October 24, 2015 Dear Friends: Lillias White is one of Broadway’s Tony Award-winning powerhouse performers; a devilish delight with a megawatt smile, luminous eyes and rapturous voice. You may have heard her on Broadway cast recordings, or even seen her live in one of her Tony-nominated or Tony-winning roles. But there’s nothing like being in the room with Lillias as she interprets classic songs in a way that only she can. I know you’re going to have an incredible evening. The entire Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS team is thrilled to return once again to beautiful New Hope and the historic Bucks County Playhouse for our fourth edition of Bucks County Cabaret. You continue to graciously open your hearts to us and we are overjoyed to have such deep roots now in this generous community. We’ve discovered here in Bucks County an uncommon and authentic sense of caring and compassion, and a tremendous, deep commitment to supporting those affected by HIV/AIDS. The generosity of the Bucks County Cabaret committee and you here tonight will help many in Bucks County, across Pennsylvania and all around the country by providing lifesaving medication and health care, counseling, healthy meals, emergency financial assistance and much more. Like many of you, Lillias is a passionate supporter of Broadway Cares. Since the early 1990s, LIllias has worked with us many, many times on benefits, special concerts, fundraising appeals and more. Her generosity of spirit lifts us up and informs all that we do. It is our honor to share her extraordinary talent with you tonight in New Hope. We hope you have a spectacular time and enjoy this special evening with Lillias. We also hope you feel proud that – once again – the community of Bucks County has joined us in making a difference for those battling HIV/AIDS. Sincerely,
Tom Viola Executive Director

This evening, Lillias White will pull back the show curtain to tell humorous, poignant and inspiring stories from both her personal and show business lives that she has never shared before, onstage or off. Directed by Will Nunziata, White interweaves songs that are career milestones for her with songs from the soundtrack of her life. She’ll share the music of Frank Loesser, Stephen Sondheim, Jerry Herman, Cy Coleman and more. The Brooklyn native made her Broadway debut in Barnum in 1981. She played Effie in the 1987 revival of Dreamgirls, for which she won the Drama League Award for Best Actress in a Musical. White has also appeared on Broadway in C ats, Carrie, Once on This Island, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Chicago and Fela!, for which she received a Tony nomination. For her role as Sonja in Cy Coleman’s The Life, she won the Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards.
White’s concert performances include Funny Girl, Hair, Dreamgirls and South Pacific, which was broadcast by PBS Great Performances. She has appeared in concert at The Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Sydney Opera House, Lincoln Center and in all the corners of the country and world.

The Bucks County Playhouse began life in the late 1700s as a grist mill named Hope Mills. When the building caught fire in 1790, owner Benjamin Parry rebuilt the mills and renamed them the New Hope Mills and in one stroke assigned the mills and the town a new name. According to an article written by Don Walker and published in the New Hope Gazette in 1953, the mills were saved from demolition in the 1930s when the property was purchased by a group of friends, including producer St. John Terrell, playwright Kenyon Nicholson, actor Richard Bennett and Mr. Walker, who were interested in turning it into a “straw hat theater.” Hope Mill Partners was formed and the group began selling stock in the new enterprise in an effort to raise the $15,000 they thought they’d need to complete their dream theater. Playwright Moss Hart, among other Bucks County celebrities of the clay, became a stockholder (for $100) and was named to the board. Though he reportedly never attended a meeting, his name and fame are forever connected to the Bucks County Playhouse. Soon a new corporation was formed and the New Hope Theater was born. Through 1938 and into 1939 the corporation had to raise money, manage construction, placate state inspectors and contend with bad weather. Just days before the July 1, 1939, opening, there was no plumbing in the bathrooms, the grounds were unplanted, construction debris was everywhere and the roof of the theater caught fire. Even the theater seats did not arrive until the morning of the opening. Plus, there were all of the issues that come with producing a play. St. John Terrell, “Sinjin” to everyone who knew him, produced the Bucks County Playhouse’s first season. He opened with a hit, Springtime For Henry starring Edward Everett Horton, and the rest, as they say, is history. The reputation of the Bucks County Playhouse grew rapidly over the years and it was soon designated as the State Theater of Pennsylvania. Performers from stage, film and television came to New Hope to perform in well-known productions and to help premiere plays, many of which made their way to Broadway. Neil Simon’s Barefoot in the Park made its debut here in 1963 and is now one of the theater’s most beloved plays. The list of actors, actresses, producers and directors who have worked at Bucks County Playhouse is remarkable: Rob Reiner, Mike Nichols, Angela Lansbury, Grace Kelly, Liza Minnelli, William Shatner, Elizabeth Ashley, Robert Redford, Dick Van Dyke, Lillian Gish, June Lockhart, Jack Klugman, Roddy McDowall, Walter Matthau, Merv Griffin, Larry Hagman, Tyne Daly and Audra McDonald are among the many. In 2012, the Playhouse re-opened after a lavish renovation thanks to the efforts of the Bridge Street Foundation, the nonprofit family foundation of Kevin and Sherri Daugherty, and Broadway producer Jed Bernstein. Now under the direction of Tony Award-winning Producers Alexander Fraser and Robyn Goodman, its mission is to present first-class professional entertainment and regain the Playhouse’s historic place in the national theatrical landscape; and to stimulate, support, inspire and celebrate the performing arts via community programs, partnerships and arts education. Since its renovation, significant productions include Terrence McNally’s Mothers and Sons starring Tyne Daly, which moved to Broadway and was nominated for two Tony Awards; Misery by William Goldman, based on the Stephen King novel, which opens on Broadway this fall; Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, starring Marilu Henner and playwright Christopher Durang; and this summer’s hit production of Company starring Justin Guarini, which the Wall Street Journal claimed “borders on the miraculous. The Playhouse is surely headed back into the spotlight.”
