3. Explore the Southport Spit and the many wonderful activities it has on offer. Start by parking close to the Southport Jetty and throwing a line at this popular fishing spot. Bring the pooch and visit dog-friendly Doug Jennings Park at the northern end for a swim in the calm waters inside the spit and a leisurely picnic lunch. After lunch, stroll or ride along the footpaths to the Seaway Wall to enjoy the views of South Straddie.
1. Pack a picnic and some swimmers and head to Tamborine Mountain for the day. While there, explore the beautiful rainforest walks, waterfalls and lookouts before cooling down with a swim at Cedar Creek Falls and Rock Pools. Enjoy the stunning views and rock pools and then settle in for a picnic at one of the many shaded parkland areas.

Explore lush rainforests, cascading waterfalls, natural wonders and breathtaking panoramic views on a day trip to Springbrook National Park Only 600m from the information centre is Best of All Lookout, which, on a clear day, will reward you with views out to Mt Warning, Byron Bay and Coolangatta. After lunch, walk the Natural Bridge Circuit, which will take you to the Natural Bridge, a stunning natural arched cave with a waterfall cascading through a hole in the top!
2. Rise and shine with the birds (literally!) and make the most of a full day at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. An 8am arrival time means you will be greeted by hundreds of the sanctuary’s famous rainbow lorikeets as they come in for their daily feeding. This part of the park is free to enter, but the rest is too good not to explore at length.
5. Greenmount Beach is the perfect day trip destination with its turquoise waters and northfacing, protected beach. Following your morning on the beach, head to the Coolangatta Surf club’s wide deck for a cool drink and delicious meal. After lunch, work off your meal by doing the headland walk from Greenmount Beach to Rainbow Bay – one of the most superb walks on the Gold Coast. Finish up with a stop in at Yatala Pies on your way home.
6. Tallebudgera Creek is one of the best swimming spots in Australia, and, with its huge range of familyfriendly activities, it makes for a perfect full-day trip from Brisbane. Swim in the shallow, patrolled creek waters, do some fishing, or hire a paddleboard for a few hours. Stroll through Burleigh Head National Park from the north side of Tallebudgera Creek to reach the spectacular view of the mouth of the river from Tumgun Lookout.
8. Currumbin Beach is an exquisite day trip escape for families, offering calm waters that are perfect for kayaking, fishing and SUPing. Take in water views from the many cafes, the Currumbin RSL, or the local Vikings SLC. Make sure you visit Elephant Rock, right on the beach next to the surf club, and climb the steps on his back for sweeping views from Surfers Paradise to Coolangatta.

For the ultimate day out filled with rides, entertainment, waterslides and thrills, plan a day trip to one of the Gold Coast’s many theme parks Visit the dolphins at Seaworld, re-enact a famous movie scene at Movie World, challenge your nerves on a thrill ride at Dreamworld, or cool down on mountainous slides at Whitewater World or Wet’n’Wild.
10. Head out on one of the many bushwalking trails at Green Mountains and Binna Burra. The Binna Burra Rainforest Circuit is only 1.2km long and suitable for children of all ages. For lunch, pack a picnic, or take in the amazing Numinbah Valley views from the Binna Burra Tea House. On weekends, there is a family-friendly activity program offering everything from spotlighting tours and bush-tucker walks to archery and nature crafts.
7. If you love to shop, swim, eat and play all in one day, then head straight to the heart of the Gold Coast with a day trip to Surfers Paradise. Enjoy a morning swim at Main Beach, before wandering across the street to the mecca that is the Cavill Avenue Mall. Peruse the shops, eat at one of the many cafes and restaurants, visit Ripley’s Believe It Or Not, or have a game of tenpin bowling.

1. Drive up to Sunshine Coast Hinterland and visit Maleny Bird World, followed by a stroll through the picturesque Maleny Botanic Gardens. Head into the main street of Maleny, pick a cafe to grab a bite to eat, and then cool off with a swim at Gardners Falls before heading home.
2. Start your day by taking the kids through the dense sub-tropical rainforest at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. Spend some time at their discovery centre, enjoy a coffee at the Mountain View Cafe, or head to their lawn area to enjoy a picnic and play on their fort-style playground.
3. Visit Kondalilla Falls in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland for a morning bushwalk and a swim. Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy your spoils before heading home via the highway with a detour via Aussie World for some afternoon adventures.

8. Wildlife HQ at Woombye is one of the most underrated animal sanctuaries in South East Queensland. It is excellent for families with young children, because it’s not overly-expansive, and an eclectic range of animals makes for an abundance of exciting animal encounters. Take a token photo outside the Big Pineapple before you leave. Drive 12 minutes up the road and enjoy the Ginger Factory, where you can tour the gardens for free, or purchase some tickets to ride the Ginger Factory Train and check out the Gruffalo Trail. This combination of activities is a full-day itinerary that kids of all ages will enjoy.
9. Plan your day trip for a Wednesday or Sunday and head to the famous Eumundi Markets. What you will love about these markets is the sheer number and variety of stalls. There are many food offerings to work your way through, but you could also bring your own food and enjoy them in the leafy surroundings.
