elcome to the 2nd British Polo Day USA presented by Land Rover! Will Rogers Polo Club is the only remaining polo ground in Los Angeles, the lasting legacy from a peak of over 25 back in the 1930s. The club is also enjoying something of a revived ‘golden age’ as a result of the great passion, dynamism and humour of current Club President – our host and Old Etonian – Andrew Bossom. There is another British influence at large ensuring that this US leg remains a private and splendid occasion, and a leading light in what is now a 10-event annual cycle spanning the globe. Lord and Lady Frederick Windsor have called LA their home for several years, and their galvanising of a genuinely wonderful local and international community means that this event will continue to set the escalating precedent when it comes to the company that we are all lucky enough to keep on the day. The ‘special relationship’ is an overused and abused expression and one that is certainly less resonant on ‘this side of the pond’. The strong bonds between the US and Britain do however mean something very real to British Polo Day. Ed Olver (CEO and Co-Founder) and Ben Vestey (MD and Partner) served ‘shoulder-to-shoulder’ with young American troops when deployed to Iraq during their time in The Household Cavalry. Over $1.5 million USD has now been raised at British Polo Days around the world for various causes, and America eclipses all other nations in this regard in a manner that is genuinely humbling from an outside perspective. There is so much more that British Polo Day’s young team soaks up during thier time in this great country… Californian thought leadership, the allure of Hollywood, the sunshine and - and, perhaps above all else, the genuine support and positivity that is shown towards a young business on the move. As ever, we would like to thank our global and local partners for their commitment and contribution to all that we do. We would like to thank Andrew and the Bossom family as well as Freddie and Sophie for ensuring that the whole show is a delight to bring together and we would like to thank you in advance for showing gleeful generosity to our two game-changing charities over the course of the six lot Live Auction. We do hope that you have an excellent day!

lthough expectations for last year’s inaugural British Polo Day USA were high, the excitement, charm and elegance - not to mention fundraising success – on display were nevertheless a pleasant surprise. My wife Sophie and I are delighted to be actively involved in this rare and special global endeavour. Los Angeles has been our home for nearly six years and there is something deeply satisfying about celebrating the very best of Britain and the United States as part of a much wider global undertaking. This event will continue to flourish and, on behalf of all the guests, my thanks go to our generous host Andrew Bossom - a fellow Old Etonian - for kindly welcoming us to Will Rogers Polo Club for a second year. In a town where there is plenty of competition for stellar events, I have no doubt that an invitation to British Polo Day will become increasingly desirable. On behalf of the British contingent, welcome to the second British Polo Day USA.
We do hope that you have an excellent day!

nce again this year, JaegerLeCoultre is gearing up for a polo season that looks set to be a thriller. Continuing a long tradition and a long standing affiliation with the world of polo, Jaeger-LeCoultre will be involved in this new polo season sponsoring some of the best competitions around the world and being well represented on the finest polo fields by its ambassadors, fired up by sporting ambition. They will proudly sport the Reverso, the iconic polo watch designed over 83 years ago in order to withstand the blows of a polo match, while losing none of its elegance. Since 1931, the Reverso embodies elegance, teamwork and passion, qualities that are intrinsic to the world of polo.
This iconic watch was designed following an idea born on the polo fields of India from British polo players who had had enough of having their watches shattered during games. The famous reversible case was invented to protect the dial and the glass, exposing the metal back to possible shocks. From more than 80 years, the ties between the legendary swivelling case and polo have remained ingrained in the very fibres of the Reverso. JaegerLeCoultre is more closely linked to polo than ever through regular sporting partnerships in a number of countries, thanks to internationally recognized ambassadors. Today, Jaeger-LeCoultre is proud to partner with British Polo Day.

RU LES OF POLO 1
The green player has the line, and at fair speed the white player would be crossing the line without a sufficient safety margin, resulting in a penalty against white.
3
When travelling in the same direction the white player may draw level with green player and then force him across the line and take possession of the ball without committing a dangerous foul.
5
Two players riding for a ball from opposite directions in the open must both give way to the left and take the ball on their right or offside.
2
Even at a far lesser angle the white player would still be crossing the line if he continues in that direction, and committing a dangerous foul.
4
The white player may move in parallel with the line and play a shot providing he can do so without interfering with the green player’s mount or causing him to check back. If white would cross the line to the dotted position it would be a foul.
6
When two players are approaching a ball in the open from different directions, the player (white), with the line of the ball on his offside, right hand side, has right of way.

This year at British Polo Day we are pleased to showcase Brompton bicycle polo. Brompton Bicycle is the biggest bike manufacturer in the UK, with its factory in Kew, West London. Brompton’s history can be traced back to 1975, when the British inventor, Andrew Ritchie, created prototypes of Brompton bikes from his bedroom in South Kensington, London. The company remains in private hands and is now led by Will Butler-Adams OBE, though Andrew Ritchie continues to act as Technical Director. Today, Brompton bikes are sold in 44 export markets. Brompton bikes are most often seen flying around the cities, but have proven to be great steeds in the game of Bicycle Polo in recent years. Their speed off the mark and technical build ensure a thrilling game of Bicycle Polo from the first chukka to the last! Bicycle Polo was invented in County Wicklow, Ireland, in 1891 by retired cyclist, Richard J. Mecredy. Two centuries on, Bicycle Polo is being played in over 17 countries worldwide and was officially recognised by the International Cycle Union (UCI) in 2001.

Today’s visiting Harrow team is captained by Rupert Lewis (1). Lewis is joined by Nikolai Bahlsen (1), Adrian de Montfalcon (0) and our host and old Etonian, Andrew Bossom (0). Harrow has also been represented at British Polo Days in both Dubai and Singapore, against their closest and oldest rivals Eton, which makes today’s defection of Andrew Bossom even more intriguing. Harrow too boasts some other famous polo players - Jack Kidd in the modern era, a 4 goal player, as well as Jack Richardson and Richard Le Poer, and, perhaps most famous of all, Sir Winston Churchill. Lord Byron also famously played in one of the earliest sporting encounters between these two schools.

WILL ROGERS POLO CLUB
The Will Rogers Polo Club was of course the private estate of Will Rogers. In fact, Will Rogers landscaped the polo field in 1926, before he even built his home! After Will’s death in 1935, his wife Betty donated the estate as a gift to the State of California (1944) on the condition that equestrian activities continue at the park. In 1953, the legendary C.D. LeBlanc started the Will Rogers Polo Club, making it the thirteenth oldest polo club in the United States, rich in tradition and enthusiasm. Despite last year’s narrow loss to a potent Eton team, the Will Rogers team will seek to restore pride on its home turf against another of England’s prestigious schooling teams - Harrow. Imelda de Alba (0), our host and partner in Mexico, joins the Will Rogers roster after a short flight from Querétaro, whilst Tom Shuerman (0), Sean Goel (0) and Graydon Brittan (1) complete this impressive line-up.

The British Schools Polo Team has been introduced as a nod not only to the best amateur traditions of the sport, but also to institutions that are renowned and respected around the world. The transition to a sporting era of ever increasing professionalism inevitably displaces some of the spirit and charm of a bygone age. Since the assembly of The British Schools Polo Team, who in their inaugural match were victorious in obtaining the coveted Charity Cup in Great Britain, the British Schools Polo Team have since competed in Russia, China, Australia and now USA. On the back of two losses, the team will be determined to get back to winning ways against a vigorous Southern California Polo Team. Today’s British Schools Team sees Dillon Bacon (1) and Chevy Beh (3) earn thier first BPD caps. The team is completed with the well travelled Max Kirchhoff (0) and Tom Meacher (1).

n countries all over the world, polo has a long history of raising significant funds for worthy causes. Wherever possible, British Polo Day is entirely committed to bringing to bear the full weight of our partners, network and creative talent to this end. In partnership with our host in each case, British Polo Day divides the fund raising proceeds from charity auctions and raffles that are held at any event between local and British charities. In so doing, the polo ties between two nations are reinforced further through shared philanthropic aims. Homeboy Industries was last year introduced to British Polo Day by the formidable Wendy Stark, who is a great friend of Lord Frederick Windsor and his wife Sophie. BPD’s two CoFounders Ed Olver and Tom Hudson as well as MD & Partner Ben Vestey have all served time in The British Army. This experience illuminated the transformative change on difficult lives that can come about as a result of the foundations of ‘community’. Father Greg’s longstanding and often frontline commitment to a better life for gang members in Los Angeles chimes with the directors of BPD.
Homeboy Industries will remain a cause that is supported year-on-year at BPD USA. We will raise what we can to support their work in transforming lives and the virtuous circle that this entails. This year sees the addition of the UK Stem Cell Foundation (UKSCF). Our great friend & local ally from last year’s event Kevin Schallert sustained a spinal injury within the past 12 months. It has been remarkable to see the modern miracle of a rehabilitation process carried out on Facebook and the upswell of support and goodwill that has flown continuously throughout to bolster Kevin and his family’s very real day-to-day recovery endeavours todate. It is also a new age for spinal research and UKSCF are at the forefront of pioneering work that will have profound impacts on the lives of those like Kevin, who are determined to live life to the full. THE UK STEM CELL FOUNDATION TO PARTNER BRITISH POLO DAY IN THE US: "Playing polo is like trying to play golf during an earthquake." -‐ Sylvester Stallone The UK Stem Cell Foundation (UKSCF) today announces a fundraising and strategic partnership with British Polo Day. British Polo Day was Co-‐Founded by Tom Hudson and Ed Olver in 2009 based on some very prescient thinking around the personal nature of building meaningful and lasting relationships with the most elevated & interesting people worldwide. Since inception in Dubai, BPD has produced 34 invitation only events in 14 different countries. Philanthropy has been a fundamental part of British Polo Day right from the very beginning. An early collaborative event – hosted by Lord Lloyd Webber at his Watership Down estate – raised over £85,150 in the summer of 2011. The inaugural BPD USA was held in 2014 at Will Rogers Polo Club – right in the heart of Los Angeles and the last remaining polo field in The City – and supported local Charity Homeboy Industries. Founded by Father Greg Boyle (best know as Father G) in 1992, Homeboy Industries is now one of the largest gang intervention, rehabilitation and re-‐entry programs in the country. The nomination of UKSCF as BPD USA’s British beneficiary means that two charities whose work will have global ramifications are now being supported and championed year-‐on-‐year at this flagship fundraising event in British Polo Day’s 10-‐event annual calendar. Speaking about the announcement, British Polo Day Co-‐Founder Tom Hudson said: “It is quite something that a running total of $1,256,295 USD has now been raised to-‐date as a result of British Polo Day and every penny has gone directly to a diverse range of worthy causes. The US – unquestionably the world leaders when it comes to philanthropy – represents the best opportunity not only to raise escalating amounts for the UKCSF and Homeboy Industries but also for their “game-‐changing” endeavours to be brought to the attention of international and regional thought leaders in California.” Sir Richard Sykes, Chairman of the UK Stem Cell Foundation: "For the last 10 years the UK Stem Cell Foundation has been supporting British science, medicine and development in stem cell research and has enabled British scientists to achieve some impressive and exciting results. Stem cell research and therapies hold enormous potential in improving medical treatments for those suffering from debilitating chronic diseases and disabilities, including MS, diabetes, heart disease and spinal cord injury. We are incredibly fortunate to have partnered with the British Polo Day -‐ a hugely successful global brand. We are looking forward to the event in LA and a long-‐standing relationship with the British Polo Day team”.

In the 1980s, the city of Los Angeles was struggling to deal with escalating gang violence and gang membership. At that time, Boyle Heights had more gang members per capita than any other place in the country. Around that time, Father Greg realised, with the help of many people in his parish, that he needed to provide jobs and education as alternatives to the gangs and the senseless violence they create. So, ‘Jobs for a Future’, was started as part of Dolores Mission in 1988. ‘Jobs for a Future’ later became Homeboy Industries in 2001, and has grown to become one of the largest, most comprehensive and most successful gang intervention, rehabilitation and re-entry programmes in the country. As one of the largest gang intervention, rehabilitation and re-entry programs in the country, Homeboy Industries has helped nurture into existence 46 similar programs in the United States (and several outside). The goal is to create a movement in this country to address the lethal absence of hope among inner-city youth. A dream would be to formalize a ‘National Homeboy Network’ to ignite further this model of social enterprise, a therapeutic community, healing, intentional
attachment repair and jobs/skills training as an ‘exit ramp’ for those stuck in a cycle of violence and incarceration. Convening and sharing strategies, best practices and a common vision will be the hope for the future of the National Homeboy Network. Solidifying our services through implementation of lessons learned from the convention, reconvening to share results and advancing the movement are Homeboy’s dreams for the coming years. Part of Homeboy’s wish is to broaden further the impact of our service delivery model by establishing and building partnerships with peer organizations who can become a part of the National Homeboy Network “Homeboy Industries has been the tipping point to change the metaphors around gangs and how we deal with them in Los Angeles County. This organization has engaged the imagination of 120,000 gang members and helped them to envision an exit ramp off the ‘freeway’ of violence, addiction and incarceration. And the country has taken notice. We have helped more than 40 other organizations replicate elements of our service delivery model, broadening further the understanding that community trumps gang -- every time.” Father Greg

Tasmin Lonsdale Founder - The Supper Club Tamsin has had a lifetime of socialising and networking to hone her craft. As the daughter of fashion guru Tony Lonsdale and model Chekkie Maskell, she has become a renowned society hostess. The Supper Club was born after Tamsin graduated from Edinburgh University’s business programme with first class honours and began traveling the world as an in-demand fashion stylist. She soon noticed a recurring trend among the talented men and women she met and worked with - the need for a way to consistently meet and connect with interesting, likeminded others. Her little black book began to blossom as she started hosting dinner parties that quickly resulted in new friendships, romances, and successful business ventures.
Ebe Sievwright Commentator & Master of Ceremonies Ebe has been playing polo since he was 14 and now plays, teaches and commentates for polo all over the world. Aged 17 he was awarded a Hurlingham Polo Association scholarship and subsequently lived in Argentina for a year learning how to school polo ponies and preparing to play polo professionally. Good sense prevailed and he decided to go to university in Edinburgh, Scotland but he always maintained one foot in the polo world, and now works at the prestigious Guards Polo Club. As a professional, he has played high goal for the Black Bears and Azzura polo teams, winning the Swiss open with Javier and Eduardo Novillo-Astrada, and has played in Queen’s Cup 22 goal matches with Marcos Heguy and Nacho Novillo Astrada.
