Jan Powers Farmers Markets Every Saturday

We’re really excited to be presenting such a jam-packed program this season, and at the heart of it all, our muchloved Brisbane Comedy Festival is back with a bang, this time held during Brisbane’s balmy winter. We’ve got some other changes in the wind too. It’s lovely to write my first and last welcome to a guide, as I finish as Brisbane Powerhouse CEO at the end of June. I’d also like to pay tribute to the amazing work of my friend and colleague, outgoing Artistic Director, Kris Stewart, who has also recently finished with us to head over to QMusic as their new CEO. It seems fitting to have this photograph below of the two of us, taken to commemorate Brisbane Powerhouse’s recently celebrated 21st birthday.

To honour our 21 years we have published Regenerate, a commemorative book that uncovers the story of our great building, almost a century old and literally a time capsule of Brisbane’s history. I encourage you to get your hands on a copy. With Brisbane Powerhouse so close to our hearts, and given we’re holidaying in Australia for the next little while, I encourage folk from across the country to spend their winter in sunny Brisbane with us. Fiona Maxwell Chief Executive Officer Brisbane Powerhouse

2021 has been a moment to reflect for Brisbane Powerhouse, not only on the past 21 years as Brisbane’s home of contemporary arts and culture, but also the history of this extraordinary site on the Brisbane River and the strong connection many of us have for this iconic building. This was certainly evident in the support we received during the unusual times of 2020. Whether you are visiting one of our fine bars and restaurants, attending a show or joining friends and family at the regular markets on-site, Brisbane Powerhouse, thanks to the stories and memories it holds, has secured a place in most Brisbanite’s hearts. I know it has made a mark on mine and I look forward to enjoying the continued success of this much-loved organisation. Image credit: Tara Croser

Brisbane is the envy of the rest of the country at this time of year, with blue skies and crisp evenings making it the perfect time to experience the best of Brisbane Powerhouse’s cultural calendar.

by the world’s best photojournalists; a not-to-be-missed experience. There’s also a superb line-up of music to fire up the senses, including performances from Ben Lee and Brisbane’s much-loved cabaret event, Women in Voice 2021.

Once again, Brisbane Comedy Festival takes over the venue, attracting home-grown heroes and national legends of comedy, and drawing in large crowds. The evocative World Press Photo Exhibition 2021 shines the spotlight on the most compelling and controversial moments captured

For those seeking inspiration, Brisbane Powerhouse’s Writers+Ideas program will host three key appearances with writers including Becky Lucas, Norman Swan and Sarah Wilson sharing insights into their compelling lives and inspiring careers. Plenty of free events are also on offer including the popular children’s art adventure Powerkids and Politics in the Pub. Add in Jan Powers Farmers Markets, showcasing all the best available local food and goodies, and Brisbane Powerhouse is your second home this winter. So whether you’re seeing a performance, soaking up the festival atmosphere or simply enjoying the breathtaking river views, there’s something for everyone to look forward to during this wonderful season at Brisbane Powerhouse. BY A SLIGHTLY ISOLATED DOG

Meet the most delightfully evil man alive — Mr Hyde, a man so evil he drop-kicks a quokka and yells 'shark' at the beach. This mad-cap rendition of Jekyll & Hyde celebrates the darkness within us all. A completely reworked version of Robert Louis Stevenson's novel, into a terrifyingly hilarious theatre-comedy adventure for the 21st century. Jekyll is the man who washes and separates his recycling before putting it out. Meanwhile Hyde is the man who uses the last of the toilet roll and doesn't replace it before leaving the bathroom. Who does that? Who is this mad man?!

A Playlab Theatre Production

Playlab Theatre's multi-award winning production, Blue Bones returns for another season this August.

Based on the true story of two teenagers' romance as it blossoms then warps in the heat of bustling Singapore, Blue Bones is a one-woman show told with incredible honesty by Merlynn Tong. Combining multiple characters, Kung Fu and arcade games; Blue Bones is a whirlwind of love and naivety, violence and courage, with the wreckage felt across the years. Against the backdrop of Singapore with all its beauty, rigidity, and chaos, Blue Bones will enchant, disturb, and perhaps even wake the stories in your bones.

Becky Lucas Acknowledgments: Book Launch Acknowledgments is the debut book from critically acclaimed comedian Becky Lucas. It’s a funny, consoling and very candid collection of stories and essays that highlight the power of saying thank you to the ones you may not have wanted to thank at the time. Something most people can relate to, and if not, you’re probably far too well adjusted for this show. So instead of compulsively checking the same four apps over and over to diminishing results, come and join Becky for a big night of laughs, guests and conversation. Depending on her mood, she might even drink two glasses of white wine and have a small breakdown before winning you back by disclosing a few juicy pieces of goss. In fact, Becky’s so eager to please she’ll even let you check your phones mid show. 18 • IDEAS

Cover Illustration The illustrated cover was created from a love for the building's rich 95-year history. It is a tribute to what the building has endured from its life as a magnificent power station, to its wild 80s-90s derelict decades, to what is now — a destination of artistic performance and culture. Its vibrant colours and drifting energy is captured in the transforming shapes, as the venue often transforms to suit the wide variety of productions it houses. The angular and diamond shapes capture its sharp and flashy nature of class and combined with roughness, a venue that welcomes and includes all who enter.
