POLICE, CRIME & ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR UPDATE 13 - 27 May 2021
CRIME OVERVIEW Crime levels are similar to the last period with 219 crimes reported over the last 2 weeks, which is still around 50% less than reported this time last year. Crime has been spread across the area with similar levels of violent offences recorded. There have been 130 ASB reports generated with the majority of reports identified as street/group
ASB with peak times being patrol during these times each between 21:00 and 23:00 hours. weekend in an attempt to reduce There are now additional police on this number.
REPORTING CRIME The South West security lead for Sainsbury’s approached the BID as staff from his Bristol branches have reported high numbers of crime and ASB through internal systems. This has led to regular collaborative meetings with all store managers, Police, the BID teams and security managers to identify an action plan to reduce the issues. The stores are now linked with other stores in the area through the BCRP radio network and
can identify offenders and report incidents through the associated DISC system. Working closely with the Police has encouraged stores to better report crime, which will then allow police to target prolific offenders reducing crime and bringing the worst of those to justice. The process is being closely monitored to identify key success or failures.
INCREASE IN ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR There has been a recent increase in anti-social behaviour and crime including robberies around the Harbourside area. Officers have been working hard to try and identify and disrupt this behaviour. A new tactic was trialled last week to use the Section 34/35 dispersal order under the anti-social behaviour act. A group of persons believed to be involved in the robberies
were stopped and dispersed on Friday. A breach was witnessed on Saturday and a person was arrested and charged. We are now seeking a Community Protection Warning to keep the person away from the area. The hope is once those involved in criminality realise that they will be banned from the area, causing them to stop offending and causing problems in our city.
NEXT STAGE OF REOPENING Hospitality opened indoors from 17th May (STEP 3), some venues opened straight after midnight. Overall it has been a very positive atmosphere; weather dependent there are lots of people around the city centre and Harbourside. A lot of the outdoor seating areas remain so there is plenty of space and a large choice of venues to visit.
safety at weekends. We also have Police horses and Covid compliance officers on duty. Rules for indoors are pretty much as they were for outside areas - 6 persons in a group or two households. UKHospitality provide a good FAQ page for Step 3 which can be found here.
Operation BRIO is our Night Time Economy plan and officers will be out from Response and Neighbourhood teams providing reassurance and promoting
PROLIFIC SHOPLIFTER The Broadmead Police team recently arrested a prolific shoplifter, who was subsequently charged with three thefts and remanded in custody to court. The male, Darren Edwards, was issued with a 3-year Criminal Behaviour Order banning him from Broadmead and the City
Centre, as well as preventing him from entering any business/ premises from which he is already banned. This came into effect on 07/05/2021. This is a good result and will make it a criminal offence with a possible 6-month custodial sentence if he
breaches. If you see Mr Edwards breaching his conditions please email your local BID team.
