elcome to the seventh British Polo Day Dubai, presented by Land Rover. For those who have been here before, it is good to have you back, and for those who are here for the first time, you are in for a thrilling afternoon of polo and a celebration of heritage and tradition with our hosts here in Dubai. Polo began in Persia as early as the 5th century BC. The modern game as we know it was rediscovered in India in the 19th century by the British Army and exported around the world. It is therefore fitting that we start proceedings off today with the Hackett Thesiger Cavalry vs. Guards Camel Polo match. For those new to camel polo, this is an intriguing spectacle. Both Cavalry and Guards regiments of the British Army had camel divisions in the nineteenth century and we are pleased to be once again reviving the association between these fascinating animals and groups of regiments. The Thesiger Trophy, beautifully sculpted by George Bingham, is modelled on a photo that Sir Wilfred Thesiger took of HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan over 60 years ago. Sir Wilfred Thesiger also embodies the essence of today,
having gone to Eton, Oxford and served in the British Army. He came to the UAE and made lifelong friends, being awarded the UAE Order of Independence. It is that friendship between the UK and the UAE that we celebrate with this event. There will also be a Brompton bicycle polo exhibition, which showcases another version of the game that was an Olympic sport back in 1906. The Falcon Plate features Oxbridge vs. the Gulf Polo Team. The two university towns that form the Oxbridge name have been pitted against each other for years and this match will continue a historic sporting tradition with our hosts here in the UAE. Finally, The British Exiles Team vs. Habtoor Polo Team is the climax of the day, with both sides competing for The British Polo Day Cup. As ever, we are indebted to all the parnters for making this event possible. In particular, Habtoor Polo who have once again very generously provided the ponies and who are here this afternoon. Dear Friends, Style, speed, skill, dash, fun and excellence - the very British attributes of the very British Polo Days in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Very British, but also very international: we invent the game, or at least refine it, put our stamp on it and welcome everyone to join it and enjoy it. And polo, along with other equestrian sports, exemplifies the strong links between British and Emirati heritage past, present and - I am sure - future. The Al Nahyan and the Al Maktoum families are great patrons and practitioners of equestrian sport and skill, as of course are Her Majesty The Queen and many of her family. His Royal Highness Prince Harry led a very successful evening of polo at Ghantoot In aid of his Sentebale charity last year. The British Polo Days also exemplify the UAE’s role as an international sporting arena - for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the Dubai Rugby Sevens, the Dubai World Cup, the World Tennis Championships, the Volvo Ocean Race, and too many others to list here. Not forgetting also Emirati involvement in the Barclays Premier League, with links between Abu Dhabi and Manchester City, and also Dubai and Arsenal. No wonder the UAE is home to and a destination for so many Brits. Over 120,000 of us live here, and a million visit each year, over 4,000 British companies operate here, and more are coming to the market every month. Our ‘GREAT Week UAE’, which is designed to encourage some of those British newcomers, coincides with the British Polo Day in Abu Dhabi this year. And the British Polo Day sponsors demonstrate that the United Kingdom is second to none in innovation, flair and creativity. So, many thanks to all our British and Emirati friends whose hard work makes the British Polo Day possible, good luck to the competitors, and the very best of a British day out to the spectators!

- Lucas Monteverde Lucas Monteverde has a handicap of 9 (formerly 10). He grew up near the town of 25 de Mayo, Buenos Aires Province, at the estancia El Rincón. The ranch is run by his father Lucas, and uncle Marcelo Monteverde, one of the world’s most successful coaches. Over the years, British Polo Day Managing Director & Partner Ben Vestey has been one of many players fortunate enough to spend time perfecting his game with Lucas and the Monteverde family. After winning the Argentine Open with La Dolfina in 2007, by scoring the “golden goal” in extra time, Monteverde achieved the pinnacle of the sport by being promoted to a 10goal handicap. The following year, this gave La Dolfina the distinction of a perfect 40-goal handicap across the team. In an illustrious ongoing career, Monteverde has amongst others won The Cowdray Park Gold Cup British Open,The Argentine Open,The Deauville Gold Cup and The Sotogrande Gold Cup.
- Pablo MacDonough As one of a handful of 10-goal players, Pablo MacDonough remains one of the principle polo talents in the world. Having played at BPD GB 2011, which was hosted by Lord Lloyd-Webber’s at his Watership Down estate, Pablo will collect his second cap at BPD Dubai 2015. There are scant trophies of note that he has yet to claim - in many cases repeatedly - and his haul of successes include: The Argentine Open (2), The Cowdray Park Gold Cup British Open (1), The Hurlingham Open (4), The Queen’s Cup (2), The Tortugas Open (5), The Sotogrande Gold Cup (2).

The Cavalry & Guards Club is a gentleman’s club in Piccadilly, London. It is open to officers who have served and are serving in one of the Cavalry or Guards regiments of the British Army. The present club was formed by the merger of the Cavalry Club and the Guards’ Club in 1976. Begun by Captain Weatherall, 20th Hussars, in 1907 this prestigious club has been occupied by The British Army for over 100 years and has strong links to the ancient sport of polo. Man has ridden camels almost as long as he has ridden horses, so it was only natural that after horse polo was developed camel polo followed. Today we welcome teams from the Cavalry & Guards regiments of The British Army who had camel units in Africa and Asia during the nineteenth century. Camel polo was pioneered at British Polo Day Dubai in 2010 and was picked up by CNN and broadcast globally. Its success has continued and it is now a staple in the UAE, and we are delighted to continue this tradition once again this year.

This year at British Polo Day we are pleased to showcase Brompton Bicycle Polo. Brompton is the biggest bicycle manufacturer in the UK, with its factory in Kew, West London. Brompton’s history can be traced back to 1975, when the British inventor, Andrew Ritchie, created prototypes of Brompton bikes from his bedroom in South Kensington, London. The company remains in private hands and is now led by Will Butler-Adams OBE, though Andrew Ritchie continues to act as Technical Director. Today, Brompton bikes are sold in 44 export markets. Brompton bikes are most often seen flying around the cities, but have proven to be great steeds in the game of bicycle polo in recent years. Their speed off the mark and technical build ensure a thrilling game of bicycle polo from the first chukka to the last! Bicycle polo was invented in County Wicklow, Ireland, in 1891 by retired cyclist, Richard J. Mecredy. Two centuries on, bicycle polo is being played in over 17 countries worldwide and was officially recognised by the International Cycle Union (UCI) in 2001.

The Oxford University Polo Club was founded in 1874 by undergraduates from Christ Church and Brasenose Colleges, three years after the introduction of polo to Britain. Led by Mr. Walter Long (later Viscount Long of Wraxall and First Lord of the Admiralty), the first match was held on the 1st of July 1877, and was contested by its two founding colleges amid considerable pomp and ceremony. The great success of that day encouraged the players to establish a Varsity match with the Cambridge University Polo Club. This Varsity match is the oldest polo fixture in the western world and was first played at the Bullingdon Cricket Ground in Oxford on the 27th of November 1878. It is also the oldest continuing polo fixture in the western world. During the late sixties and early seventies, polo at Oxford enjoyed a purple patch, winning the annual match eight times in a row. British Polo Day Dubai 2015 see’s rivals Oxford and Cambridge unite to take the newly established Gulf Polo Team.

The Gulf team brings together two of the top Gulf patrons: Her Highness Sheikha Maitha bint Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum of Dubai and Amr Zedan of Saudi Arabia. They will be joined by Rodolfo Ducos and Lucas Monteverde. Her Highness is playing for the second year at British Polo Day Dubai and is usually patron of the UAE team. The British Exiles Polo Team draws on the best players from the various British institutions that are represented at British Polo Day. For five years, The British Army has played against the Habtoor Polo Team, but for the second year running, the British Exiles will be taking on this impressive UAE formation instead. The British Exiles Team is comprised of some of Britain’s top young players and a wide range of other polo enthusiasts, who play predominantly outside Britain at British Polo Days around the world – hence the “Exiles”. Wilf Laugher who last played for the British Exiles in 2013 will be ably supported by two stalwarts of the game Rick Paton-Philip and Jamie Morrison (who is also one of Britain’s best arena polo players). 6-goaler George Meyrick, last season’s Hackett BPD Player of the year and one of Britain’s brightest rising talents, completes this formidable team.

The Habtoor family are one of the Middle East’s great polo patrons. The Al Habtoor brothers have played around the world as well as sponsored the Al Habtoor Royal Windsor Cup. They also participated at numerous exhibition charity matches and played in Spain & St Tropez as well as snow polo. In 2010, under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Mohammed Al Habtoor launched the Dubai Polo Gold Cup which is one of the most important and prestigious polo tournaments in the region. In 2011, the Silver Cup was added to the Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series. In 2012, Mohammed Al Habtoor led the Habtoor Polo Team to victory winning the Dubai Polo Gold Cup in a thrilling final and the event is going from strength to strength.

George has played regularly in Argentina, and since 2006 he has had his own string of horses and a small breeding programme there. In addition, he has played in South Africa, Sotogrande, St. Tropez, Chile, Amsterdam, Dubai, Florida and India, as well as Sierra Nevada for snow polo.
Former star of BAFTA award winning Made in Chelsea and I’m A Celebirty Get Me Out of Here, Hugo Taylor has now transitioned into design and is one of the co-founders of international eyewear brand Taylor Morris.
George has represented England in two World Cup tournaments, both times winning the European Championship. This year he has played in two England test matches and captained young England on two occasions, including on International Day.

Named as one of The Independent’s “10 people who changed the world in 2011”, Hugo has a love for polo which has stretched back to childhood and proudly joins forces with British Polo Day as their official eyewear partner.
George was recently awarded The British Polo Day Hackett Player of the year for 2013 and is currently playing off a 6 goal handicap.

Tom Urquhart is a television and radio presenter who formerly worked for a daily broadsheet newspaper in London. He is on air three times a week as a presenter on Dubai Eye 103.8’s sport show, is a prominent part of the latest Emirates Airline campaign and is co-presenter of two Dubai One shows, Ask One and World of Sports.
Mohammed Al Habtoor is Vice Chairman and CEO of the Al Habtoor Group LLC.
Urquhart has worked extensively on the small screen in the last decade. He was chosen as host for City 7s Good Morning Dubai show, the first live English language breakfast show in the UAE. He has also appeared in a Discovery Channel feature on ‘Dubai, A Place in the Sun’ from the UK, and ‘Lonely Planet does Dubai’. Most recently, he garnered plaudits for his role as presenter on The Entrepreneur, a reality show based in Dubai.
