A HISTORY OF GIVING Equity Fights AIDS was founded in October 1987 by the Council of Actors’ Equity Association. Money raised through the efforts of Equity theatre companies across the country was specifically earmarked for The Actors Fund’s AIDS Initiative. 2012

Broadway Cares was founded in February 1988 by members of The Producers’ Group. Money raised was earmarked to be awarded to AIDS service organizations nationwide, including Equity Fights AIDS. In May 1992, Equity Fights AIDS and Broadway Cares merged to become Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. The Board of Trustees of this newly established not-for-profit fundraising organization assumed the missions of the previously separate organizations and continues to fund the social service work of The Actors Fund and award grants three times a year to HIV/AIDS service organizations nationwide.

2013

Unlike most other nonprofit, grant-making organizations, Broadway Cares/ Equity Fights AIDS must raise every single dollar of our philanthropic budget every year in order to fulfill our mission. In turn, BC/EFA works hard to ensure that the money we raise is spent carefully and wisely on programs where these hard-earned funds can have the maximum possible impact. Dear Friends: While the name of our organization has always focused on Broadway, it is in some ways a misnomer. As the conduit for the philanthropic spirit of theatre artists coast to coast, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS thrives thanks to the great support for our mission happening all across our nation. This spring fundraising season, 27 national tours across the country appealed to audiences in support of Broadway Cares. From the cast of Aladdin raising money in Chicago to the company of Wicked in Nashville, audiences in scores of cities joined forces with these companies to raise funds and make a difference. They joined with 35 shows here in New York - on Broadway and off - in our fundraising efforts. What is particularly wonderful about this cross-country philanthropy is that it goes right back into the communities and cities who offer that support, from New York City to New Orleans, Sarasota to Seattle. This January, 121 food pantries, congregate meal programs and meal delivery programs across the country received more than $2 million from Broadway Cares. These grants will reach hundreds of thousands of men, women and children facing the challenges of living with HIV/AIDS and other serious illness while struggling with diminished community resources, personal crises and economic insecurity. Earlier this month, Broadway Cares awarded $960,000 to 43 nationally recognized AIDS service and advocacy organizations. And the fruits of your generosity will continue to change lives in the months to come. This summer, during the largest of our grant rounds, you will provide much-needed support to health clinics, emergency financial assistance services, substance abuse and harm reduction organizations and quality of life programs. These efforts are also helping all performing artists as Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS awarded $5.5 million to The Actors Fund last year. Our unique partnership grew from the singular support of the HIV/AIDS Initiative 30 years ago into today’s indispensable safety net of social services for all in the entertainment industry and performing arts, helping thousands in crisis, need or transition. No matter where in the country you live or how you show your support, thank you for being a part of our family. Together we prove, every day, that what we do together makes a difference. Sincerely,

Tom Viola Executive Director

A BIT OF BONNET HISTORY The precursor to the Easter Bonnet Competition was an informal show in 1986 initiated by wardrobe supervisor Gayle Patton called “The Queen of Hearts.” It took place backstage at the Palace Theatre where the original La Cage aux Folles was a smash hit. Individual cast members from La Cage were judged on poise, personality and talent with the rest of the company voting by putting dollar bills in a jar for each contestant. The effort raised $1,200 for the National AIDS Fund. The event was so much fun for the La Cage company that the following year, Gayle suggested an “Easter Bonnet Competition.” Other Broadway companies were invited to participate. Fundraising ideas flourished, bonnets became more elaborate, stars joined in as presenters and performers and by 1990 – when it was presented on stage at the Majestic Theatre – the Easter Bonnet Competition had become the Broadway community’s premier AIDS fundraising event. Produced by Suzanne Ishee and a host of dedicated coordinators and volunteers for its first eight years, Easter Bonnet returned to the Palace Theatre in 1995, produced for the first time by Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. In 1998, the show moved to the New Amsterdam Theatre where for nine years it felt as much at home as the peacocks that decorate the theatre’s ornate interior. In 2007, the event followed The Lion King to the Minskoff Theatre. 1987 $ 18,000 1988 $ 51,000 1989 $ 137,000 1990 $ 226,000 1991 $ 279,000 1992 $ 500,000 1993 $ 848,000 1994 $1,001,000 1995 $1,127,000 1996 $1,304,000 1997 $1,474,000

Today we present the 32nd edition. Broadway Cares is deeply grateful to all who, over the years, have made this event into a wildly successful fundraiser and a yearly celebration of the theatre community’s commitment to those facing the challenges of AIDS and other health-related emergencies.

The cast members of When Pigs Fly were gleeful participants in all the Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS fundraisers during the show’s original run in the mid-1990s (who could ever forget their rendition of Dragtime?). Pigs also featured some politically provocative torch songs by lyricist Mark Waldrop and composer Dick Gallagher. These were updated for the ill-fated 2017 revival that rose from the ashes with its full cast intact as a spectacular benefit for The Actors Fund benefit earlier this month, for which Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS was presenting sponsor. From the revival cast, Jacob Hoffman shows you how he torched it up.

NATIONAL GRANTS Broadway Gives Back with Nutritious Meals Twenty Broadway stage managers and actors, who led their show’s efforts in the fall fundraising campaign, sat around the long conference room table, surrounded by paper that had been fiercely annotated with thorough and thoughtful notes. They were throwing a lifeline to hundreds of thousands of people across the country who were reaching out for just a little help. “It’s absolutely inspiring,” said Beverly Jenkins, who’s currently leading the stage management team at A Bronx Tale The Musical on Broadway. “My favorite part of reading all this is realizing how dedicated so many organizations and individual people are to helping and supporting those in their communities.” Jenkins and her colleagues were part of a little-seen Broadway tradition. Three times a year, a group like this committed crew meet to celebrate recent fundraising successes by awarding much-needed grants to social service agencies nationwide through Broadway Cares’ National Grants Program. The first round each calendar year focuses on food pantries, congregate meal services and meal delivery programs. This year, a record $2,015,000 was awarded to 121 organizations in 37 states, Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C. For Jenkins, Fraternity House in Escondido, CA, stood out among the applications because of the connection she drew within her own family. “My brother, Gerald, had substance abuse issues and received support while residing in a Queens, NY, drug and alcohol rehabilitation home,” Jenkins said. This year, Fraternity House received a $10,000 grant from Broadway Cares, allowing them to continue offering healthy meals and lifesaving housing services to people facing the same challenges Gerald did. Across the table, L. Steven Taylor, who plays Mufasa in Broadway’s The Lion King, was thrilled to discover that an organization he supported in his childhood is one of Broadway Cares’ grantees. “I grew up Catholic in Indianapolis, and I remember participating in a church initiative where we collected canned goods for the needy during the winter months,” Taylor said. “The Damien Center was one of the organizations we used to donate to.” The Damien Center, a leader in HIV care and prevention in Indianapolis, has a food pantry focused on serving the unique nutritional needs of HIV-positive patients. The center received a $15,000 grant from the committee in 2018. Sharon Wheatley, from Broadway’s Come From Away, was particularly moved by the efforts of an organization called SMART because of its nearly exclusive focus on women and children with HIV/AIDS. Wheatley recognizes through her own experiences that mothers and children often need additional support in difficult times. “Even though I am an actor, I am a woman and a mom first,” Wheatley said. “There is a deep misunderstanding of what women need and how they can best serve their kids.” The grants committee awarded SMART, which is based in East Harlem, $15,000 in support of its food-focused initiative. Additional grant rounds will occur this spring. Since 1988, more than $103.6 million has been awarded through the National Grants Program. For Taylor, working with Broadway Cares and being a member of the food grants committee is part of his duty as an actor. “This is one small way that we can step into that role as leaders and make a huge impact in the lives of those who are less fortunate,” Taylor said.

INTERNATIONAL GRANTS Sharing Broadway’s Generosity with South Africa

The incidence of HIV/AIDS in South Africa remains among the highest in the world as 7 million people live with the disease. It’s a reality that continues to hit close to the heart for many in the cast of Disney’s acclaimed production of The Lion King. As natives of South Africa, they’ve seen the epidemic’s toll first-hand in their hometowns and villages. In honor of the South African company members who have steadfastly joined their American cast mates in The Lion King’s fundraising for Broadway Cares, more than $4.5 million has been awarded in grants to South African HIV/AIDS organizations. This year, $187,500 was shared with 18 service providers identified by the South African actors in the Broadway and national touring companies of The Lion King. South African service providers receiving grants from Broadway Cares support a wide scope of people in need, ranging from HIV-positive individuals in small, rural villages to homeless children and marginalized women in urban areas. From Durban, Johannesburg and Pretoria to Cape Town, Tongatt and Umthwalume, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS is proud to share the successful fundraising by the casts of The Lion King with those in South Africa who so urgently need a helping hand.
