Dear friends, On behalf of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center, we are thrilled you have joined us for another edition of Broadway Backwards. In today’s strained political and social climate, it often feels as though we are moving backward. Many people who once found pride expressing their sexuality, identity and orientation are now rightly fearful of oppression and marginalization. Basic rights and support the LGBT community fought so hard for - from marriage equality to HIV/AIDS funding - are at risk. So, how do we move forward? By continuing to show solidarity, resisting tyrannical forces and taking a stand. And that’s exactly what we’re doing here tonight. Every year, Broadway Backwards provides a safe space for artistic expression and empowerment for our community and our allies. The best of Broadway embrace the unique opportunity to perform the great songs of musical theatre while freeing themselves from the bounds of gender norms. It’s a show where gender doesn’t matter, but love does. Broadway Backwards brings together our two organizations to make a difference for our friends and neighbors across the street here in New York City and across the country. Whether through services for people living with HIV/AIDS or providing resources and a community for LGBT youth and those recovering from addiction, Broadway Cares and The Center ensure that essential, life-affirming and lifesaving services are available for hundreds of thousands of LGBT individuals and their families year-round. Building and empowering a strong community while advocating for justice and opportunity has been at the core of The Center’s work for more than 30 years. Whether it be through our first-of-its-kind youth substance use treatment program, our 275-mile Cycle for the Cause bike ride to raise funds for our HIV and AIDS programs or our career services tailored to fit the needs of women, immigrants and transgender community members, The Center brings together the diverse LGBT population of New York City. At Broadway Cares, we awarded $12.6 million in grants last year, supporting health clinics, housing initiatives, emergency financial assistance programs and The Actors Fund. Already this year, we distributed a record-breaking $1.9 million to community food pantries, congregate meal and delivery programs across the country in our first round of annual grants. We are able to quickly and efficiently support vital neighborhood programs thanks to the dedication of the talented men and women onstage and working behind the scenes tonight, as well as the generosity of everyone in the audience this evening. Enjoy this magical evening as Broadway’s brightest stars share their hearts through sensational show tunes. We are thankful for your support, both as an audience member and as a member of our community. Sincerely,
Glennda Testone Tom Viola Executive Director Executive Director The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS Transgender Community Center

March 13, 2017 Dear friends, What a year it has been. And we’re only two-and-a-half months in! Our country is more polarized and divisive than I can remember. The most vulnerable among us are scared and alienated. However, tonight we’re going to figuratively lock the door, closing out all that noise. We will take a collective deep breath and, as Elsa will sing eight times a week next season, “let it go” for a couple of hours, resting our hearts and minds for the struggles and fights ahead. I challenge you to immerse yourself this evening in a world of Broadway musicals with our own special Backwards twist; a world where we can love openly without fear; a world where we can stand strong… and proudly sing show tunes! Long after the curtain has come down and the last musical strains have faded, you will have made a difference in the lives of tens of thousands of men, women and children needing a helping hand. Tonight is a tribute to the generosity of the Broadway community, our loyal and generous Broadway Backwards audience of supporters and two organizations I encourage you to support in any way you can – Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center. In solidarity and love,
Robert Bartley Director
