March 9, 2015 Dear Friends: On behalf of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center, welcome to the Al Hirschfeld Theatre and the 10th anniversary edition of Broadway Backwards. With the return of some of the biggest show-stopping acts and many of the show’s most popular performers, tonight’s celebration offers us an opportunity to commemorate and share our unique sense of community. In the last 10 years, the dreams we have attained together are astounding, and yet we continue to fight because there is still so much more we can achieve. Both Broadway Cares and The Center work on a daily basis to ensure that those who face challenges are able to find a connection in times of struggle – a helping hand, a strong shoulder, a loud voice. Whether through services for people with HIV/AIDS or providing an outlet and community for vulnerable LGBT youth and those recovering from addiction, BC/EFA and The Center ensure that essential, life-affirming and lifesaving services are available for hundreds of thousands LGBT individuals and their families throughout the year. Broadway Backwards brings together our two organizations to collaborate and share resources to make a difference for our friends and neighbors right here in New York and so many more around the country. The value of this relationship is larger than just financial support, as our joint accomplishments inspire and support our community here in our neighborhood and across the nation. The Center recently completed a $9.2 million renovation of our main building, which included a $50,000 grant from Broadway Cares for the capital campaign. The renovation allows The Center to better serve the diverse LGBT population of New York City through health and wellness services, youth and family services, and arts and culture programming. The Center is now better equipped to offer the programming our community currently relies on and to meet the needs of generations to come. Here at home and across the country, Broadway Cares distributed a record-breaking $10.6 million in grants in 2014 to the Actors Fund and more than 450 AIDS and family service organization in all 50 states. This vital support of food delivery programs, health care, emergency financial support and more essential services would not be possible without the dedication of the talented men and women onstage and working behind the scenes tonight, as well as the generosity of you in our audience. This evening, sit back and enjoy some of the great songs of musical theatre as they come alive in new ways and take on new meaning. We hope you see yourself in some of these songs, perhaps a little differently than you have before. We also hope that the celebration we share tonight helps shine a brighter light for those who continue to live in the shadows. Thank you for joining us and for your generous support. Sincerely,
Glennda Testone Executive Director The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center

March 9, 2015 Dear friends, What a whirlwind this has been. Ten years ago, I imagined a very special evening of musical theatre songs that might uniquely celebrate our community. At the time, I didn’t expect it to be anything more than a one-night concert featuring a few of my pals from the Broadway community singing for an important cause. But when Cheyenne Jackson and Matt Cavenaugh walked out on our makeshift stage and so beautifully and intimately sang “We Kiss in a Shadow” from The King and I … and then kissed, instead of applause, there was a blissful silence. Everyone in that room felt that kiss. I realized at that moment our little event, then called Broadway Backwards: Songs of Survival and Love, could be something meaningful and, perhaps, even profound. Since then, our scrappy, little event has grown considerably, from Room 301 at the Center to the stage of the beautifully historic Al Hirschfeld Theatre. Along the way, hundreds of theatre artists and professionals have contributed time and their extraordinary talents to present Broadway Backwards each year and, most importantly, help raise money for two extraordinary organizations I’ve proudly been associated with for more than 20 years: Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center. I can’t think of any other industry in which so many continually give of themselves to make a difference for those around them. Frankly, the only thing that surpasses their talents and artistry is their generosity. It may sound like a cliché, but it truly takes a village to put together an event like this. I am continually grateful that I’ve had the privilege to work with such passionate and compassionate villagers. Thank you for being a part of that village by purchasing tickets for Broadway Backwards this evening and joining us in helping Broadway Cares and The Center make a difference in the lives of hundreds of thousands of people year in and year out. Sincerely,
Robert Bartley Writer, Director & Choreographer

This song is for everyone who remembers & honors those who came before us... Those we’ve lost to AIDS Those we’ve lost to military sacrifice, including our LGBT brothers & sisters Those we’ve lost to Life. “To Those Who Came Before Us” a song for choirs as well as soloists Now available as sheet music Also on iTunes/Amazon for download
Songwriters Mike Greenly and Jim Papoulis announce a new song – “To Those Who Came Before Us” -- which brings attention to a remarkable volunteer organization, The Independence Fund. The “Indy Fund” helps enable the complete physical and emotional healing of severely injured American Veterans. Its Board of Directors is comprised entirely of combat Veterans.
This valiant group of Indy Fund volunteers supports U.S. Veterans in many ways. These include supplying the disabled with all-terrain wheel chairs and other rehabilitation equipment so they can experience mobility again, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy for faster healing. The group also partners with the caregivers of our warriors, helping them with the challenges associated with the devastating injuries of war.
