A HISTORY OF GIVING Equity Fights AIDS was founded in October 1987 by the Council of Actors’ Equity Association. Money raised through the efforts of Equity theatre companies across the country was specifically earmarked for The Actors Fund’s AIDS Initiative. 2013
Broadway Cares was founded in February 1988 by members of The Producers’ Group. Money raised was earmarked to be awarded to AIDS service organizations nationwide, including Equity Fights AIDS. In May 1992, Equity Fights AIDS and Broadway Cares merged to become Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. The Board of Trustees of this newly established not-for-profit fundraising organization assumed the missions of the previously separate organizations and continues to fund the social service work of The Actors Fund and award grants three times a year to HIV/AIDS service organizations nationwide.
2014
Unlike most other nonprofit, grant-making organizations, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS must raise every single dollar of our philanthropic budget every year in order to fulfill our mission. In turn, Broadway Cares works hard to ensure that the money we raise is spent carefully and wisely on programs where these hardearned funds can have the maximum possible impact. The Actors Fund

Dear Friends, What do Cheetos, arm casts, koozies, Tina Fey and Cher have in common? They are each creative ways the theatre community has raised funds for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS this red bucket appeals season. The genesis for the Easter Bonnet Competition was a desire from within the Broadway community to channel creativity into helping their friends battling HIV/AIDS. That energy was present 33 years ago, when the first wild and wacky bonnets were designed for the original competition held in the basement of Broadway’s Palace Theatre. That creative spirit has been especially present this spring, as theatre companies on Broadway, Off-Broadway and on tour have come up with new ways to inspire audiences to give back. Of course, dollars in a bucket and autographed posters and Playbills will always be the bread and butter of any audience appeal season. But it has been particularly inspiring to witness the plethora of creative ideas that have blossomed this spring. At The Prom, company members encouraged audience donations with “The Barry Glickman Big Gay Snack Pack” (which included Cheetos and a pride flag). Dear Evan Hansen auctioned the show’s signature “Connor” arm cast signed by all the actors. Among the items available for a donation at Frozen was a drink koozie, allowing “the cold to never bother you (anyway).” At the August Wilson Theatre, Mean Girls book writer Tina Fey made multiple onstage appearances to drum up support. And the incomparable Cher surprised audiences at The Cher Show to auction an onstage meet-and-greet with her and VIP tickets to her upcoming Madison Square Garden concert. All of this creativity resulted in an incredible amount of generosity. Each unique experience and all the theatrical memorabilia provide lifesaving medications, counseling, groceries and home-delivered meals, transportation to and from essential appointments, supportive housing and more to men, women and children who desperately need a helping hand. This support allows Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS to help more than 450 AIDS and family service organizations in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C. Earlier this year, Broadway Cares distributed $2.1 million to 125 food pantries, congregate meal programs and meal delivery services across the country. Just last month, Broadway Cares awarded $1.1 million to 49 national AIDS service and advocacy organizations. In June, our national grants committee will meet to another round of grants across the country. And before summer’s end, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS will send more than $5 million to The Actors Fund in 2019. Thanks to you, the Fund will be able to help men and women onstage, backstage and throughout the entertainment community by providing a safe place to turn when they’re in need, crisis or transition. All of that support coming from autographed posters and Playbills. And yes, the occasional koozie. Sincerely,
Tom Viola Executive Director
A BIT OF BONNET HISTORY The precursor to the Easter Bonnet Competition was an informal show in 1986 initiated by wardrobe supervisors Gayle Patton and Irene Bunis called “The Queen of Hearts.” It took place backstage at the Palace Theatre where the original La Cage aux Folles was a smash hit. Individual cast members from La Cage were judged on poise, personality and talent with the rest of the company voting by putting dollar bills in a jar for each contestant. The effort raised $1,200 for the National AIDS Fund. The event was so much fun for the La Cage company that the following year, Gayle suggested an “Easter Bonnet Competition.” Other Broadway companies were invited to participate. Fundraising ideas flourished, bonnets became more elaborate, stars joined in as presenters and performers and by 1990 – when it was presented on stage at the Majestic Theatre – the Easter Bonnet Competition had become the Broadway community’s premier AIDS fundraising event. Produced by Suzanne Ishee and a host of dedicated coordinators and volunteers for its first eight years, the Easter Bonnet returned to the Palace Theatre in 1995, produced for the first time by Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. In 1998, the show moved to the New Amsterdam Theatre where for nine years it felt as much at home as the peacocks that decorate the theatre’s ornate interior. In 2007, the event followed The Lion King to the Minskoff Theatre. 1987 1988 1989 1990 1991 1992 1993 1994 1995 1996 1997

Broadway Cares is deeply grateful to all who, over the years, have made this event into a wildly successful fundraiser and a yearly celebration of the theatre community’s commitment to those facing the challenges of AIDS and other health-related emergencies.

THE ACTORS FUND
Broadway Cares’ Support Turns Daily Battles Into Victories The life of an entertainment professional is often romanticized, but when it comes to having comprehensive and affordable health care, the industry can be unreliable. “It’s a great business, except when it’s not,” lamented Broadway actor Ann Harada. Harada was among a group of Broadway luminaries who recently underscored the importance of the safety net provided by the vital social service programs of The Actors Fund. “They are our safe place,” actor Wesley Taylor said. Tony Award nominee Kate Baldwin added, “They are completely essential to our community.” Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS is the single largest financial supporter of these indispensable programs. What started as support for The Actors Fund to help those living with HIV/AIDS get financial assistance and essential case management has grown to include a wide spectrum of support for everyone
in “the business,” reflecting the evolving needs of professionals in the industry. Last year marked the 30th year of Broadway Cares’ support of the programs of The Actors Fund. Since 1988, Broadway Cares and The Actors Fund have remained committed to providing a helping hand and supportive shoulder to those in the entertainment industry and performing arts when they’re in a time of need, crisis or transition. Broadway Cares awarded $5.9 million to The Fund’s social service programs in 2018. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS has awarded The Actors Fund more than $95 million since our partnership began. “We are proud stewards of this support,” The Actors Fund Chief Executive Office Joe Benincasa said. “How Broadway Cares inspires our community is absolutely miraculous and it makes The Fund’s good work possible.”

n 2018, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS expanded its support to include three additional programs. The Safe Workplace Initiative offers resources, counseling and training to fight harassment, bullying and bias within the industry. Senior Services assists entertainment professionals at least 65 years old in addressing the myriad issues they may face on a daily basis. Looking Ahead, a program helping young performers make a healthy, successful transition to adulthood, opened The Paul Libin Center, its New York City home. The center was named in honor of Broadway Cares President Emeritus Paul Libin.

would like to thank the members of the following unions for their continued participation and support of the audience appeals made once again in the Broadway theatres. With the added support of our friends Off-Broadway and in national touring shows across the country, these appeals are the backbone and muscle of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS’ annual fundraising efforts. These appeals could not be done without the generous collective efforts of: ACTORS’ EQUITY ASSOCIATION – actors and stage managers AMERICAN FEDERATION of MUSICIANS Local 802 ATPAM – company managers, house managers and press agents THE DRAMATISTS GUILD OF AMERICA IATSE Local 1 – stagehands, carpenters, electricians and props IATSE Local 306 – ushers, ticket takers and doormen IATSE Local 751 – treasurers and ticket sellers MAKEUP ARTISTS and HAIR STYLISTS Local 798 STAGE DIRECTORS AND CHOREOGRAPHERS SOCIETY THEATRICAL WARDROBE UNION Local 764 and, of course, all of our friends at THE BROADWAY LEAGUE for making these efforts welcome in their theatres as a part of their productions. For 30 years we have said, “WHAT WE DO TOGETHER MAKES A DIFFERENCE” This proves it. Our sincere thanks to all.
RED BUCKET VO LU N T E E R S An army of 147 tireless volunteers and Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS staffers enhanced the Easter Bonnet Competition fundraising efforts this season. They held buckets and sold autographed memorabilia in the lobbies of Broadway and Off-Broadway theatres alongside company members of participating shows. Over the course of six weeks of audience appeals, volunteers filled 3,329 shifts at 986 appeals. Our sincere thanks to these unsung heroes, Broadway Cares’ famous bucket brigade.

Hi. My name is Jim Heslin. I own and operate 2 of the nicest and most private vacation rental properties in Key West. Enjoy the “Keys Breeze,” keeping the islands comfortable through July.
Off a quiet lane located in the heart of Old Town, the Secret Villas are stunning 3 bedroom, 3 bathroom homes each with their own private heated pool. The fenced-in private pool is surrounded by lush gardens, natural vegetation and tropical canopies, providing our guests with the privacy and intimacy that Key West visitors are looking for. Newly renovated inside and out so that you and your guests experience Key West in a clean & comfortable environment where everything is just right. 50% of the profits from every Secret Villa rental is donated to Broadway Cares/Equity Fight AIDS and AIDS Help in Key West. Make a difference while enjoying the sun and fun of the Florida Keys.
NATIONAL GRANTS Food Grants Committee Increases Support to Wide-Reaching, Vital Organizations For people with limited resources and access to information on nutrition and decent food that ensure their medication works effectively, healthy meals can be the difference between life and death. “My life got unmanageable,” said Tina, who lives in Atlanta and is HIV-positive. “I was hungry. I got sick of my own self. Someone told me I had to change. I said, ‘Change what?’ And they replied, ‘Everything.’” Fortunately, Georgia residents like Tina can turn to Open Hand Atlanta, a grantee of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. One of the largest community-based providers of homedelivered meals and nutrition services in the United States, the organization empowers people living with chronic diseases to live healthier, more productive lives through the medicinal powers of food. Open Hand Atlanta and similar organizations in major metropolitan areas across the country save countless lives every day. In January, building on many years of supporting these organizations, Broadway Cares’ food grants committee increased its yearly support for 13 of these wide-reaching and indispensable meal delivery organizations to a $40,000 grant. The organizations receiving this increased support are Community Servings in Boston, Food & Friends in Washington, D.C., Food Outreach in St. Louis, God’s Love We Deliver in New York City, Lifelong in Seattle, Mama’s Kitchen in San Diego, Metropolitan Area Neighborhood Nutrition Alliance in Philadelphia, Moveable Feast in Baltimore, Open Arms of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Open Hand in Atlanta, Project Angel Food in Los Angeles, Project Angel Heart in Denver and Project Open Hand in San Francisco. In total this year, the food grants committee awarded a record $2,143,000 to 125 organizations in 34 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico. These grants are reaching food service agencies large and small, in city, suburban and rural areas that face programmatic budget cuts pushed through by current state and federal administrations. The grants provide not only help, but hope for so many. “Now,” Tina said, “I’m HIV positive and I live a positive life. Open Hand has given me nutrition back in my life. Nutrition is a big part because if my car breaks down, then I can’t drive.” Broadway Cares’ food grants would not be possible without tireless commitment and achievement from the men and women onstage, backstage and behind the scenes at Broadway, Off-Broadway and national touring productions, in addition to countless Broadway Cares supporters. Broadway Cares’ grants committee consists of members of the theatre community who champion the fundraising efforts at their shows. Twenty-five actors and stage managers reviewed the grant applications in January. Their decision to increase the grants made to 13 of the country’s most wide-reaching and comprehensive organizations, fueled by the support of Broadway Cares supporters, will make a tangible, lifesaving difference in the lives of thousands of individuals living with HIV/AIDS and other critical illnesses. “Thank you so much,” Tina said. “Without you, I know I wouldn’t be as healthy as I am now. Without your donation, I just don’t know where I’d be.”
INTERNATIONAL GRANTS Sharing Broadway’s Generosity with South Africa The incidence of HIV/AIDS in South Africa remains among the highest in the world as 7 million people live with the disease. It’s a reality that continues to hit close to the heart for many in the cast of Disney’s acclaimed production of The Lion King. As natives of South Africa, they’ve seen the epidemic’s toll first-hand in their hometowns and villages. In honor of the South African company members who have steadfastly joined their American cast mates in The Lion King’s fundraising for Broadway Cares, more than $4.6 million has been awarded in grants to South African HIV/AIDS organizations. This year, $185,000 was shared with 17 service providers identified by the South African actors in the Broadway and national touring companies of The Lion King. South African service providers receiving grants from Broadway Cares support a wide scope of people in need, ranging from HIV-positive individuals in small, rural villages to homeless children and marginalized women in urban areas. From Durban, Johannesburg and Spring to Cape Town, Tongatt and Umthwalume, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS is proud to share the successful fundraising by the casts of The Lion King with those in South Africa who so urgently need a helping hand.
