Dear Guests, Welcome to the British Polo Day Mexico, presented by Land Rover. British Polo Day is now well established in Great Britain, the Middle East, China, India, Russia, Singapore, Mexico, Thailand, Germany and France. A special niche has been forged that is far more than just a polo day, it is a cultural bridge built on the universal language of the horse. These shared values create a platform for understanding, dialogue and the development of relationships. Until the inaugural leg in the USA early next year, the 2nd British Polo Day Mexico remains the only event in the Americas. This is in large part due to the drive and vision of our friends and hosts the de Alba family, as well as the full backing of the formidable British Embassy in Mexico and the new British Ambassador His Excellency Duncan Taylor. With guests from the GREAT Campaign, UKTI and other governmental & diplomatic figures of notes attending alongside many of their Mexican counterparts, British Polo Day Mexico remains one of the most exciting and dynamic gatherings in a global platform that now spans the globe. We are delighted to partner with some of the best companies and brands, including Jaguar Land Rover, InterContinental Park Lane, Cumpanio, Don Julio, C&H, Hackett, Charles Russell, Matilda Hotel, The Grosvenor Stationary Company, Cordillera, Abercrombie & Kent, Ettinger, 3RD Home, Justerini & Brooks, Quintessentially Mexico, Billionaire and Taittinger. It is fitting that rekindling the past and establishing new ties should take place in QuerĂŠtaro. As the place where Mexicans first declared their independence, this state now boasts a thriving economy. As we continue to build on the diplomatic, cultural, philanthropic and political links that have enjoyed the full support of The British Embassy in Mexico City as well as The Mexican Embassy in London, we wish you an enjoyable day in this vibrant location.

Dear Friends, It is a great pleasure to welcome the British Polo Day to Mexico for the second year. Using the international language of the horse, this event allows two great nations to come together and celebrate their shared values and many respective strengths. This is also a glorious opportunity for us all to enjoy the dramatic spectacle of seeing the fast pasted and exciting sport that is Polo, which has a long tradition across the world, including in Mexico. In advance of the Olympics and in recognition of the Diamond Jubilee of HM Queen Elizabeth II, my government introduced the ‘GREAT Britain’ Campaign to showcase what makes Britain proud. This highlighted Britain's continuing cultural heritage, its tradition of quality and leadership in technology and innovation. The business ties between the UK and Mexico are flourishing. We are seeing increasing British sales in Mexico, particularly in the luxury goods sector, where British brands benefit from their heritage appeal and overall design and quality. We are optimistic that British Polo Day will give a strong push to the knowledge and interest in British goods and the opportunities for both countries. I would like to thank all of our Mexican and British friends who have made this event possible. I hope that each of you will make new contacts, strengthen existing bonds and refresh relations to take forward an even closer relationship between us in the future. Following last year’s success, I am very excited to welcome the British Polo Day back to Mexico. With best wishes,

Duncan Taylor British Ambassador

Balvanera Polo & Country Club For a second year running, Mexico is the sole British Polo Day event in The Americas. This is a testament to the strength of our shared vision as well as the growing economic confidence and cultural opportunities within the country. The best ladies team of all time will be playing at BPD Mexico 2013, along with Russia's top player Misha Rodzianko. This means that our well established cultural bridge between Britain and Mexico has now expanded to engage with an increasingly interconnected group of countries. This international exposure for The State of QuerĂŠtaro and Balvanera Polo & Country Club is immensely positive and, on behalf of the whole family, I welcome all of our guests to the 2nd British Polo Day Mexico. Alberto Laposse, an architect from Mexico City and baker trained in Paris, opened his first boutique hotel, Dos Casas in 2004 and Casa de los Olivos in 2008 in San Miguel de Allende followed by restaurant and bakery Cumpanio in 2010. In 1900 Alberto´s Italian grandfather, Giovanni Laposse, worked and then bought the prestigious bakery El Globo founded in 1884. Therefore Cumpanio carries on the family tradition for excellence in baking. An avid traveler, Laposse’s hotels and restaurants reflect his unique sense of design and lifestyle based on the four pillars of his brands; good taste, good living, good service and good food. “Cumpanio” is derived from Latin words “cum” and “panio” which in turn gave birth to the French word compagnon that means who you share the bread with. The restaurant was awarded in 2012 at Expo Habitat as the top three interior designed restaurants in Mexico. The roots of the restaurant are old-world European baking combined with the unique style of Mexico´s fresh products... mussels, catch of the day fish, lamb, olive bread, brioche, baguettes, chocolate croissants and of course garibaldis originally created by Giovanni Laposse in 1945 . “The menu features international cuisine, an artful blend of Italian and French enriching the traditional Mexican dishes. Their chefs are recognized specialists in the field, giving each dish a distinguished touch within a friendly and elegant atmosphere in the heart of San Miguel de Allende.” -- Living and Travel “The art and the aroma of bread fresh from the oven is one of the most important characteristics of Cumpanio. When you see Cumpanio from the street, you’re invited in for a good coffee or artisanal tea with a pastry.” - Estilo Mexico Watch for the newest Cumpanio bakery coming to Queretaro in 2014.

Rules of Polo 1

The light green player has the line, and at fair speed the dark green player would be crossing the line without sufficient safety margin, resulting in a penalty against dark green.

3

When travelling in the same direction the dark green player may draw level with green and then force him across the line and take possession of the ball without committing a dangerous foul.

5

Two players riding for a ball from opposite directions in the open must both give way to the left and take the ball on their right or offside.

2

Even at a far lesser angle the dark green player would still be crossing the line if he continues in that direction, and committing a dangerous foul.

4

The dark green player may move in parallel with the line and play a shot providing he can do so without interfering with the green’s mount or causing him to check back. If dark green would cross the line to the dotted position it would be a foul.

6

When two players are approaching a ball in the open from different directions, the player (dark green), with the line of the ball on his offside, right hand side, has right of way.

The British Exiles

The British Exiles Team is comprised of some of Britain’s top young players and a wide range of other polo enthusiasts, who play predominantly outside Britain at British Polo Days around the world – hence the “Exiles”. Max Charlton and George Meyrick are two players at the forefront of a new “golden age” of young British talent on the rise. They will be joined by leading Army player Jack Mann, now at the helm of a London based Private Security firm, and the team is completed by the up and coming Patrick Ephson.

Mexico

The two most significant polo areas in Mexico are Distrito Federal (based around Tecamac Polo Club just outside Mexico City) and QuerÊtaro (shared between the two polo Clubs Balvanera and El Marques). There is no Pony Club system in Mexico, so these three Clubs produce the majority of players that go on to represent the national team. After a lull in recent years, Mexican polo is once again growing strongly as a result of a new crop emerging from long established polo families. The next generation of players are exposed to an increasingly competitive domestic circuit as well as developing their skills in England, the U.S. and Argentina. This year’s Mexico team combines the best of the established guard with the fresh talent in the ascendancy.

Although the ancient sport of polo began in Persia and China many centuries ago, the British reinvented the modern game in the Nineteenth Century. Sir Winston Churchill, one of the greatest proponents of the game, once famously said “a polo handicap is a passport to the world and polo is still thriving everywhere it is played, from Argentina to New Zealand. British Polo Day carries on the tradition of the British playing polo against friends in a host of different countries around the world.

The British Ladies Polo is rare in that men & women compete off their given handicap on what is effectively an even footing. British Ladies are world leaders in an area of the sport that continues to flourish as a stand-alone offering. Ladies polo in Britain combines the best traditions of amateur competition with a core group of professional players that hone their skills at the highest levels of the domestic game. The staggering “grass roots operation that is Pony Club Polo, the willingness of horse loving families to encourage both sons & daughters to pick up a stick and an increasing focus on development from The Hurlingham Polo Association (the governing body for polo in The UK) represent the triple lock that has enabled British Ladies to succeed in all areas of the game. BPD Mexico 2013 sees the best female polo player in the world, captaining the reunion tour of the most successful ladies team in the history of the game. 1. Lucy Taylor

BALVANERA POLO CLUB

Since Chepo de Alba – owner of Balvanera Polo & Country Club and host of BPD Mexico – discovered his lifelong love of horses and the game itself, Balvanera has attracted the most talented polo players from the region. The most iconic names from the sport – the Gracida brothers, Antonio Herrera, Ernesto Trotz and Gonzalo Pieres Sr. among others – have all spent time with the family as players and friends. Its renown within the global polo community and great infrastructure has led to the development of what is now the most important equestrian center in the country. For the past 20 years Balvanera has hosted the principle show jumping events in Mexico. The combination of both polo and show jumping has given Balvanera a special position within Mexico’s equine community.

History of the Game Polo is perhaps the oldest game in the world – having been played over 2500 years ago - and is truly international. The name polo is said to have been derived from the Tibetan word “pulu”, meaning ball.

Ancient Polo

I

n 600 BC the first recorded game of polo took place between the Turkomans and Persians. The Turkomans won. Polo began as a training game for cavalry units, usually the king’s guard or other elite troops. To the warlike tribesmen, who played it with as many as 100 to a side, it was a miniature battle. Persian literature and art give us the richest accounts of polo in antiquity. Ferdowsi, the famed poet-historian, gives a number of accounts of royal polo tournaments in his 9th century epic, Shahnameh (the Epic of Kings). In the earliest account, Ferdowsi romanticizes an international match between Turanian force and the followers of Siyâvash, a legendary prince from the earliest centuries of the Empire. The game spread into North India. In fact Sultan Qutb-ud-din Aibak, the first Muslim Emperor of North India, actually died accidentally in 1210 playing polo. From Persia, in medieval times polo spread to the Byzantines (who called it tzykanion), and

after the Muslim conquests to the Ayyubid and Mameluke dynasties of Egypt and the Levant, whose elites favored it above all other sports. Notable sultans such as Saladin and Baybars were known to play it and encourage it in their court. Polo sticks were features on the Mameluke precursor to modern day playing cards. Polo was passed from Persia to other parts of Asia including the Indian subcontinent and China, where it was very popular during the Tang Dynasty and frequently depicted in paintings and statues. The Moguls were largely responsible for taking the game from Persia to the east and by the 16th century the Emperor Babur had established it in India. Polo was revived in Japan by the 8th Shogun, Tokugawa Yoshimune (1684-1751) and was played until early 20th century. It was the favourite sport of the last Shogun who surrendered power to the Emperor in 1868.

Modern Polo

T

he modern game of polo, though formalized and popularized by the British, is derived from Manipur (now a state in India) when British tea planters discovered the game in Manipur (Munipoor) on the Burmese border with India and eåstablished the first polo club in the world at Silchar, west of Manipur in 1862. In 1869, Edward “Chicken” Hartopp, 10th Hussars, read an account of the game in The Field, while stationed at Aldershot, and, with brother officers, organised the first game known then as “hockey on horseback”- on a hastily-rolled Hounslow Heath against The 9th Lancers. The 1st Life Guards and the Royal Horse Guards were quick to follow suit on grounds at Hounslow and in Richmond Park; and then on a small ground near Earl’s Court known as Lillie Bridge. The first polo club in England was Monmouthshire, founded by Capt. Francis “Tip” Herbert, 7th Lancers, at his brother’s seat, Clytha Park, near Abergavenny in 1872.

In 1875, the first official match in Argentina took place on 3rd September, where the game had been taken by English and Irish engineers and ranchers.

On behalf of the ‘Face Value’ charity appeal for the children at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, England, I wanted to thank all of you attending today’s British Polo Day event in Mexico City, and for allowing our Face Value Campaign to be part of this fantastic day. Our Face Value campaign for Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) was started a few years ago after my first child, Oscar, was born with a rare syndrome called Crouzon Syndrome, a rare genetic condition that causes the craniofacial bones to fuse prematurely. Oscar is cheeky, bright and brimming with personality. Everyone who knows him is delighted he’s doing so well because he hasn’t had an easy start in life. Oscar has already had numerous operations to relieve the pressure on his brain and eyes to improve his breathing. When Oscar is older he’ll need another major operation at Great Ormond Street Hospital to help expand and reshape his skull so that his brain can keep growing. Children with craniofacial conditions have to face many challenges - not only functional, but also the psychological pressure of looking ‘different’. With your help, the craniofacial surgery team at GOSH could develop life-changing new technologies to help children like Oscar. The craniofacial team at Great Ormond Street Hospital are committed to giving each patient the best possible chance in life. But further leaps forward are only possible with investment and research and development. Top craniofacial surgeons, Owase Jeelani and David Dunaway aim to undertake an ambitious fiveyear programme to revolutionise surgery for children with craniosynostosis. They aim to develop pioneering new, and less cumbersome, devices to surgically move the skull and face, whilst improving the understanding of the anatomical problems of children with craniosynostosis. We’re committed to help raise £1million as soon as possible so that the team can start taking strides forward. We have already made good progress raising 50% of our target. Thank you very much for supporting today’s auction and with any donations you might care to make. It will be hugely appreciated by a large number of children who will benefit from your generosity. Thank you all very much and I hope you enjoy today’s British Polo Event.
