British Polo Day Germany 2013 presented by
5
Welcome to the British Polo Day Germany, presented by Land Rover. We are delighted to be returning to the Wallerstein Polo Club in the heart of Bavaria at the home of Prince Carl-Eugen zu Oettingen-Wallerstein. The history of the Princes of Oettingen-Wallerstein dates back almost 900 years and the family stems from one of the oldest noble lineages in Germany. British Polo Day Germany is proud to celebrate the heritage and tradition of polo in the serene setting of the Wallerstein Castle. Prince Carl-Eugen and his family have become great patrons of polo, playing in Thailand, Jodhpur, Dubai and in Great Britain among other locations. They have also pioneered the Girls Only Polo Cup with Princess Anna being the driving force. It is in recognition of this that the Land Rover Cup this year features a Girls Only team, with Princess Anna being joined by some of the top female players from Great Britain. The second match, the Hackett Trophy, showcases the British Exiles team. Comprising of four pillars of the British polo playing community, the British Exiles are exponents of the decades old tradition of touring amateur teams. These British teams will play against two Wallerstein Polo teams in what will be a thrilling afternoon of polo. As with all British Polo Days, we hope that guests will enjoy the authentic experience of our host country and revel in our historic surroundings. As ever, we are indebted to all our partners, many of whom are of British origin, but have very strong ties with Germany. We hope that these ties will strengthen as a result of the relationships developed over this weekend. We hope that you have a great time!

HOUSE OF OETTINGEN-WALLERSTEIN The Wallerstein Polo Club is located in Bavaria at the Estate of the Princes of Wallerstein. A splendid and forceful place, the club eminates a soft plenitude. They welcome polo players, sports enthusiasts, horse lovers and friends from all around the world to have their share of the splendour of Schloss Wallerstein and their highly acclaimed horses. Since the Fifthteenth Century the residence has been serving as the seat of the Princely House of Wallerstein and nowadays is the private domicile of the family. The Princes’ history is about 900 years old and counts to the oldest existing high nobility in Europe. Polo is such an integral part of the fabric at Wallerstein that it is easy to forget that Prince Carl & Princess Anna only began imbuing their historic ancestral home with the vibrancy of this new element five years ago. This is partly enabled by the fact that the royal house of Wallerstein has been closely involved with equestrian sport for hundreds of years, but more to do with the family’s ever growing passion and enthusiasm for all things polo related. Prince Carl & Princess Anna have embraced wholeheartedly an attitude of spirited competition towards the game itself. Hosting alongside the field, international players and guests share the family’s huge generosity in such timeless surroundings. This year Wallerstein Polo Club is hosting the Bavarian Summer Challenge and the British Polo Day. Each polo tournament offers an exciting day full of wonderful moments, magnificent horses and rousing game scenes.

Rules of Polo 1
The grey player has the line and at fair speed the red player would be crossing the line without sufficient safety margin, resulting in a penalty against white.
3
When travelling in the same direction, the red player may draw level with grey and then force him across the line and take possession of the ball without committing a dangerous foul.
5
Two players riding for a ball from opposite directions in the open must both give way to the left and take the ball on their right or offside.
2
Even at a far lesser angle, the red player would still be crossing the line if he continues in that direction and committing a dangerous foul.
4
The red player may move in parallel with the line and play a shot providing he can do so without interfering with the grey’s mount or causing him to check back. If red would cross the line to the dotted position it would be a foul.
6
When two players are approaching a ball in the open from different directions, the red player with the line of the ball on his right or offside has right of way.

WALLERSTEIN I The House of Wallerstein has a century old equine history. The Princes’ Eugen and later his son Prince Carl-Friedrich significantly influenced horse racing in their position as President of the International Club Baden (1985 -1991). The late Princess Delia passionately bred horses in her nineties, whilst her grandson Prince Carl-Eugen and his wife Princess Anna founded the Wallerstein Polo Club promoting the sport across the globe. Imelda and JJ de Alba are from the host family of British Polo Day Mexico and their home club Balvanera introduced the first all ladies match to Mexico last November. Having played since she was 11 years old, Imelda met Nina Clarkin in 2002 and has played a full English season most years ever since. Chris started playing ten years ago when he moved to England. He lives with his wife and two boys near Stonehenge and although from beautiful Southern Germany much enjoys living in the English countryside. He inherited his fascination with horses from his grandfather who was in the army, and it has grown through learning about polo and from friends in Argentina. 1. Mr Nicky Sen

GIRLS ONLY The Girls Only tournament was initiated by Anna, Princess of Oettingen-Wallerstein, in 2009. Since then, the Girls Only Polo Cup has taken place every year on the grounds of Wallerstein Castle, now with 12 nations participating in the tournament. Polo publications refer to the Girls Only Polo Cup as a milestone“ and annual highlight“ – and by far the most exclusive event that ladies‘ polo has to offer in Germany. Also on a global scale, the Girls Only Polo Cup and its uniquely beautiful setting sets high standards and is unmatched anywhere else. Christine started playing polo in England over 10 years ago and regularly plays low goal in England, trying to get some polo in sunny weather during the winter months in Argentina. Clare Milford-Haven has played competitively on all levels for the past 12 years, competing in the UK, USA, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden, Italy, South Africa, India, New Zealand, Australia, Dubai, Argentina and Chile. She played in the England team in Mexico eleven years ago and again in 2010, when an all female team won bronze in the FIP European Championships held in Austria.

Although the ancient sport of polo began in Persia and China many centuries ago, the British reinvented the modern game in the Nineteenth Century. Sir Winston Churchill, one of the greatest proponents of the game, once famously said “a polo handicap is a passport to the world and polo is still thriving everywhere it is played, from Argentina to New Zealand. British Polo Day carries on the tradition of the British playing polo against friends in a host of different countries around the world.

The late Princess Delia passionately bred horses in her nineties, whilst her grandson Prince Carl-Eugen and his wife Princess Anna founded the Wallerstein Polo Club, promoting the sport across the globe. “More passionate than talented” is Carl-Eugen’s slogan concerning his polo past time. Although his family has a century old equine history, he only started riding & polo six years ago. He enjoys playing as team with his wife and daughter, his dream being to put up 100% Wallerstein family team with their younger children in a not to distant future. Carl-Eugen loves discovering countries by playing polo all over the world. Yoanna has been riding since age 6. She discovered the exciting and challenging sport polo through her parents, Princess Anna & Prince Carl-Eugen, in 2009 at the polo club Wallerstein. She is an enthusiastic polo player who has played in Thailand, Argentina, India, and Europe.

History of the Game Polo is perhaps the oldest game in the world – having been played over 2500 years ago - and is truly international. The name polo is said to have been derived from the Tibetan word “pulu”, meaning ball.
Ancient Polo
I
n 600 BC the first recorded game of polo took place between the Turkomans and Persians. The Turkomans won. Polo began as a training game for cavalry units, usually the king’s guard or other elite troops. To the warlike tribesmen, who played it with as many as 100 to a side, it was a miniature battle. Persian literature and art give us the richest accounts of polo in antiquity. Ferdowsi, the famed poet-historian, gives a number of accounts of royal polo tournaments in his 9th century epic, Shahnameh (the Epic of Kings). In the earliest account, Ferdowsi romanticizes an international match between Turanian force and the followers of Siyâvash, a legendary prince from the earliest centuries of the Empire. The game spread into North India. In fact Sultan Qutb-ud-din Aibak, the first Muslim Emperor of North India, actually died accidentally in 1210 playing polo. From Persia, in medieval times polo spread to the Byzantines (who called it tzykanion), and

Modern Polo after the Muslim conquests to the Ayyubid and Mameluke dynasties of Egypt and the Levant, whose elites favored it above all other sports. Notable sultans such as Saladin and Baybars were known to play it and encourage it in their court. Polo sticks were features on the Mameluke precursor to modern day playing cards. Polo was passed from Persia to other parts of Asia including the Indian subcontinent and China, where it was very popular during the Tang Dynasty and frequently depicted in paintings and statues. The Moguls were largely responsible for taking the game from Persia to the east and by the 16th century the Emperor Babur had established it in India. Polo was revived in Japan by the 8th Shogun, Tokugawa Yoshimune (1684-1751) and was played until early 20th century. It was the favourite sport of the last Shogun who surrendered power to the Emperor in 1868.
T
he modern game of polo, though formalized and popularized by the British, is derived from Manipur (now a state in India) when British tea planters discovered the game in Manipur (Munipoor) on the Burmese border with India and eåstablished the first polo club in the world at Silchar, west of Manipur in 1862. In 1869, Edward “Chicken” Hartopp, 10th Hussars, read an account of the game in The Field, while stationed at Aldershot, and, with brother officers, organised the first game known then as “hockey on horseback”- on a hastily-rolled Hounslow Heath against The 9th Lancers. The 1st Life Guards and the Royal Horse Guards were quick to follow suit on grounds at Hounslow and in Richmond Park; and then on a small ground near Earl’s Court known as Lillie Bridge. The first polo club in England was Monmouthshire, founded by Capt. Francis “Tip” Herbert, 7th Lancers, at his brother’s seat, Clytha Park, near Abergavenny in 1872.
In 1875, the first official match in Argentina took place on 3rd September, where the game had been taken by English and Irish engineers and ranchers.
