Around 90 minutes drive from Brisbane, one of the Gold Coast’s most stunning waterfalls awaits. Best visited after some rain when it is truly impressive, Purling Brook Falls flows all year round and provides a real reward for your 4km trek. The Purling Brook Falls Circuit is a stunning walk through Gondwana and Eucalypt forests and is teeming with wildlife. The trail begins close to the top of the falls, with a track that can be taken in either direction (though clockwise is recommended to avoid having to climb too many stairs at the end). There are two lookouts that give great views of the falls very close to the beginning of the circuit—one lookout around 100m in one direction and the other around 350m in the opposite direction. The 4km circuit is quite steep in parts, but is definitely worth the walk as it leads down into the gorge, providing fantastic views of the Purling Brook Falls from below. Surrounded by lush green tree ferns and often framed by rainbows in the spray from the falls, it’s a magical place to sit and gaze up at the incredible natural beauty of our Queensland National Parks. 6

WHALE WATCHING
Whale watching season is upon us and thousands of humpback whales are beginning to make their northern migration up the Queensland coast. Whether you want an up close and personal approach to a whale encounter or you prefer to view them from the safety of the land, there are plenty of places you can see a whale from the South East Queensland coastline.
WHALE WATCHING FROM L AND Whale spotting isn’t that difficult on account of the 30,000+ Humpback whales that frequent Queensland waters every year. There are so many whales now that the East Australian coastline is often referred to as the Humpback Highway. While it doesn’t matter what time of day you go whale spotting, it can be easier to spot them in the water in the morning and afternoon without the glare of the sun.
Burleigh Headlands Burleigh National Park has a walk along the headland which gives you the perfect 180 degree view of the ocean and the whales! You can also just sit on the headland in the mornings with some warm drinks and spot them from there.

WHALE WATCHING
Point Cartwright Lighthouse A walk to Point Cartwright Lighthouse is an easy 1.8km circuit. Pack yourself a morning or afternoon picnic and enjoy the views and the whales!
Point Lookout Stradbroke Island If you haven’t been to Point Lookout at Stradbroke Island to watch the whales then we recommend you add this to your bucket list right now. Enjoy the North Gorge walk around the headland while you spot whales (and turtles) and then indulge in some gelato while you sit amongst the kangaroos at Point Lookout.
Skypoint Observation Deck If you can’t spot a whale when you are 230 metres off the ground, are you even trying? The truth is, you can probably spot a whale from any beach along the coast, but it’s much more fun to do it with a birds eye view!
SWIM WITH THE WHALES Sunreef Mooloolaba offers the very special opportunity to actually swim with humpback whales! Depending on their ability and the conditions, it is generally available for kids over 8 who are good swimmers (and brave) and accompanied by an adult (who also needs to be brave).
WHALE WATCHING CRUISE S
Brisbane Whale Watching Brisbane Whale Watching offers cruises departing Redcliffe offering day and VIP cruises.
Tangalooma Island Resort Tangalooma runs whale watching cruises aboard Australia’s largest dedicated whale watching vessel from Tangalooma Island Resort departing from Brisbane offering day cruises and options to include wild dolphin feedings in your package.

Whales in Paradise Whales in Paradise operates tours from the Gold Coast with day cruises. There are also many whale watching companies that depart from various locations near Brisbane, from the Gold Coast to the Sunshine Coast, that offer some amazing cruises. Most of them (if not all) have a guarantee of a whale sighting which means they may offer a return trip if you are unlucky enough not to spot a whale.

D I D S O M E O N E S AY Y U M C H A ? There are many benefits of enjoying Yum Cha. Not only are you getting to sample a smorgasbord of delicious morsels, but you usually get to see the plates of food before deciding on what to eat, as they are wheeled past on trolleys. Below is a list of some of our favourite Yum Cha restaurants in and around Brisbane. Whilst details are correct at time of printing, we encourage you to check directly with the restaurant prior to visiting to make sure Yum Cha is on offer.
CITY
Bamboo Basket – Southbank and Portside With two convenient locations (Southbank and Portside), Bamboo Basket specialises in Northern and Southern Chinese cuisine and is open seven days a week. If you like a bit of free entertainment while you dine, then you will love the glass viewing kitchen where you can see the chefs roll dough, make noodles and construct dumplings.
Brisbane Phoenix – Brisbane City The striking décor at Brisbane Phoenix (lots of reds, black and gold), has a strong Chinese influence and is sure to impress visitors. Diners partaking in yum cha or enjoying the a la carte menu will be spoiled for choice, with popular dishes including prawn and garlic chive dumplings, steamed pork ribs and chicken feet in black bean sauce. Whilst yum cha is on offer, given the small footprint of the restaurant, trolleys are not utilised.
Golden Palace Chinese Restaurant – Fortitude Valley
Landmark Restaurant – Sunnybank and Inala Now boasting two locations on the southside (Sunnybank Plaza and Inala Plaza), Landmark Restaurant is a popular place to indulge in traditional Yum Cha, with offerings such as steamed buns, chicken feet, a variety of dumplings and other small dim sum dishes. Bottomless cups of Chinese Tea are included upon paying the standard Yum Cha surcharge.
Yum Cha Cuisine – Westfield Garden City For those with large appetites head to Yum Cha Cuisine and take advantage of their ‘all you can eat’ Yum Cha over a 90 minute session, with over 80 dishes to choose from. Included dishes range from steamed dumplings, buns, spring rolls and ribs to delicious desserts such as the popular deep-fried ice-cream, mango pancakes and egg tarts.
NORTH
Aspley Oriental – Aspley
Situated in Chinatown, the Golden Palace Chinese Restaurant offers all day yum cha, serving all the traditional fare specialising in seafood and Chinese cuisine. Some of the dishes on offer include pork spare ribs, fried squid tentacles, Shanghai pork dumplings and mango pancakes.
Aspley Oriental has been serving Brisbanites since the 1990’s and is conveniently located at the Aspley Hypermarket on Brisbane’s northside. Serving the usual Yum Cha dishes, such as prawn dumplings, BBQ pork buns and chicken feet, they also have a variety of live seafood to choose from as well as other popular Asian dishes at reasonable prices.
SOUTH
Landmark Restaurant – Chermside
Haoke Chinese Seafood Restaurant – Sunnybank Hills
Situated at the bustling Westfield Chermside, celebrating Yum Cha at the Landmark Restaurant will have guests excited by the amount of variety whizzing past on the trolley. Dishes include the standard seafood, beef and vegetable offerings, as well as the more ‘interesting’ beef tripe.
As the name suggests, Haoke specialises in seafood dishes, Yum Cha and Cantonese cuisine. All the traditional dishes are on offer with the restaurant open until late, in case you get a case of the munchies late in the evening.
