March 18, 2013 Dear Friends: On behalf of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center, welcome to the Palace Theatre and the eighth edition of Broadway Backwards. Few could argue that since we last gathered for this once-a-year event, we’ve experienced a historic shift in our country. We celebrated history-in-the-making, several times over, as voters in three states and our very own president endorsed and embraced marriage equality – and another state rejected an anti-marriage equality ballot initiative. And, in the coming weeks, the US Supreme Court will rule on the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act and California’s Proposition 8 ballot measure. There is a lot to celebrate this evening. But with each stride forward we must remember that there are still countless in our community who struggle every day. Both Broadway Cares and the Center vigorously address the challenges faced by so many living without the good fortune many of us here in the theatre tonight enjoy. Whether through services for people with HIV/AIDS or providing an outlet and community for vulnerable LGBT youth and those recovering from addiction, BC/EFA and the Center ensure that essential, life-affirming and life-saving services are available for hundreds of thousands LGBT individuals and their families throughout the year. Broadway Backwards brings together our two organizations, each with a unique and rich history serving the community, as an example of how – with a shared purpose – we can collaborate and accomplish great things. As the curtain rises this evening, you’ll witness our stories being told through some of the great songs of musical theatre. We hope that tonight shines a bright light for folks who, for too long, felt they had to live in the shadows. Thank you for joining us. Enjoy the show! Sincerely,

Dear friends, Welcome to the historic Palace Theatre. It was here, more than 60 years ago, that Judy Garland sat on the edge of this stage, smiling down and pouring her heart and soul into her songs. It was a comeback performance described as “one of the greatest personal triumphs in show business history.” Beyond the connection through her gay fans, Judy is also linked to the start of the modern-day LGBT movement. It was her death in 1969 that gays were mourning inside the Stonewall Inn when a police raid ultimately triggered the beginning of a revolution. Through arts and activism, we have grown together and grown strong. We have fought for and gained rights and visibility in an often less-than-accepting world. We’ve helped the tide of public opinion turn and hit a tipping point. For the first time, LGBT people can envision full, federal marriage equality being achieved within our lifetimes. But with all these new frontiers opening up to our community, we often find ourselves wondering where we go from here? With that in mind, as always with Broadway Backwards, we turn to the most powerful – and fabulous – songs of the Great White Way for answers ... and entertainment. Leading us on this musical journey tonight are Broadway’s best. While you take in the eighth edition of Broadway Backwards, keep in mind that, by joining us this evening, you are supporting two beloved and outstanding organizations. And you’re helping hundreds of thousands of people right here in New York City and around the country connect to vital, life-saving resources each and every day. Thanks to you and with the help of some of the most extraordinarily gifted and generous friends from the Broadway community onstage and off, we’ll raise a whole lot of money for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center. Because of your support, they can continue to fight forward and do their best to ensure that no one feels isolated, alone or without the help they desperately need. As we come together to support these two exceptional organizations and see our stories told through these magnificent musical theatre songs, one can’t help but feel that somewhere over the rainbow, tonight our Judy is here again, smiling down on us! With love and thanks, Robert Bartley Writer, Director & Choreographer
