In 2021 the BPF continued to liaise with the press to communicate the value of plastic and the industry’s perspective on key issues, responding to over 70 media enquiries from both national and trade press. This resulted in over 1000 mentions of the BPF across mainstream media, trade press and online news websites, including the Financial Times, the Daily Express, the Guardian, the i, the Independent, the Sunday Times and the Times, as well as appearances on BBC News, ITV News and ITV’s Good Morning Britain. In 2021 the BPF released 36 press releases and statements on a wide variety of topics, including responding to Boris Johnson’s comments about recycling in October, which was covered in the Times. The BPF also published a press release after BPF Director General Philip Law wrote to the Secretary of State for International Trade at the time, Liz Truss, objecting to the end of Tradeshow Access Programme (TAP) grants for exhibitors at foreign tradeshows.

Notable other press releases included the release of the BPF’s Recycling Roadmap, Sustainability Report and Plastics Explained; the world’s first PAS standard to help prevent plastic pellet loss; as well as the launch of a new EPS recycling trial with the North London Waste Authority. In 2022, plans are afoot to build upon our relationship with the press to further embed the BPF as the goto organisation for information and statements about topical issues in the world of plastics.
