elcome to the second British Polo Day Morocco, presented by Land Rover, here at the stunning Jnan Amar Polo Club.

We hope you agree that this is one of the most picturesque settings for a polo club in the world. We have fallen for Morocco’s people and culture in the same way that Eve Branson and her family did many years ago. We are aiming to beat the $185,000 raised last year for the Eve Branson Foundation, which is doing such great work here to improve local lives. Morocco has long-standing equestrian traditions, and we are pleased to be part of the growth of polo here in this region. The highlight of the day will of course be the Eve Branson Commonwealth team playing against the Jnan Amar Rest of the World team. The former captained by Tristan Phillimore and the latter by Amr Zedan, these two great patron-assembled teams will showcase some thrilling polo. We would like to thank Patrick Guerrand-Hermès, former President of The Federation of International Polo, who has again kindly lent his ponies today. We would also like to thank all of our partners who are supporting this event. We hope you have a wonderful day!

Dear Guests, It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to the third annual charity polo event hosted by The Jnan Amar Polo Club Marrakech for the benefit of The Eve Branson Foundation in the country that both Eve and I love - Morocco. It has truly been a privilege working closely with Eve on bringing her dream of organizing a charity polo event in Morocco to reality. The events that we hosted over the past two years were a tremendous success and the funds that were raised made a big difference to the lives of the women and children that need it the most.

welcome note - Jnan Amar

I feel proud and honoured to have played a role in making this happen. I certainly look forward to a successful repeat this year and to a long partnership between The Jnan Amar Polo Club Marrakech and The Eve Branson Foundation. I would like to sincerely thank His Majesty King Mohammad VI for his gracious patronage of this charity polo event. His support means the world to us. The Moroccan Royal Guard and The Moroccan Polo Federation have also given us their continued support and encouragement, for which we are very grateful.

My appreciation goes to Patrick Guerrand-Hermès for his valuable advice since the early stages of development and for his generous contribution to today’s event. This year our partnership with British Polo Day continues. They have truly brought our vision to life with their vast knowledge and expertise in organizing successful polo events around the world, and we’re lucky to have them as our partners. I’m happy to announce that construction will soon start of The Ritz-Carlton Hotel and The Ritz-Carlton Private Residences around the Jnan Amar polo fields. Upon completion, I hope that it will be a great addition to the beautiful, vibrant and culturally rich city of Marrakech. You are always welcome with warm greetings at our up-and-coming polo resort. I wish you all a delightful day with us at the charity polo day and the gala dinner later tonight, and for many years to come - enjoy! Amar Abdelhadi President Jnan Amar Polo Resort Marrakech

Dear Guests, You must be somewhat perplexed as to what part polo plays in the Eve Branson Foundation? Well, it started in 2006, when I persuaded my son Richard to buy a magnificent Kasbah in the Moroccan Atlas Mountains. He consented - but on one condition; that I look after all the poverty-stricken surrounding villages. Most of the villages in the higher Atlas Mountains were without water and electricity, with high rates of illiteracy. Girls leave school at 13 with few job or life prospects.

welcome note - Eve Branson

These Berber communities set great store by self-reliance, so we decided to teach them to make crafts that we could sell on their behalf, gradually building independence and a future. The Eve Branson Foundation flourished, but we needed money! Having witnessed ‘The Gold Cup’ at Cowdray, accompanied by my friend and member of Guards Polo Club, Denzil Fernandez, I thought, what better than to organise a polo match to raise money for my Foundation?

A meeting with Amar Abdelhadi, in his empty polo field at the Jnan Amar Polo Resort, made that dream a reality. I said ‘Amar, can I trust you?’. Amar looked me in the eye and said ‘But Eve, can I trust you?’. We shook hands on it and that polo tournament in 2013 made £30,000 for the Foundation. Last year we joined forces with British Polo Day and added ‘British Polo Day Morocco’ to their prestigious calendar. The event was an unprecedented success, making an incredible $185,000 for my Foundation. We hope to better that this year so we can continue our valuable work, whilst all of you, our wonderful guests, enjoy this glorious weekend! Love Eve Branson

Welcome to Morocco!

welcome note - Sir Richard Branson

This is a country that means a great deal to my family and I. We came here many years ago when I was undertaking a hot air balloon challenge and immediately fell in love with the people and the culture. As a result, my mother persuaded me to buy Kasbah Tamadot, a stunning retreat in the Atlas Mountains that I hope you will have a chance to visit. It was while we were there that Eve came across the ancient local Berber villages that inspired her to set up the Eve Branson Foundation with the aim of supporting education, employment and healthcare initiatives in these villages. In 2013 Eve came up with the idea of putting on the first polo match in Marrakech at the new Jnan Amar polo resort! An idea nobody thought would work but this was very well received and last year we were delighted to partner with The British Polo Day team, adding our event to their extensive British Polo Day series. British Polo Day bridges cultures and celebrates the heritage and traditions of the sport of polo, partnering with some of the World’s best luxury brands, such as Beautiful Destinations, Land Rover, Royal Salute and Harrods, to raise significant money for good causes, a total of $1,291,295 to date.

I was pleased to meet the British Polo Day team last year in the UAE and delighted that the relationship is going from strength to strength. I look forward to a great match! My mother is a very impressive woman, having served with the Royal Navy in World War II, among other feats, and those that know her know that she is a real force to be reckoned with! I would like to thank her and everyone involved for arranging what will be a wonderful weekend. I hope that your enjoyment as our guests this weekend will be matched by the amount that you can generously give to support the Eve Branson Foundation and its valuable work with the Berber communities of the High Atlas Mountains. Look forward to seeing you.

Sir Richard Branson

The green player has the line, and at fair speed the white player would be crossing the line without a sufficient safety margin, resulting in a penalty against white.

3

When travelling in the same direction the white player may draw level with green player and then force him across the line and take possession of the ball without committing a dangerous foul.

5

Two players riding for a ball from opposite directions in the open must both give way to the left and take the ball on their right or offside.

2

Even at a far lesser angle the white player would still be crossing the line if he continues in that direction, and committing a dangerous foul.

4

The white player may move in parallel with the line and play a shot providing he can do so without interfering with the green player’s mount or causing him to check back. If white would cross the line to the dotted position it would be a foul.

6

When two players are approaching a ball in the open from different directions, the player (white), with the line of the ball on his offside, right hand side, has right of way.

o be invited to British Polo Day Morocco 2015 as the official artist for this year’s event has been a prospect for the senses that I have been anticipating with real relish. Since 2008, charting the ructions surrounding the fall-out from the global financial crisis has inspired a deeply creative and fascinating period artistically. There is an irreversible physicality to the process and craft of etching and toning each hide and this encourages me to seek out subjects that have an inherent sense of “magma” about them. My ‘Death Of The Dollar’ works have encapsulated that 7 year period, but this is a new day, and my work is moving towards exploring the life and kinetic energy, grace and movement of sports like boxing, ballet and polo. My pioneering of a new photographic perspective - to capture “ball-eye” imagery of incredible detail - has enabled me to just scratch the surface on the timeless relationship between man and horse in polo. It all feels very new and very exciting. So much potential. As the first truly global platform for the game of polo, it is creatively the most fortuitous timing to meet British Polo Day and to be unveil & showcase this latest piece in what will become a significant body of work. 10% of the proceeds from BUMP (165cm x 300cm. Diptych, hand etched in black leather) will go towards The Eve Branson Foundation and I very much hope that this goes some way to ensuring that last year’s impressive fundraising total is bested.

A N INTE RVIE W WIT H - PATRICK GUE RRA ND -H E R MÈ S Since first visiting Morocco in the 1950’s has the country changed significantly? The Morocco of yesteryear is different to the country we find today. Of course, the world has changed. What Morocco has maintained is its passionate connection with horses, as demonstrated by Fantasia. Fantasia is a traditional Moroccan event and exhibition that shares many similarities and origins with polo. Polo therefore has a very real and relevant connection with Morocco. Morocco is clearly a destination that you are passionate about - what do you love about it? It is a country that I am very attached to for many reasons – its climate, its natural beauty and the kindness of its people. My historical attachment though is quite a particular one. I served my military service in Morocco and afterwards, had the good fortune to go into business here with Moroccan partners. Since then I have always had a very close relationship and fondness for the country. How did you come to be involved in the Jnan Amar Polo Club and what role are you going to play moving forward? Amar Abdelhadi, the owner of Jnan Amar, asked to meet with me and explained his grand vision for polo in Marrakech. I encouraged him to extend the polo facilities and put in place the foundations for a club of international calibre and status. He took my advice on board and in turn I invited him to my club in the north of

Morocco and offered the use of my horses. It was at this point that I introduced Amar to the son of an old friend, Abdou El Glaoui, a very accomplished player who is today running the club. I play a very much supportive role, and as co-President hope to share my advice, time and experience in order for Jnan Amar Polo Club to become one of the world’s great polo destinations. You had a polo club in Marrakech before. Do you feel that the sport has a natural home in the city? Yes, Marrakech has welcomed some great players in the past and is superbly located to host teams coming from the US, South America and Europe. What does the future hold for polo in Morocco? The game of polo had great success in Tangier in 1888 with what was amongst the world’s first encounters with the sport. There have been polo fields and events historically in Rabat, Meknes, Fez, Marrakech and Casablanca. As a result of the army in Morocco’s growth and development during the 20th century, many of these grounds were abandoned. There is now a real effort and interest amongst the authorities to reestablish polo’s presence in Morocco. In addition to a permanent polo ground in El Jadida, significant investment is being made to expand the country’s capability when it comes to equestrian sports. Jnan Amar Polo Club is therefore part of this grand plan and plays an important role in the future development of polo and equestrian sports in Morocco.

52

A N I N T E RV I E W W I T H - PAT R I C K G U E R R A N D - H E R M È S You are synonymous with the sport having been President of the FIP, has the sport evolved since you’ve become involved? Polo has of course changed. At one point there were very few professionals in the sport. Like all sports, today polo of a high standard is almost totally professional. It is very difficult for an enthusiast who isn’t 100% committed to the sport to achieve the highest levels of competency. To reach these levels, like all sports, investment in training, equipment and facilities is essential. What we mustn’t forget though is that there are two types of players in the game; the horse and us. We must respect that the horse can’t speak and can suffer as much as we can, so their training and maintenance is extremely important. The health, safety and wellbeing of the animals is respected enormously in polo and this is a crucial part of the sport’s evolution. Do you still play polo? Yes, I play a little bit but I can’t play competitively anymore. I have the good fortune to be surrounded by very good players though, who are careful not to bump into me.They treat me like a delicate object; a piece of crystal that they might shatter.

Where do you spend most of your time? On a plane. I have many businesses and family responsibilities, plus my obligations at my club in Chantilly. My house in the North of Morocco though is where I spend most of my time, enjoying the sunshine and watching the waves. You have spent a lifetime in the luxury sector, either at Hermès or involved in polo. How do you define the word luxury? Money is certainly not the predominant factor. Luxury is a word embedded within our family, so I am very familiar with it. For me it is a bi-product of a life’s work in pursuit of quality. The 7th generation run our family business today. Continuance is derived from quality. I am delighted to say that what I have seen in Marrakech, what is being created at Jnan Amar, is certainly a product of quality.

EX I LES

This year at British Polo Day we are pleased to showcase Brompton Bicycle Polo. Brompton Bicycle is the biggest bike manufacturer in the UK, with its factory in Kew, West London. Brompton’s history can be traced back to 1975, when the British inventor, Andrew Ritchie, created prototypes of Brompton bikes from his bedroom in South Kensington, London. The company remains in private hands and is now led by Will Butler-Adams OBE, though Andrew Ritchie continues to act as Technical Director. Today, Brompton bikes are sold in 44 export markets. Brompton bikes are most often seen flying around the cities, but have proven to be great steeds in the game of Bicycle Polo in recent years. Their speed off the mark and technical build ensure a thrilling game of Bicycle Polo from the first chukka to the last! Bicycle Polo was invented in County Wicklow, Ireland, in 1891 by retired cyclist, Richard J. Mecredy. Two centuries on, Bicycle Polo is being played in over 17 countries worldwide and was officially recognised by the International Cycle Union (UCI) in 2001.

COMMONWEALTH

The Commonwealth of Nations is an intergovernmental organisation of 53 member states that were mostly territories of the former British Empire. Polo thrived in these countries, and as a result many remain the leading global polo hubs. Australia, New Zealand and South Africa represent the most significant group, with many of their polo professionals choosing to base themselves in England over the summer and vice-versa. Today’s returning 9 goal Commonwealth Team will be seeking to build on last year’s impressive victory, and continue their impervious winning streak against an improved handicapped Jnan Amar Polo Team. As a great friend of his countryman Patrick Guerrand-Hermès, Ludo Pailloncy has been invited to join The Commonwealth side, to bring some Gallic flair to the encounter on this occasion.

The founder of Jnan Amar Polo Club, Ammar Abdelhadi, is a Saudi Arabian national, and so it is fitting that his team today is captained by the best Saudi polo player – Amr Zedan. Outside of the Commonwealth, the best polo playing country is without doubt, Argentina, which is where the remaining three players are from, although they play all over the world. This is a truly international team and the stage is set for a great contest. After last year’s narrow defeat, The Jnan Amar Polo Team returns, bolstered with reinforcements - resulting in an improved overall team handicap - to avenge The Commonwealth’s victory on their home soil.
