Dear Guests, The British Polo Day global platform has seen us celebrating British Luxury Heritage in some fantastic locations. Gala dinners on the Great Wall of China, Fashion Shows in Indian Palaces and excursions into the Atlas mountains that surround Marrakech to name but a few. All this while raising money for good causes around the world to leave a legacy far beyond what we thought was possible when we began this adventure. It is a great pleasure to welcome you for the first British Polo Day Indonesia, and the first Global Gathering of our community at Nihiwatu. British Polo Day and Nihiwatu embody the same principles of pairing unique and exceptional experiences with a considered and long-term approach to philanthropy. The work that has been undertaken on this beautiful island will have a positive effect on the communities you will meet here for many generations to come and is an achievement that the team at Nihiwatu and The Sumba Foundation should be very proud of. While you are here make sure you make the most of the incredible experiences that Nihiwatu and the surrounding areas have to offer. Ride one of Sumba’s famous horses along the beach at sunset, spot amazing ocean wildlife while snorkeling or hike to one of the private spa locations dotted along the nearby coastline. As always we are hugely appreciative of our partners for their support and our generous hosts Christopher Burch and James McBride. We also thank you all for coming, the British Polo Day Community continues to thrive and it is good to see so many familiar faces from all over the world come together to this amazing place. elcome to the Edge of Wildness on Sumba Island, one of 17,500 islands in the Indonesian Archipelago. You are in for an amazing experience. The excellence that BPD delivers using Nihiwatu as a canvas, will be life changing. We are honored to be hosting the first BPD in Indonesia. Sumba is one of the last surviving megalithic cultures on the planet. Its untouched landscape, ancient grass roofed villages and smiling inhabitants will steal your heart. Sumba is an island of great tribal horsemen, and their fast, durable horses. Sumba’s extensive grasslands make it one of Indonesia’s leading horse-breeding islands. Horses were introduced as far back as the 8th century by the Chinese and later Arabs. They traded their Mongolian and Arabian ponies for the island’s Sandalwood. Relied upon for the necessities of daily life, horses remain a symbol of wealth and status, and can still win a bride. These naturally hardy and athletic “Sandalwood Ponies” play centre stage to Sumba’s most important sports and rituals; such as racing and the native Pasola. Polo is virtually unheard of here in Sumba, but its ancient equestrian competition “The Pasola” may bear some primitive resemblances. The term Pasola is derived from the words Pa, which means ‘game’, and Sola or Hola, meaning spear or stick. The Pasola is a pre-harvest fertility ritual, divided into two teams representing opposing clans, whereby mounted riders attempt to dismount each other using their spears. The Nihiwatu BPD event is set to delight you in the most extraordinary ways, where cultures far apart come together with the mutual appreciation of great horsemanship. Our sincere thanks go to the partners who have enabled this event to take place in such a remote part of the world and our sponsors who have given generously to ensure these next days are not only filled with adventure, culture, and bliss but also plenty of bubbles. Only here does Polo meets Pasola! Enjoy the ride, Christopher Burch Founder & CEO, Burch Creative Capital and Owner, Nihiwatu James McBride Managing Partner, Nihiwatu

AN I N T E RVIE W WITH CH A DW IC K D E L A N E Y - MANAGING DIRECTOR JUSTERINI & BROOKS -

Tell us about the early years - how did you become one of the country’s finest wine merchants and be granted a coveted Royal Warrant? We were founded by an Italian from Bologna, who came to London chasing the affection of an opera singer. He opened Justerini’s next to the Royal Opera House, then on Pall Mall. He failed in his amorous pursuits, but the quality of the wines he was importing came to the attention of St. James’s Palace. The firm supplied the wines for King George III Coronation and was granted its first Royal Warrant in 1761. We’ve now supplied wines to the Royal Household for eight successive monarchs to the present day. What in your mind has been the most seismic change in the wine world to have unfolded during your career? Domaine-bottled Burgundy - Justerini & Brooks is the biggest importer into the UK, shipping from nearly 60 producers every year. Also, increased focus on the top Italian wines. Barolo has captured the interest of Burgundy collectors looking for the next big thing and there is much anticipation for our Brunello 2010 release this month. What view do you hold that runs most counter to any prevailing opinion when it comes to the enjoyment of wine? I believe firmly in exactly that, the enjoyment of fine wine. The reward, even for investment wines is the pleasure of experiencing what’s inside the bottle. And I’m sure, given the lengths they go to, our producers would agree. The wine region, vineyard and/or producer that is currently exciting you the most? We recently hosted a dinner in London to celebrate 200 years of the Comte de Liger-Belair family at the Château de Vosne-Romanée in Burgundy. Louis-Michel, Le Comte de Liger-Belair, is making spellbinding wines. We tasted eight from eight different terroirs, each one stunning and creating a memory that will live long. I also adore the wines of Roberto Voerzio in Barolo – he’s one of the most gifted wine makers of his generation.

Which corners of the world are you seeing most interest from? Justerini & Brooks looks after a global client base. We began looking after overseas customers way back in 1866, initially in New York. Hong Kong started in 1976, with Singapore in 1980. There has been an explosion of wealth around the world over the past 15 years, which has led to the emergence of new private clients keen to appreciate and enjoy luxury products and experiences. Fine wine is almost peerless and limitless in its potential to deliver this intrigue and enjoyment; and today we have collectors based across 42 countries. For the layman, what single piece of advice would you give? The world of fine wine is fascinating in its complexity, rewarding in its thrilling quality. Seeking out a top merchant as a trusted guide through the regions, the growers, the vintages, will undoubtedly lead to a wine that charms you and sparks a lifetime of exploration and drinking pleasure. British Polo Day is all about the ‘young guns’ making waves internationally. Tell us about some of the young and influential wine makers that you work with? Our buyers put considerable effort into unearthing hidden talent from the burgeoning number of fresh, bright winemakers. These are growers committed to making artisan wines of balance and drinkability, like Burgundian brothers Marc and Alex Bachelet; and Thierry Pillot, who is turning Domaine Paul Pillot into one of the greats of Chassagne. I am also excited about the recent generational changes at Chateau Lafleur and Petrus, the two leading wines of Pomerol. British Polo Day is delighted to have Justerini & Brooks as its official wine partner. This is a rare partnership for you – what compelled you to become involved? British Polo Day is an international celebration of British luxury and I am delighted to support the entrepreneurial spirit of the founders. The events are first class and highly personal, which links naturally with our approach.

All the King’s Horses They call polo The sporT of kings for a reason – it has always been played by royalty. From the moment the Persian royal family adopted the game to train the King’s Elite Cavalry, right down to our own princes, crowned heads have being riding chukkas harder than anyone. King Edward VIII was a keen player – during a tour of India in 1921 he introduced his friend, the future Earl Mountbatten of Burma, to the sport. The earl encouraged his nephew, the Duke of Edinburgh, to play and His Royal Highness co-founded the Household Brigade Polo Club. The Prince of Wales was given his first polo pony, San Quinina, at the age of 15 and first played in a team captained by his father in 1963. Both his sons, Princes William and Harry, are now keen players. Why have kings and princes always loved the sport? At Royal Salute we’d hazard a guess that it’s because the magical air surrounding monarchs finds an echo on the polo field, where man and beast – like sovereign and nation – bond to become something magnificent.

The centaur forward

The rider and the pony combine to make one player, argues Facundo Pieres. He’s the Lionel Messi of polo, a Royal Salute ambassador and supporter of the Latin America team today. “A great polo player knows the pony is 70% of the game and moves in harmony with the horse, turning and stopping with the slightest nudge of the leg or the arm,” he explains. “A bad polo player is always fighting the horse, wrenching it this way and that to get it to do their bidding.” Pieres carefully selects 10 horses for every game, changing ponies two or three times every chukka and choosing the best horses to match his opponent’s stable. “But I have four who I am perfectly in tune with, who give me confidence, who make me play better and who know my game as well as I do,” he grins, his face lighting up like a kid discussing Christmas. “I try to play these ponies at the end of every game. One, Magnifica, was the horse I was on when I scored the golden goal to win the Queen’s Cup – one of the proudest moments of my career. Could I have scored that goal on another horse? I’m not sure.”

Wild at heart

Fit for polo?

Borwick explains that all horses race in the wild – running in a herd to find out which is the fastest, strongest alpha male. Polo ponies require something more. Although a pony won’t take to the field in a competition until they’re seven, they start training before they’re two – experiencing to check and turn and run and stop. They play their first friendly game aged four, learning the pace and bustle of the field at a slower pace. “You can play a pony in a competition aged six or just over,” Borwick explains. “But it’s far better if you wait.” We couldn’t agree more.

Squat and turn: Put a pillow between your knees and stand 1ft away from the wall. Squat while squeezing the pillow, and rotate your trunk from side to side, touching the wall with both hands each time. Repeat eight times. Overhead side slams: Raise a medicine ball above your head. Rotate your trunk to your right and slam the ball to the floor. Squat, grab the ball, and repeat on the other side. Repeat five times. Lunge with twist: Stand with legs hip-width apart and hands behind your head. Step forwards into a lunge until the rear knee almost touches the floor. Rotate towards the lunging leg. Repeat on the other side for two sets of three lunges per side.

Training a polo pony takes time – and at Royal Salute, that’s something we understand. Our youngest bottle, after all, contains whiskies that are at least 21 years old. “You can rush a polo pony’s training, but you’ll get a horse that plays worse and has a shorter career,” explains Royal Salute ambassador and England’s prince of polo Malcolm Borwick, who’s backing England, of course.

Royal Salute delights in the dedication and craft of polo players. But we realise this is far from an overnight game. Players swing a 500g mallet with wild abandon, and require an iron core, rock-hard shoulders and sturdy back to avoid injury. Martin Perez at Fitness for Polo suggests the following pro-player exercises – which also promise washboard abs and a powerful stride…

TH E SU M B A F O U NDAT I O N The mission of the Sumba Foundation is to alleviate poverty in Sumba by providing: access to potable water, an end to malaria, general health, and education. With these tools, the people of Sumba have the means to lift themselves out of poverty and create sustainable economies to better their own livelihoods. The Sumba Foundation strives to provide these needs to the people. In so doing we are confident that we will have built the foundation for a better life and a way to end poverty on the island. Our aid plan is based on more than sixteen years of firsthand knowledge of the island and its people. In those years we have closely observed the way of life of the Sumbanese and we have consulted with them about their most urgent needs and aspirations. We have also gathered information from anthropologists, foreign volunteers, aid workers and the government. Our aid philosophy is to help the people to help themselves, we do not believe in giving ongoing handouts or spending large sums of money to solve problems. The Sumba Foundation believes that small projects, that are well managed and cost efficient, bring the best results.

The Sumba Foundation was founded in 2001 to lessen the harsh impacts of poverty on the Indonesian island of Sumba. The Foundation aims to achieve this through village-based projects focusing on: access to potable water, ending malaria, general health, and education, while preserving and respecting the cultural traditions of its people. The Foundation believes that each and every one of us has a responsibility to better use our position and resources to help people living in poverty realize their needs and vision of a better world. It is not simply about sharing our resources with others in need, but perhaps more importantly, it is about getting involved in the world around us with the goal of gaining a new perspective. The Sumba Foundation’s work is rooted in the knowledge that the most effective actions must come from within the context of our own lives and hearts. As members of the human family, each of us is responsible. All of us are accountable.

RU LES OF POLO 1

The green player has the line, and at fair speed the white player would be crossing the line without a sufficient safety margin, resulting in a penalty against white.

3

When travelling in the same direction the white player may draw level with green player and then force him across the line and take possession of the ball without committing a dangerous foul.

5

Two players riding for a ball from opposite directions in the open must both give way to the left and take the ball on their right or offside.

2

Even at a far lesser angle the white player would still be crossing the line if he continues in that direction, and committing a dangerous foul.

4

The white player may move in parallel with the line and play a shot providing he can do so without interfering with the green player’s mount or causing him to check back. If white would cross the line to the dotted position it would be a foul.

6

When two players are approaching a ball in the open from different directions, the player (white), with the line of the ball on his offside, right hand side, has right of way.

NIHIWATU

This year being the inaugural British Polo Day Nihiwatu, we are pleased to debut and include this new side into the British Polo Day fold. The Sumba Foundation Nihiwatu I will be facing the well established Hackett British Exiles for the coveted Pasola Plate, with Nihiwatu I wearing the striking black polo shirt livery with orange detailing. In the second game, the RJI Capital Nihiwatu II team come up against Royal Salute Rest of The World, with Nihiwatu II donning the predominantly orange polo shirt with white detailing. The founding of the Nihiwatu Polo Team speaks to the origin of a sport forged where deep ties to the horse pre-existed as an integral part of the local culture. A fascinating exercise - part harking back and part current outlook for all the players involved in polo on The Edge of Wildness.

The Hon. Tristan Phillimore Player - British Exiles Tristan was introduced to polo somewhat reluctantly at the age of 15 in the Pony Club, but soon found a way to combine education and polo at the University of Virginia. Some twenty plus years later he still finds time to play on weekends in the UK or on any foreign field that is kind enough to host him. Tristan helps run Binfield Heath Polo Club and has been a committee member of the Hurlingham Polo Association, he has also run Old Etonian Polo for nearly twenty years with annual fixtures against the arch rival Harrow School. Outside of polo Tristan is involved in property development and management both on a personal and professional level. He suffers from the incurable ill that every time he sees a flat piece of land he imagines its potential as a polo field. Tristan has now attended and played in more than 10 BPD events and looks forward to the next country that can be ticked off the list thanks to this shared passion of this great equine sport.

Dr. Claus Bogh

Health & Finance Director - The Sumba Foundation Dr. Claus Bogh is the Health and Finance Director for The Sumba Foundation. Claus has an MSc and PhD in Medical Entomology and did malaria research in Kenya, The Gambia, and Mozambique for 5 years before moving to Indonesia in 2001. He served as senior Malaria Control Advisor to the Indonesian Ministry of Health from 2001 to 2004 under the Asian Development Bank’s ICDC program. During this period he regularly worked on the island of Sumba and by random chance came across The Sumba Foundation in 2003. The love for the island, its people and the very high occurrence of malaria were all factors that contributed to his long-term commitment to Sumba. Claus developed the Malaria Control Strategy for The Sumba Foundation, while still working in the Indonesian Ministry of Health and joined the Foundation in 2004.
