A HISTORY OF GIVING Equity Fights AIDS was founded in October 1987 by the Council of Actors’ Equity Association. Money raised through the efforts of Equity theatre companies across the country was specifically earmarked for The Actors Fund’s AIDS Initiative.
2009
Broadway Cares was founded in February 1988 by members of The Producers’ Group. Money raised was earmarked to be awarded to AIDS service organizations nationwide, including Equity Fights AIDS.
2010
In May 1992, Equity Fights AIDS and Broadway Cares merged to become Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. The Board of Trustees of this newly established not-for-profit fundraising organization assumed the missions of the previously separate organizations and continues to fund the social service work of The Actors Fund and award grants three times a year to AIDS service organizations nationwide. Unlike most other nonprofit, grant-making organizations, Broadway Cares/ Equity Fights AIDS must raise every single dollar of our philanthropic budget every year in order to fulfill our mission. In turn, BC/EFA works hard to ensure that the money we raise is spent carefully and wisely on programs where these hard-earned funds can have the maximum possible impact.

Dear Friends: Thank you for joining us for the 29th Annual Easter Bonnet Competition. After a seemingly never-ending winter, spring has finally begun to bloom around us as we celebrate today all we’ve accomplished together in the past six weeks. With your help and great support, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS continues to be the single largest funder of The Actors Fund, providing $4.6 million in support last year. Through its safety net of social services, The Fund helps men and women onstage, backstage and throughout the entertainment community who had a safe place to turn when they’ve been in need, crisis or transition. From the earliest days of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, support for the The Actors Fund has been critically important to our mission. BC/EFA provided funding to create the HIV/AIDS Initiative in 1988 and first expanded its support to the Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Initiative in 1996, then the Al Hirschfeld Free Health Clinic, the Actors Fund Work Program, The Dancers’ Resource, supportive housing residences and, most recently, the Artists Health Insurance Resource Center. BC/EFA has awarded The Actors Fund more than $76 million since 1988. Your support also allows BC/EFA’s national grants program to help more than 450 AIDS and family service organizations nationwide, reaching hundreds of thousands of men, women and children who desperately need a helping hand. Earlier this year, Broadway Cares distributed more than $1.7 million to 118 food pantries, congregate meal and meal delivery programs across the country. And just last month, BC/EFA awarded $835,700 to 41 national AIDS service and advocacy organizations. Since 1988 more than $85 million dollars has been put to very good work across the country. You make it possible for Broadway Cares to reach men, women and children in all 50 states. Your efforts over the last few weeks – and your presence here today – will help buy lifesaving medications, fund counseling services, provide groceries and home-delivered meals, offer transportation to and from essential appointments and services, maintain supportive housing and provide essential emergency financial support to keep individuals insured and families in their homes. Your support means those who would otherwise face nearly insurmountable challenges can take care of themselves and those they love. Sometimes the calls for help can be overwhelming. They leave you wondering what any of us can do that will make a difference. But please remember that every dollar in a bucket, every ticket offered to a cabaret benefit, every autographed poster or Playbill sold makes one of our grants a little larger and someone’s life just that much better. Thank you for standing up for the most vulnerable among us. Whether you are part of our theatrical family, a volunteer, a member of Broadway Cares’ Angels Circle, a corporate sponsor or a theatreloving ticket buyer, your commitment and generosity of spirit radiates well beyond the fun we have this afternoon. Your presence ensures that “what we do together makes a difference.” Sincerely,
Tom Viola Executive Director
A BIT OF BONNET HISTORY The precursor to the Easter Bonnet Competition was an informal show in 1986 initiated by wardrobe supervisor Gayle Patton called “The Queen of Hearts.” It took place backstage at the Palace Theatre where the original La Cage aux Folles was a smash hit. Individual cast members from La Cage were judged on poise, personality and talent with the rest of the company voting by putting dollar bills in a jar for each contestant. The effort raised $1,200 for the National AIDS Fund. The event was so much fun for the La Cage company that the following year, Gayle suggested an “Easter Bonnet Competition.” Other Broadway companies were invited to participate. Fundraising ideas flourished, bonnets became more elaborate, stars joined in as presenters and performers and by 1990 – when it was presented on stage at the Majestic Theatre – the Easter Bonnet Competition had become the Broadway community’s premier AIDS fundraising event. Produced by Suzanne Ishee and a host of dedicated coordinators and volunteers for its first eight years, the Easter Bonnet returned to the Palace Theatre in 1995, produced for the first time by Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. In 1998, the show moved to the New Amsterdam Theatre where for nine years it felt as much at home as the peacocks that decorate the theatre’s ornate interior. In 2007, the event followed The Lion King to the Minskoff Theatre.

would like to thank the members of the following unions for their continued participation and support of the audience appeals made once again in the Broadway theatres. With the added support of our friends Off-Broadway and in national touring shows across the country, these appeals are the backbone and muscle of BC/EFA’s annual fundraising efforts. These appeals could not be done without the generous collective efforts of: ACTORS’ EQUITY ASSOCIATION – actors and stage managers AMERICAN FEDERATION of MUSICIANS Local 802 ATPAM – company managers, house managers and press agents THE DRAMATISTS GUILD OF AMERICA IATSE Local 1 – stagehands, carpenters, electricians and props IATSE Local 306 – ushers, ticket takers and doormen IATSE Local 751 – treasurers and ticket sellers MAKEUP ARTISTS and HAIR STYLISTS Local 798 STAGE DIRECTORS AND CHOREOGRAPHERS SOCIETY THEATRICAL WARDROBE UNION Local 764 and, of course, all of our friends at THE BROADWAY LEAGUE for making these efforts welcome in their theatres as a part of their productions. GRANTS Food Program Support Means More Now than Ever
In the basement of Mama’s Kitchen, a venerable San Diego meal delivery program, dozens of brown paper grocery bags are lined up on rows of stainless steel tables. More than 3,000 meals will head out on this Friday from Mama’s Kitchen, one of 118 organizations nationwide receiving grants this year from Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS to provide nutritious meals to those living with HIV/AIDS and other critical illnesses. In January, a record $1,725,000 was awarded to meal delivery programs, congregate meal providers and food pantries in 36 states and Washington, DC. A successful Gypsy of the Year fundraising effort by the theatre community and the ongoing generosity of Broadway Cares’ loyal donors made the record-breaking grant-making possible. Tony, a Minnesota native now living in San Diego, knows firsthand how valuable those grants can be. “After I first learned I was HIV-positive, I was running the streets, not really caring for a lot of years about what was going on with me,” Tony said. “I was really lost until my medical case manager connected me with Mama’s Kitchen. They really supported me and my nutrition, which wasn’t something I thought about.” Broadway Cares’ support of the valiant work of Mama’s Kitchen and the 117 other food service and meal delivery programs receiving grants this year would not be possible without the dedication of the men and women onstage and behind the scenes of Broadway, Off-Broadway and national touring companies. Tony, who now works full time as a database administrator, has gone from client to volunteer. He and his partner, Paul, deliver meals every week for Mama’s Kitchen. “I really get more out of it than I am even consciously aware of,” Tony said. “When I’m out on delivery, sometimes I think that that could be me again tomorrow. I’m just really glad to step up and take my turn doing the job that those folks were doing for me. When I’m driving home after I’ve delivered the last meal I feel refreshed and that things are just good with the world.”

INTERNATIONAL GRANTS Help for South African Organizations Tops $3.9 Million Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS surpassed the $3.9 million mark in grants to South African HIV/AIDS organizations – including $130,000 awarded earlier this year – thanks to the tireless fundraising efforts of Disney’s acclaimed production of The Lion King. In recognition of this extraordinary fundraising and in honor of the South African company members who have joined their American cast mates in these efforts, BC/EFA has sent more than 50 percent of the monies raised by The Lion King companies to AIDS and family service organizations in South Africa, a country beset with the highest HIV/AIDS rates in the world.
