Dear Guests, Welcome to the 4th British Polo Day Mexico, presented by Land Rover. “There is no better fertiliser than the soles of the owners feet.” - Unknown This unattributed saying neatly articulates the reason why British Polo Day Mexico continues to elevate and escalate year-on-year. The event continues to flourish through the complete support and patronage of the de Alba family as well as our hotel partner, the sublime Matilda in San Miguel. The ‘Dual Year’ of Great Britain and Mexico has seen both nations champion and celebrate one-another to great effect over the course of 2015. BPD chose to mark the occasion by welcoming our Mexican hosts as the visiting country for our home turf event in June. This return leg, our 4th in consecutive years, will close off this rather special year in fitting and celebratory style. As ever, the cultural bridge is built around a shared passion for horses, luxury heritage as well as the paramount importance of building significant, strengthening and lasting relationships - at the most dynamic level - not just between both countries but also in a similarly meaningful global context. We wish you a joyous and engaging day.

It fills us with great pleasure and pride to welcome British Polo Day for its 4th consecutive year in Mexico. As proud hosts of the Mexican edition, this year celebrates the Dual Year of Mexico and The UK- celebrating the best of British and Mexican tradition, craft and heritage in a cultural exchange that will go beyond the year 2015 and centuries to come. Year on year British Polo Day Mexico has proven to grow into a more solid platform reaching the most influential families in the country, along with strategic partners and charities who share the value of our vision- in this case NiĂąos en AlegrĂa. The Dual Year is a true testament to the strength of this shared vision, as well as the growing economic confidence and cultural opportunities within Mexico- in a year-long celebration of cultural, educational and business exchange between our two nations. Mexico is the first country in Latin America to agree mutual recognition with the UK and can pave the way for further collaboration between the UK and other Latin American countries. We look forward to welcoming old friends as well as new and on behalf of the whole family and Balvanera, I welcome all of our guests to the 4th British Polo Day Mexico and seeing the relationship between Grupo Balvanera and British Polo Day grow even stronger. Enjoy Royal Salute Responsibly

All the King’s Horses They call polo The sporT of kings for a reason – it has always been played by royalty. From the moment the Persian royal family adopted the game to train the King’s Elite Cavalry, right down to our own princes, crowned heads have being riding chukkas harder than anyone. King Edward VIII was a keen player – during a tour of India in 1921 he introduced his friend, the future Earl Mountbatten of Burma, to the sport. The earl encouraged his nephew, the Duke of Edinburgh, to play and His Royal Highness co-founded the Household Brigade Polo Club. The Prince of Wales was given his first polo pony, San Quinina, at the age of 15 and first played in a team captained by his father in 1963. Both his sons, Princes William and Harry, are now keen players. Why have kings and princes always loved the sport? At Royal Salute we’d hazard a guess that it’s because the magical air surrounding monarchs finds an echo on the polo field, where man and beast – like sovereign and nation – bond to become something magnificent.

The centaur forward

The rider and the pony combine to make one player, argues Facundo Pieres. He’s the Lionel Messi of polo, a Royal Salute ambassador and supporter of the Latin America team today. “A great polo player knows the pony is 70% of the game and moves in harmony with the horse, turning and stopping with the slightest nudge of the leg or the arm,” he explains. “A bad polo player is always fighting the horse, wrenching it this way and that to get it to do their bidding.” Pieres carefully selects 10 horses for every game, changing ponies two or three times every chukka and choosing the best horses to match his opponent’s stable. “But I have four who I am perfectly in tune with, who give me confidence, who make me play better and who know my game as well as I do,” he grins, his face lighting up like a kid discussing Christmas. “I try to play these ponies at the end of every game. One, Magnifica, was the horse I was on when I scored the golden goal to win the Queen’s Cup – one of the proudest moments of my career. Could I have scored that goal on another horse? I’m not sure.”

Wild at heart

Fit for polo?

Borwick explains that all horses race in the wild – running in a herd to find out which is the fastest, strongest alpha male. Polo ponies require something more. Although a pony won’t take to the field in a competition until they’re seven, they start training before they’re two – experiencing to check and turn and run and stop. They play their first friendly game aged four, learning the pace and bustle of the field at a slower pace. “You can play a pony in a competition aged six or just over,” Borwick explains. “But it’s far better if you wait.” We couldn’t agree more.

Squat and turn: Put a pillow between your knees and stand 1ft away from the wall. Squat while squeezing the pillow, and rotate your trunk from side to side, touching the wall with both hands each time. Repeat eight times. Overhead side slams: Raise a medicine ball above your head. Rotate your trunk to your right and slam the ball to the floor. Squat, grab the ball, and repeat on the other side. Repeat five times. Lunge with twist: Stand with legs hip-width apart and hands behind your head. Step forwards into a lunge until the rear knee almost touches the floor. Rotate towards the lunging leg. Repeat on the other side for two sets of three lunges per side.

Training a polo pony takes time – and at Royal Salute, that’s something we understand. Our youngest bottle, after all, contains whiskies that are at least 21 years old. “You can rush a polo pony’s training, but you’ll get a horse that plays worse and has a shorter career,” explains Royal Salute ambassador and England’s prince of polo Malcolm Borwick, who’s backing England, of course.

Royal Salute delights in the dedication and craft of polo players. But we realise this is far from an overnight game. Players swing a 500g mallet with wild abandon, and require an iron core, rock-hard shoulders and sturdy back to avoid injury. Martin Perez at Fitness for Polo suggests the following pro-player exercises – which also promise washboard abs and a powerful stride…

nce again this year, JaegerLeCoultre is gearing up for a polo season that looks set to be a thriller. Continuing a long tradition and a long standing affiliation with the world of polo, Jaeger-LeCoultre will be involved in this new polo season sponsoring some of the best competitions around the world and being well represented on the finest polo fields by its ambassadors, fired up by sporting ambition. They will proudly sport the Reverso, the iconic polo watch designed over 83 years ago in order to withstand the blows of a polo match, while losing none of its elegance. Since 1931, the Reverso embodies elegance, teamwork and passion, qualities that are intrinsic to the world of polo.

This iconic watch was designed following an idea born on the polo fields of India from British polo players who had had enough of having their watches shattered during games. The famous reversible case was invented to protect the dial and the glass, exposing the metal back to possible shocks. From more than 80 years, the ties between the legendary swivelling case and polo have remained ingrained in the very fibres of the Reverso. JaegerLeCoultre is more closely linked to polo than ever through regular sporting partnerships in a number of countries, thanks to internationally recognized ambassadors. Today, Jaeger-LeCoultre is proud to partner with British Polo Day.

AN I N T ERVIE W WITH CH A DWIC K D E L A N E Y - MANAGING DIRECTOR JUSTERINI & BROOKS -

Tell us about the early years - how did you become one of the country’s finest wine merchants and be granted a coveted Royal Warrant? We were founded by an Italian from Bologna, who came to London chasing the affection of an opera singer. He opened Justerini’s next to the Royal Opera House, then on Pall Mall. He failed in his amorous pursuits, but the quality of the wines he was importing came to the attention of St. James’s Palace. The firm supplied the wines for King George III Coronation and was granted its first Royal Warrant in 1761. We’ve now supplied wines to the Royal Household for eight successive monarchs to the present day. What in your mind has been the most seismic change in the wine world to have unfolded during your career? Domaine-bottled Burgundy - Justerini & Brooks is the biggest importer into the UK, shipping from nearly 60 producers every year. Also, increased focus on the top Italian wines. Barolo has captured the interest of Burgundy collectors looking for the next big thing and there is much anticipation for our Brunello 2010 release this month. What view do you hold that runs most counter to any prevailing opinion when it comes to the enjoyment of wine? I believe firmly in exactly that, the enjoyment of fine wine. The reward, even for investment wines is the pleasure of experiencing what’s inside the bottle. And I’m sure, given the lengths they go to, our producers would agree. The wine region, vineyard and/or producer that is currently exciting you the most? We recently hosted a dinner in London to celebrate 200 years of the Comte de Liger-Belair family at the Château de Vosne-Romanée in Burgundy. Louis-Michel, Le Comte de Liger-Belair, is making spellbinding wines. We tasted eight from eight different terroirs, each one stunning and creating a memory that will live long. I also adore the wines of Roberto Voerzio in Barolo – he’s one of the most gifted wine makers of his generation.

Which corners of the world are you seeing most interest from? Justerini & Brooks looks after a global client base. We began looking after overseas customers way back in 1866, initially in New York. Hong Kong started in 1976, with Singapore in 1980. There has been an explosion of wealth around the world over the past 15 years, which has led to the emergence of new private clients keen to appreciate and enjoy luxury products and experiences. Fine wine is almost peerless and limitless in its potential to deliver this intrigue and enjoyment; and today we have collectors based across 42 countries. For the layman, what single piece of advice would you give? The world of fine wine is fascinating in its complexity, rewarding in its thrilling quality. Seeking out a top merchant as a trusted guide through the regions, the growers, the vintages, will undoubtedly lead to a wine that charms you and sparks a lifetime of exploration and drinking pleasure. British Polo Day is all about the ‘young guns’ making waves internationally. Tell us about some of the young and influential wine makers that you work with? Our buyers put considerable effort into unearthing hidden talent from the burgeoning number of fresh, bright winemakers. These are growers committed to making artisan wines of balance and drinkability, like Burgundian brothers Marc and Alex Bachelet; and Thierry Pillot, who is turning Domaine Paul Pillot into one of the greats of Chassagne. I am also excited about the recent generational changes at Chateau Lafleur and Petrus, the two leading wines of Pomerol. British Polo Day is delighted to have Justerini & Brooks as its official wine partner. This is a rare partnership for you – what compelled you to become involved? British Polo Day is an international celebration of British luxury and I am delighted to support the entrepreneurial spirit of the founders. The events are first class and highly personal, which links naturally with our approach.

1

The green player has the line, and at fair speed the white player would be crossing the line without a sufficient safety margin, resulting in a penalty against white.

3

When travelling in the same direction the white player may draw level with green player and then force him across the line and take possession of the ball without committing a dangerous foul.

5

Two players riding for a ball from opposite directions in the open must both give way to the left and take the ball on their right or offside.

2

Even at a far lesser angle the white player would still be crossing the line if he continues in that direction, and committing a dangerous foul.

4

The white player may move in parallel with the line and play a shot providing he can do so without interfering with the green player’s mount or causing him to check back. If white would cross the line to the dotted position it would be a foul.

6

When two players are approaching a ball in the open from different directions, the player (white), with the line of the ball on his offside, right hand side, has right of way.

This year at British Polo Day we are pleased to showcase Brompton bicycle polo. Brompton bicycle is the biggest bike manufacturer in the UK, with its factory in Kew, West London. Brompton’s history can be traced back to 1975, when the British inventor, Andrew Ritchie, created prototypes of Brompton bikes from his bedroom in South Kensington, London. The company remains in private hands and is now led by Will Butler-Adams OBE, though Andrew Ritchie continues to act as Technical Director. Today, Brompton bikes are sold in 44 export markets. Brompton bikes are most often seen flying around the cities but have proven to be great steeds in the game of bicycle polo in recent years. Their speed off the mark and technical build ensure a thrilling game of bicycle polo from the first chukka to the last! Bicycle polo was invented in County Wicklow, Ireland in 1891 by retired cyclist, Richard J. Mecredy. Two centuries on, bicycle polo is being played in over 17 countries worldwide and was officially recognised by the International Cycle Union (UCI) in 2001.

MEXICO POLO TEAM

The two most significant polo areas in Mexico are Distrito Federal (based around Tecamac Polo Club just outside Mexico City) and QuerÊtaro (shared between the two polo Clubs Balvanera and El Marques). Their is no Pony Club system in Mexico, so these three clubs produce the majority of players that go on to represent the national team. After a lull in recent years, Mexican polo is once again growing strongly as a result of a new crop emerging from long established polo families. The next generation of players are exposed to an increasingly competitive domestic circuit as well as developing their skills in England, the U.S. and Argentina. This year’s Conade Mexico polo team combines the best of the established guard with the fresh talent in the ascendancy and will be seeking their third victory against The Hackett British Exiles in as many years.

The RJI Capital British Schools Polo Team has been introduced as a nod, not only to the best amateur traditions of the sport, but also to institutions that are renowned and respected around the world. The transition to a sporting era of ever increasing professionalism inevitably displaces some of the spirit and charm of a bygone age. Since the assembly of the British Schools Polo Team, who in their inaugural match were victorious in obtaining the coveted Charity Cup in Great Britain, the British Schools Polo Team have competed in Russia, China, Australia, USA and Great Britain. Today’s British Schools Team has travelled widely as a result of their longstanding multi-generational passion for the game and sees the experienced British Polo Day player James McBride lead the team having recently played in British Polo Day Singapore and Nihiwatu. BALVANER A POLO TEAM

Since Chepo de Alba – owner of Balvanera Polo & Country Club and host of BPD Mexico – discovered his lifelong love of horses and the game itself, Balvanera has attracted the most talented polo players from the region. Its renown within the global polo community and great infrastructure has led to the development of what is now the most important equestrian centre in the country. For the past 20 years Balvanera has hosted the principle show jumping events in Mexico. The combination of both polo and show jumping has given Balvanera a special position within Mexico’s equine community. An architectural gem in the heart of Leicestershire, Belvoir Castle is one of the country’s most atmospheric buildings, making it the ideal venue for a broad range of events and activities. Belvoir Castle offers guests a prestigious location for a wide array of celebrations, especially private paties. Gothic architecture and regency features frame the Castle’s expansive entertaining spaces and large parties are offered the grandeur of the State Dining Room with its open fires and ornate dÊcor. Smaller parties can choose the more intimate Shoot Room which has the benefit of an adjoining sitting room for guests to retire to and enjoy their own private drinks cabinet. The castle and park are also the perfect location for corporate away days including board meetings, product launches, clay days and simulated game shooting. With a wealth of rooms to choose from within the castle itself and over 1500 acres of parkland, the opportunities are endless. At Belvoir Castle, everything is bespoke and tailored to the needs of their client, ensuring a successful event. The dedication of the team and the sheer unrivalled beauty of the castle and grounds make it one of the most iconic destinations in the country. n countries all over the world, polo has a long history of raising significant funds for worthy causes. Wherever possible, British Polo Day is entirely committed to bringing to bear the full weight of our partners, network and creative talent to this end. Philanthropy has been a fundamental part of British Polo Day right from the very beginning and a “Gold Standard” approach has always been sought. Every pound/dollar raised at our charity auctions goes directly to the chosen charities in each country. No foundation or administration fees applied. At the behest of Alejandra Alemán and the de Alba Family, the Live Auction at British Polo Day Mexico 2015 is for the benefit of Niños en Alegría. The charity aims to improve the educational conditions of children in marginalised areas of Guerrero, so they can develop their full educational and social potential. Please do bid generously and with reckless abandon for this most worthy of causes!

Born in 1960 in Quito, Ecuador and of Spanish nationality, Carbonell emigrated to Mexico in 1986. He studied painting in Barcelona and was part of a group of young painters influenced by formalism. Carbonell feels that being an artist is not inherited and that the environment that one grows up in is more important than one’s genes. As a child, he learned from his parents a passion for music and literature. He likes to experiment and is influenced by the avant-garde. His own work is realistic in nature and combines elements of romanticism and minimalism. His paintings cover a broad spectrum of subjects and he prefers to use dancers as his models because they know how to move and are comfortable with their bodies. He captures this sensuality in his paintings and in these we recognize ourselves, our frailties, and our dreams. Carbonell currently lives in Mexico with his wife and children and teaches art at QuerÊtaro University.
