Brisbane Powerhouse is more than just a great building. We’re a home of living art; a warm and welcoming place for people to gather. This season, probably more than any other, the diversity of experiences on offer embraces all of our audiences. In a festival frenzy, we’re opening our doors to Curiocity Brisbane, WOW (Women of the World) Australia 2020, Festival of Tibet and of course, as Brisbane’s home of comedy, Brisbane Comedy Festival. Certainly something for everyone! Plus we’re keeping it real for the kids with a fantastic program of children’s programming including the international work Ann-Droid, as well as ABC Kids favourite Giggle and Hoot.

Bombshell Burlesque as they celebrate their 10th year. Plus there’s the much-loved Banff Mountain Film Festival and Ocean Film Festival World Tours taking you to extraordinary places from a seat in our very own theatre. We create experiences that can’t exist anywhere else; thanks to our community of creators, jokers, doers, dreamers and sometimes, when the mood takes us, rebels. Be part of it! Kris Stewart, Artistic Director

Connecting with local artists and creatives is core to what we do. We’re proud to stage Horizon in partnership with Playlab as well as showcasing

Autumn in Brisbane is the season of opportunity. As the heat of summer makes way for cooler days, it’s time to discover what a truly creative and liveable city we have in Brisbane. And where better to take that journey than at Brisbane Powerhouse. Once again, Brisbane Comedy Festival takes over the venue, attracting leading international and national comedians, as well as many visitors, to our fine city.

I’m so delighted to have one of the free Lord Mayor's Children’s Concerts staged at Brisbane Powerhouse this April.

Brisbane City Council is also supporting the Curiocity Brisbane event, a celebration of creativity, innovation, science, technology and art throughout the city including of course, Council’s home of living art, Brisbane Powerhouse.

Plus it’s the perfect time to gather friends and family and enjoy one of the venue’s restaurants by the river or wander through the Jan Powers Farmers Markets on a Saturday morning. Enjoy! Adrian Schrinner, Lord Mayor

I’m also excited about the return of the annual Festival of Tibet, highlighting just one of the many vibrant communities making their home in Brisbane. As a venue that caters for all ages, there’s certainly no shortage of amazing experiences for children.

The very nature of Brisbane is one of a future-facing city; one that inherently embraces imagination, innovation and invention.

As Guest Creative Director of Curiocity Brisbane, I'm proud of how it shines a light on ‘playable Brisbane’, inspiring people to explore our great city; to truly engage with its creativity, rather than just passively observe. In 2020, Curiocity Brisbane runs over 17 days and returns bigger and bolder, combining science, technology, innovation and the arts. There’s more events, fresh innovations, new creative partnerships and an increasing mix of digital creativity to align with the real world. We will be showcasing our city through interactive, immersive and multi-sensory ‘Curiocities’ positioned at key hubs along the Brisbane River, including Brisbane Powerhouse. Plus there’s World Science Festival Brisbane, WOW (Women of the World) Australia 2020, QODE Brisbane and the Digital Domes in New Farm Park! Ingrained in Brisbane is a rich seam of creativity and curiosity that beckons explorers and creators of all ages – be part of Curiocity Brisbane and experience your city in a whole new way! Kris Stewart Guest Creative Director, curiocitybrisbane.com

spHERes at Brisbane Powerhouse spHERes is an immersive installation that offers visitors the opportunity to physically engage with the topic of equal gender representation within the creative industries through a tactile and experiential medium. Combining beauty and insight, this installation uses data-generated patterns of softly falling smoke-filled bubbles, which gently disintegrate when touched. The pattern of bubbles illustrates the gradual increase in media representation of women across the creative sectors over two decades, with the composed musical soundscape also created from these datasets. The spatial installation welcomes visitors to play with the work and loops the patterns throughout the day. Date Fri 20 Mar–Sun 05 Apr

Curiocity Brisbane has been made possible through close collaboration between the Queensland Government, through Tourism and Events Queensland, and the Brisbane City Council, through Brisbane Marketing.

Are you ready to play? Join an immersive, outdoor game with a smartphone guide to temporarily transform areas outside Brisbane Powerhouse and throughout New Farm into a playground. Adapted on-site with PVI Collective and a team of local artists, deviator activates philosophies around revolution, positioning 'games' as a potential trigger to alter the official narratives of place. As a deviator, your mission is to seek out and activate 15 audio instructions and play as many of the games as possible. Games are scored on difficulty and range from activities such as guerrilla pole dancing and ring-a-ring-o'-roses, to spin the bottle and Twister. Each game encourages players to explore their public space in a new way and deviate from the norm.

Trolls – the terrible people who spend all day insulting strangers. There is a common wisdom about how to deal with trolls; don’t, for goodness sake, encourage these people by replying to them. It’s a good law. And it’s one that David Baddiel has consistently broken. Because David has always seen trolls as hecklers, and if a comedian gets heckled, it is their duty not to ignore the heckler, but to wittily put them down. Over the years, David has spent a lot of time doing this, which has led him to think that there might be a show in it!

Cover Illustration

The Autumn Program Guide cover design for Brisbane Powerhouse is an ode to autumn in Brisbane, and the exciting entertainment the venue hosts. A season framed by beautiful dusky colours provided by the setting sun, the cover design shows Brisbane Powerhouse’s distinctive nature in a collage of industrial artefacts and textures found in and around the venue. Brisbane Comedy Festival and many children’s shows stand strong in the offbeat laughter the mismatched robot exhibits through its smile and various screens. The illustration provides a nod to the parklands and river life that exists beside the venue through the fish like fins and the roses that we can now see blooming in New Farm Park.
