Dear friends, Chita Rivera is beloved on Broadway. She is “madre” and family to thousands of us. She is a star who adores the chorus. As a member of the chorus years ago, she knows what it is to work anonymously with great dedication and enthusiasm. As a star, her heart knows no bounds. Because of both, she believes that no member of her professional family should ever be left alone in crisis or isolation. Chita Rivera and Broadway Cares have shared a passionate love affair with Broadway for more than 20 years! Since our earliest days, Chita has been one of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS’ great champions, a true and loyal friend. She has appeared in nearly all of our annual events, signed thousands of posters and Playbills, made audience appeals, worn Easter Bonnets, danced at Gypsy of the Year, scorched the floor at Latin Rhythms, been immortalized as a holiday ornament, greeted fans at the Broadway Flea Market & Grand Auction and, through it all, encouraged us because she especially cared for those assisted through our work. My thanks to Michael Croiter for bringing this wonderful opportunity to us and his musical brilliance, Terrence McNally for laying the show’s foundation with words and especially Graciela Daniele for making magic on stage. My sincere thanks to the hundreds of folks who worked on every aspect of this production so generously and with such commitment. Thank you for your support, for showing up with Chita tonight and for together sharing an unforgettable evening of heart, hope and help. But most especially I want to thank BC/EFA’s dear friend, Chita Rivera. Te amamos, Chita! Sincerely,
Tom Viola Executive Director
Chita Rivera An accomplished and versatile actress/singer/dancer, Chita Rivera has won two Tony Awards as Best Leading Actress in a Musical and received seven additional Tony nominations. Chita recently concluded a successful run starring in Roundabout Theatre Company’s revival of The Mystery of Edwin Drood on Broadway. She starred in the Broadway and touring productions of The Dancer’s Life, a dazzling new musical celebrating her spectacular career, written by Terence McNally and directed by Graciela Daniele. She recreated her starring role in The Visit, the new Kander/Ebb/McNally musical at the Signature Theatre in Arlington, VA (originally done at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago in 2001). Chita also starred in the revival of the Broadway musical Nine with Antonio Banderas. Chita trained as a ballerina from age 11 before receiving a scholarship to the American School of Ballet from the legendary George Balanchine. Chita’s first appearance, at 17, was as a principal dancer in Call Me Madam. Her electric performance as “Anita” in the 1957 Broadway premiere of West Side Story brought her stardom; she repeated the role in London. Her career is highlighted by starring roles in Bye Bye Birdie, The Rink (Tony Award), Chicago, Jerry’s Girls, Kiss of the Spider Woman (Tony Award) and the original Broadway casts of Guys and Dolls, Can-Can, Seventh Heaven and Mr. Wonderful. On tour: Born Yesterday, The Rose Tattoo, Call Me Madam, Threepenny Opera, Sweet Charity, Kiss Me Kate, Zorba, Can-Can with the Radio City Music Hall Rockettes. Chita was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama on August 12, 2009. She received the coveted Kennedy Center Honor in December 2002, the first Hispanic woman ever chosen to receive the award. In May 2013, she was appointed to a special Kennedy Center Honors Advisory Committee. Chita’s current solo CD is titled And Now I Swing. Her most treasured production is her daughter, singer/dancer/choreographer Lisa Mordente.
