July 20, 2013 Dear Friends: Thank you for joining Dancers Responding to AIDS, a program of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, for another magnificent edition of Fire Island Dance Festival. For 19 years, we’ve been honored to share the grace and beauty of dance with all of you here in Fire Island Pines. One of the most inspiring qualities of this community is its willingness and determination to step up for those among us most in need of help – whether it’s for a neighbor living with HIV/AIDS, families without healthy meals or, as we’ve seen most recently, responding to the devastation of a natural disaster, following closely on the heels of a terrible fire. Hurricane Sandy tested our collective resolve. The storm dealt a stinging blow to millions of people in a dozen states and especially hit our family hard here on Fire Island. Yet we have persevered and now eagerly and joyously return to the Pines. Your presence here and support of Dancers Responding to AIDS ultimately means that the most vulnerable among us will have access to life-saving medicines and counseling, nutritious meals and supportive housing, emergency financial assistance and so much more. We are grateful to our sponsors, ticket buyers and generous providers of services and housing who are joining us for another year. And we extend a special welcome to our first-time guests. You’re in for something special. Thank you to the dedicated members of the Fire Island Dance Festival Committee, with a special shout-out to long-time friends and committee co-chairs Laura Hartstein and Roger Kluge. Your unwavering support of DRA and Broadway Cares is remarkable. Since we presented the first Fire Island Dance Festival in drizzling rain on a makeshift stage for an audience of 100, we’ve raised more than $2.9 million to help those struggling with HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening illnesses. Over the years, the exceptional talents of hundreds of dancers have made Fire Island Dance Festival a defining event for DRA. We are in tremendous debt to the world-class dancers and choreographers who make this festival possible, as well as all of the volunteers and theatre professionals who use their vacation time to transform this venue into a showcase for stunning dance performances. Thank you for sharing with us the resilience and personal resolve you’re using to restore the warm welcome of summer in the Pines. We are very grateful for your support and especially your great generosity of spirit. As you watch today’s dancers, we hope you will do so with a loving nod to the past, a sense of pride in all that has been accomplished today and a bright, hopeful eye to the future. “This,” as we said at the very first event, “is why we dance!” Best wishes,
Tom Viola Executive Director Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS
Denise Roberts Hurlin Founding Director Dancers Responding to AIDS
July 20, 2013
Welcome, Dancers Responding to AIDS! Fire Island Pines is experiencing a very challenging year as we recover from the devastation from Hurricane Sandy. The hurricane struck a blow to all of the Fire Island communities. We are making every effort to get the community back to its normal, vibrant and magical self. Fire Island Dance Festival, now in its 19th year, is one of the most treasured and anticipated cultural events of our community and it will be all the more meaningful this year, as it brings us together in the spirit of celebration, tradition and the arts when we need them the most. It is especially meaningful to have the dance festival this year as it says out loud, “The Pines is back!” We note with pride and gratitude that Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, the beneficiary of the dance festival, made a generous donation to the community to assist in hurricane recovery. This money was used to help clear the harbor of debris and restore electrical service. By attending this year’s festival you are again showing community spirit and pride as we help Dancers Responding to AIDS in its impressive record of supporting the arts and people with AIDS and other critical illnesses. It is great to have Fire Island Dance Festival back again.

ABOUT DAN CE RS RES P ONDIN G TO AIDS In a New York City apartment more than 20 years ago, two dozen dancers brainstormed what they could do to help so many of their colleagues who were battling AIDS. Denise Roberts Hurlin and Hernando Cortez, dancers with Paul Taylor Dance Company at the time, mobilized the group and ultimately created Dancers Responding to AIDS in 1991. It was the dance community’s first ongoing effort to raise awareness and money to directly help those living with AIDS. The vitality of DRA comes from the extraordinary compassion and efforts of the performing arts community to fund a safety net of social services for those in need. As a program of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, DRA helps support more than 450 AIDS and family service organizations nationwide as well as the essential programs of The Actors Fund, including the HIV/AIDS Initiative, the Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Initiative and The Dancers’ Resource. Funds raised by DRA and Broadway Cares help to ensure that those most in need have access to life-saving medicines, counseling, healthy meals, supportive housing, emergency financial assistance and more. DRA has proven since 1991 that what we do together makes a difference. Denise Roberts Hurlin, Founding Director Christopher F. Davis, Producer Sarah Cardillo, Development Officer

MO RO CCA Humorist, actor and writer Mo Rocca is best known for his off-beat news reports and satirical commentary. Currently a correspondent for CBS Sunday Morning, he’s also a panelist on NPR’s hit weekly quiz show Wait, Wait...Don’t Tell Me! and the host of Cooking Channel’s My Grandmother’s Ravioli, a heartwarming and hilarious series in which he learns to cook from America’s grandparents. Rocca spent four seasons as a correspondent on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and four seasons as a correspondent on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. A former president and author of Harvard University’s Hasty Pudding Show, Rocca is no stranger to the stage. He’s performed on Broadway as Vice Principal Douglas Panch in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and as Doody on the Southeast Asian tour of Grease. Rocca’s book All the Presidents’ Pets: The Story of One Reporter Who Refused to Roll Over is a tour-de-force of investigative journalism that blows the lid off of a longheld Washington secret: presidential pets are more than just photo ops. Rocca began his career in TV as a writer and producer for the Emmy and Peabody Award-winning PBS children’s series Wishbone. He went on to write and produce for other kids’ series, including ABC’s Pepper Ann and Nickelodeon’s The Wubbulous World of Dr. Seuss, a pre-school series combining the whimsy of Seuss characters with the magic of Jim Henson puppetry. Rocca’s varied professional experiences prepared him for the broad range of topics he’d tackle on The Daily Show, where his profiles ranged from a man so obsessed with First Ladies that he dresses up as Florence Harding to a husband-and-wife pet mummification team. A native of Washington, DC, Rocca earned a bachelor’s degree at Harvard and resides in New York City.
