12 MONTHS OF THE PANDEMIC
MARCH 2020 - FEBRUARY 2021
Behind the Scenes
WHO’S WHO
FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dear Friends,
Behind the Scenes is published by Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS
To call the last 12 months “unprecedented” would be an understatement. A little more than a year ago, I never would have anticipated we’d face a industry-wide shutdown that would leave our friends and colleagues out of work for more than a year. We’ve also felt profound sadness as the pandemic’s cruel hand robbed us of brilliant artists, dear friends, family and colleagues.

And yet when theaters went dark, you became our light. In this special, pandemic-focused issue of Behind the Scenes you’ll read how theater makers have supported their friends and neighbors through Broadway Cares. Many of our annual tentpole events such as Broadway Bares and Fire Island Dance Festival pivoted to online presentations. We were also able to “open the vault” and revive beloved past events to enjoy once again. In addition, scores of theater artists created virtual streaming productions to raise support for Broadway Cares. That outpouring of creativity allowed us to extend a lifeline to thousands in our industry who are still struggling. In this edition, you can read about how those funds have supported emergency grants for pandemic relief and social justice initiatives. Your support also allowed us to continue our vital National Grants Program, which provides food insecurity relief to organizations nationwide. We’re also extremely grateful to have sent more than $11 million to The Actors Fund in 2020, including $6.5 million from our COVID-19 Emergency Assistance Fund for those in our industry who never expected to need a helping hand. While we never expected the devastation of the past year, the kindness and compassion you’ve shown is not surprising - it’s what you’ve been sharing with us for more than 30 years. Recently André De Shields shared some wisdom in a Zoom meet-and-greet with a donor. “Generosity and gratitude are the fuel of the universe,” he said. I could not agree more. Thank you for being our most precious fuel, indeed, our lifeblood, even when the world has turned upside down. I am forever grateful. Sincerely, Tom Viola Executive Director

Online Experiences Fill Void After Pandemic Pauses Live Events W
hen the pandemic closing notice went up on Broadway and in theaters across the country on March 12, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS was one week into its spring in-theater appeals and just four days away from presenting Broadway Backwards. Suddenly, the annual in-person fundraising efforts, which have always been the lifeblood of Broadway Cares’ efforts were in limbo. While initial indications were the shutdown would only be a matter of weeks, reality quickly made clear it would be much longer. As the nation grappled with illness, job loss and unprecedented changes to everyday life, the need for help - the exact kind of help the now-on-hold fundraising efforts would provide was critically dire.

“My dream was snatched away.” - NaTonia Monét
Helping Those Who Usually Step Up to Help Others N
aTonia Monét had just made her Broadway debut in Tina: The Tina Turner Musical, fulfilling a decade-long dream. Then, the pandemic hit. “My dream was snatched away,” Monét said. “And I was faced with the reality of my entire industry being shut down. No work for weeks, then months - now it’s anybody’s guess when we can work again.” Broadway alone supports more than 96,000 jobs in New York City, according to The Broadway League. Multiply that by theaters and arts communities across the country and there are hundreds of thousands facing the same dark days as Monét, not knowing if they can pay next month’s rent or even put food on the table next week. Just days after the Broadway shut down, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS launched the COVID-19 Emergency Assistance Fund, created specifically to help all those onstage, backstage and behind the scenes find some solace of hope and help.

With the community in trouble, a pandemic wasn’t going to change that. “When crises hit, the extended Broadway community and the theater fans everywhere have always responded with generosity, compassion and action,” said Tom Viola, executive director of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. “Buoyed by and on behalf of those onstage, backstage and throughout the theaters of New York City and on the road, we proudly launched this emergency initiative to provide immediate, basic support for those facing uncertainty in this unsettling pandemic.” The launch of the Broadway Cares fund inspired more than 20 Broadway producers to pledge a $1 million challenge match, doubling the impact of every donation. Once that sum was raised, a second wave of philanthropic producers stepped up with another $1 million.
Broadway Cares’ COVID-19 Emergency Assistance Fund has helped The Actors Fund provide urgent support to more than 15,000 individuals. By the one-year anniversary of the shut down, Broadway Cares will have sent $9 million to The Actors Fund specifically to help everyone in entertainment and the performing arts during the pandemic - emergency support that will continue throughout the pandemic. In addition to the struggle to feed their families and pay their rent, entertainment professionals soon began facing the loss of health insurance. Many artists qualify for insurance eligibility through their respective unions based on the amount of weeks they work. And with no work in sight, keeping their health insurance became perilous. Thanks to a lead contribution of $1 million from Broadway Cares, The Actors Fund launched the Every Artist Insured initiative, expanding on its existing health insurance counseling and enrollment support services. The new initiative provides additional education and help in choosing and attaining affordable health insurance plans through state insurance exchanges.
While support for those impacted by the coronavirus pandemic captured most of the attention, The Actors Fund's ongoing safety net of programs continues helping everyone in entertainment and the performing arts. Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS remains the single largest financial supporter of those programs.
And the need continues. With Broadway not opening until summer or later, and theaters across the country on an uncertain timetable as well, tens of thousands of entertainment professionals remain in peril.
In addition to the $7.5 million shared with The Actors
“If you’ve been streaming Netflix or tuned into Hamilton on Disney+ or watching anything online during the pandemic, you know the importance of artists,” Monét said. “But we still have no paycheck right now. We’re just trying to figure out how we’re going to cover our bills and survive until theaters reopen. To those who’ve donated, thank you for your compassion. It’s something the world needs right now.”

Behind the Scenes
I
N THE FACE OF THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC,
Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS was forced to change fundraising and grant-making in 2020, both to adapt to a socially distant world and to support the growing number of people needing help. In March, when the pandemic forced the shutdown of Broadway and theaters across the country, Broadway Cares’ traditional in-theater spring appeals were cut short and thrown into jeopardy. The news hit as Broadway Cares was just one week into its efforts, typically one of the largest fundraising campaigns of the year. With those efforts halted, so was the year’s remaining grant-making for hundreds of organizations across the country. What initially was thought to be a short hiatus became, of course, months - and, now, more than a year- of disruption. The unexpected scenario prompted creative thinking to salvage what in 2019 had been nearly $3.5 million in grant-making. For the first time, Broadway Cares sought support from pharmaceutical leaders who regularly fund HIV/AIDS research and social service providers, but had not been approached previously by Broadway Cares. Gilead Sciences offered $1 million to help create Emergency Grants for Pandemic Relief, a stopgap measure to help provide some level of support for Broadway Cares’ National Grants Program.
Palmetto Community Care in Charleston, S.C., said in an email. “We are changing the way we work by delivering food, food gift cards, hygiene supplies and medications to clients directly. We are offering mental health support to combat the extreme anxiety and panic that many are feeling. We appreciate your generosity and your compassion.” “Times are hard for us, “ wrote Sara Brewer, executive director of Face to Face in Santa Rosa, CA. “Every dollar counts and this is going to go a long way to help our clients living with HIV stay engaged in care and safe during this crazy time.” Lanita Khalil, executive director of AIDS Alabama South in Mobile, was succinct: “I just cried! You are all angels! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!” By the end of Broadway Cares’ 2020 fiscal year in September, $6.4 million had been awarded to 491 organizations in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C., as part of the National Grants Program. “In March, thinking of any kind of grant-making seemed impossible,” Broadway Cares Executive Director Tom Viola said. “And while we understand that these grants cannot nearly make right all that has been lost, Broadway Cares can offer an often unexpected hand in hope and solidarity. This is proof that impossible is not in the vocabulary of our generous, resourceful and talented community. This is proof that what we do together makes a difference.”
“Few organizations have touched as many lives of people living with HIV/AIDS as Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS,” said Amy Flood, senior vice president at Gilead Sciences. “The COVID-19 pandemic is shuttering community organizations and pushing our health care system to its capacity. This means communities affected by HIV/AIDS face more obstacles than ever to access the health care services they need. We are proud to do our part, and humbled to stand alongside the talented artists who have been supporting the HIV community for years.” Gilead was quickly joined by M‧A‧C Viva Glam and ViiV Healthcare. These three giants were followed by the P. Austin Family Foundation to provide integral support for the emergency campaign. Through online donations in just two weeks, 459 other Broadway Cares donors added $536,610 to get to $2.1 million raised. In April, checks were sent to 319 grantees, surprising them with an unexpected grant equal to 60% - 75% of what they had received in 2019. As the checks landed on development desks across the country, the email response was a gracious mix of thank-yous and teary appreciation for the donors and supporters who made the grants possible. “Our clients are on the front lines and so many have lost their jobs and are wondering how they are going to pay for food and rent,” Bradley D. Childs, deputy executive director at

Record Support Helps Food Programs Address Increased Needs
O
ne of the ugly realities the coronavirus pandemic has brought to light - and exacerbated - is the depth of food insecurity across the country. And with increased isolation for so many, hunger lurks for an unprecedented number of our friends, neighbors and their families. The federal food stamps program saw a nearly 23 percent increase in need in 2020 over the previous year. One in four U.S. children experienced food insecurity last year. And 24 million Americans say they often or sometimes do not have enough to eat. In February, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS provided a record $2,452,500 to 131 food delivery and service organizations across the country. Despite the economic challenges of the pandemic, the grants were a $135,500 increase over the 2020 annual food grants, which were sent before the pandemic hit. Over the last five years, Broadway Cares’ support for meal delivery services, congregate meal programs and food banks increased 28%. It’s a remarkable feat at the most perilous of times.

“A decent meal can be the first line of defense, the road back to health and recovery,” Broadway Cares Executive Director Tom Viola said. “Access to that meal can be difficult in the best of circumstances. During a pandemic, when we’re told to not even think about venturing outside, access to the safety net of support hits the most vulnerable the hardest. These 2021 grants underscore our community’s commitment to shining a bright spotlight on those in need, even on our country’s darkest days.”
The record grant-making was fueled by a successful end-of-year fundraising campaign that included motivation from Craig Newmark Philanthropies, which matched the first $250,000 in donations dollar for dollar. In early 2020, prior to the pandemic, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS provided $2.3 million to food programs at 135 organizations. At the time, it was a record amount of grants, which became more important as the impact of the pandemic hit the safety net of social services nationwide. During the first six months of the pandemic, God’s Love We Deliver in New York City saw a 30% increase in new clients and the same increase in the number of meals prepared every day. Feeding Tampa Bay in Florida increased the number of mobile pantries from 40 per month to 150 per month. And the Food Bank of North Central Arkansas in Mountain Home reports that nearly one of every three children in the state are at risk of not knowing where their next meal will come from. “Since the start of the COVID-19 crisis in March 2020 we have experienced unprecedented levels of demand for our nutrition service as rates of food insecurity skyrocket,” noted David B. Waters, chief executive officer at Community Servings in Boston. “As a result of the economic impact of the COVID-19 crisis, more than one million residents are currently affected by food insecurity in our state, including one in five households with children.” Mary Arbuckle, executive director of Other Options in Oklahoma City, said: “As a result of COVID-19, Other Options is now the only food resource for people living with HIV/AIDS in Oklahoma. Since the beginning of the pandemic, we have maintained weekly pick up and homebound deliveries to 2,000 households. Other Options experienced a 20% increase in new referrals for individuals with HIV who had lost their jobs, their health insurance and are now experiencing food insecurities.” In New York City, the theater community rallied to physically give back to their home-away-from-home neighborhood. Actor Nikka Graff Lanzarone was among a group of performers who gathered in Times Square one November morning to deliver meals that were made possible, in part, by support from Broadway Cares' annual food grants. After making her socially distanced meal deliveries to homebound clients of God’s Love We Deliver, a longtime Broadway Cares grantee, Lanzarone felt a connectedness that she has rarely experienced through a year of COVID-19 restrictions. “It was a really wonderful experience to be able to deliver not just food, but to also be able to have a human connection,” she said. “It was such an all-around great feeling.” Among those Lanzarone and her delivery partner, fellow performer Julia Murney, visited was a former theatrical prop designer. “We struck up a conversation about the chandelier in his foyer, which he had salvaged from a theater production and rewired for his home years earlier,” Lanzarone said. “Everything we could see from the doorway was something he created. We ended the delivery by singing 'Broadway Baby' from Follies to him as we left. It was really wonderful.” Behind the Scenes

Emergency Outreach Grants Pandemic Support Reaches Small Businesses, Social Justice Initiatives
W
hen tragedy envelops a community - or a nation heroes emerge, sometimes from unexpected places. Throughout the coronavirus pandemic and last summer’s anti-racism awakening, grassroots initiatives emerged and established organizations stepped up to address new challenges integral to the lives of our extended community and Broadway Cares itself. From vital social justice causes to valiant efforts to support behind-the-scenes artisans who make theater magical, Broadway Cares has provided $1.3 million in support to 102 of these organizations since March 2020. The grants help form a safety net for many who may not be reached by Broadway Cares’ annual grantees or the services of The Actors Fund. Rooted deep in the history and identity of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS is a commitment to being a voice for those who’ve been silenced and marginalized. The street actions and protests last summer, ignited by the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and far too many others, prompted Broadway Cares to expand its support of organizations on the front lines of the social justice and anti-racism movement. On June 8, Broadway Cares awarded $125,000 to four organizations taking the lead: the Broadway Advocacy Coalition, which has been supported by Broadway Cares since it started in 2016; The Bail Project; Color of Change; and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. Since then, financial support also has been extended to the Black Theatre Coalition and Broadway for Racial Justice. “We need to hold ourselves accountable and do more to amplify and listen to BIPOC voices,” Tom Viola, executive director of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, said. “We urge others in our community to join us in supporting and engaging with the critical work of these organizations and others working to dismantle systemic racism.” Prior to the pandemic, Broadway Cares annually supported organizations that reached out to members of the performing arts community who might not qualify for assistance from The Actors Fund because of the irregularity of their employment or where they performed. COVID-19 only heightened those needs. So, throughout the past year, Broadway Cares has increased its support to organizations helping artists who might otherwise be overlooked by other programs. Three of those recipients are

The Indie Theatre Fund, the NYC Low Income Artists and Freelancers Relief Fund and the NYC Dancers Relief Fund. These three organizations have received $155,000 in support during the pandemic. When Broadway, television and film production shut down, more than 50 independent businesses and artisans who supply and care for costumes for the industry also went dark. The Costume Industry Coalition was created to help this unique ecosystem survive the shutdown by advocating for financial relief during the pandemic for the businesses and their employees, and assistance reopening when Broadway returns. Broadway Cares has provided $50,000 in support for these efforts so far. Backpacks for the Street, which has been a Broadway Cares grantee since its beginning in 2018, has provided more than 12,000 backpacks with COVID survival supplies to New York City’s homeless since the pandemic hit. Founded by Jeffrey Newman and his husband, Jayson Conner, the backpacks now include masks, gloves and hand sanitizer along with 40 or more other daily essentials like food, socks and T-shirts, toiletries and hygiene products. Often overlooked, even in the best of times, is the important role animals play in our physical and mental health. During a pandemic, that companionship and assistance can be lifesaving. In recognition of this, Broadway Cares continues to support organizations such as Berloni Theatrical Animals and PAWS NY, which helps vulnerable New Yorkers stay with their pets during this crisis and beyond. “Thanks to our donors and supporters, Broadway Cares has been able to offer a helping hand to many organizations and initiatives often overlooked and underserved, but integral to our communities,” Viola said. “Each one of these 102 grantees, in their own unique way, serves an integral role in our collective health and well-being.”

Fred Ebb Foundation
Lyricist’s Legacy Grows with Largest Single Financial Gift
T
he legacy of legendary lyricist Fred Ebb has reached past Broadway houses to homes and hearts around the world. Long after his passing in September 2004, Ebb continues to be an invaluable contributor to the Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS community.
“Your offer of increasing the Fred Ebb Foundation’s support this year from the $1 million informally pledged in the summer to this gift of $2.4 million is simply astounding,” Broadway Cares Executive Director Tom Viola told Bernard. “It’s a truly lifesaving gift. Thank you.”
In his will, Ebb, whose Tony Award-winning collaborations with John Kander created 14 musicals, declared that royalties earned on his beloved works would be distributed each year to Broadway Cares through the Fred Ebb Foundation. With an initial donation of $300,000 in 2005, his contributions have continued to grow exponentially, breaking Broadway Cares donation records along the way. The foundation’s annual gift consistently tops itself as the single largest donation in Broadway Cares history.
The generous contribution has been put to critical use. Broadway Cares made an immediate award of $500,000 to The Actors Fund to support its COVID-19 emergency assistance efforts, with an additional donation of $1.5 million sent to support the fund’s HIV/AIDS Initiative, the Friedman Health Center for the Performing Arts, the Artists Health Insurance Resource Center and its Every Artist Insured program, among others.
“The Ebb Foundation is a creation of my uncle Fred, who was creative in so many ways,” Mitchell S. Bernard, trustee of the foundation, said in December at the virtual Fred Ebb Awards. “The foundation he created is a living example of his generosity, a way of giving back to the community of people who create theater, the community that he loved and that sustained him.” Even during a global pandemic with theatrical stages temporarily dark, including Kander and Ebb’s long-running Broadway hit Chicago, the Fred Ebb Foundation continued to make history. “This year, the foundation’s revenue is down, but for the same reason, the need is up,” Bernard said. “People are out of work, without health insurance, some struggling with the virus. So we’ve decided to make our largest gift yet to Broadway Cares, which will be in the amount of $2.4 million.” The record donation, again the largest single donation in Broadway Cares history, far exceeds what the organization had anticipated in light of the theater industry’s shutdown.
Ebb, through his foundation, has now shared more than $22 million with Broadway Cares since the first gift in 2005. In addition, Ebb continues to help artists and musicians strive for greatness through the Fred Ebb Award, given annually to an aspiring songwriter or songwriting team that shows true excellence and potential. In 2020, two grants of $65,000 were awarded in a virtual ceremony to Michael R. Jackson and the team of Chirstopher Staskel and Ben Bonnema. Through the foundation, Ebb continues to support the theater community during one of its most challenging times, echoing the support he provided in his lifetime through his ingenious body of work and his stalwart support for Broadway Cares. Viola recalled Ebb’s fitting lyrics from The Rink during the virtual ceremony honoring the annual donation and the Fred Ebb Award winners: “Long as I know you’re trying. Long as I know you care. Long as we stick together. We’ll take on anything, anytime, anywhere.’”
