Dear Guests, Welcome to the British Polo Day China and to Tang Polo Club! There is some speculation about the origins of the sport of polo with some tracing its origins back to China over 1000 years ago. What is certain, is that under the Tang Dynasty (618-907 A.D.), China became the world’s leading polo nation. In the 300 years of the Tang Dynasty, 18 out of the 22 Emperors were keen polo players. The Tang Polo Club celebrates that tradition. The modern game of polo as we know it, was reinvented and codified by the British in the 19th Century, so it is through the British Polo Day China that we aim to narrate the shared heritage of these two great nations. We have always believed that the horse is an international language and represents a bridge between cultures, and we are pleased that this event provides a platform for us all to come together. As ever, we are indebted to our partners, many of whom are of British origin, but have very strong relationships here. We hope that these ties will strengthen as a result of the relationships developed today, but above all, we hope you enjoy yourselves and have a great day.

The Brompton Cycle Polo Exhibition Match
This year at the British Polo Day China we are pleased to showcase Cycle Polo in partnership with Brompton bicycles. All Bromptons are designed and built in their factory in West London, England. Brompton is one of only two major frame manufacturers still based in the UK,and have been in full production since 1988. The company remains in private hands and is now led by Will Butler-Adams, though the Brompton’s inventor, Andrew Ritchie, continues to act as Technical Director. Today, Bromptons are sold in 42 export markets. Cycle Polo was invented in County Wicklow, Ireland, in 1891 by retired cyclist, Richard J. Mecredy. That same year the first cycle polo match was played between The Scalp and the Ohne Hast C.C.. Towards the end of the 19th century the game reached Great Britain, France, and the United States where the American Star Bicycle was a popular mount. The first international match was played between Ireland and England in 1901. Cycle polo was a demonstration sport at the 1908 London Olympics with Ireland winning the gold, beating Germany. The sport reached its peak of popularity in Great Britain during the 1930s with the introduction of the regional leagues. Cycle polo also flourished in France during this period with the establishment of the French league. Internationals between France and Great Britain were held regularly. However the Second World War marked the beginning of the demise of cycle polo in Britain. The sport managed to hang on in France though, with league championships held regularly till today. The 1980s saw the rise of two new powers in cycle polo, India and USA. The Cycle Polo Association of India was officially created in 1966 and the Bicycle Polo Association of America was created in 1994. International cycle polo matches staged a comeback in the 1990s with the first world championship organized in 1996 in the USA. Today there is organized cycle polo being played in Brazil, Argentina, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Great Britain, India, Ireland, Malaysia, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Switzerland and USA. Cycle polo was officially recognized by the International Cycling Union in 2001.

The British Exiles Team is comprised of some of Britain’s top young players and a wide range of other polo enthusiasts, who play predominantly outside Britain at British Polo Days around the world – hence the “Exiles” Stuart Wrigley is British Polo Day’s most capped player, with thirteen appearances in eight different countries, and he will be ably supported in the 1 position by two stalwarts of the game Toby Copson and Viscount Melville, who has recently played in both Great Britain and Russia after successfully rowing across The Atlantic Ocean. 6-goaler George Meyrick, last season’s Hackett BPD Player of the Year and one of Britain’s brightest rising talents, completes this formidable team.

BCC is a recently established polo team based on the esteemed hospital - BeauCare Clinics. A decade ago, China did not have a single polo venue to its name. Now Polo in China is thriving, with the addition of numerous Polo Clubs and also teams, so it is only fitting that today at British Polo Day China, we have seen the birth of BCC Polo Team. This year BCC Polo Team will be competing against a vigorous British Exiles Team for the coveted Hackett Cup. Today’s 12-goal team will see Tang Polo Club owner and chairman Shilai Liu (0) leading BBC Polo Team playing at 1, with Augustin (2) backing up at 2 with 5-goalers Eduardo Venturino and Miguel Diaz completing this impressive side.

The British Schools Polo Team has been introduced as a nod not only to the best amateur traditions of the sport but also to institutions that are renowned and respected around the world. The transition to a sporting era of ever increasing professionalism inevitably displaces some of the spirit and charm of a bygone age. Sir Winston Churchill (who else) made a statement that is widely known in the world of polo but nevertheless neatly summarises the ability of polo to bridge cultures - “a polo handicap is your passport to the world”. Today’s four players have travelled widely as a result of their long-standing multigenerational passion for the game. They have all represented their various schools at home and abroad over the years.

The Tang Polo Club was established in October 2010 and is China’s premier Polo and Equestrian Club. Since joining the Hurlingham Polo Association in 2011, Tang has built up an extensive reciprocal base with many premier international Polo Clubs. Tang has taken its members to participate in prestigious polo tournaments around the world, countries such as the UK, Argentina, Dubai, Thailand and Australia. The Tang Polo Club devotes itself to the promotion and development of polo, and hosts numerous annual polo tournaments inviting international world-class players, professionals and coaches. Polo is perhaps the oldest game in the world – having been played over 2500 years ago - and is truly international. The name polo is said to have been derived from the Tibetan word “pulu”, meaning ball.

History of the game
n 600 BC the first recorded game of polo took place between the Turkomans and Persians. The Turkomans won. Polo began as a training game for cavalry units, usually the King’s Guard or other elite troops. To the warlike tribesmen, who played it with as many as 100 to a side, it was a miniature battle. Persian literature and art give us the richest accounts of polo in antiquity. Ferdowsi, the famed poet-historian, gives a number of accounts of royal polo tournaments in his 9th century epic, Shahnameh (the Epic of Kings). In the earliest account, Ferdowsi romanticises an international match between Turanian force and the followers of Siyâvash, a legendary prince from the earliest centuries of the Empire. The game spread into North India. In fact Sultan Qutb-ud-din Aibak, the first Muslim Emperor of North India, actually died accidentally in 1210 playing polo.

From Persia, in medieval times polo spread after the Muslim conquests to the Ayyubid and Mameluke dynasties of Egypt and the Levant, whose elites favored it above all other sports. Notable sultans such as Saladin and Baybars were known to play it and encourage it in their court. Polo sticks were features on the Mameluke precursor to modern day playing cards. Polo was passed from Persia to other parts of Asia including the Indian subcontinent and China, where it was very popular during the Tang Dynasty and frequently depicted in paintings and statues. The Moguls were largely responsible for taking the game from Persia to the east and by the 16th century the Emperor Babur had established it in India. Polo was revived in Japan by the 8th Shogun, Tokugawa Yoshimune (1684-1751) and was played until early 20th century. It was the favourite sport of the last Shogun who surrendered power to the Emperor in 1868.

The modern game of polo, though formalised and popularised by the British, is derived from Manipur (now a state in India) when British tea planters discovered the game in Manipur (Munipoor) on the Burmese border with India and established the first polo club in the world at Silchar, west of Manipur in 1862. In 1869, Edward “Chicken” Hartopp, 10th Hussars, read an account of the game in The Field, while stationed at Aldershot, and, with brother officers, organised the first game known then as “hockey on horseback”- on a hastily-rolled Hounslow Heath against The 9th Lancers. The 1st Life Guards and the Royal Horse Guards were quick to follow suit on grounds at Hounslow and in Richmond Park; and then on a small ground near Earl’s Court known as Lillie Bridge. The first polo club in England was Monmouthshire, founded by Capt. Francis “Tip” Herbert, 7th Lancers, at his brother’s seat, Clytha Park, near Abergavenny in 1872.

Shilai Liu Chairman - Tang Polo Club Shilai Liu, Chairman of Jing Hung Investment Co., Ltd. Beijing, is an entrepreneur with wide ranging interests. Shilai is an active sportsman with interests in sailing, boating, skiing, golf, and riding. In 2005 Liu found his true passion in polo. Over the next five years, he will led his teammates to tournaments in Argentina, Australia, The United States, Europe and Thailand. Liu became the first Chinese player registered in the International Equestrian Association and is now the number one ranked player in China. His immediate personal goal is to advance to 6-goals and to compete in the strongest and most competitive matches. Above all, Liu wants to see polo thrive in China so that more Chinese can share his sport he loves.

Player - British Exiles Bobby is a keen polo enthusiast playing all over the world as a professional from the age of 16. He has played for England in the world cup in Mexico and represented his country in Pakistan, Zimbabwe and Italy. A man keen for adventure and charity support, Bobby has recently returned from The Atlantic Challenge where he captained a 4 man team (all polo players) rowing boat across The Atlantic Ocean from The Canaries to Antigua in the 5000 km race which is known for being one of the toughest challenges on earth. They won their class and came second overall raising money for the Brooke charity. Bobby has played for BPD in Munich, Great Britain, Russia and now China.

Jeremy Hackett Global Partner & Chairman - Hackett London Jeremy Hackett is Chairman of Hackett and is one of the original founders of the company. Born in Devizes, Wiltshire, his appreciation of clothes started at an early age as his father worked in the textile furnishings business. He met Ashley LloydJennings whilst dealing in the second-hand clothes market, which led to the conception of Hackett, the gentleman’s outfitters. Today he continues to have complete ‘hands-on’ involvement in the business and a week rarely goes by in which he is not to be found serving a customer in at least one of the shops. His built-in ability to spot potentially best-selling garments and accessories is a key contributor to Hackett’s continuing success.
John Stevenson Holland & Holland - VIP Client Relations John was raised in Derbyshire, where from a young age he learnt many of the country pursuits. He continues to enjoy, fly fishing, game shooting and riding. He has also spent time in South Africa working as a Game Ranger at Zulu Nyala Private Reserve which introduced him to his love of the African bush, its wildlife and conservation. He has travelled extensively throughout his career having held senior management positions in the export offices of British Luxury Brands. John has worked for Holland & Holland for 12 years where he is Head of VIP Client Relations, Special Projects (including the new Holland & Holland Range Rover) and Corporate Alliances. John currently lives in rural Berkshire with his wife and two children.
