe completionoftheproject.Itgoes withoutsayingthatwithLucCyr, therearenocornerscut.Each birdhousehadtobemadewith patience,precisionandcare. Theywereblue,greenandred, thesebeautifulbirdhouses!Each

childproudlyheldhiswhilewalking outoftheworkshop.And,before leaving,Lucofferedabeautiful sculptedwhistletoeachchildand adult.Suchapreciousgiftandwhat agreatintergenerationalactivity, promotingthesharingofpassions, knowledge,resourcesaswellas creatingfriendships!

Asachildofasingleparent,my momhasstruggledtofind balance,buthashelpedtokeepus grounded.Thankfully,mymother andIhavealwaysmanagedtostay togetherandtobesafe.Shehas beenmyrockovertheyearsand wehavealwayshadeachother. However,povertyhasimpacted manyareasofmylife,oneofthem beingmyeducation.Itwasthanks tomovingbacktoNewBrunswick andamazingteachersthatIwas abletobeattheoddsandnotonly graduatefromhighschool,with honors,butalsoearned acceptancetouniversity.

Thisbeingmyfirstjob,Iwasn't surehowitwouldbe,butthe experiencehasbeenamazing. Meetingthekids,andseeingmy youngerselfinthem,Ihave realizedresiliencethroughmy educationandhowmymotherand teachershaveinfluencedmeto notgiveuponmyself.Ihopetouse myexperiencesgrowingupwith povertyandtoshowkidsthatno matteryourspotinlife,ifyou climbuphardenoughyoucan alwaysgettosomewherebetter.

Needinghelpisn'ttheend andaskingisn'twrong;asa communitythegreatestgift wecangiveistoshowour youthtodaythattheir educationwillalways unlockopportunities,no matterhowdistant,orhow harditseemsnow,that itis possible.Iamproofofthat fact.

BrilliantLabsNovaScotia broughthands-onsteamfun tocampersacrossthe provincethisyear,byhosting andsupportingsummer campsfromclaretocape breton.

Thesesummercampswere notonlyimportantforthose thatattended,theywerealso anopportunityforolder studentstotakeona mentorshiprolewithinour organization.Thebrilliant labssummermentorship programemploysstudents overthesummermonths, givingthemvaluablework experienceandcommunity connections.Theyareableto carryovertheirleadership, makerandsteamskillsinto theirupcomingschoolyear, welovehavingbrilliant ambassadorsinournova scotiaschools!

Oursupportrangedfrom engagingafternoon workshopswithpartnerslike theblackbusinessinitiative's andtheymcatoweek-long campswithschoolsplusand lasociétéacadiennedeclare. Kidsfromages5-16were givenaccesstosteam programmingwithaglobal twist.

BLNSmentorsandspecialists hadthepleasureof introducingtheunited nationssustainable developmentgoalsto campersbyintegratingthem intovarioussteam-based activities.Theincorporation ofthesegoalsintomaking helpscreateanawarenessof globalissuesallwhile spreadingthemessageto otherswithpowerfulprojects suchascustombuttons, papercircuitart,coding,stopanimationpublicservice announcements,tonamea few.

Halifaxregionalmunicipality recreationandécolesplus

camperstackledunsdg’s numbers2(ZeroHunger),11 (SustainableCommunities andCities),and12 (ResponsibleConsumption andProduction).Theydidthis bylearningaboutgrowing theirownproduceand makingtheirownscaleddowngreenhouseoutof recycledmaterials.

Withourvirtual programming,wewereableto keepupwiththehands-on demandofourcampersat homeandhostavarietyof

“Neopixeldanceparties, drawingunicornsand pikachus,andturningbutton makingintoabusiness,”is whatItoldotherswhenI describedmysummerasa STEAMMentoratBrilliant Labs.Naturally,Iwouldsee somebewilderedfacesasto whyIamnotdedicatingmy summertomystudies.AsI enterintomyfinalyearofhigh schoolwithhopesofstudying neuroscienceandhistoryin undergraduatestudies,I observedhowadolescence andadulthoodoftenomitsthe elementsoffunthatIhave beenluckytoexperiencewith theyouthatBrilliantLabs’ SummerSTEAMCamps.I heldthisexpectationthatI wouldsolelybehelping childrengainexposureto STEAM.However,ittrulywere thekidswhohelpedand remindedmehowessentialit istoprioritizefunwhichhas formedthebasisoflearningat BrilliantLabs.Assuch,Iwant totakeamomenttoreflecton thesemomentsoffun.

Thissummer,Ihavebeen giventheopportunitytomentor at EcoleBeaubassin nearly everyweek.Ibecamevery familiarwiththechildrenasI wasalwayswelcomedwith hugsandenthusiasmfor exploring.Thisgroupin particularwasdrawnto micro: bit and b.Board technologyand itwasclearthattheyhada highaptitudeforlearningnew aspectsofblockcoding.Asan individualwhohasfounda passionforPythoncodingin juniorhighschool,itwarmed myheartseeingsomanylearn

aboutif-elsestatements, arrays,booleansandmany otherconceptsthatare applicabletoseveral programminglanguages.In onesession,wewerecoding neopixelsandincluded youngeragedcampersto participateaswell.Whatwould haveinitiallybeenaquick activity,turnedintoadance party!Weturnedthelightsoff andputonmusicwhilethe rainbowcolouredneopixel stripscreatedtheperfect environmenttosingand dance.Afterthesession,one

BeingamentoratEcole Beaubassinmademe recognizehowvaluablethese momentsoffuncanbeasit sparkssomuchoptimismin youthtopursuetheircareer goals.

Mytimespentatoneofthe YMCAs intheHalifaxareahas alsobeenanextremely rewardingexperienceinterms ofunderstandingthatthereis no“cookie-cutter”methodto mentoring.Aswewere exploringstopmotion animation,asmallgroupof camperspreferrednottowork ingroupsettings.Inoticedthat thesamecampershadthe mostcreativemindsand wantedtoexpressthatthrough theirownartwork.Duringthis session,Isatwiththosewho wantedtotakeadifferent approachtostopmotionby ideatingaplanonpaper.This laterturnedintoasession wherewedrewunicornsand Pikachu’s!Onecamperdrew meaunicornandIstillhaveit hungonmywall.Theytookso muchownershipintheirown work.Iknowthatdespitenot spendingthewholetime workingonstopmotion, ideatingthestepstoastop motionmovieanddrawing theirfavoritecharactersis morethanthecreative expressionthatIhopedwould beachievedattheYMCA camps.

Lastly,theBlackBusiness Initiativehasfosteredan environmentwhereblackyouth canadoptanentrepreneurial mindsetatayoungage,andI havebeensoluckytomentor them.Weworkedonabutton makingprojectwhichthe camperslatersoldtothepublic

indowntownHalifax.Allofthe camperswereabletomake profitandknowingthattheywill continuetousetheirconfidence andtalentsinotherareasoftheir life,leftmefeelinginspiredto applythatsamelevelof confidenceinmylife.

Imaybeatapointinmylife whereIamresponsiblefor choosingmycareerpathinboth thesciencesandarts.Fromall theadviceIhavebeengiven regardingmycareergoals,it wasmyexperienceworkingwith youthatBrilliantLabsthathas taughtmetobecurious,unique andconfidentwhilehavingfun. Fromneopixeldanceparties,to drawingunicornsandPikachu, tobuttonmaking;thereisno doubtthattheseyoungminds willgrowuptobenothingless thanexceptional.

WhenIfirstgotthecalltobe aSTEAMmentor,Ididn’t realizehowmuchfunitwould be!I’vealwayshadinterests insciences,tech,andart,so havingajobthatI’m passionateaboutisessential tome.Thissummerhasn’tlet medown.I’vemetsomany wonderfulandkindpeople whoallhavetheirownspecial talentsandaresoeagerto showtheworldwhatthey havetogiveandtolearnnew things.

Imyselfcertainlylearnedlots overthesummer!I’velearned howtoletlooseandenjoy myselfwhileworkingwith theseactivities,andI’vealso learnedthatsomethingsjust can’tbeplanned.Andthat’s ok!Ifindthosemomentsare whatkeepsthings interesting!It’slikeBobRoss said: “Therearenomistakes, onlyhappyaccidents.”

Honestly,outofthewholejob, thekidsarewhatmadeit worthit.Ialwayslovetosee theshyerkidscomeoutof theirshells,orthemore independentoneslearningto workasateam.ThekidsI’ve workedwiththissummer haveinspiredmetokeep workinghardandpursuemy dreams.Forexample,there wereafewwhowereamazing startingoffwithcodingor design,buttherewerealso oneswhowerebrandnew. Whatwasspecialtoseewas that,evenifitwasnewand differenttothem,theynever gaveup!Bytheend,lotsof kidswerejustasgoodasthe othersjustbecauseoftheir determinationanddevotion tolearning.

InSeptemberIplantogoto NSCCtostudyIT programmingandIcan confidentlysaythatI’ve learnedsomevaluableskills thatwillhelpmemove forwardinmyfuturecareer.

NotonlydidIgrowonmy previousknowledgeofcoding, butIalsolearnedhowtowork withdifferenttypesof technologyandexplore everythingtheyhadtooffer, whichwilldefinitelyaidmein

thefuture.Allinall,it’sbeen suchablastworkingfor BrilliantLabsasaSTEAM mentor!!

ItwentfromonedayIwas scrollingthroughjob offeringson CanadaYouth JobBank andtherewereafew options,butnonewerereally catchingmyinterestsoIkept checkinguponthesiteevery fewweeks.

Then,finally,Isee: “Summer CampCounselor” Iwasso excitedIhearsomanystories aboutcampcounselorjobs beingsuchfunsoIemailed andaskediftherewereany openingsandtheresponseI gotbackwassomething alongthelinesof “Asofright nowthereareno;however,we willconnectwhenthereis”.I thoughtforsuretherewasn’t goingtobeanopening,soI justwentalongwithmydays.

Iwasoutsidewalkingwithmy momandbrother,whenI decidedtocheckmyemail andthereitwas “wehavean opening” Iwassoexcited,I respondedasfastasIcould “ ofcourseI'mstillinterested!” .

Afewdaysgoby,andIgetan emailaboutaninterviewover GoogleMeet,Iacceptedthe inviteandthereIwasthenext dayintheinterviewas nervousascanbe.The interviewwentbyfairly quicklyandthenIgot informationonmytraining whichstartedthefollowing week.

Everyoneinvolvedinthe trainingwassowelcoming andnice,especiallytheother mentors.Iwassosurprisedin howwelcomingeveryone involvedinBrilliantLabswas, itisabsolutelyawonderful environmenttoworkin. Startingthejob,Ineverreally

hadexperienceintechor evenaninterestincoding, butoverthecourseofmy trainingmyinterestinit spiked.It’ssuchawonderful areatobe workingin,it isso inspiringto seechildren usetheir thinkingand creativity skillsand turnthem into activity...thereisalotof potentialintheseyoung coders!

Inthebeginning,Ihada feelingthiswouldonlytake placeonline,becauseBL didn’thaveasiteintheHRM regionbutthatfeelingquickly disappearedafterthefirst week.Meetingmynew coworkerswasgreattoo,

somealreadykneweach other,Iintroducedmyself, presentationsweremadeand aseachsessionwentby,our groupgotcloser,andour ProvincialDirectorSarahis doingherbesttopairusup andalternateeachweek.

WhatIlearnedfromthese earlysessionsisthatBL doesn’tonlylimitthemselves totechnology-based activities,wetouchuponthe topicofenvironmentand nature,thekidsgettobe creativeintheirownkindof waywiththeequipment providedbyBL.

Ialsolearnedhowtouse B.Boards andgettingfamiliar withcoding Micro:bits,LED lights,makemusicetc...Ilook forwardtoworkatBLinthe future,it’sagreatcharity organizationandIwould highlyrecommendit,Ifor exampledidn’thavealotof knowledgeinSTEAMbutI learnedonthejobandthat’s whatmadeitbetter.

MysummerworkingwithBrilliantLabs wasonetoremember.Itwasasummer filledwithlaughsandexcitement,I cannotwaittodoitagainnextyear.We hadarockystartinPEIthisyearwith veryfewstafftoworkwith.However, MarcusandIwereabletoputonagreat summerofcamps.Ourteamdynamic waspositiveandupliftingandbetween twostaffmembers,wewereableto covercampsonallendsoftheisland.

Withourbackgroundsinsciences,we wereverypassionateabout natural and biomaking.Wefocusedon SDGs putin placetoreducepollutionandwasteas wellastohelpthelandandwater ecosystems.Wewereabletoteachkids howtomakepaperusingrecycled paperandmushroomspickedfromthe ground.Thisseriesofcampsfocusedon reducingwasteandrecyclingmaterials whichcoincideswiththe SDG12 responsibleconsumption and production.Wefocusedonreducing wastegenerationthroughrecyclingand reuse.Wealsoheldacampwherewe madeourownleatherusingkombucha tea.Creatingleatherthiswaycould

hopefullyleadtoananimal-friendlyway ofcreatingleather.Thisworkswellwith the SDG15lifeonland aswecould hopefullysomedaynolongerneedtouse animalskinsforleather.

Myfavoritecampchallengethis summerwasbottleRocketDay.We cleaneduptheplanetbyusingrecycled materialstodesignourbottlerockets andhadanexhilaratingdayasthekids' mindswereblownasthebottlerockets werelaunched.Itisalwaysablast seeingtheirfaceslightupwhenthe rocketstakeflight.Itwasevenmore rewardingtolistentoachildexplainthe mechanicsbehindthebottlerockets andhowtheprocessworkstoanother studentperfectly.

Thissummer,Iworkedasa STEAMMentorforBrilliant Labs,whichhasbroughtme somuchenjoymentdaily.We dodifferentcampseachday oftheweek,andeachweek wehaveadifferentactivity picked.Forexample,wehave shownthecampshowtouse Scratch,aMakeyMakey,and 3DPrinting.Scratchisa programming/coding softwarethatallowskidsto pickacharacterand background,andcodethem tomoveandmakesounds withdifferentcommands.The MakeyMakeykitteacheskids thebasicsofelectricityand howacircuithastobeclosed onbothends.

Ihavethoroughlyenjoyed workingateachandevery camp,anditbringsmeso muchjoytoseethekids' faceslightupwithasmile whentheylearnsomething new,orgetaquestion answered.Tome,thereis nothingmorepurethana happychildwiththe resourcestolearn.

Iamalsoastudentat College

OfTheNorthAtlantic inthe ArchitecturalEngineering Technologyprogram,and althoughthisdoesn't completelypertaintomy course,itdoesuseTinkerCAD for3Dprinting,andIuse AutoCADformyschooling. Bothoftheseareownedby Autodesk.

Thebiggesttakeawayfrom workingasaSTEAMMentor thissummer,isthatyou don'thavetohaveprior knowledgetolearn something.Aslongasyou havethemotivation,the drive,andthewillingnessto learn,youcouldachieve anythingyouputyourmind to,atabsolutelyanyage!

ThisjobwassomethingI willnevertakeforgranted, andIthankeachand everyoneforthis opportunity!
