SPRING GARDENING IDEA GROW A GIANT SUNFLOWER

Do you want to impress the kids with your supernatural gardening powers? Now is the perfect time to plant a spring garden and the sunflower is the perfect flower for kids of all ages to grow. The best part about sunflowers is, if you follow a few simple steps, your kids can grow sunflowers that will grow to be taller than they are! The key to growing giant sunflowers: 1. Plant in Spring 2. Plant in sunshine 3. Till the soil before you add seeds 4. Mix in some compost 5. Bury the seeds 15cms below the ground 6. Space seeds 50cm apart 7. Water the sunflower 3-4 times a week 8. Fertilise once a week with a water fertiliser 9. When your sunflower reaches ½ a metre cut the watering back to every other week 10. Water the root zone but avoid getting water on the stalk

DAISY HILL KOALA CENTRE

THE DAISY HILL KOALA CENTRE

Spring is the perfect time to enjoy the newly refurbished Daisy Hill Koala Centre. 5 resident koalas call Daisy Hill Koala Centre home, all with their own story about why they were removed from the wild. There are large colourful displays in the education centre with lots of interactive activities to keep the kids engaged. Finish up your visit with a picnic in the surrounding greenspace and take a stroll through one of the many walking trails. While this is not a koala cuddling experience, this is an experience that will teach kids a lot about koalas, how to spot them in the wild and how to contribute to their conservation.

14 | www.brisbanekids.com.au

Daisy Hill Koala Centre and the surrounding trails are wheelchair and pram friendly. • • • • •

Admission is free Wildlife talks happen at 11am and 2pm Best experienced on a sunny day Daisy Hill Koala Centre is open every day from 10am-4pm, except on Christmas Day, New Years Day and Good Friday. Daisy Hill Koala Centre is located 25km south of Brisbane on Daisy Hill Road in Daisy Hill.

DAISY HILL KOALA CENTRE OTHER PLACES TO SEE KOALAS IN BRISBANE LONE PINE KOALA SANCTUARY Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary is home to dozens of koalas in addition to all the other animals that call the sanctuary home. There are koala cuddling packages you can purchase which come with a photo memento. Their koala research centre recently opened to the public and offers interactive displays for kids to explore and gain a better understanding of the challenges facing koalas today. AUSTRALIA ZOO Lots of friendly koalas call this place home, with plenty of opportunities to get up close and personal with these Australian treasures. Australia Zoo also offer packages for koala cuddles for kids above the age of 8. Their wildlife hospital is also open for tour bookings which happen several times a day. CURRUMBIN WILDLIFE SANCTUARY Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary treats over 500 koalas every single year. Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary offers a unique koala experience that is as much about education and understand as about being up close with these amazing animals. They also offer photo packages.

Get ready for fun! Visit IKEA North Lakes or IKEA Logan for lots of fun, free activities to keep the kids entertained these school holidays. Š Inter IKEA Systems B.V. 2018

Visit IKEA.com.au/Northlakes or IKEA.com.au/Logan to see what’s happening at your local IKEA Store.

WILD KOALAS Wild koalas are becoming increasingly difficult to find because of their fragmented habitats. Noosa National Park and The Koala Bushlands are two decent sized areas where you may spot a koala, but sightings are never assured.

SPECIAL FEATURE: LEARN TO SWIM

Learn to swim LEARN TO SWIM AT BRISBANE CITY COUNCIL POOLS

Have you been looking for a learn to swim program for your Brisbane Kids? It’s never too early, or too late, to get your kids enrolled in local swimming classes. Brisbane City Council pools offer learn to swim classes, with many offering programs starting when babies are just a few months old. BABY LEARN TO SWIM CLASSES Baby learn to swim classes are designed to provide confidence to parents and to familiarise babies with water, so they are happy and confident in the water with mum or dad. LEARN TO SWIM CLASSES FOR KIDS When you invest in swimming lessons for your child you are ensuring they learn the right techniques, so they can enjoy swimming and also be safe and confident around water. Learn to swim classes generally happen once a week and take place over a school term. You don’t need to wait until Summer to enrol, with many pools offering swimming lessons all year round. INTENSIVE SWIM LESSONS Intensive swimming lessons are learn to swim classes that take place every day, over one week, generally during school holidays. It means in one week your child will learn what might take them five weeks in standard weekly classes. Just make sure to book in advance as the intensive swim classes tend to be extremely popular over the Spring and Summer break.

PLANES AND TRAINS

There is nothing quite like the look on the face of a child when they see a plane take off for the first time. When they hear the chug of an old steam engine or they bask in the simple joys of touring through a park on a trackless train. We hope this guide makes it easier for you to experience this wonder.

PLANES BRISBANE AIRPORT Acacia Street Loop, Brisbane Domestic Airport. We love this spot, not least because it’s got ample space for kids to be kids, but because if you are lucky you might even get a wave or a smile from a pilot! RAAF AMBERLEY AVIATION CENTRE The Aviation Heritage Centre offers displays that include Sabre and Mirage fighter jets, a flawless WWII Jeep, Sioux and Iroquois helicopters and a Caribou airlifter. The RAAF Amberley Aviation Heritage Centre is open to the public every third Sunday of the month from 9am until 3pm (excluding public holidays). Public open days are free. Their next open day is on the 21st of October. Complete the online application prior to entry to avoid standing in a queue. THE QUEENSLAND AIR MUSEUM Fast becoming a favourite weekend activity, the Queensland Air Museum holds several open days every year where they open the cockpits to the public. Open Cockpit Weekends generally involve multiple aircraft and the opportunity to tour the insides of the cockpits. Past aircraft have included both the F-111 and The Mirage. You can visit the Queensland Air Museum every day except Christmas Day. Adults $14, Children $7.
