n countries all over the world, polo has a long history of raising significant funds for worthy causes. Wherever possible, British Polo Day is entirely committed to bringing to bear the full weight of our partners, network and creative talent to this end.
This year we have Lord Dalmeny (Chairman, Sotheby’s UK) as our auctioneer. He is renowned as a rare and thrilling talent, and we are incredibly fortunate to have him at the helm. Our special thanks to Lord Dalmeny for giving us his time and considerable skill today.
A ‘Gold Standard’ approach has always been sought. Every pound/dollar raised goes directly to the chosen charities in each country. There is no foundation and no administration fees applied. All BPD sourced lot proceeds get evenly distributed and all charity-sourced lots go directly to those charities.
Do participate in the iBid and Live Auction, as the underbids and winning bids really are of equal value. Success in this regard is the result of both the volume of bids as well as the tenacity of winning bidders who are prepared to compete with real zeal over their preferred lot.
Philanthropy has been a fundamental part of British Polo Day right from the very beginning and it is one of the central pillars of our global endeavours. It is the most positive realisation that such a young team has travelled the world raising life changing funds for various causes in the process. The whole thing has been made possible by the phenomenal generosity of what is now a genuinely world-spanning community and this is a humbling thought indeed.
Details on each of our wonderful charities can be found in the upcoming pages, and please also take the time to see the important Conditions of Sale for all lots on pages 84-87. As ever, as far as it is within your power to do so, please do bid with reckless abandon! The British Polo Day Fundraising Committee

T
he Born Free Foundation is a dynamic international wildlife charity, founded in 1984 by the actors Bill Travers MBE and Virginia McKenna OBE, stars of the iconic film Born Free, and their son, Will Travers OBE, today the charity’s President. Born Free takes action worldwide to save lives, stop suffering and protect species in the wild. Born Free never forgets the individual. Our emergency teams rescue vulnerable animals from appalling lives of misery in tiny cages, often barren of any enrichment, and gives them lifetime care in spacious bush sanctuaries. From small beginnings, the Born Free Foundation has grown into a global force for wildlife. But a personal passion for wild animals and desire for positive change remain at our heart. Described by The Times as ‘big enough to make a difference, but small enough to care,’ Born Free is not a big anonymous organisation, but a family of like-minded people who share the same goals. The origin of Land Rover’s historic association with Born Free goes back to the beginning where Land Rovers were featured in the classic 1966 wildlife film Born Free, starring the Foundation’s founders, Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers. The requirement was then as it is now to rely on the Land Rover vehicles to reach the wildlife in the most remote of locations. Land Rover first started working in partnership with Born Free in 2002, and are committed to continuing to provide the Foundation with practical help by supplying vehicles as well as project support, reflecting thier integrated approach to building global sustainability. The current partnership sees Land Rover vehicles deployed by the Born Free Foundation in Kenya, Ethiopia, India and South Africa where they support the charity’s vital field work. Additional support is also being provided to assist conservation and wild animal welfare initiatives in other parts of Africa and southern Asia, with a particular focus on lions and tigers, while in the UK, where the charity is based, Born Free Land Rovers assist with logistical support and charity ambassador duties. www.bornfree.org.uk

I
t is my great pleasure to welcome you today to the British Polo Day Great Britain.
For me, polo was an instant passion. The minute I took up the game I loved it. Now you can simply enjoy watching the horses and the skill of the game within the most glorious polo location in the country thanks to the Schwarzenbach family’s generosity. In 1930, Geoffrey Brooke was appointed to the command of The British Cavalry Brigade in Egypt. It was then that his spirited wife Dorothy realised she would not rest until she had found the surviving war horses there. Born and bred in the green fields of England, horses were sold into hard labour overseas after serving their country so nobly in the First World War. The powerful combination of love and respect for horses, and boundless compassion, enabled Dorothy to create an inspiring legacy. Today the Brooke is one of the most far-reaching and effective animal welfare charities in the world. Improving the lives of working equines is something I care about deeply and this is why I am proud to be a trustee. The image ‘Leaving The Kilns’ was part of a series of photographs taken by Richard Dunwoody MBE to showcase the Brooke’s work. I was so moved by this image that I bought the original which now hangs in my office. With so many lovers of the horse here today, we present an opportunity for you all to ‘put something back’ into the equestrian world, especially to those equines who suffer so much in some appalling conditions. The British Polo Day and its global series support so many good causes and I encourage you all to bid with reckless abandon!

ve Branson’s impassioned, unwavering and ongoing support for the local communities in the Berber villages in the High Atlas Mountains is a rallying cry that British Polo Day has been delighted to follow. Funds raised as a result of BPD GB 2015 will go towards sustainable initiatives and projects in these remote villages, where the focus of The Eve Branson Foundation is on capacity building and empowerment. The Foundation aims to create positive opportunities, working in partnership with each village, to bring about transformations both economically and socially. We define needs and build a spirit of trust and collaboration by working closely with village elders and have learnt that with patience and determination we can combine our entrepreneurial spirit with the Berber culture successfully. Today our initiatives include the provision of community craft houses and vocational training programmes for young women in the villages of Tansghart, Imskar, Tiwizi, Tamgounssi, Tifaouine and Asni. Women are trained by professional multi-lingual tutors to speak English and French, to embroider and knit and to create high-quality artisan products, for which we then try to establish a marketplace. We’ve seen entire communities transformed, through the provision of facilities that enhance village life and through the income-generating initiatives we’ve established. We are hugely thankful to the British Polo Day team for this great opportunity and with your support and generosity, we can help more local people to generate new income streams and enhance individual skills. “The philosophy of the foundation is to teach the local girls lifelong skills, removing the need to beg or ask for charity, for the Berbers are a proud, happy people.”

charities - HITS 14
HITS (Head Injury Through Sport) was co-founded by Sandra Cronan, Greta Morrison and myself. Each of our lives had been touched by the trauma of head injuries sustained personally or by loved ones with life-threatening consequences, whilst playing polo. Our mission at HITS is to help those who have suffered head injuries through sport by enhanced medical management and subsequent aftercare. Research has shown that recovery and a good outcome is vastly improved by early, accurate diagnosis and treatment, as well as aftercare to deal with long term disability. Our aim is to play a significant part in closing the £1.35 million target of The National Brain Appeal to create a Neuroimaging Analysis Centre at The National Hospital for Neurology & Neurosurgery. HITS is delighted to be associated with British Polo Day India – alongside the Maharaja of Jodhpur’s Indian Head Injury Foundation – as well as today’s British event, which is held here with us at our home and the base of the family’s Black Bears Polo Team. Last year’s inaugural event was a wonderful success on all fronts and I look forward to seeing this continue in the years ahead. Onwards and upwards!

t’s a heartbreaking statistic that, on average, at least two children in every primary classroom will have suffered some form of abuse or neglect. We also know that the majority of children who contact our ChildLine service for help or advice are aged over 11 and often talk about abuse that happened months or even years earlier. Through assemblies and workshops which are sensitively tailored to the age range, the NSPCC’s ground-breaking ChildLine Schools Service uses specially trained volunteers to go into schools and talk to nine to eleven year olds about abuse in order to give them the confidence to discuss it, the knowledge to prevent it, and the courage to find help if they ever need it. In Berkshire there are almost 300 primary schools and we want to reach every single one of them with our Schools Service, so that all local children can understand abuse and recognise it if it occurs. Imagine a generation of children who have the knowledge to prevent abuse. With the support of people like you and the British Polo Day team, we will be able to reach out and empower children right across Berkshire. Kind regards,
NSPCC Berkshire Branch President.

nete Dona en Vida is a non-profit organisation made up of young people dedicated to the promotion of altruistic blood donation all over the country by encouraging Mexicans to do it in a voluntary and recurring way in order to support thousands of patients who require transfusions every day. There is a great need in Mexico since only about 2% of blood donations are done for selfless reasons, making it one of the countries with the lowest rate of its kind in Latin America. We are truly grateful to the British Polo Day and all its participants for allowing us to be part of this event. Thanks to you we can continue working on building a strong foundation for altruistic blood donation in Mexico. You are now a part of our movement. Thank you.

CASA LAS

GEMELAS
DEMETRIADES
Casa Las Gemelas is a historical house located on the dramatic cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Careyes, Mexico. It is the third house of its kind designed by the famous Mexican architect, Marco Antonio Aldaco. In 1972, Lady Guiness commissioned the young architect from Guadalajara to design “the Parthenon with a thatched roof ”, as she described to him, and a new lifestyle and architecture was born. People fell in love with this indoor/ outdoor style of living. Aldaco was brought to Costa Careyes by Gian Franco Brignone, the Italian born founder of this unique area that marries Europe and Mexico. “Casa Las Gemelas” which means “House of the Twins”, was built for a lumber Baroness in 1975. Aldaco is known for his curved stucco walls, open, or partially open spaces, so that guests never lose contact with the sun, moon and breezes. He was lauded as “Mexico’s most revered architect” (by Robb Report magazine in 2006). The property is unique as it boasts 2.5 acres of oceanfront land. “I try to collaborate with nature to create vivacious designs,” says Marco Aldaco, who is on Architectural Digest’s AD100 Club for lifetime achievements. There are a total of six bedrooms and seven baths. Five spacious bedrooms in the main house and one in the detached guest palapa. There is an infinity pool and a jacuzzi perched on the side of the cliff. The home’s dramatic views, expansive tropical gardens, and welcoming interiors transport one to paradise. It is fully staffed with an English speaking butler, driver, a Cordon Bleu trained chef and housekeepers. Enjoy its refined, yet indigenes ambiance, and dedicated service like many VIPs hosted over the years such as: Oprah Winfrey, Tom Ford, Francis Ford Coppola, Steve Martin, David Copperfield, Claudia Schiffer, Diane Sawyer and Mike Nichols.

This 1 bedroom penthouse flat enjoys unparalleled 360° views of the city from a 20 metre roof terrace running the length of the appartment. It has been arranged for John Fort - who was born in London and has lived in Rome for thirty-seven years - to act as guide for a day during your stay. John was entrusted with the commission to update and completely recast Georgina Masson’s classic guide, The Companion Guide to Rome, originally published in 1964 and in print ever since. The visitors can request an itinerary that consists of seeing the city’s wellknown monuments and buildings, or going off the beaten track, or whatever may be of interest. Walks in Rome These are planned according to individual wishes, and could be the well-known sights and monuments of the city, the Colosseum, St Peter’s, Sistine Chapel and so on for first-time visitors, or slightly off the beaten track for those who already know the city, including catacombs, Christian mosaics, fountains, panoramas of the city, or one of the specialised walks below, or a mixture of all of these. Excursions in the vicinity of Rome The countryside and towns outside Rome offer a whole range of Etruscan and Roman sites and buildings, Renaissance villas, monasteries and sanctuaries going back to the earliest centuries of Christianity, as well as fine gardens, and exceptionally beautiful scenery.

Royal Salute 62 Gun Salute celebrates the Legacy of Generations by bringing together the most precious whiskies laid aside over the years by each of the four Master Blenders who have successively crafted Royal Salute since its creation: - Charles Julian from 1949 to 1960 - Allan Baillie from 1960 to 1966 - Jimmy Lang from 1966 to 1989 - Colin Scott from 1989 until today Their foresight and expertise in the art of blending has ensured a legacy of extraordinary whiskies hand-selected and passed down through generations. This blend embodies the passing on of knowledge, craftsmanship and excellence, resulting in a superior Scotch whisky steeped in heritage and stature. The luxury craftsmanship inherent to Royal Salute since its conception is extended through 62 Gun Salute’s bespoke, midnight blue crystal decanter, created by Dartington Crystal. Each double-walled crystal bottle is individually hand blown by Master Glass Blowers. The crest is painted by hand in liquid gold and completed with a gold plated collar and a glass stopper set in a gold plated crown. Each decanter is the result of 40 hours of care and attention. Royal Salute 62-Gun Salute celebrates time honoured traditions. A 62-gun salute is the highest ceremonial honour in the British tradition, fired only from the Tower of London. It is reserved for the most important Royal anniversaries, such as the coronation date, accession to the throne, or the birthday of a member of the Royal Family. Royal Salute 62 Gun Salute was launched at the Queen’s official birthday celebrations in London in June 2010, attended by HRH Prince Michael of Kent, Master Gunner at the Tower of London.

MARTYR
Title : Summer Day Medium : Acrylic on Canvas with Diamond Dust Size : 100cm x 100cm Framed : Waxed Oak Completed : 2015 This Will Martyr original painting, ‘Summer Day’, kindly donated by Magdalena ARTS, perfectly captures the intensity, power, grace and skill of both rider and horse in this beach setting. The painting is acrylic on canvas with horses depicted in black diamond dust and framed in stunning waxed oak. Artist Will Martyr is a graduate of the Slade School of Fine Art, The New York Studios School and The Royal College of Art, London. Over the past ten years, his work has been shown widely and collected internationally, with major private and corporate collectors based in the UK, North America, the Middle East, India and throughout Europe. Due to the highly collectable nature of his work, the majority of his canvases are now sold under private commission. Martyr’s painting technique is extraordinarily precise. His uncompromising process involves many stages to create hand painted flawless canvases. Martyr uses original and found images, merging and manipulating them to create new landscapes. In both his equine and architectural paintings, his skilled observation of line and shadow brings depth and balance, emphasising the horizontal with simple symmetrical planes.

IBID DONATE TAB - SUPPORT A PROJECT WITH THE EVE BRANSON FOUNDATION
T
he Eve Branson Foundation was established to support education, employment and healthcare initiatives in the rural villages of Morocco’s High Atlas Mountains. Since the beginning, the Foundation has been dedicated to enhancing living standards in some of the most impoverished communities; very often these villages lack basic amenities, illiteracy can be as high as 98% and girls often leave school at 13 with little prospects for their futures. Our aim is to create positive opportunities, working in partnership with each village, to bring about transformations both economically and socially. We define needs and build a spirit of trust and collaboration. We have learned with patience and determination how to successfully combine our entrepreneurial spirit with the Berber culture. We provide professional training for local women and girls, purchase essential crafthouse materials & resources and participate in the advancement of the rural mountain development schemes. “The philosophy of the foundation is to teach the local girls lifelong skills, removing the need to beg or ask for charity, for the Berbers are a proud, happy people.” Eve Branson

The sessions are tailored to the age range of those in the group, with topics covered in an easy to understand way, without being graphic. The service is completely free to schools and is funded by the NSPCC as we feel it’s a vital service in helping to keep all children safe.
