Dear Guests, Welcome to British Polo Day Singapore, presented by Land Rover. We are extremely grateful to return once again to this incredible Club, a wonderful outpost of polo heritage. The modern game as we know it was reborn by British officers in the 19th Century who spread the game globally. The inaugural British Polo Day Singapore in 2011 commemorated the founding of the club 125 years prior in 1886 when the officers of the 1st Battalion, King’s Own Regiment first played here. It was therefore fitting that the match featured the British Army Polo Team who ended up victorious. We are delighted once again to have the Chairman of The Army Polo Association, Col Simon Ledger, commentating on the matches which this year feature Cambridge and the British Exiles as the touring teams. The aim of a British Polo Day is to continue the tradition of playing high quality amateur polo against friends in host countries, whilst also acting as a platform for Britain around the world. We are proud to partner with some of the best companies and brands, including Land Rover, Hackett, Savills, Charles Russell, The Duxton, Blue Label, The Grosvenor Stationary Company, Amouage, Abercrombie & Kent, Zaeem Jamal, Ettinger, 3rd Home, Justerini & Brookes, Bacchanalia, East Imperial, Billionaire and Taittinger. It is an honour to be here again and we thank Club President Mr. Iqbal Jumabhoy and the Committee for this privilege.

Although the ancient sport of polo began in Persia and China many centuries ago, the British reinvented the modern game in the Nineteenth Cventury. Sir Winston Churchill, one of the greatest proponents of the game, once famously said “a polo handicap is a passport to the world and polo is still thriving everywhere it is played, from Argentina to New Zealand. British Polo Day carries on the tradition of the British playing polo against friends in a host of different countries around the world.

12 September 2013 BRITISH POLO DAY I am delighted that British Polo Day will be held, once again, at the Singapore Polo Club on 28 September 2013. In just a few short years BPD has evolved into a fantastic platform for promoting some of the very best of Britain’s luxury brands. At the same time it celebrates the global reach of a sport that, for many, is uniquely associated with Britain and our heritage. This fusion of history and tradition with the cutting edge design and innovation necessary to compete and win in today’s global economy is at the heart of both the government’s “Britain is GREAT” campaign and our wider commitment to doing all we can to support British business, large and small, wherever we can. BPD itself, and the success it has achieved around the world, shows what hard work, vision, enterprise and drive can do. It is a pleasure to be able to support their efforts once again here in Singapore. I wish the teams who will compete on the day all the best, and I am sure it will be another spectacular experience for all who are lucky enough to be there.

The Singapore polo club Founded in 1886, during Singapore’s colonial past, the Club has a long and fascinating history. Set in acres of lush, tropical grounds, the Singapore Polo Club is a world apart from Singapore’s bustling pace yet located just minutes from the heart of the city’s hectic business and commercial centre. The old world, rustic charm of the clubhouse with its open veranda and views of tropical greenery and open spaces provides a relaxing and understated, natural ambience. The main focus of the Club is of course polo and more generally, equestrian sports, but other sports activities and facilities are also well represented. Members can either keep their own polo ponies at the club stables, or alternatively lease ponies from the Club’s own string. Beginners, or those wishing to hone their skills may sign up for polo lessons with the Club’s resident pros. For those interested primarily in horse riding, you can participate in any of the Club’s varied Riding Section programmes and activities including basic riding, competitive dressage as well as show jumping at various levels, either in one to one or group lessons with our qualified riding instructors. You may also choose to enjoy the pleasure of simply hacking along a wide selection of jungle trails that are accessible from the Club.

Rules of Polo 1
The yellow player has the line, and at fair speed the white player would be crossing the line without sufficient safety margin, resulting in a penalty against white.
3
When travelling in the same direction the white player may draw level with yellow and then force him across the line and take possession of the ball without committing a dangerous foul.
5
Two players riding for a ball from opposite directions in the open must both give way to the left and take the ball on their right or offside.
2
Even at a far lesser angle the white player would still be crossing the line if he continues in that direction, and committing a dangerous foul.
4
The white player may move in parallel with the line and play a shot providing he can do so without interfering with the yellow’s mount or causing him to check back. If white would cross the line to the dotted position it would be a foul.
6
When two players are approaching a ball in the open from different directions, the player (white), with the line of the ball on his offside, right hand side, has right of way.

Justerini & Brooks were founded in 1749 and very quickly gained a reputation for both quality and service, a reputation that has been maintained ever since. First awarded the Royal Warrant by King George III in 1760, we are proud to have been granted this honour by every successive monarch since, including Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. For over 260 years the company has built up an unrivalled reputation, both for the quality of our wines and the standard of service offered to customers all over the world. THE WINES SERVED AT BRITISH POLO DAY SINGAPORE 2013 WILL BE:
MÂCON UCHIZY, GERALD ET PHILIBERT TALMARD, 2011 Gerald and Philibert Talmard make one of the best buys in Burgundy and one of the most popular wines from the J&B portfolio . This is classic Macon, not harvested too late as is the fashion with some of the region’s growers , so as to obtain a very fresh, precise wine. A style enhanced by fermentation and ageing sur lie in steel tanks. This is buttery and rewarding, with a racy freshness that keeps it alive and vital to the long finish. Notes of apple, conference pear, citrus and peach - beautifully balanced and incredibly moreish.
JUSTERINI & BROOKS, POMEROL, NV Our private cuvée Pomerol is produced for us by JP. Moueix - who are responsible for the great Pomerol estates of La Fleur Petrus, Hosanna, Providence and Trotanoy. This is typically generous and seductive, with a delightfully plumy, soft fruit core. An eminently approachable wine that doesn’t lack complexity or structure. It is a classic and utterly delicious Pomerol.

The British Exiles EXILES
The British Exiles Team is comprised of some of Britain’s top young players and a wide range of other polo enthusiasts who play predominantly outside Britain at British Polo Days around the world – hence the “Exiles”. In the 1850s, British tea planters discovered the game in Manipur (Munipoor) on the Burmese border with India. They founded the world’s first polo club at Silchar, west of Manipur. Other clubs followed and today the oldest in the world is the Calcutta Club which founded in 1862. Malta followed in 1868 because soldiers and naval officers stopped off there on their way home from India. In 1869, Edward “Chicken” Hartopp, of the 10th Hussars, read an account of the game in The Field magazine while stationed at Aldershot and, with fellow officers, organised the first game. Then known as “hockey on horseback,” it was played on a hastily-rolled Hounslow Heath where a shortlist of about 10 rules was also hastily assembled. But, it was John Watson (18561908), of the 13th Hussars, who formulated the first real rules of the game in India in the 1870s. 1. Ann Wilkinson

CAMBRIDGE
The Cambridge University Polo Club was founded in 1873 by the Hon. John Fitzwilliam, making it one of the oldest surviving clubs in Europe. In 1879 the University players felt strong enough to enter a team in the Hurlingham Club’s Champion Open Cup which was the premier competition of the time and is equivalent to the modern day Gold Cup. Although they were quickly defeated, the experience served them well and they returned later that year to defeat Oxford in the first Varsity Match. The Varsity Match is still the oldest continuing polo fixture in the western world.

History of the Game Polo is perhaps the oldest game in the world – having been played over 2500 years ago - and is truly international. The name polo is said to have been derived from the Tibetan word “pulu”, meaning ball.
Ancient Polo
I
n 600 BC the first recorded game of polo took place between the Turkomans and Persians. The Turkomans won. Polo began as a training game for cavalry units, usually the king’s guard or other elite troops. To the warlike tribesmen, who played it with as many as 100 to a side, it was a miniature battle. Persian literature and art give us the richest accounts of polo in antiquity. Ferdowsi, the famed poet-historian, gives a number of accounts of royal polo tournaments in his 9th century epic, Shahnameh (the Epic of Kings). In the earliest account, Ferdowsi romanticizes an international match between Turanian force and the followers of Siyâvash, a legendary prince from the earliest centuries of the Empire. The game spread into North India. In fact Sultan Qutb-ud-din Aibak, the first Muslim Emperor of North India, actually died accidentally in 1210 playing polo. From Persia, in medieval times polo spread to the Byzantines (who called it tzykanion), and
after the Muslim conquests to the Ayyubid and Mameluke dynasties of Egypt and the Levant, whose elites favored it above all other sports. Notable sultans such as Saladin and Baybars were known to play it and encourage it in their court. Polo sticks were features on the Mameluke precursor to modern day playing cards. Polo was passed from Persia to other parts of Asia including the Indian subcontinent and China, where it was very popular during the Tang Dynasty and frequently depicted in paintings and statues. The Moguls were largely responsible for taking the game from Persia to the east and by the 16th century the Emperor Babur had established it in India. Polo was revived in Japan by the 8th Shogun, Tokugawa Yoshimune (1684-1751) and was played until early 20th century. It was the favourite sport of the last Shogun who surrendered power to the Emperor in 1868.

Modern Polo
T
he modern game of polo, though formalized and popularized by the British, is derived from Manipur (now a state in India) when British tea planters discovered the game in Manipur (Munipoor) on the Burmese border with India and eåstablished the first polo club in the world at Silchar, west of Manipur in 1862. In 1869, Edward “Chicken” Hartopp, 10th Hussars, read an account of the game in The Field, while stationed at Aldershot, and, with brother officers, organised the first game known then as “hockey on horseback”- on a hastily-rolled Hounslow Heath against The 9th Lancers. The 1st Life Guards and the Royal Horse Guards were quick to follow suit on grounds at Hounslow and in Richmond Park; and then on a small ground near Earl’s Court known as Lillie Bridge. The first polo club in England was Monmouthshire, founded by Capt. Francis “Tip” Herbert, 7th Lancers, at his brother’s seat, Clytha Park, near Abergavenny in 1872.
In 1875, the first official match in Argentina took place on 3rd September, where the game had been taken by English and Irish engineers and ranchers.

WHEELPOWER IS THE NATIONAL ORGANISATION AND REGISTERED CHARITY FOR WHEELCHAIR SPORT After the immense generosity displayed in 2012, I would like to start by thanking everyone who placed a bid during last year’s Loud Auction. The Co-Founders at British Polo Day have also informed me that the guests in Singapore are the most philanthropically minded from any country that they raise money in around the world. A proud boast indeed. What I have always loved about WheelPower is the single line that says so much to those who are newly disabled or disabled children right up to Britain’s magnificent Paralympians, who are already preparing for Rio in 2016: ‘Transforming lives through sport.’ A new horizon in the face of what are often changed circumstances. Thank you for your continued support and I hope you all have an immensely enjoyable day, in what I know are wonderful surroundings.
