elcome to the sixth British Polo Day Abu Dhabi, presented by Land Rover. We are honoured to be invited back to the Ghantoot Racing and Polo Club. Founded in 1997 as a private, royal venue based on the vision of the late president, HH Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan. It now operates under the patronage of his son, HH Sheikh Falah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan. It is one of the most prestigious polo clubs in the world and has played host to HRH Prince Charles and in 2014, hosted HRH Prince Harry for the Sentebale Polo Cup. Polo is by no means new to the Middle East. It is believed that polo began in Persia as far back as the 5th Century BC, however, the modern game as we know it was rediscovered in India in the 19th Century by the British Army. JaegerLeCoultre, responding to the need for Officers to have a watch suitable for polo, developed the Reverso and we are delighted that they are continuing this tradition and association as our Official Global Timekeeper.

Continuing on the military theme, members of the Cavalry & Guards regiments of the British Army will start proceedings with a game of camel polo. There will also be a Brompton bicycle polo exhibition which showcases another version of the game that was an Olympic Sport back in 1906. The main highlight of the evening will be the British Exiles team taking on the Ghantoot team which we anticipate to be another thrilling encounter. We are pleased to raise money for Help For Heroes and WAHA under the patronage of HH Sheikha Shamsa bint Hamdan Al Nahyan in an auction this evening and we hope you will give generously. As ever, we are indebted to all the partners for making this event possible. We hope you enjoy British Polo Day Abu Dhabi.

nce again this year, JaegerLeCoultre is gearing up for a polo season that looks set to be a thriller. Continuing a long tradition and a long standing affiliation with the world of polo, Jaeger-LeCoultre will be involved in this new polo season sponsoring some of the best competitions around the world and being well represented on the finest polo fields by its ambassadors, fired up by sporting ambition. They will proudly sport the Reverso, the iconic polo watch designed over 83 years ago in order to withstand the blows of a polo match, while losing none of its elegance. Since 1931, the Reverso embodies elegance, teamwork and passion, qualities that are intrinsic to the world of polo.
This iconic watch was designed following an idea born in the polo fields of India from British polo players who had enough of having their watches shattered during games. The famous reversible case was invented to protect the dial and the glass, exposing the metal back to possible shocks. From more than 80 years, the ties between the legendary swivelling case and polo have remained ingrained in the very fibres of the Reverso. JaegerLeCoultre is more closely linked to polo than ever through regular sporting partnerships in a number of countries, thanks to internationally recognized ambassadors. Today, Jaeger-LeCoultre is proud to partner with British Polo Day.

RU LES OF POLO 1
The green player has the line, and at fair speed the white player would be crossing the line without a sufficient safety margin, resulting in a penalty against white.
3
When travelling in the same direction the white player may draw level with green player and then force him across the line and take possession of the ball without committing a dangerous foul.
5
Two players riding for a ball from opposite directions in the open must both give way to the left and take the ball on their right or offside.
2
Even at a far lesser angle the white player would still be crossing the line if he continues in that direction, and committing a dangerous foul.
4
The white player may move in parallel with the line and play a shot providing he can do so without interfering with the green player’s mount or causing him to check back. If white would cross the line to the dotted position it would be a foul.
6
When two players are approaching a ball in the open from different directions, the player (white), with the line of the ball on his offside, right hand side, has right of way.

ome of the world’s leading polo players will be descending on Marrakech for British Polo Day Morocco 2015, created for the benefit of the Eve Branson Foundation and under the high patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI of Morocco. The event, hosted by the Ritz-Carlton Residences Marrakech and the Jnan Amar Polo Club on the 25th April 2015, is now in its third year and attracts a loyal international following that brings fabulous energy and excitement to the estate and polo club and raises funds for a very important cause through generous donations given by those attending. Jnan Amar is a mixed use development that includes 85 branded Ritz-Carlton Residences and is situated just 20 minutes from Marrakech within a carefully landscaped 50 hectare estate, benefitting from majestic views of the nearby Atlas Mountains and the desert surrounds.
The developers have invested heavily in bringing together the world’s greatest talent in design, management, polo and service to create a destination that is unique and distinctive. Polo has a natural habitat in the city and was once home to a polo club owned by Patrick Guerrand Hermes who until recently was President of the Federation of International Polo. Patrick is now back, this time as Honorary President of the Jnan Amar Polo Club. In addition to the polo and residences, the developers are building an 80 suite Ritz-Carlton hotel which will be extending its legendary service to homeowners and guests, providing a 5 star destination, unforgettable experiences and first class facilities. Complementing the hotel, the RitzCarlton Residences are now being offered for sale, with prices starting from £600,000 to £2,000,000. Many of the residences look directly onto the polo fields and all come with private pools, terraces, fully fitted kitchens and landscaped gardens.

This year at British Polo Day we are pleased to showcase Brompton Bicycle Polo. Brompton Bicycle is the biggest bike manufacturer in the UK, with its factory in Kew, West London. Brompton’s history can be traced back to 1975, when the British inventor, Andrew Ritchie, created prototypes of Brompton bikes from his bedroom in South Kensington, London. The company remains in private hands and is now led by Will Butler-Adams OBE, though Andrew Ritchie continues to act as Technical Director. Today, Brompton bikes are sold in 44 export markets. Brompton bikes are most often seen flying around the cities, but have proven to be great steeds in the game of Bicycle Polo in recent years. Their speed off the mark and technical build ensure a thrilling game of Bicycle Polo from the first chukka to the last! Bicycle Polo was invented in County Wicklow, Ireland, in 1891 by retired cyclist, Richard J. Mecredy. Two centuries on, Bicycle Polo is being played in over 17 countries worldwide and was officially recognised by the International Cycle Union (UCI) in 2001.

C AVA L RY & GUARDS
The Cavalry & Guards Club is a gentleman’s club in Piccadilly, London. It is open to officers who had served in one of the Cavalry or Guards regiments of the British Army. The present club was formed by the merger of the Cavalry Club and the Guards’ Club in 1976. Begun by Captain Weatherall, 20th Hussars, in 1907 this prestigious club has been occupied by The British Army for over 100 years and has strong links to the ancient sport of Polo. Man has ridden camels almost as long as he has ridden horses, so it was only natural that after horse polo was developed camel polo followed. Today we welcome teams from The Cavalry & Guards regiments of The British Army who had camel units in Africa and Asia during the nineteenth century. Camel polo was pioneered at British Polo Day Dubai in 2010 and was picked up by CNN and broadcast globally. Its success has continued and it is now a staple in the UAE, and we are delighted to continue this tradition once again this year.

The British Exiles has been introduced as a nod not only to the best amateur traditions of the sport but also to institutions that are renowned and respected around the world. The transition to a sporting era haracterised by ever increasing professionalism inevitably displaces some of the spirit and charm of a bygone age. Half of this year’s British Exiles team is made up of players from Millfield School. Founded in 1935, with six princes brought from India, Millfield is today one of Britain’s leading independent schools. Jamie Morrison (3), Owner & Chairman of The Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club and one of the leading Old Millfieldian players, will be picking up his 5th and 6th cap at BPD Abu Dhabi 2015 & BPD Dubai 2015. Distinguished Old Millfieldians include His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan bin Mubarak al Nahayan, who attended the school between 1968-1975.

GHANTOOT
The Ghantoot Polo Team showcases the skills of developing Emirati players alongside accomplished Argentine professionals. When compared to many of the world’s leading polo teams, which possess a long and rich history, Ghantoot is a very young team and yet that has not stopped them gaining international honours. They have travelled the world claiming victories at tournaments in St Moritz and Sotogrande among others. At home or abroad Ghantoot carry the pride of the people of the UAE. The Ghantoot team were worthy victors of the Dubai Gold Cup in 2013 & 2014 respectively. Ghantoot will be seeking to continue their impermeable winning streak this year, against a vigorous British Exiles team seeking their first win in Abu Dhabi.

Marc de Panafieu Partner - Jaeger-LeCoultre Marc grew up in Paris and moved to Dubai more than 10 years ago. He is the Regional Brand Director of the Manufacture Jaeger-LeCoultre in the Middle East. Since its founding in 1833, the Manufacture has been an inventive protagonist in the field of Haute Horlogerie; the 1,249 mechanical calibers developed and the 413 registered patents indeed illustrate the creative passion that continually drives the men and women of the Grande Maison. Marc, who describes himself as a family man with deep-rooted French values and a twist of Middle Eastern influence, enjoys horse riding as he used to hunt and compete in dressage and jumping when in France. Equally, he takes pleasure in travelling and fine watchmaking, two passions that his role at JaegerLeCoultre enables him to combine.
Jamie Morrison Player Jamie Morrison started playing polo at the age of 13, influenced by his late father Bryan who started the Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club. He has played in many different countries, playing on grass, snow and sand versions of the game. He has won 2 European gold medals representing England in European Championships and the 22 goal Prince of Wales Trophy with an all English team. Having recently played in St Moritz and the English arena season he is very much looking forward to playing in his fifth British Polo Day here in Abu Dhabi.

n countries all over the world, polo has a long history of raising significant funding for worthy causes. Wherever possible, British Polo Day is entirely committed to bringing to bear the full weight of our partners, network and creative talent to this end. In partnership with our host in each case, British Polo Day divides the fund raising proceeds from charity auctions and raffles that are held at any event between local and British charities. In so doing, the polo ties between two nations are reinforced further through shared philanthropic aims. WAHA International and Help For Heroes have been chosen as the charity beneficiaries of British Polo Day Abu Dhabi 2015.
WAHA International was established by Her Highness Sheikha Shamsa bint Hamdan Al Nahyan as a response to the unacceptably high maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity rates in many parts of Africa and Asia. Help For Heroes was founded in 2007 in order to provide direct, practical support to those who have suffered life-changing injuries and illnesses while serving in Britain’s Armed Forces. British Polo Day is committed to raising significant funding for these two charities – founded to achieve life saving and life changing results – and would urge guests to bid freely and generously during the loud auction in aid of these formidable causes. O
ur vision is very simple; we believe that any serviceman or woman who suffers life changing injuries or illness in the line of duty deserves the very best support. It is thanks to the generous support from organisations like you that we have been able to achieve so much in a short time, but the soldiers, sailors and airmen who are injured today will still need our support in the future. Over 220,000 served in Iraq and Afghanistan and it’s important that they, and all veterans from past and future conflicts know that Help for Heroes is here for them and their families, whenever they need us. They are still battling and we won’t let them battle alone. Help for Heroes champions the concept of holistic 360° support, delivered either directly through Help for Heroes’ Recovery Centres or via one of our specialist charity partners. Our four Recovery Centres are open to both serving and veteran members of the Armed Forces and provide educational programmes, work placements and
sporting activities. These activities encourage independence, raise morale and develop camaraderie with others who have shared experiences. Our aim is to ensure the Recovery Centres are here for all who need them for a lifetime’s support. That’s a big commitment and we are counting on our friends’ on-going help to deliver on this promise. We’d like to say a massive thank you to British Polo Day for supporting Help for Heroes. Onwards and Upwards!

Every mother’s death is unacceptable. We must do what works! An appeal by Her Highness Sheikha Shamsa bint Hamdan Al Nahyan President of Women and Health Alliance (WAHA) International
NO WOMAN SHOULD DIE GIVING LIFE If there is good news, it is this: there is greater commitment than ever before to saving the lives of mothers and their newborns. However, despite renewed international advocacy efforts, there are enormous challenges ahead: the majority of countries are unlikely to achieve the 5th Millennium Development Goal of reducing maternal mortality by 75% from its 1990 level by 2015. In simple language, this corresponds to hundreds of thousands of women who are dying unnecessarily every year. In simple language, this is unacceptable. It is time for us to take an honest look at what needs to be done. We know that the vast majority of these deaths can be prevented. We have the techniques and know-how to save lives and reduce this suffering. We have done it before in Europe, America and the Middle East. We must now do it in the African and Asian countries where too many women are still dying to give life. Maternal deaths are clustered around labour, delivery, and in the days and weeks following birth. The main direct cause of death is obstetric haemorrhage – in other words, bleeding to death. The most effective way to eliminate these deaths is to ensure that women are in the presence of a skilled attendant, such as a midwife, in a suitably equipped health facility for the delivery. Trained midwives and practitioners must have the skills to provide obstetric care to manage haemorrhage as well as major infections and obstructed labour. They also need the skills to provide the medical and surgical interventions, like transfusions and Caesareans that save lives. So what do we need to do next? We need to train more midwives to assist women during the delivery of their babies and to provide emergency obstetric and newborn care. We need better-equipped health facilities to encourage women to deliver in places where skilled attendants can provide quality obstetric and newborn care. We need to remove the financial obstacles that impede women from coming to health facilities before the onset of complications by reinforcing links between communities
and healthcare providers. We need to address the social barriers to delivering in health facilities by mobilising communities and providing culturally appropriate information and education about the advantages of doing so. And we need to remove physical barriers to attending health facilities by investing in innovative referral systems that use new telecommunication and transportation strategies. We need to give women and their babies a fighting chance of surviving childbirth. And while we are rightly focusing on reducing maternal deaths, let us not forget that for every woman who dies, another twenty suffer debilitating complications following childbirth due to a lack of obstetric care. From a prolapsed uterus to chronic incontinence or obstetric fistula, childbirth complications can equate to a life of profound psychological, social and economic misery if left untreated. The World Health Organisation estimates that 2 million women currently need surgical repair for obstetric fistula, with an additional 50,000 to 100,000 new cases occurring each year. A fraction of these cases are treated each year and the backlog of cases remains virtually untouched. To deal with this, obstetricians, urologists and general surgeons must integrate fistula repair and management of other postpartum complications into general practice; and midwives and other frontline health workers must be involved in the active identification of cases for early referral and treatment. Each one of us has a role to play in stopping maternal and newborn deaths and injuries. And this is why I appeal to you today with a simple request: give women a fighting chance of surviving the delivery of their babies. Make sure that more midwives and doctors have the right skills to provide obstetric care to save the lives of mothers and their newborns. Ensure all women have access to suitably equipped health facilities. And ensure that treatment is available for the millions of women who suffer a life-time of misery from childbirth injuries. Let’s do what works!
OUR GOAL
OUR KEY AREAS OF WORK
Women and Health Alliance (WAHA) International works to support and strengthen health services in the countries where maternal health needs are greatest.
Promoting delivery with a midwife and rapid access to Caesarean sections in the event of obstructed labour. This includes training key frontline health workers, improving health infrastructure, and implementing innovative strategies to facilitate referral and treatment of obstetric emergencies;
Our goal is simple: to ensure that all women have a safe pregnancy and motherhood. We believe in the power of partnerships to get things done. That’s why at WAHA International, we work together with university teaching hospitals, national associations of midwives, obstetricians and gynaecologists, community groups and policymakers. We believe in promoting a southto-south knowledge exchange to find the most innovative and effective strategies to ensure that women have access to skilled help during and after the delivery of their baby.
Integrating fistula surgery and treatment of postpartum complications into the routine training and practice of gynaecologists, obstetricians and urologists through our partnerships with university teaching hospitals in Africa; Mobilising communities through information, education and communication to overcome the social and cultural barriers to using maternal and child health services.
WAHA International was established by Her Highness Sheikha Shamsa bint Hamdan Al Nahyan as a response to the unacceptably high maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity rates in many parts of Africa and Asia.

In 2007 Bryn and his wife were so moved by a visit to Selly Oak hospital Birmingham where they met wounded soldiers that they set up Help for Heroes. Help For Heroes vision rests on the belief that any serviceman or woman who suffers life changing injuries or illness in the line of duty deserves the very best support. The Charity has made an indelible impression on the lives of so many and indeed the national psyche as a whole. Co-Founder Bryn Parry, cartoonist and author of Horses for Courses, has attended BPD Abu Dhabi for a number of years. He has little time to paint cartoons these days but when he does they tend to feature Hero the Bear, the Help for Heroes mascot and other designs to raise much needed funds for H4H. Bryn has kindly put his creative talent towards this original painting specifically for BPD Abu Dhabi 2015. Our thanks go to Bryn and the tremendous team at Help For Heroes - as well as all their legion of supporters - for all that they have done and all that they continue to do. http://www.helpforheroes.org.uk
