China’s love affair with polo is long established: first played by the Persians 2,500 years ago, the game was quickly adopted by the Tang Dynasty (618-907 A.D.) and China soon became the world’s leading polo nation, in fact 18 out of the 22 Tang Dynasty Emperors were keen polo players. Polo, or “jiju” as it was then called, was appreciated as a form of entertainment but also used as an important tool for diplomacy. The Tang Polo Club is committed to preserving these valued traditions. The modern game of polo as we know it, was reinvented and codified by the British in the 19th Century. It since continues to be an effective platform for consolidating global relations, as well as being wonderfully enjoyable. As such, British Polo Day China is honoured to celebrate the shared heritage of these two great nations. We have always asserted that the horse represents an international language, with the power to bridge cultures. To this tune we are delighted that this event provides an opportunity for us all to come together once again. AN INTERVIEW WITH CHADWICK DELANEY - MA N A G I NG D I R E C T O R J US T E R I NI & BROOK S Tell us about the early years - how did you become one of the country’s finest wine merchants and be granted a coveted Royal Warrant? We were founded by an Italian from Bologna, who came to London chasing the affection of an opera singer. He opened Justerini’s next to the Royal Opera House, then on Pall Mall. He failed in his amorous pursuits, but the quality of the wines he was importing came to the attention of St. James’s Palace. The firm supplied the wines for King George III Coronation and was granted its first Royal Warrant in 1761. We’ve now supplied wines to the Royal Household for eight successive monarchs to the present day. What in your mind has been the most seismic change in the wine world to have unfolded during your career? Domaine-bottled Burgundy - Justerini & Brooks is the biggest importer into the UK, shipping from nearly 60 producers every year. Also, increased focus on the top Italian wines. Barolo has captured the interest of Burgundy collectors looking for the next big thing and there is much anticipation for our Brunello 2010 release this month. What view do you hold that runs most counter to any prevailing opinion when it comes to the enjoyment of wine? I believe firmly in exactly that, the enjoyment of fine wine. The reward, even for investment wines is the pleasure of experiencing what’s inside the bottle. And I’m sure, given the lengths they go to, our producers would agree. The wine region, vineyard and/or producer that is currently exciting you the most? We recently hosted a dinner in London to celebrate 200 years of the Comte de Liger-Belair family at the Château de Vosne-Romanée in Burgundy. LouisMichel, Le Comte de Liger-Belair, is making spellbinding wines. We tasted eight from eight different terroirs, each one stunning and creating a memory that will live long. I also adore the wines of Roberto Voerzio in Barolo – he’s one of the most gifted wine makers of his generation.
Which corners of the world are you seeing most interest from? Justerini & Brooks looks after a global client base. We began looking after overseas customers way back in 1866, initially in New York. Hong Kong started in 1976, with Singapore in 1980. There has been an explosion of wealth around the world over the past 15 years, which has led to the emergence of new private clients keen to appreciate and enjoy luxury products and experiences. Fine wine is almost peerless and limitless in its potential to deliver this intrigue and enjoyment; and today we have collectors based across 42 countries. For the layman, what single piece of advice would you give? The world of fine wine is fascinating in its complexity, rewarding in its thrilling quality. Seeking out a top merchant as a trusted guide through the regions, the growers, the vintages, will undoubtedly lead to a wine that charms you and sparks a lifetime of exploration and drinking pleasure. British Polo Day is all about the ‘young guns’ making waves internationally. Tell us about some of the young and influential wine makers that you work with? Our buyers put considerable effort into unearthing hidden talent from the burgeoning number of fresh, bright winemakers. These are growers committed to making artisan wines of balance and drinkability, like Burgundian brothers Marc and Alex Bachelet; and Thierry Pillot, who is turning Domaine Paul Pillot into one of the greats of Chassagne. I am also excited about the recent generational changes at Chateau Lafleur and Petrus, the two leading wines of Pomerol. British Polo Day is delighted to have Justerini & Brooks as its official wine partner. This is a rare partnership for you – what compelled you to become involved? British Polo Day is an international celebration of British luxury and I am delighted to support the entrepreneurial spirit of the founders. The green player has the line, and at fair speed the white player would be crossing the line without a sufficient safety margin, resulting in a penalty against white.

When travelling in the same direction the white player may draw level with green player and then force him across the line and take possession of the ball without committing a dangerous foul.

Two players riding for a ball from opposite directions in the open must both give way to the left and take the ball on their right or offside.

Brompton Bicycle is the largest bike manufacturer in the UK, with its factory in Greenford, West London. Brompton’s history can be traced back to 1975, when the British inventor, Andrew Ritchie, created prototypes of Brompton bikes from his bedroom in South Kensington, London. The Commonwealth of Nations is an intergovernmental organization, comprising 53 member states, most of which were territories of the former British Empire. Historically, polo has thrived in these countries, especially Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, which represent perhaps the most significant of the global polo hubs. The RJI Capital Commonwealth Team will be lead by New Zealander, Thomas Hunt, who boasts an impressive 6-goal handicap. Thomas and fellow teammate Sam Stott, an up-and-coming Australian player, have both been based at Black Bears Polo Club this summer, home to BPD GB. Sam Gairdner, owner of Bakers Bridge Polo just outside Melbourne will also join the team, earning his first BPD Cap. BRITISH POLO DAY Grace Chen Shanghai based Chinese - American designer Grace Chen was the first Chinese graduate of the world famous fashion school FIT in New York. Following her childhood dream, she became a well known designer on 7th Avenue, and designed red carpet gowns for many Hollywood stars. In 2009, Grace returned to Shanghai and founded her own brand Grace Chen, a brand that dedicated to the style appealing to the growing Chinese female elites. A most trusted designer of the U.S. entertainment and political celebrities ten years ago, she is now hailed by the South China Morning Post as the “Power Dresser of China�. Grace Chen is a marriage of universal values of fashion, luxury appeal of western couture, and the delicate authenticity of oriental style.
Dato Chevy Beh Player - British Schools Dato Chevy Beh attended high school in Wellington College, Berkshire, UK. He then went on to be a University of Virginia (UVA) Polo Scholar where he was captain of the Collegiate Polo Team and was merited the National American-Intercollegiate all stars, America. Prior to that, he was the England polo captain for under-21 English School National Team. He made history by being the 1st Asian to be awarded with American all stars and also the 1st Asian to play in the 1st snow polo event in Asia held in Tianjin China. Outside of polo, Chevy is the Founder of BookDoc, a multi-sided online & mobile platform that improves access to healthcare products and services. Consumers may access healthcare professionals anytime, anywhere bringing forth timely access, resource optimisation, and informed choices. Launched in 2015, BookDoc is now available in Malaysia, Singapore, and Hong Kong and Thailand.
PERSONALITIES Michael Ward Managing Director - Harrods Michael began his career in chartered accountancy, training originally with Ernst and Young in 1980, before taking his first Group Finance Director position at Bassett Foods PLC in 1986 gaining an MBA during this time. It was in 2005 that the opportunity came to take up his current role of Managing Director at Harrods Ltd. Michael has embarked on a programme of significant business development, growing Harrods into the unrivalled, successful retail model it is today, while overseeing a smooth transition to new owners in Qatar Holding. More recently, this has involved further investment including Super Brands and Shoe Heaven. Michael is Chairman of Walpole and was President of the European Cultural and Creative Alliance from 2014 – 2015.
Brett Burns Player - Commonwealth Brett Burns is a founding Partner of the Melbournebased, corporate law firm, CBW Partners and previously worked in a variety of prominent roles within government, national and international law firms and ASX Top 50 Companies. Having grown up on large sheep and cattle stations in rural Australia, Brett could ride before he could walk. Over the years he’s engaged in many equestrian activities, including eventing, show jumping, dressage and hunting. Despite his strong equestrian background, Brett is a recent convert to the sport of polo, for which he is now a stalwart advocate. Not least because it was through polo that Brett met his beautiful wife. When not running CBW Partners or being thoroughly distracted by polo, Brett likes to fly planes to and from his rural estate and race Ducati superbikes. Not to mention that he’s an avid aficionado of the Porsche 911.
