Dear Guests, British Polo Day is now well established in The UK, The Middle East, China, Singapore, India, Thailand, France and Germany. A special niche has been forged that is far more than just a polo day, it is a cultural bridge built on the universal language of the horse. These shared values create a platform for understanding, dialogue and the development of relationships. British Polo Day Mexico represents the inaugural leg in The Americas and we are delighted to be working in partnership with the de Alba family – owners of Balvanera Polo & Country Club. This first year has been built on diplomatic, cultural, philanthropic and political links that have enjoyed the full support of The British Embassy in Mexico City as well as The Mexican Embassy in London. British/Mexican business relations have a fascinating heritage and this was evident in conversations with His Excellency Eduardo Medina Mora (The Mexican Ambassador to the UK), who possessed a remarkable knowledge of the shared history of what is now The American British Cowdray Medical Centre. The Viscount Cowdray was kind enough to send his endorsement of British Polo Day and it is a pleasure to be raising funds for what is now a state-of-the-art modern hospital leading the way in terms of treatment & research. It is fitting that rekindling the past and establishing new ties should take place in Querétaro, as Mexican’s first declared their independence in the town and the state now boasts a thriving economy. We wish you an enjoyable day in this vibrant location. The Committee of British Polo Day Mexico

British Polo Day
It is a great pleasure to welcome the British Polo Day to Mexico. This is a great opportunity to share the vitality of our heritage with our Mexican friends -with whom we share a long and cordial history and to show another side of modern Britain and what it can offer to Mexico. Sport has connected both our countries over the centuries. It is well accepted that the miners who came from Cornwall in South-West England introduced the modern game of football to Mexico in the 19th century. Those same miners also started the 'Polo Club de Pachuca' at around the same time. London 2012 this summer was perhaps the strongest expression yet of the power of sport to unite cultures. It also offered the world a chance to take a fresh look at my country. In advance of the Olympics and in recognition of the Diamond Jubilee of HM Queen Elizabeth II, my government introduced the ‘GREAT Britain’ Campaign to showcase what makes Britain proud. This highlighted Britain's continuing cultural heritage, its tradition of quality and leadership in technology and innovation. British Polo Day has celebrated events in more than 10 different countries. I am particularly pleased that Mexico has been chosen as the first venue in the Americas. This decision reflects the opportunity and dynamism that exists in this country and which is showing itself in its increasingly strong economic performance. This is also a wonderful opportunity to view a sport, Polo, which has a long tradition across the world, including in Mexico. The business relationship between the UK and Mexico is a flourishing one, attracting more Mexican investors to the UK every year and vice versa. We are seeing increasing British sales in Mexico, particularly in the luxury goods sector, where British brands benefit from their heritage appeal and overall design and quality. We are optimistic that British Polo Day will give a strong push to the knowledge and interest in British goods and the opportunities for both countries. I would like to thank all of our Mexican and British friends who have made this event possible. I hope that each of you will make new contacts, strengthen existing bonds and refresh relations to take forward an even closer relationship between us in the future. With best wishes,
Judith Macgregor, LVO CMG

BA LVA NE RA PO L O & COU NT RY C LUB Balvanera was one of the pioneer polo clubs in Mexico, which gave it - from its origins - a stamp of distinction and unique lifestyle. It quickly became recognized nationally and internationally for hosting the 22 goal Mexican Open in which the most talented polo players participated - the Gracida brothers, Antonio Herrera, Ernesto Trotz and Gonzalo Pieres Sr among others. It´s success on polo and great infrastructure led to the development of what is now the most important equestrian center in the country. For the past 20 years Balvanera has hosted the principle show jumping events in Mexico. The combination of both polo and show jumping has given Balvanera a special position in the Mexican equine community. Balvanera´s mission was to create spaces and allow people to enjoy them by developing outdoor sports in a natural and exciting environment. British Polo Day’s involvement is an exciting extension of these long-held ambitions. “British Polo Day have chosen Mexico as their inaugural event in The Americas, a testament to the increasing economic confidence and cultural potential within the country. This international exposure for The State of Querétaro and Balvanera Polo & Country Club is immensely positive. I look forward to lasting and improving benefits in the years ahead for this link between Britain and Mexico” Imelda de Alba

ROXTONS FIELD SPORTS The UK’s premier provider of worldwide shooting and fishing, Roxtons Field Sports has been providing first class sporting opportunities for corporate groups, private parties and individuals around the world for decades. Their ‘credo’ is to provide the best possible chance of sporting excellence – which they most definitely do. On top of that, shooting permits, gun importation, transfers, accommodation, ammunition, entertainment for wives, kennels for dogs – are all taken care of on your behalf. In fact, anything that makes your trip run smoothly and to your highest expectation – Roxtons provided a concierge service before the term was even invented. Aside from its amazing portfolio of global fishing and shooting properties and estates, first-hand knowledge and highest levels of personal service, it runs the world's largest and longest running 'roving syndicate', an informal club that gives individuals access to numerous grouse, partridge or pheasant days around the world. Roxtons has exclusive access to several of the world’s premier shoots and private estates in the UK, Spain, Argentina, Africa, Morocco and Eastern Europe.

It was the first company to offer Atlantic salmon fishing on the Varzuga River in Russia’s Kola Peninsula and more recently pioneered salt water fishing in Cuba. Today, the Roxtons fishing portfolio extends to the four points of the globe including Alaska, New Zealand, Russia and Argentina. Whether it be an overseas group wishing to spend several days shooting as part of a tour, corporate entertainment, or a private party of family and friends, each and every day is just as important to them as it is to their clients. From the background organisation, to personally attending every day, they love their sport and are proud of the job they do. British Polo Day is proud to be associated with Roxtons Field Sports. Rules of Polo 1
The red player has the line, and at fair speed the grey player would be crossing the line without sufficient safety margin, resulting in a penalty against grey.
3
When travelling in the same direction the grey player may draw level with and then force him across the line and take possession of the ball without committing a dangerous foul.
5
Two players riding for a ball from opposite directions in the open must both give way to the left and take the ball on their right or offside.
2
Even at a far lesser angle the grey player would still be crossing the line if he continues in that direction, and committing a dangerous foul.
4
The grey player may move in parallel with the line and play a shot providing he can do so without interfering with the white’s mount or causing him to check back. If grey would cross the line to the dotted position it would be a foul.
6
When two players are approaching a ball in the open from different directions, the player (red), with the line of the ball on his offside, right hand side, has right of way.

While an Old Etonian Polo Team has played at Guards Polo Club against the Old Harrovians for the past 22 years, Eton polo teams have only played sporadically abroad. That was until the British Polo Day was established in Dubai five years ago, where the same Eton v Harrow fixture was replicated, and since then they have played all over the World. Eton’s position in the British polo landscape is unrivalled. David Woodd is the current Chairman of The HPA (the governing body for polo in the UK, Ireland and many other countries throughout the world), Luke Tomlinson is the best British player and Princes William and Harry continue to ensure remarkable outcomes for their Charitable interests through their longstanding love of the game. Indeed this is just a continuation of how it has been for over a century. As the New York Times reported in 1910, the “Invasion of Old Etonians for the International Cup pleases Americans”. Although the 1910 OE team featured some Olympic medalists from the 1908 London Olympics, today’s touring teams are equally excited to represent their school and the British Polo Day committee is proud to let the tradition thrive.

The two most significant polo areas in Mexico are Distrito Federal (based around Tecamac Polo Club just outside Mexico City) and The State of QuerĂŠtaro (shared between the two polo Clubs Balvanera and El Marques). There is no Pony Club system in Mexico, so these three Clubs produce the majority of players that go on to represent the national team. After a lull in recent years, Mexican polo is once again growing strongly as a result of a new crop emerging from long established polo families. The next generation of players are being exposed to an increasingly competitive domestic circuit as well as developing their skills in England, The US and Argentina. The Young Mexico team playing together today is a 4-goal team and there is every sign to suggest that this will be an 8-goal team in 2013 and a 12-goal team by 2014/15. The aspiration for all of these players is to form the main Mexican team in the years ahead and to represent their country around the world.
37 Although the ancient sport of polo began in Persia and China many centuries ago, the British reinvented the modern game in the nineteenth century. Sir Winston Churchill, one of the greatest proponents of the game, once famously said “a polo handicap is a passport to the world and polo is still thriving everywhere it is played, from Argentina to New Zealand. British Polo Day carries on the tradition of the British playing polo against friends in a host of different countries around the world.

Polo is rare in that men & women compete off their given handicap on what is effectively an even footing. British Ladies are world leaders in an area of the sport that continues to flourish as a stand-alone offering. Ladies polo in Britain combines the best traditions of amateur competition with a core group of professional players that hone their skills at the highest levels of the domestic game The staggering “grass roots” operation that is Pony Club Polo, the willingness of horse loving families to encourage both sons & daughters to pick up a stick and an increasing focus on development from The Hurlingham Polo Association (the governing body for polo in the UK) represent the triple lock that has enabled British Ladies to succeed in all areas of the game.

The international profile of Ladies polo continues to rise year-on-year but two countries have yet to fully emerge in this field to match their stature in the modern era. The undisputed greatest polo nation on earth Argentina and the Patron led high-goal hub that is The USA. In the event that a version of the British “triple lock” can be found (in the case of Argentina, 10-goal players getting behind their daughters would certainly be the most likely place to start) there is no reason why the gap should not close when the next generation of players come into their own. The Commonwealth and European countries need to produce more standalone talent and the sheer pace, scale and ambition of polo’s development in China, may see a formidable player emerge as a result. The Rest of the World team is therefore an ongoing opportunity to showcase the Ladies game at the highest level possible and to act as a beacon for younger players with handicaps on the ascent.

In countries all over the world, polo has a long history of raising significant funding for worthy causes. Wherever possible, British Polo Day is entirely committed to bringing to bear the full weight of our Partners, network and creative talent to this end. In partnership with the host Club in each case, British Polo Day divides the fundraising proceeds from charity auctions and raffles that are held at any event between local & British Charities. In so doing, the polo ties between two nations are reinforced further through shared philanthropic aims. In light of the Anglo-Mexican roots of The American British Cowdray Medical Centre – the preeminent hi-tech state of-the-art research and treatment hospital in Mexico – Fundación ABC has been chosen alongside Amiges de Querétaro – a Charity dedicated to serving the interest of women from the town – as the home beneficiaries. Due to it’s status as a world-leading cancer centre – specialising in cancer diagnosis, treatment, research and education – predominantly on behalf of female patients, The Royal Marsden Hospital was selected by the British Polo Day Mexico Committee as a worthy British embodiment of the interests pursued by both Mexican Charities. Today’s Silent Auction lots have been kindly provided by MexJets & Quintessentially Mexico. British Polo Day and Balvanera would urge guests to give generously throughout the day, with the aim of matching the $38,000 USD recently raised by members & guests at British Polo Day Singapore.

The mission of the ABC Fundación is to support and promote the ABC Medical Center by attracting philanthropic community resources to apply to projects that contribute to the care of our patients and the progress of medicine in Mexico. “Sir Weetman Dickinson Pearson funded various philanthropic activities in Mexico including, in 1923, a sanatorium in Mexico City. Since then the Cowdray Sanatorium has developed into a state-of-the-art modern hospital which provides excellent treatment and research and which today’s British Polo Day is supporting. I feel sure my great grandfather would be surprised not only by the reputation of the American British Cowdray hospital but also that the sport which his son started in a very small way at his estate in England, has seen the Cowdray name become synonymous with the sport of polo. I am delighted to endorse the efforts of British Polo Day.”

The Royal Marsden is a world-leading cancer centre, providing treatment and care for more than 40,000 cancer patients every year. It is also at the forefront of cancer research. Its work influences how all cancer patients are treated and cared for, not just in its own hospitals but all over the world. The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity sustains this pioneering work and – thanks to the generosity of our supporters – is able to help The Royal Marsden continue to push boundaries and raise standards of excellence. In 2011, TRH The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited the hospital to open the new Oak Centre for Children and Young People. This £18 million centre for young cancer patients was entirely funded through charitable donations. The current fundraising project is targeted at raising £9.5 million in order to buy two new MRI scanners. This initiative will ensure that The Royal Marsden remains at the forefront of cancer diagnostic imaging. When people support us, they help everyone who benefits from the work of The Royal Marsden. Scientists searching for cures. Doctors who depend on the latest cancer treatments and technologies. And, of course, cancer patients and their families. Together, we can keep making life better for people with cancer and keep striving towards a future without it.

HISTORY OF THE GAME Polo is perhaps the oldest game in the world – having been played over 2500 years ago - and is truly international. The name polo is said to have been derived from the Tibetan word “pulu”, meaning ball.
ANCIENT POLO In 600 BC the first recorded game of polo took place between the Turkomans and Persians. The Turkomans won. Polo began as a training game for cavalry units, usually the king’s guard or other elite troops. To the warlike tribesmen, who played it with as many as 100 to a side, it was a miniature battle. Persian literature and art give us the richest accounts of polo in antiquity. Ferdowsi, the famed poet-historian, gives a number of accounts of royal polo tournaments in his 9th century epic, Shahnameh (the Epic of Kings). In the earliest account, Ferdowsi romanticizes an international match between Turanian force and the followers of Siyâvash, a legendary prince from the earliest centuries of the Empire. The game spread into North India. In fact Sultan Qutb-ud-din Aibak, the first Muslim Emperor of North India, actually died
accidentally in 1210 playing polo. From Persia, in medieval times polo spread to the Byzantines (who called it tzykanion), and after the Muslim conquests to the Ayyubid and Mameluke dynasties of Egypt and the Levant, whose elites favored it above all other sports. Notable sultans such as Saladin and Baybars were known to play it and encourage it in their court. Polo sticks were features on the Mameluke precursor to modern day playing cards. Polo was passed from Persia to other parts of Asia including the Indian subcontinent and China, where it was very popular during the Tang Dynasty and frequently depicted in paintings and statues. The Moguls were largely responsible for taking the game from Persia to the east and by the 16th century the Emperor Babur had established it in India. Polo was revived in Japan by the 8th Shogun, Tokugawa Yoshimune (1684-1751) and was played until early 20th century. It was the favourite sport of the last Shogun who surrendered power to the Emperor in 1868.

MODERN POLO The modern game of polo, though formalized and popularized by the British, is derived from Manipur (now a state in India) when British tea planters discovered the game in Manipur (Munipoor) on the Burmese border with India and established the first polo club in the world at Silchar, west of Manipur in 1862 In 1869, Edward “Chicken” Hartopp, 10th Hussars, read an account of the game in The Field, while stationed at Aldershot, and, with brother officers, organised the first game - known then as “hockey on horseback”- on a hastily-rolled Hounslow Heath against The 9th Lancers. The 1st Life Guards and the Royal Horse Guards were quick to follow suit on grounds at Hounslow and in Richmond Park; and then on a small ground near Earl’s Court known as Lillie Bridge. The first polo club in England was
Monmouthshire, founded by Capt. Francis “Tip” Herbert, 7th Lancers, at his brother’s seat, Clytha Park, near Abergavenny in 1872. In 1875, the first official match in Argentina took place on 3rd September, where the game had been taken by English and Irish engineers and ranchers.
