The same year Beauty & the Beast opens, Disney signs a 99-year lease with the 42nd Street Development Project to renovate the historic New Amsterdam Theatre. Through the efforts of The Walt Disney Company, the theatre was restored to its original splendor and reopened in 1997 with a limited engagement of Alan Menken & Tim Rice’s oratorio, KING DAVID.
THE LION KING opens in November at the New Amsterdam Theatre winning 6 Tony Awards® including Best Musical. The Lion King now plays at the Minskoff Theatre on 45th Street and is the most successful single work in any medium in entertainment history. It has welcomed over 95 million visitors worldwide.

BEAUTY & THE BEAST, the first-ever Disney on Broadway production, opens at the Palace Theatre. In addition to a remarkable 13-year run, Beauty & the Beast has been produced in 28 countries.
Elton John and Tim Rice’s AIDA opens on Broadway, winning 4 Tony Awards and spawning multiple productions around the world .
TARZAN ® opens at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. After its Broadway run, Tarzan played for 10 years in Germany, making it an international hit.
Two new Disney productions debut on Broadway receiving a combined 7 Tony Award wins. PETER AND THE STARCATCHER enjoyed a 2-year run in New York, while NEWSIES won Tony Awards for its score and choreography and played more than 1,000 performances at the Nederlander Theatre.
Disney’s newest hit musical FROZEN opens, bringing to theatrical life the most successful animated film in history. FROZEN sets box office records and is honored with a Best Musical Tony Award nomination, while drawing A-list fans from Kelly Clarkson to Serena Williams to Beyoncé who join the standing ovations at the historic St. James Theatre.

MARY POPPINS, a coproduction with Cameron Mackintosh, opens in London and establishes itself as one of the biggest stage musicals in recent years. The Broadway production ran for a magical 6 years at the New Amsterdam Theatre and has been produced on 3 continents.
The beloved 1990 animated film THE LITTLE MERMAID opens on Broadway and is the #1-selling new musical of the year. Its success continues with new productions worldwide.

ALADDIN, opens at the New Amsterdam Theatre to rave reviews and tremendous audience response. Featuring all the songs from the 1992 film with new materials written especially for Broadway, Aladdin is “exactly what you wished for!” (NBC-TV)
