Welcome Note Dear Guests, Welcome to this incredible club, a wonderful outpost of polo heritage. Polo has been played in Singapore for 125 years and this club sits comfortably in the established realm of the sport. The modern game as we know it was reborn by British officers in the 19th Century who spread the game from Argentina to New Zealand. This event is testament to that: the A-Z of world polo and a celebration of the history and heritage of its origins. Founded in 1886, by the officers of the King’s Own Regiment, the 1st Battalion, the Club has a long and fascinating history. It is exciting that officers of The British Army are here once again today to play against the current custodians of this great institution. Polo was originally played in the centre of the old Singapore Race Course, now known as Farrer Park. The Singapore Polo Club moved to its first permanent home at Balestier Road in 1914. But this proved unsuitable due to its limited size. With the support from an increased military garrison and financial aid from the Singapore Turf Club, three acres of land were allocated at Mount Pleasant Road and the current site of the Club was established and open for play by 1941. During World War II, the Japanese Imperial Army converted the grounds into a gun emplacement area and later, it was transformed into a squatter’s camp. After the war, it took the efforts and influence of Lord Mountbatten to reestablish the Polo Club. A dedicated polo player himself, his participation along with other royal dignitaries ensured that polo retained its social status among the elite of Singapore. It is a fitting honour that a message from his great nephew, HRH The Prince of Wales, a man who has played at this club, precedes this welcome note. We are delighted to bring The British Polo Day to this esteemed club. We have two great polo matches The Pelham Bell Pottinger Cup between Eton and Harrow and The Land Rover Trophy for The British Army vs Singapore Polo Club. It is an honour to be here and we are extremely grateful to The Club Patron Mr Ammeerali Jumabhoy, The President Mr Leon Chu and his Committee for this wonderful privilege and to our sponsors for making this cultural bridge possible. We hope you all have a great day and that together we raise some funds for the young people of Singapore. As ever,

We are delighted to be sponsoring British Polo Day in Singapore. The qualities of speed, strength and teamwork associated with the world’s oldest team sport are attributes we share at Coutts, one of the world’s oldest private banks. Founded in the UK in 1692, Coutts was one of the early pioneers of private banking. Scottish goldsmith John Campbell moved from Scotland to London and established his goldsmith-‐ banker’s shop at the ‘sign of the three crowns’ in the Strand, within sight of Coutts’ present head office. Over the bank’s 320-‐year history, Coutts has managed the financial affairs of distinguished individuals like Charles Dickens and Frederic Chopin. Our links with Singapore go as far back as the 1870s, customers in this part of the world include several governors of the Straits Settlement, of note were Sir Andrew Clarke who served from 1873 to 1875. Singapore’s Clarke Quay was named after him. They also include Captain Charles Edward Faber, who built the road to Mount Faber, and Sir Nicholas Ridley, father of the Singapore botanical gardens. Some of the statues of Sir Stamford Raffles in Singapore were also built by a Coutts client. Today, Coutts is a dynamic private bank, carrying on a tradition of offering a very personal service at the heart of its investment activities; with wealth management, preservation and growth at the top of the list. We hope you have a great time at the British Polo Day. May the best team win! Paul Davies Vice Chairman, South East Asia Coutts

Rules of Polo 1
The yellow player has the line, and at fair speed the white player would be crossing the line without sufficient safety margin, resulting in a penalty against white.
3
When travelling in the same direction the white player may draw level with yellow and then force him across the line and take possession of the ball without committing a dangerous foul.
5
Two players riding for a ball from opposite directions in the open must both give way to the left and take the ball on their right or offside.
2
Even at a far lesser angle the white player would still be crossing the line if he continues in that direction, and committing a dangerous foul.
4
The white player may move in parallel with the line and play a shot providing he can do so without interfering with the yellow’s mount or causing him to check back. If white would cross the line to the dotted position it would be a foul.
6
When two players are approaching a ball in the open from different directions, the player (white), with the line of the ball on his offside, right hand side, has right of way.

Although the ancient sport of polo began in Persia and China many centuries ago, the British reinvented the modern game in the nineteenth century. Sir Winston Churchill, one of the greatest proponents of the game, once famously said “a polo handicap is a passport to the world and polo is still thriving everywhere it is played, from Argentina to New Zealand. British Polo Day carries on the tradition of the British playing polo against friends in a host of different countries around the world. www.britishpoloday.com

THE SINGAPORE POLO CLUB Founded in 1886, during Singapore’s colonial past, the Club has a long and fascinating history. Set in acres of lush, tropical grounds, the Singapore Polo Club is a world apart from Singapore’s bustling pace yet located just minutes from the heart of the city’s hectic business and commercial centre. The old world, rustic charm of the clubhouse with its open verandah and views of tropical greenery and open spaces provides a relaxing and understated, natural ambience. The main focus of the Club is of course polo and more generally, equestrian sports, but other sports activities and facilities are also well represented. Members can either keep their own polo ponies at the club stables, or alternatively lease ponies from the Club’s own string. Beginners, or those wishing to hone their skills may sign up for polo lessons with the Club’s resident pros. For those interested primarily in horse riding, you can participate in any of the Club’s varied Riding Section programmes and activities including basic riding, competitive dressage as well as show jumping at various levels, either in one to one or group lessons with our qualified riding instructors. You may also choose to enjoy the pleasure of simply hacking along a wide selection of jungle trails that are accessible from the Club.

Eton Old Etonians have played polo all around the world for over a century. Eton’s sporting rivalry with Harrow goes back even further, having begun with the renowned annual cricket fixture at Lords in which Lord Byron among others have played in over the years. Eton has fared well against Harrow in the various British Polo Day events and are looking to continue that success. Eton has produced some fine polo players over the years, typified by Luke Tomlinson, an 8 goal professional and captain of the England team. However, the best known Old Etonian players are probably Princes William and Harry, the latter having played against Prince Rashid of Jordan at the British Polo Day Charity Cup. The Eton team playing today has two Singapore Polo Club members, Alex De Lisle and Henry Brooks. Tristan Phillimore, a member of the Handicap Committee of the Hurlingham Polo Association and keen polo player is also flying out as well as Tom Hudson, Co-Founder of the British Polo Day to make up the team. Backes & Strauss, sponsors of the Eton team in the Middle East, continue their winning association with the Eton team in Singapore.

Harrow Harrow, like Eton, has a rich polo history. Sir Winston Churchill was perhaps the most famous Old Harrovian player, extolling the virtues of polo: “A polo handicap is a passport to the world.” Modern day Old Harrovians such as Jack Kidd and Richard Le Poer have taken his advice and played polo at the highest level internationally. Hugh O’Donnell, the winning Harrow captain at the British Polo Day in the Middle East (pictured) alongside HH Prince Rashid of Jordan, has flown out to play alongside Will Seth Smith and Rupert Lewis. Hunter is the proud sponsor of the Harrow team and will be inviting the five best dressed ladies of the day to divot stomp in a pair of fashionable Hunter boots of their choice.

I am delighted that representatives of Cavalry and Guards Regiments of the British Army will be facing a team from the Singapore Polo Club on the 19th of November in Singapore, and I trust that this fixture will start a new tradition. The Cavalry and Guards Club is a proud home to Officers both past and present of these Regiments and we are fortunate to display many Polo Cups and Trophies, all of which have a celebrated history. It is an immense pleasure for us to celebrate the heritage that links our two institutions and we are always delighted to welcome members from our reciprocal clubs. I look forward to welcoming you to ' 127 ’ Piccadilly where history, tradition, timeless elegance and quiet efficiency, plus that all-important personal touch, are the hallmarks of The Cavalry and Guards Club. I wish both teams the best of luck and I hope for a near run match and the beginning of a closer relationship between our two great Clubs.

THE BRITISH ARMY The Singapore Polo Club was founded in 1886 by the officers of the King’s Own Regiment, the 1st Battalion, and it is fitting that the British Army Polo Team will be playing today against the Singapore Polo Club. The team today features players who have played in British Polo Day Dubai, Abu Dhabi and China. The Team is managed by The Chairman of The Army Polo Association (APOLA) Colonel Simon Ledger. We are very lucky to have him here today as the voice of The British Polo Day. He brings with him a wealth of international calling experience from the high-goal in Sotogrande to the frontier of polo in Beijing. He will be joined by The Singapore Polo Club’s very own Nick Hadow. We welcome them both and look forward to their dulcet tones as we enjoy this historic occasion. The team is sponsored by Land Rover, a fitting partnership as many Land Rovers have been adapted for military service over the years.

History of the Game Polo is perhaps the oldest game in the world – having been played over 2500 years ago - and is truly international. The name polo is said to have been derived from the Tibetan word “pulu”, meaning ball.
Ancient Polo In 600 BC the first recorded game of polo took place between the Turkomans and Persians. The Turkomans won. Polo began as a training game for cavalry units, usually the king’s guard or other elite troops. To the warlike tribesmen, who played it with as many as 100 to a side, it was a miniature battle. Persian literature and art give us the richest accounts of polo in antiquity. Ferdowsi, the famed poet-historian, gives a number of accounts of royal polo tournaments in his 9th century epic, Shahnameh (the Epic of Kings). In the earliest account, Ferdowsi romanticizes an international match between Turanian force and the followers of Siyâvash, a legendary prince from the earliest centuries of the Empire. The game spread into North India. In fact Sultan Qutb-ud-din Aibak, the first Muslim Emperor of North India, actually died accidentally in 1210 playing polo.
From Persia, in medieval times polo spread to the Byzantines (who called it tzykanion), and after the Muslim conquests to the Ayyubid and Mameluke dynasties of Egypt and the Levant, whose elites favored it above all other sports. Notable sultans such as Saladin and Baybars were known to play it and encourage it in their court. Polo sticks were features on the Mameluke precursor to modern day playing cards. Polo was passed from Persia to other parts of Asia including the Indian subcontinent and China, where it was very popular during the Tang Dynasty and frequently depicted in paintings and statues. The Moguls were largely responsible for taking the game from Persia to the east and by the 16th century the Emperor Babur had established it in India. Polo was revived in Japan by the 8th Shogun, Tokugawa Yoshimune (1684-1751) and was played until early 20th century. It was the favourite sport of the last Shogun who surrendered power to the Emperor in 1868.

Modern Polo The modern game of polo, though formalized and popularized by the British, is derived from Manipur (now a state in India) when British tea planters discovered the game in Manipur (Munipoor) on the Burmese border with India and established the first polo club in the world at Silchar, west of Manipur in 1862. In 1869, Edward “Chicken” Hartopp, 10th Hussars, read an account of the game in The Field, while stationed at Aldershot, and, with brother officers, organised the first game known then as “hockey on horseback”- on a hastily-rolled Hounslow Heath against The 9th Lancers. The 1st Life Guards and the Royal Horse Guards were quick to follow suit on grounds at Hounslow and in Richmond Park; and then on a small ground near Earl’s Court known as Lillie Bridge. The first polo club in England was Monmouthshire, founded by Capt. Francis “Tip” Herbert, 7th
Lancers, at his brother’s seat, Clytha Park, near Abergavenny in 1872. In 1875, the first official match in Argentina took place on 3rd September, where the game had been taken by English and Irish engineers and ranchers.

Join the british polo day around the world As British Cavalry Officers travelled the four corners of the earth, they learnt to play and love polo, spreading the game from Argentina to Australia. Polo is thriving everywhere it is played. British Polo Day celebrates the heritage of the game in each country, reviving some of the old rivalries whilst bridging cultures, in a quintessentially British Day.

YBI members assist under-served young entrepreneurs with a combination of training, access to capital, mentoring and other business development services. They adapt this common approach to their local context, working in partnership with governments, businesses and multilateral and civil society organisations. Under The Prince of Wales’s leadership YBI has grown into 34 countries, including Singapore, and has helped over 100,000 young people around the World to create their own business and generate employment.
Youth Business Singapore (YBS) In March 2006, the Heartware Network was appointed by Youth Business International to launch a pilot business programme in Singapore. YBS is an incubated programme under Heartware, whose strengths are in volunteer management, networking and established reputation with the Ministry of Education in fostering partnerships with different schools. Heartware also provides office space and organizational expertise to YBS. Investment Opportunities In Asia
Asia Prospects A development and asset management company established in 2008, specialising in property investment opportunities in emerging markets. Asia Prospects is a grassroots investment vehicle that delivers profits for investors by using intimate knowledge of emerging property markets in South East Asia, in particular Lombok, the Gili Islands, Sumbawa, Flores and Sri Lanka. Asia Prospects was founded by digital marketing entrepreneur Adam Murray in 2008. Having identified an opportunity to show investors very real returns, he pooled a group of property experts from Pacific Investments, CBRE, Savills, as well as financial investors from leading investment banks and senior partners at Allen & Overy, to start a movement that by 2011 has become a leading international investment firm in the Indonesian Archipelago. Asia Prospects currently has investment opportunities in north and south Lombok, Gili Trawangan and Moyo Island.
