October 19, 2013 Dear Friends, We are thrilled to be back again at the Bucks County Playhouse in beautiful New Hope just in time to see the fall foliage change for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS’ second edition of the spectacular Bucks County Cabaret. You have graciously opened your hearts to us and we are overjoyed to have firmly planted roots in this generous community. While planning last year’s event, we discovered something very unique and special: an uncommon and authentic sense of caring and compassion in Bucks County and a tremendous, deep commitment to supporting HIV/AIDS causes. As you now know, Broadway Cares produces benefits of every variety, from big Broadway performances to intimate classical music concerts, dance festivals to a modern-day burlesque show. In this case, we came upon an event with a group of supporters and volunteers who are deeply passionate about our cause and eager to step forward to help. Without hesitation, the Bucks County Cabaret committee has again stepped up to do whatever needed to be done. What’s especially remarkable is that we continue to find that this generosity of spirit isn’t limited to the committee. It flows throughout the entire community. The money raised tonight will help so many right here in Bucks County, across Pennsylvania and all around the country with lifesaving medications and health care, counseling, nutritious meals, emergency financial assistance and so much more. We hope you have a sensational time this evening and enjoy the performance by BC/EFA’s very special friend Alan Cumming. Not only is he an extraordinary talent, but Alan has been a valued member of the BC/EFA Board of Trustees for nearly 15 years. We also hope you feel a sense of pride that – once again – the community of Bucks County has made a difference for those battling HIV/AIDS. At Broadway Cares, we have a phrase that is repeated quite often, which on evenings like tonight resonates very true for me: “What we do together makes a difference.” Indeed, it will. Sincerely,
Tom Viola Executive Director
Alan Cumming Alan Cumming made his professional acting debut as “Malcolm” in Michael Boyd’s 1985 production of Macbeth at the Tron Theatre in Glasgow. Twenty-eight years later he played nearly all the parts in the National Theatre of Scotland’s sensational re-imagining of the Scottish play on Broadway, earning him Broadway.com and BroadwayWorld.com Best Actor awards and a Drama League Distinguished Performance Award nomination. After working extensively in the Scottish theatre, Cumming made his West End debut in The Conquest of the South Pole, earning him his first Olivier Award nomination. In 1991, he won an Olivier for Accidental Death of an Anarchist at the Royal National Theatre. In 1998, Cumming made his sensational Broadway debut when Cabaret transferred from the West End, winning him the Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and a host of other awards. He’s also appeared on Broadway in Design for Living and The Threepenny Opera and Off-Broadway in Jean Genet’s Elle and The Seagull opposite Dianne Wiest. He will return to Broadway next spring in Roundabout Theatre Company’s much-anticipated revival of Cabaret. Cumming currently plays Eli Gold on the CBS hit television drama The Good Wife, for which he has been nominated for Emmy, SAG, Satellite and Critics Circle awards. He also appears opposite Lisa Kudrow in Showtime’s Web Therapy and is the host of Masterpiece Mystery on PBS. His eclectic film career has seen him work consecutively with Stanley Kubrick and the Spice Girls, and make appearances in the X Men, Spy Kids, Flintstones and Smurfs franchises, as well as roles in many independent films. He most recently appeared in Travis Fine’s Any Day Now for which he received several Best Actor awards on the film festival circuit. Cumming has published a novel, Tommy’s Tale, released an album of songs, I Bought A Blue Car Today, and last year had his first exhibition of photographs, Alan Cumming Snaps! He regularly performs in concert, most recently with Liza Minnelli at New York’s Town Hall and over the past few years has sung in seasons at the Sydney Opera House, the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles and London’s Vaudeville Theatre. For his humanitarian work, particularly in the field of LGBT rights and equality, he has been honored by the Human Rights Campaign, GLAAD, The Trevor Project and the Matthew Shepard Foundation, to name a few. He was honored with both the Great Scot and Icon of Scotland awards, and was made an OBE in the 2009 Queen’s Honors List. Time magazine named him one of the three most fun people in show business. alancumming.com and @alancumming

BUILDING UPON AN AMAZING LEGACY
The Bucks County Playhouse began life in the late 1700s as a grist mill named Hope Mills. When the building caught fire in 1790, owner Benjamin Parry rebuilt the mills and renamed them the New Hope Mills and in one stroke assigned the mills and the town a new name. According to an article written by Don Walker and published in the New Hope Gazette in 1953, the mills were saved from demolition in the 1930s when the property was purchased by a group of friends, including producer St. John Terrell, playwright Kenyon Nicholson, actor Richard Bennett and Mr. Walker, who were interested in turning it into a “straw hat theater.” Hope Mill Partners was formed and the group began selling stock in the new enterprise in an effort to raise the $15,000 they thought they’d need to complete their dream theater. Playwright Moss Hart, among other Bucks County celebrities of the day, became a stockholder (for $100) and was named to the board. Though he reportedly never attended a meeting, his name and fame are forever connected to the Bucks County Playhouse. Soon a new corporation was formed and the New Hope Theater was born. Through 1938 and into 1939 the corporation had to raise money, manage construction, placate state inspectors and contend with bad weather. Just days before the July 1, 1939, opening, there was no plumbing in the bathrooms, the grounds were unplanted, construction debris was everywhere and the roof of the theater caught fire. Even the theater seats did not arrive until the morning of the opening. Plus, there were all of the issues that come with producing a play. St. John Terrell, “Sinjin” to everyone who knew him, produced the Bucks County Playhouse’s first season. He opened with a hit, Springtime for Henry starring Edward Everett Horton and the rest, as they say, is history. The reputation of the Bucks County Playhouse grew rapidly over the years and it was soon designated as the State Theater of Pennsylvania. Performers from stage, film and television came to New Hope to perform in well-known productions and to help premiere plays, many of which made their way to Broadway. Neil Simon’s Barefoot in the Park made its debut here in 1963 and is now one of the theater’s most beloved plays. The list of actors, actresses, producers and directors who have worked at Bucks County Playhouse is remarkable: Rob Reiner, Mike Nichols, Angela Lansbury, Grace Kelly, Liza Minnelli, William Shatner, Elizabeth Ashley, Robert Redford, Dick Van Dyke, Lillian Gish, June Lockhart, Jack Klugman, Roddy McDowall, Walter Matthau, Merv Griffin, Larry Hagman, Tyne Daly and Audra McDonald are among the many. This list is a veritable who’s who of the entertainment world. In July 2012, after years of neglect the curtain rose again at the Bucks County Playhouse. The foundation was so strong, the heart was so big and the possibilities continue to be endless.
