WELCOME NOTE Dear Guests, Welcome to this incredible club, a wonderful outpost of polo heritage. The modern game as we know it was reborn by British officers in the 19th Century who spread the game globally. British Polo Days celebrate the history and traditions of the sport. Last year’s British Polo Day commemorated the founding of the club 125 years ago in 1886 when the officers of the 1st Battalion, King’s Own Regiment first played in Singapore. It was therefore fitting that the match featured the British Army Polo Team who ended up victorious. We are delighted once again to have the Chairman of the Army Polo Association, Col Simon Ledger, commentating on the matches which this year features Eton and Oxbridge as the touring teams. This second British Polo Day Singapore celebrates an equally auspicious occasion – Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee, and follows hot on the heels of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s recent visit commemorating the same. In a year where the London Olympics has showcased the Best of Britain, and the Paralympics has demonstrated Superhuman feats, we are pleased to be continuing a proud sporting tradition and our charity auction this year is supporting WheelPower and Singapore Riding For The Disabled with fantastic holidays generously donated by The Safari Collection, The Hideaways Club, Indigo Pearl and Alila Hotels and Resorts. Sponsored by prestigious British companies Savills, Pelham Bell Pottinger, Land Rover, Hackett and Ettinger, we are pleased to bring you a quintessentially British day of polo, glamour and entertainment. We are also extremely grateful to our Official Hotel Partner, the W Singapore – Sentosa Cove, our Champagne Partner Taittinger, Asia Prospects and Baha Mar for making this cultural bridge possible. It is an honour to be here again and we thank the Club President Mr. Iqbal Jumabhoy and the Committee for this privilege.

The Menu The British Polo Day lunch menu has been specially created for the event by the Marmalade Pantry Group Executive Chef First Course Green Mango and Papaya Salad with, avocado, citrus cured salmon, lemongrass and coriander dressing Second Course Smoked Corn chowder with spiced tortilla Third Course Basque Chicken with roasted peppers, olives basamati pilaf Fourth Course Chocolate Ganache Tart with red wine poached pear and salted caramel
Our Wine Selection Domaine du Grand Cros Côtes de Provence Rosé: Quintessential Provence grenache-dominant fragrance, with its perfume of raspberries and wild strawberries amongst summer fields – like walking through Provence bushland on a hot day with the air redolent in straw, dried herbs with a distinct smell of sage and lavender. A lively, crisp-crunchy palate entry, immediately tangy intense sour raspberries, pomegranate and redcurrant accelerating with mouth-watering freshness with squeezed lemon-juice and grapefruit-like acidity and pickled ginger spiciness. There is more evident succulence and sweetness of fruit on the midpalate with plenty of sweet strawberry, juicy peach and nectarine flavours yet turning savoury with wild thyme and sage seasoning and a pleasant bitternut twist towards a tantalizing dry farewell, echoing sweetsour raspberries and strawberries amongst exhilarating lemony acidity - a wonderfully vibrant, refreshing and complex wine redolent of summer, and dangerously drinkable! No Regrets Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon 2011: This classic Margaret River blend is loaded with ripe Asian pear, sweet pink grapefruit and pineapple aromas laced with delicately confected, powdery nose. Very fruit forward on the entry, the palate is fleshy and gives ripe green apple and crisp, focused gooseberry flavours. With a honey textured weight on the palate the finish is very long and satisfyingly fresh. No Regrets Cabernet/Merlot 2007: Rich, soft aromas of red plums, violets, red apple peel and aniseed open up on this medium bodied Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot blend showing a slightly cool climate character. The palate is bright with distinct strawberry and cherry flavours and spicy hints of rhubarb. Fine-grained, dusty tannins carry through to a very lengthy, amicable finish. No Regrets, indeed.

RULES OF POLO 1
The yellow player has the line, and at fair speed the white player would be crossing the line without sufficient safety margin, resulting in a penalty against white.
3
When travelling in the same direction the white player may draw level with yellow and then force him across the line and take possession of the ball without committing a dangerous foul.
5
Two players riding for a ball from opposite directions in the open must both give way to the left and take the ball on their right or offside.
2
Even at a far lesser angle the white player would still be crossing the line if he continues in that direction, and committing a dangerous foul.
4
The white player may move in parallel with the line and play a shot providing he can do so without interfering with the yellow’s mount or causing him to check back. If white would cross the line to the dotted position it would be a foul.
6
When two players are approaching a ball in the open from different directions, the player (white), with the line of the ball on his offside, right hand side, has right of way.

THE SINGAPORE POLO CLUB Founded in 1886, during Singapore’s colonial past, the Club has a long and fascinating history. Set in acres of lush, tropical grounds, the Singapore Polo Club is a world apart from Singapore’s bustling pace yet located just minutes from the heart of the city’s hectic business and commercial centre. The old world, rustic charm of the clubhouse with its open veranda and views of tropical greenery and open spaces provides a relaxing and understated, natural ambience. The main focus of the Club is of course polo and more generally, equestrian sports, but other sports activities and facilities are also well represented. Members can either keep their own polo ponies at the club stables, or alternatively lease ponies from the Club’s own string. Beginners, or those wishing to hone their skills may sign up for polo lessons with the Club’s resident pros. For those interested primarily in horse riding, you can participate in any of the Club’s varied Riding Section programmes and activities including basic riding, competitive dressage as well as show jumping at various levels, either in one to one or group lessons with our qualified riding instructors. You may also choose to enjoy the pleasure of simply hacking along a wide selection of jungle trails that are accessible from the Club.

British Polo Day India 2011
Although the ancient sport of polo began in Persia and China many centuries ago, the British reinvented the modern game in the nineteenth century. Sir Winston Churchill, one of the greatest proponents of the game, once famously said “a polo handicap is a passport to the world and polo is still thriving everywhere it is played, from Argentina to New Zealand. British Polo Day carries on the tradition of the British playing polo against friends in a host of different countries around the world.

THE
ETON TEAM Old Etonians have played polo all around the world for over a century. Eton has produced some fine polo players over the years, typified by Luke Tomlinson, an 8 goal professional and captain of the England team. However, the best known Old Etonian players are probably Princes William and Harry, the latter having played against Prince Rashid of Jordan at the British Polo Day Charity Cup. The Eton team playing today has two locally based Singapore players, Alex De Lisle and Harry Townshend. Harry Townshend

HISTORY OF THE GAME Polo is perhaps the oldest game in the world – having been played over 2500 years ago - and is truly international. The name polo is said to have been derived from the Tibetan word “pulu”, meaning ball.
ANCIENT POLO In 600 BC the first recorded game of polo took place between the Turkomans and Persians. The Turkomans won. Polo began as a training game for cavalry units, usually the king’s guard or other elite troops. To the warlike tribesmen, who played it with as many as 100 to a side, it was a miniature battle. Persian literature and art give us the richest accounts of polo in antiquity. Ferdowsi, the famed poet-historian, gives a number of accounts of royal polo tournaments in his 9th century epic, Shahnameh (the Epic of Kings). In the earliest account, Ferdowsi romanticizes an international match between Turanian force and the followers of Siyâvash, a legendary prince from the earliest centuries of the Empire. The game spread into North India. In fact Sultan Qutb-ud-din Aibak, the first Muslim Emperor of North India, actually died
accidentally in 1210 playing polo. From Persia, in medieval times polo spread to the Byzantines (who called it tzykanion), and after the Muslim conquests to the Ayyubid and Mameluke dynasties of Egypt and the Levant, whose elites favored it above all other sports. Notable sultans such as Saladin and Baybars were known to play it and encourage it in their court. Polo sticks were features on the Mameluke precursor to modern day playing cards. Polo was passed from Persia to other parts of Asia including the Indian subcontinent and China, where it was very popular during the Tang Dynasty and frequently depicted in paintings and statues. The Moguls were largely responsible for taking the game from Persia to the east and by the 16th century the Emperor Babur had established it in India. Polo was revived in Japan by the 8th Shogun, Tokugawa Yoshimune (1684-1751) and was played until early 20th century. It was the favourite sport of the last Shogun who surrendered power to the Emperor in 1868.

MODERN POLO The modern game of polo, though formalized and popularized by the British, is derived from Manipur (now a state in India) when British tea planters discovered the game in Manipur (Munipoor) on the Burmese border with India and established the first polo club in the world at Silchar, west of Manipur in 1862 In 1869, Edward “Chicken” Hartopp, 10th Hussars, read an account of the game in The Field, while stationed at Aldershot, and, with brother officers, organised the first game known then as “hockey on horseback”- on a hastily-rolled Hounslow Heath against The 9th Lancers. The 1st Life Guards and the Royal Horse Guards were quick to follow suit on grounds at Hounslow and in Richmond Park; and then on a small ground near Earl’s Court known as Lillie Bridge. The first polo club in England was Monmouthshire, founded by Capt. Francis “Tip” Herbert, 7th Lancers, at his brother’s seat, Clytha Park,
near Abergavenny in 1872. In 1875, the first official match in Argentina took place on 3rd September, where the game had been taken by English and Irish engineers and ranchers.

BRITISH POLO DAY FUNDRAISING In countries all over the world, polo has a long history of raising significant funding for worthy causes. Wherever possible, British Polo Day is entirely committed to bringing to bear the full weight of our Partners, network and creative talent to this end. In partnership with the host Club in each case, British Polo Day divides the fundraising proceeds from every international leg equally between local & British Charities. In so doing, the polo ties between two nations are reinforced further through shared philanthropic ambitions. In recognition of the recent Paralympic endeavours at London 2012, The British Polo Day Singapore Committee & Singapore Polo Club have chosen The Riding for the Disabled Association (Singapore) & WheelPower as the joint beneficiaries of British Polo Day Singapore in 2012.

WHEELPOWER TRANSFORMING LIVES THROUGH SPORT
WheelPower is the national organisation and registered charity for Wheelchair Sport. “The London 2012 Paralympics were a spectacular success, with an unprecedented number of viewers watching the rolling coverage and most venues sold out. For WheelPower, achieving a lasting legacy rests on our ability to raise money for the disabled, the newly disabled and the disabled children to allow them the opportunity to follow the example of the Paralympians that have recently gathered from across the globe to compete on British soil. Success is measured not just in Rio in four years time but in our ability to encourage & enable the transformational impact of playing sport at any level. Polo has been, and continues to be, an all encompassing passion in my life. It therefore means an immense amount that WheelPower has been chosen as the joint-recipiant for funds raised at British Polo Day Singapore in 2012.”
The Hon MW Vestey, President of WheelPower & Chairman of the Hurlingham Polo Association from 1995 - 2000 Six time winner of The Queen’s Cup at Guards Polo Club & four times winner of The British Open Gold Cup at Cowdray Park Polo Club.

THE RIDING FOR THE DISABLED ASSOCIATION RDA (SINGAPORE) PROVIDES FREE, THERAPEUTIC HORSE RIDING LESSONS TO CHILDREN AND ADULTS WITH DISABILITIES FROM ALL OVER SINGAPORE. The Charity was founded in 1982, with just 5 riders. Since then more than a thousand children and adults with disabilities have been given the opportunity to ride, and the opening of our new centre in 1997 has meant that we can cater to over 100 riders per week. With the addition in 2001 of a roof over the DBS Riding Arena our goal is to increase that number significantly. To see a young disabled person “light up as they get onto a horse is a heart felt experience sadly few of us have the opportunity to feel. I am very fortunate! You know that you are making a difference to a persons life, a life that is full of many more challenges, than the ones we all face as abled bodied persons everyday. My connection to these young people, fortuitously, comes through my love of horses, my passion for riding, and my love for playing Polo. It is that magnificent, sensitive, intelligent and caring animal, the horse, that in the end provides the conduit through which we can expand the life experience of disabled and abled bodied persons alike. It is through Polo and the Singapore Polo Club that I am very fortunate to be able to share this experience and opportunity with you all. Bid strongly and with your hearts..
