Dear friends, On behalf of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center, we are thrilled you have joined us for another edition of Broadway Backwards. Outside of this theatre, we are inundated every day with vitriol targeting marginalized groups, including the LGBTQ community. Basic human rights for which our community fought so hard from marriage equality to HIV/AIDS funding - continue to be at risk. But as theatre people, we’ve always found solace and community in the arts. When the world is disheartening, the theatre is a space for people of all backgrounds and beliefs to belong and have a voice. And because of your support of Broadway Backwards, you’re making a real, tangible difference in the lives of the LGBTQ community and the most vulnerable among us. Broadway Backwards brings together our two organizations to create a safer, more inclusive and more dignified world. Whether through services for people living with HIV/AIDS or providing resources for LGBTQ youth and those recovering from addiction, Broadway Cares and The Center ensure that essential, life-affirming and lifesaving services are available for hundreds of thousands of LGBTQ individuals and their families year-round. Building and empowering a strong community while advocating for justice and opportunity has been at the core of The Center’s work for more than 30 years. Whether it be through our newly launched advocacy program, our first-of-its-kind youth substance use treatment program or our 275-mile Cycle for the Cause bike ride to raise funds for our HIV and AIDS services, The Center brings together the diverse LGBTQ population of New York City. At Broadway Cares, your support provided for $12.9 million in grants last year to health clinics, food service organizations, emergency financial assistance programs and housing initiatives in all 50 states, Washington, DC, and Puerto Rico. Because of your donations, Broadway Cares also is the single largest supporter of the vital social service programs of The Actors Fund, which provide the entire entertainment community with a safety net in times of need or crisis. Thank you for being a patron of the arts and for supporting the work of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center. And thank you for joining Broadway’s best in sharing your heart with those who need it most.

Sincerely,

Glennda Testone Tom Viola Executive Director Executive Director The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS Transgender Community Center

Dear friends, While rehearsing Broadway Backwards over the last few weeks and watching this wildly talented group collaborate together, a thought crossed my mind on several occasions. In this polarizing and frightening time in our history, I wish I could invite into the rehearsal room anyone who speaks out against our community. What they would see is a unique cross-section of artists and theatre professionals coming together to celebrate our diversity and humanity. They would observe selflessness and creativity. They would see kindness and compassion. They would find a studio of theatre professionals with one unique, shared purpose: to sing and dance our unique message of inclusion, joy and love in order to help others who are less fortunate or need a helping hand. I’m continually astounded by the generosity of the theatre community. They are the first to volunteer to help someone in crisis and raise money to assist those struggling for whatever reason. I believe there is just a little bit of Judy Garland in all of us, always ready to “put on a show” to benefit others. And I’m equally gobsmacked by the generosity of everyone sitting in a seat at the beautiful Al Hirschfeld Theatre tonight. You’re joining with us to raise money for two organizations I am deeply committed to and grateful for - Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center. Tonight, we will celebrate wonderful performers and performances, and an extraordinary amount of money raised. That money will provide so much for so many right here in New York and in the far corners of the country, in red states and blue ones alike. It seems to me that is what being an American is about. And that kind of compassion is what I have seen every day in the rehearsal room over the last few weeks. I am so appreciative and proud to share this with you tonight. With love and admiration,

Robert Bartley Director
