The Chaser Quarterly & The Shovel THE ANTI-EXPERTS GUIDE TO EVERYTHING

The Chaser's Charles Firth and The Shovel's James Schloffel take on the scourge of the modern era: experts and their experty expertise. Did you know that climate change graphs look very different indeed if you turn them upside down? Have you ever noticed the alarming number of celebrities who have been vaccinated and then later died? Did you know that over 99% of people who die in car crashes have eaten sultanas at some point in their life? And yet the government refuses to ban sultanas. Fresh from a national tour playing to sell-out crowds across the country, this show will alarm even the most level-headed. Charles and James take on the topics that others fear to take on for fear of looking like an idiot. And who knows where the night will go? You may end up joining Charles and James's own custom-built religion, and agreeing to tithe 10% of your future income to them. That could be fun!

Heath Franklin's Chopper THE SILENCER

Chopper cordially invites the world to shut the f**k up for a change. Welcome, The Silencer. Panic, terror, stupidity, crisis; they can all form a queue and suck the wrinkles out of Chopper's walnut wallet because he has stopped giving a f*** and is done with suffering fools. Are femi-nazis coming to cut his penis off OR will toxic masculinity give him the prostate cancer he truly deserves? Dole bludgers, climate change, anti-vaxxers, cancel culture – the outrage is deafening. Everyone is crazy, everyone has an opinion, everyone is wrong. Silence! In amongst all this noise and hysteria and angst, and snowflakes and trolls, who will give us a bit of bloody shush? Chopper is here to machete our way through the jungle of bullshit. *@#!KING CLOWN Frank is often referred to as a *@#!KING CLOWN – he chooses to take this as a compliment that reflects his mastery of the ancient art of wrongness. Comedy is like one of those old-fashioned washing machines with the ringers on top. Frank loves to push any topic or tale into the ringers and squeeze as much laughter out as he can. Occasionally he pushes a little enthusiastically and gets his fingers mangled, but that can happen. Rosie Waterland KID CHAMELEON

Born while her parents were on the run from drug dealers, Rosie spent her childhood shapeshifting and course-correcting based on the scenario. Mum’s a sex worker? Adjust. In foster care? Shape-shift. Dad collapses drunk? Course correct, figure it out. When your world keeps changing, you kind of have no choice but to keep changing with it. A household name since her hilarious Bachelor recaps became essential pop culture reading, award-winning podcaster, author and comedian Rosie has sold out theatres and enraptured audiences across the country with her trademark frank, endearingly funny honesty.

Mel Buttle

HANDS ON HEADS

Young Mel was easily distracted and chatty in class, often told to choose more appropriate classmates to sit next to. Ironically, she became a teacher, and then a comedian and a TV host – three careers where it’s always her turn to speak. Mel has had a big year performing stand-up around the country and filming the fourth season of Foxtel’s The Great Australian Bake Off, which she hosts alongside Claire Hooper, Maggie Beer and Matt Moran. Nazeem Hussain HUSSAIN THAT?

After a massive sell-out season across Australia in 2019, Nazeem returns with his sixth solo stand-up show, Hussain That? It’s been a huge few years for Nazeem. You’d have seen his face pop up on Channel 7 in his own sketch series Orange Is The New Brown, or on his Netflix half-hour special, or perhaps you saw him on The Masked Singer when he became BFFs with Lindsay Lohan. Or maybe you took a selfie with Nazeem, literally as he was getting caught fare evading on public transport. What a tight ass. Hughesy is the busiest man in show business, regularly hosting his own TV and radio programs. Dilruk Jayasinha VICTORIOUS LION

Cal Wilson OPEN BOOK

The literal translation of ‘Jayasinha’ is ‘Victorious Lion’. It’s a name befitting of a leader or a king. It’s a name with swagger. But is it suitable for Dilruk?

Part autobiography, part memoir, part factual account of her life, Cal Wilson’s leaving it all on the page. Which is a shame, because she’s meant to be saying it out loud.

Dil’s certainly had a pretty victorious year. He’s performed sell-out shows around the country and the world, including the invite-only Just For Laughs festival in Montreal. He’s been all over your TV screens, on shows like Have You Been Paying Attention? and Utopia. But he still doesn’t feel like the triumphant king of the animal kingdom his name suggests.

No illustrations, some graphic language and a free bookmark. (It’s your ticket – your ticket is the bookmark).

It’s time for Dilruk to work out if he is a Victorious Lion by nature or by name only.

Tom Ballard

GRANDILOQUENT Grandiloquent: adj. pompous or extravagant in language, style, or manner, especially in a way that is intended to impress. Tom Ballard is grandiloquent. He’s got heaps of grandiloquence. He’s hands-down one of Australia’s most grandiloquent comedians. He’s also one of the funniest. In 2019, Tom sold out shows all over the world to critical acclaim and annoyed a lot of Baby Boomers on Facebook. In 2020, he’s back with a brand new hour of jokes about our cooked planet, the stupid Internet and having sex with a witch.

MY NECK, MY BACK

Still reeling from being called ‘ma’am’ while purchasing a packet of hot Cheetos and a Maxibon at the local convenience store, I was reminded that I had to come up with a title and blurb for this year’s show. "Urgh it truly is hard being a woman in comedy" I thought, sucking the Cheetos dust off my ring finger and thumb. Anyway, I wrote most of these jokes in my head whilst sitting at the pub being lectured to about data mining by a guy with a stick 'n' poke tattoo and bad breath. Charity Werk DRAMA QUEEN

Zack Dyer

A FEW BEERS DEEP

Charity is kind. Charity is pure. Charity is an absolute Drama Queen. Exploring love, theatre and growing up gay in Australia, Drama Queen is the quintessential coming-of-age story of a man in a wig, and a queen with a dream.

All the best yarns are told after you’ve knocked the froth off a couple. It’s that goldilocks zone between being sober (boring) and being sloppy drunk (fun but risky). This show was crafted in and celebrates that beautiful state of being.

DaN Rath

STRAWBERRY PALACE

The humiliations started when he ran in the election as an independent on the platform 'Still Upset with Ansett' where policies included refunding family tickets for 1997 trips to Honolulu. This campaign was fought with the same vigour as a class action for asbestos victims. The campaign fell apart in disgrace after a slush fund was used to buy slurpies. After being mocked and scorned by close friends and strangers alike, resentment started to grow. He created an excel spreadsheet of all the times he has been disrespected and assigned them numerical values. Now that they have passed a certain threshold, he has launched a revenge fantasy. Armed with nothing but a hammer and a Bill of Assertive Rights, Dan Rath is teaching society how to treat him.

Lauren Bonner HEARTBREAKER

Ever wonder who did all the graffiti at Brisbane Powerhouse? It was me.

Lauren Bonner has never been dumped, and honestly? It’s made her a monster.

I can’t wait to come back and raise hell in the tropics. I’ve got jokes coming out of my asshole, tales tall enough to ride any roller coaster in the world, Age of Empires cheat codes and a volumetric hologram. The whole experience will be stunning.

In fact, whenever she has faced rejection (rarely), her first assumption is that they must be afraid of falling in love with her. Some would say this is unhealthy, but actually it’s self-care. Comedian, writer, and triple j’s voice on the street, Lauren Bonner is emerging as one of the most exciting new artists on the Australian comedy scene. In her festival debut, Bonner will track her evolution from a self-conscious teen into an ice cold Heartbreaker with plenty of jokes along the way.

ASTONISHING OBSCURITY

Brett Blake

GO HARD OR GO HOME

A truth. A lie. A vendetta. Obsession. Stalking. Inbreeding. Art. My Brilliant Football Brother. My Christmas Island Sister and an actual Prince lip sync dance thing that sent my career careering. As seen in the ABC series Rosehaven and Please Like Me.

Brett Blake is the king of going hard. He has singed off half his mullet while jumping a BMX over a fire pit, broken a world record for weightlifting (forgot to turn the camera on) and been bitten by a shark. Go hard and buy a ticket, don’t go home.

DON'T YOU KNOW WHO I AM?

Three years ago Cam pulled a complete180. He stopped drinking, deciding to become the best version of himself. This isn’t a whimsical tale about any of that, it’s the direct result of it. Clear eyes, full hearts... or some shit. Seen on heaps of cool stuff. Google it.

The quiz show that asks who knows whom, who knows what, because who knows why? Hosted by Josh Earl, the live podcast invites some of Josh’s favourite comedians of the Festival to share a bunch of hilarious stories all under the guise of a quiz.

YOU'RE A GOOD MAN, DR PIRATE

A decade as a pro, well-loved by his peers, one of Australia's top-line bona fide international headliners, Boom-Jacqua-Laka explores the journey that brought him to this very moment. Every idiot has an origin story... This is his.

Gillian had a session with a famous astrologer for her 30th birthday who made a prediction. An insane prophecy was revealed and a ridiculous series of events set in motion that would change her life.

politics in the pub COMEDY SPECIAL

dusty rich

PEST CONTROL

Come hear some festival favourites and special local faces debate some of life’s big questions. Giggles guaranteed.

A collection of ferociously vibrant, large format canvas work, a nuclear-explosive surfboard, a working 6ft bug spray can, Indonesian demon skateboards, a polyurethane skullsteroid, a tiny wooden sailor with microscopic tattoos and a giant 1.8m tall wood panel, luminescent pink cockroach – Pest Control, the latest exhibition from artist and comedian Dusty Rich, is a collection of colour-saturated insanity brought to life.

Politics in the Pub is a free, Q&A style debate which tackles the most pressing contemporary issues for both Australia and the world. Politics in the Pub has previously explored contentious topics such as feminism, the meat industry, the future of transport and the circus of Australian politics.

Dusty's comedic persona is prominent throughout his work. The wild-mind of the South African has found a new home in Brisbane, and we are thrilled to present his acid-coloured musings at Brisbane Powerhouse like two wolves frothing with rabies scaring all the woodland creatures.

Politics can be a bit of a joke sometimes. For Brisbane Comedy Festival this year, Communify and the New Farm Neighbourhood Centre are taking a break from the serious with a very special Politics in the Pub event.

He might be the next Banksy, he might be Banksy. He might not be. But those are 50/50 odds. Do you really want to take that bet?

Around the Campfire BIG FORK THEATRE

Pitch a tent, spray the mozzie repellant and get ready to swap stories Around the Campfire with Big Fork Theatre. There’s a lot of great things about camping, like stargazing, bushwalks, spotting animals and marshmallows on sticks. But what’s the best part? Staying up late sharing stories with your friends of course! Join Big Fork Theatre for an improvised comedy show full of true stories about growing up, silly characters, mayhem, mateship, and of course marshmallows. Gather your family, definitely DO NOT get a babysitter, and enjoy some fun Around the Campfire. “BIG FORK THEATRE IS DEFINITELY BRINGING THE JOY WITH THIS DELIGHTFUL, FAMILY-FRIENDLY OFFERING.” STAGE WHISPERS

This Is Your Trial

A judge, a prosecutor, a defence counsel – and YOU. This Is Your Trial puts audience members on the stand in an improvised comedy courtroom. Top comedians take on the role of lawyers prosecuting and defending charges laid by the family and friends of the accused. The judge presides, but the jury decides. Maybe your kids are too noisy. Maybe your parents are embarrassing. Maybe your best friend is always late. No matter is too petty for this kind of rough justice! A staple at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Act/React is proud to bring this hilarious show to Brisbane for the first time.

Venue + Transport Info Brisbane Powerhouse

119 LAMINGTON ST, NEW FARM QLD 4005

PUBLIC TRANSPORT CityCat: The New Farm Ferry Terminal is located approximately 200m from Brisbane Powerhouse. Bus: The 195 and 196 bus services stop at the end of Brunswick Street at Oxlade Drive, on the East side of New Farm Park. The 199 bus stops at Merthyr Road and Hawthorne Street. Both stops are a short walk from Brisbane Powerhouse. Taxi: We definitely endorse a cheeky taxi or rideshare to give you time to enjoy a glass of wine or a bite to eat at Bar Alto or Mary Mae’s before the show. The taxi zone is located inside the car park beside the Stores Building. PARKING If you’re planning on driving, get here early and give yourself time to find a park! From mid-January to late-February 2020, the Brisbane Powerhouse car park will be closed for refurbishment. During this time, we advise that visiting patrons park in New Farm Park which is accessible via Brunswick Street. If you have a dinner or performance reservation, we encourage you to arrive 40–50 minutes early to give yourself enough time to find a park. Bicycle racks are located outside the Stores Building and Brisbane Powerhouse.

The Fortitude Music Hall 312 BRUNSWICK ST, FORTITUDE VALLEY QLD 4006

PUBLIC TRANSPORT Bus: There are many bus stops located in the Valley, many less than a minute’s walk from the venue. Please search TransLink Journey Planner for more details. Train: Fortitude Valley Train Station is located only 200 metres away, a three-minute stroll and will cater for all train lines in Brisbane including the Gold Coast, Ipswich and Nambour (Sunshine Coast). Taxi: If you’re searching for a taxi you will find taxi ranks spread throughout the Valley to get you home quickly and safely. We are located on a pedestrian mall so the closest of those is located at the top of the Brunswick Street Mall on Ann street. Other locations include Wickham Street outside McWhirters, Brunswick Street North and Brunswick Street South. PARKING The car park for the venue is conveniently located directly under The Fortitude Music Hall, accessible via Warner Street. There are several other parking options close by – The Chinatown Carpark with access from Gipps or Duncan Streets, a short walk across the Chinatown Mall and through the TC Beirne Building straight to The Fortitude Music Hall or McWhirters Carpark, located directly behind the venue, accessed via Warner Street and Ballow Street. Book online for cheaper rates.

The Tivoli

52 COSTIN ST, FORTITUDE VALLEY QLD 4006

PUBLIC TRANSPORT Bus: The closest bus stops are The Old Museum (Bowen Bridge Rd) or the Jubilee Hotel (Saint Pauls Tce at Constance Street). Train: Fortitude Valley station is the closest train station to The Tivoli. Exit onto Brunswick St and turn right, walking away from the Valley Mall. Taxi: Costin St is a one-way street with a loading zone right outside the venue. Rideshare services can be accessed via their respective smartphone apps. Yellow Cabs and Black & White cabs can be booked by calling 13CABS. PARKING There is no on-site parking at The Tivoli. You can find some street parking in the surrounding areas but it’s limited. The closest car park is one street over on King Street, which is free for the first 3 hours and then $10 after that. The RNA Showgrounds Car Park and Valley Metro Secure Car Park are also just around the corner.

Drinking and driving ain't cool. Neither is getting stuck finding a park. THIS COMEDY FESTIVAL, LEAVE THE CAR AT HOME AND TAKE PUBLIC TRANSPORT OR A RIDE SHARE OPTION TO YOUR SHOW.
