DRAWING THE DEFENDER AT RED WHARF BAY

When Maurice Wilks sketched a new 4x4 vehicle idea with his brother Spencer in the sand of Red Wharf Bay, Anglesey, neither of them could have recognised the significance of the moment. They had sketched what would go on to be one of the most widely revered icons in automotive history – the Land Rover. Revolutionary in its design, the original Series I Land Rover was the predecessor to the entire Defender bloodline, based on two not-so-simple demands – ‘Go anywhere, and do anything’. Fortuitously for the many thousands of Land Rover owners today, Maurice Wilks was a gifted engineer and designer. Testament to the brilliance of his vision is that 68 years later, the modern Land Rover Defender bears an uncanny resemblance to its original design in the sand.

“My father met his brother on the beach at Red Wharf Bay and made a drawing in the sand of how he thought the Land Rover could be made,” says Stephen Wilks, son of Maurice. While the sand may seem an unusual canvas, it was very typical of Wilks to draw on anything to hand, recalls his nephew Nick: “He would use whatever was in front of him to sketch out ideas: napkins, bits of paper, anything.” A napkin would not have carried quite the same romance as the rugged landscape on Red Wharf Bay, however. This also presented an irresistible opportunity to re-draw the original design in the sand, to launch a year of Defender celebrations. This time, the sketch would be larger. Much larger. The challenge to draw the UK’s largest sand drawing in history was on.

“My father met his brother on the beach at Red Wharf Bay and made a drawing in the sand. That was the start of it all – the conception of Land Rover” STEPHEN WILKS SON OF MAURICE WILKS, ENGINEERING DIRECTOR OF ROVER 1947

elcome to British Polo Day Great Britain, presented by Land Rover. Our first thank you must go to the Schwarzenbach family who are once again our generous hosts here at the Black Bears’ River Ground and we could not ask for more glorious surroundings. This event is the home leg of the British Polo Day Global Series. Over the past four years, there have been over 40 British Polo Days held in 15 countries. We are indebted to many great British brands and companies that have come together to support us globally and we thank them all for their vision. We also thank you all for coming. The British Polo Day Community continues to thrive and it is good to see many familiar faces from all over the world as well as welcoming new guests for their first British Polo Day experience. The day begins with Brompton bicycle polo. Once an Olympic sport, we have enjoyed reviving the tradition with Brompton and playing bicycle polo everywhere from royal Rajasthan to the foothills of the Atlas Mountains. Following this, today’s lunch is authored by the legendary British chef Theo Randall accompanied by wines provided by Justerini & Brooks and Royal Salute Whisky. After lunch, we will once again host The Hackett Cronan Cup for the annual British Exiles v Commonwealth match. Finally, we are delighted to host a team from Mexico, brought over here by our partners the De Alba family, to play the British Schools team. This follows the tradition of hosting each of our international partners back here annually, with Germany, India and Singapore so far having toured. One of the main objectives of the day is of course to raise as much as possible for our six chosen charities: Born Free,The Brooke,The Eve Branson Foundation, HITS, NSPCC & Dona en Vida. These charities mean a great deal to us, our partners and our friends and founders in each case. We ask you please to bid generously. We hope you have a great day! The British Polo Day Committee

nce again this year, JaegerLeCoultre is gearing up for a polo season that looks set to be a thriller. Continuing a long tradition and a long standing affiliation with the world of polo, Jaeger-LeCoultre will be involved in this new polo season sponsoring some of the best competitions around the world and being well represented on the finest polo fields by its ambassadors, fired up by sporting ambition. They will proudly sport the Reverso, the iconic polo watch designed over 83 years ago in order to withstand the blows of a polo match, while losing none of its elegance. Since 1931, the Reverso embodies elegance, teamwork and passion, qualities that are intrinsic to the world of polo.

This iconic watch was designed following an idea born on the polo fields of India from British polo players who had had enough of having their watches shattered during games. The famous reversible case was invented to protect the dial and the glass, exposing the metal back to possible shocks. From more than 80 years, the ties between the legendary swivelling case and polo have remained ingrained in the very fibres of the Reverso. JaegerLeCoultre is more closely linked to polo than ever through regular sporting partnerships in a number of countries, thanks to internationally recognized ambassadors. Today, Jaeger-LeCoultre is proud to partner with British Polo Day.

AN I N T E RVIE W WITH CH A DW IC K D E L A N E Y - MANAGING DIRECTOR JUSTERINI & BROOKS -

Tell us about the early years - how did you become one of the country’s finest wine merchants and be granted a coveted Royal Warrant? We were founded by an Italian from Bologna, who came to London chasing the affection of an opera singer. He opened Justerini’s next to the Royal Opera House, then on Pall Mall. He failed in his amorous pursuits, but the quality of the wines he was importing came to the attention of St. James’s Palace. The firm supplied the wines for King George III’s Coronation, and was granted its first Royal Warrant in 1761. We’ve now supplied wines to the Royal Household for eight successive monarchs to the present day. What in your mind has been the most seismic change in the wine world to have unfolded during your career? Domaine-bottled Burgundy - Justerini & Brooks is the biggest importer into the UK, shipping from nearly 60 producers every year. Also, increased focus on the top Italian wines. Barolo has captured the interest of Burgundy collectors looking for the next big thing, and there is much anticipation for our Brunello 2010 release this month. What view do you hold that runs most counter to any prevailing opinion when it comes to the enjoyment of wine? I believe firmly in exactly that, the enjoyment of fine wine. The reward, even for investment wines, is the pleasure of experiencing what’s inside the bottle. And I’m sure, given the lengths they go to, our producers would agree. The wine region, vineyard and/or producer that is currently exciting you the most? We recently hosted a dinner in London to celebrate 200 years of the Comte de Liger-Belair family at the Château de Vosne-Romanée in Burgundy. Louis-Michel, Le Comte de Liger-Belair, is making spellbinding wines. We tasted eight from eight different terroirs, each one stunning and creating a memory that will live long. I also adore the wines of Roberto Voerzio in Barolo – he’s one of the most gifted wine makers of his generation.

Which corners of the world are you seeing most interest from? Justerini & Brooks looks after a global client base. We began looking after overseas customers way back in 1866, initially in New York. Hong Kong started in 1976, with Singapore in 1980. There has been an explosion of wealth around the world over the past 15 years, which has led to the emergence of new private clients keen to appreciate and enjoy luxury products and experiences. Fine wine is almost peerless and limitless in its potential to deliver this intrigue and enjoyment, and today we have collectors based across 42 countries. For the layman, what single piece of advice would you give? The world of fine wine is fascinating in its complexity, rewarding in its thrilling quality. Seeking out a top merchant as a trusted guide through the regions, the growers, the vintages, will undoubtedly lead to a wine that charms you and sparks a lifetime of exploration and drinking pleasure. British Polo Day is all about the ‘young guns’ making waves internationally. Tell us about some of the young and influential wine makers that you work with? Our buyers put considerable effort into unearthing hidden talent from the burgeoning number of fresh, bright winemakers. These are growers committed to making artisan wines of balance and drinkability, like Burgundian brothers Marc and Alex Bachelet, and Thierry Pillot, who his turning Domaine Paul Pillot into one of the greats of Chassagne. I am also excited about the recent generational changes at Chateau Lafleur and Petrus, the two leading wines of Pomerol. British Polo Day is delighted to have Justerini & Brooks as its official wine partner. This is a rare partnership for you – what compelled you to become involved? British Polo Day is an international celebration of British luxury, and I am delighted to support the entrepreneurial spirit of the founders. The events are first class and highly personal, which links naturally with our approach.

RU LES OF POLO 1

The green player has the line, and at fair speed the white player would be crossing the line without a sufficient safety margin, resulting in a penalty against white.

3

When travelling in the same direction the white player may draw level with green player and then force him across the line and take possession of the ball without committing a dangerous foul.

5

Two players riding for a ball from opposite directions in the open must both give way to the left and take the ball on their right or offside.

2

Even at a far lesser angle the white player would still be crossing the line if he continues in that direction, and committing a dangerous foul.

4

The white player may move in parallel with the line and play a shot providing he can do so without interfering with the green player’s mount or causing him to check back. If white would cross the line to the dotted position it would be a foul.

6

When two players are approaching a ball in the open from different directions, the player (white), with the line of the ball on his offside, right hand side, has right of way.

EX I LES

This year at British Polo Day we are pleased to showcase Brompton bicycle polo. Brompton bicycle is the biggest bike manufacturer in the UK, with its factory in Kew, West London. Brompton’s history can be traced back to 1975, when the British inventor, Andrew Ritchie, created prototypes of Brompton bikes from his bedroom in South Kensington, London. The company remains in private hands and is now led by Will Butler-Adams OBE, though Andrew Ritchie continues to act as Technical Director. Today, Brompton bikes are sold in 44 export markets. Brompton bikes are most often seen flying around the cities, but have proven to be great steeds in the game of bicycle polo in recent years. Their speed off the mark and technical build ensure a thrilling game of bicycle polo from the first chukka to the last! Bicycle polo was invented in County Wicklow, Ireland, in 1891 by retired cyclist, Richard J. Mecredy. Two centuries on, bicycle polo is being played in over 17 countries worldwide and was officially recognised by the International Cycle Union (UCI) in 2001.

Nikolai Bahlsen is a product of British polo and, as such, is representing the British Exiles today. George Meyrick, one of the UK’s top young professionals and a seasoned highgoal player, will follow-up at number 3. George has also represented England in the International Series on two occasions. COMMONWEALTH POLO TEAM

The Commonwealth of Nations is an intergovernmental organisation of 53 member states that were mostly territories of the former British Empire. Polo thrived in these countries, and as a result many remain the leading global polo hubs. Australia, New Zealand and South Africa represent the most significant group, with many of their polo professionals choosing to base themselves in England over the summer and vice-versa. Cameron Bacon is representing the injured Guy Schwarzenbach today, as the guest US player in this Commonwealth side. He is currently a serving officer in The Blues & Royals and captained the Household Cavalry side, winning the Captains’ and Subalterns’ Trophy (the second oldest polo trophy in the world) against the Royal Navy last July. Max Gottschalk, playing at number 2, started the Les Lions polo team in the early 1990s and has been actively involved in the high goal circuit since. This will be his fourth British Polo Day cap. The Commonwealth Team will be strongly supported by two 6-goal players, Tom Hunt at number 3, and Simon Keyte at number 4.

The British Schools Polo Team has been introduced as a nod not only to the best amateur traditions of the sport, but also to institutions that are renowned and respected around the world. The transition to a sporting era of ever increasing professionalism inevitably displaces some of the spirit and charm of a bygone age. Since the assembly of the British Schools Polo Team, who in their inaugural match were victorious in obtaining the coveted Charity Cup in Great Britain, the British Schools Polo Team have since competed in Russia, China, Australia, USA and Great Britain. In number 1 is HH Maharaja Sawai Padmanabh Singh of Jaipur. With a love of horses stemming from a young age, last year marked His Higness’ first official polo season in India. Tristan Phillimore, in number 2, has played all over the UK and also in America, Argentina, France, Portugal, South Africa, and Singapore. He has been on the HPA Handicap Committee for 2 years and also organises Old Etonian polo fixtures. Jamie Morrison, who has won 2 European gold medals representing England in European Championships and the 22 goal Prince of Wales Trophy with an all English team, will join the team at number 3. Wearing the number 4 shirt is Viscount Melville, a fellow 3-goaler who has represented his country in Pakistan, Zimbabwe and Italy.

The two most significant polo areas in Mexico are Distrito Federal (based around Tecamac Polo Club just outside Mexico City) and QuerÊtaro (shared between the two polo clubs Balvanera and El Marques). There is no Pony Club system in Mexico, so these three clubs produce the majority of players that go on to represent the national team. After a lull in recent years, Mexican polo is once again growing strongly as a result of a new crop emerging from long established polo families. The next generation of players are exposed to an increasingly competitive domestic circuit as well as developing their skills in England, the U.S. and Argentina. Our visiting Mexico team is made up of Imelda de Alba, who began playing at the age of 11 and went on to win the Palacio de Hierro 15-goal tournament in Mexico with JP Clarkin and Nina Clarkin. As one of the only girls playing polo in the country, Imelda was delighted to introduce the first all-ladies match to Mexico at her home club Balvanera in 2012. Coming in at number 2, JJ de Alba has won The National Schools Championships twice and is one of the country’s fast rising talents. Luis Perez and Diego Solorazano will complete the team.
