The truth is hard. The truth is hidden. The truth must be pursued. The truth is hard to hear. The truth is rarely simple. The truth isn’t so obvious. The truth is necessary. The truth can’t be glossed over. The truth has no agenda. The truth can’t be manufactured. The truth doesn’t take sides. The truth isn’t red or blue. The truth is hard to accept. The truth pulls no punches. The truth is powerful. The truth is under attack. The truth is worth defending. The truth requires taking a stand. The truth is more important now than ever.

July 15, 2017 Welcome to Fire Island Dance Festival! Now in its 23rd year, Fire Island Dance Festival is one of the most treasured and anticipated cultural events of our community. It has been called by one dance critic “the jewel in the crown of American dance festivals” and has been included several times in The New York Times’ most important dance events of the year. The Pines is justly proud to host such a premier event. By attending this year’s festival, you will be dazzled by some of the world’s best dance companies, will share in the community spirit of the Pines and will help Dancers Responding to AIDS in its impressive record of supporting both the arts and people with HIV/AIDS and other critical illnesses. FIPPOA salutes the dance festival, the committee, the dancers and all who give so much to make this festival possible each summer. It is a special pleasure this summer to again welcome Fire Island Dance Festival.

Jay Pagano Ed Schulhafer President Vice President

July 15, 2017 Dear Friends:

a program of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS

Thank you for joining us at the 23rd edition of Fire Island Dance Festival. In a time when unity and togetherness in the face of adversity and opposition are more important than ever, we are endlessly grateful for the relationships old and new we’ve cultivated over the last 23 years. What better place is there to celebrate dance, art, equality and love than Fire Island? This island has long been a cherished safe haven for the voices of those who’ve been marginalized and stigmatized. Today, while some may try to silence those voices, Fire Island firmly remains an inviting respite; a place where all are welcome to be who they want to be, and love who they want to love. As affordable health care and funding for social service programs become increasingly threatened in the current political climate, we stand together to ensure a brighter tomorrow for the most vulnerable among us. Together, Dancers Responding to AIDS, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and your support are helping a neighbor living with HIV/AIDS, a family in need of healthy meals, a performing artist facing a debilitating injury and so many additional deserving individuals. We are so grateful for the world-class dancers, choreographers and dance companies who make this festival possible, as well as the multitudes of theatrical professionals and volunteers who transform this waterfront escape into a dancer’s paradise. Thank you to our sponsors, ticket buyers and generous providers of services and housing who are joining us for another year. And we extend a special welcome to our first-time guests. You’re in for something special. We are forever indebted to the dedicated members of the Fire Island Dance Festival Committee and this year’s Benefit Committee for your dedication to ensuring our fundraising remains strong this year and every year. Undeterred by what is happening around the world and in our own country, at Fire Island Dance Festival, we are all welcome. We are empowered. We are home. Best wishes,

Tom Viola Executive Director Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS

Cady Huffman hit the pavement running from her hometown of Santa Barbara, CA, with solid professional training in ballet, opera and theatre. She was soon cast as a teenage drag queen in the Los Angeles company of La Cage aux Folles. That show brought her to Broadway where she was quickly snatched up by Bob Fosse to dance in his last original musical, Big Deal. Throughout her 35 years as a professional performer she has also written, produced and directed for theatre and film as well as mentoring young writers, directors and musicians. She received a Tony Award for her performance in The Producers. But what drives her are the collaborations with creative minds that have taken her all over the world and stretched her ambitions in directions she has dreamed of since her days on the hardscrabble streets of Santa Barbara.

AL BLACKSTONE Al Blackstone is a New York City-based director, choreographer and educator and the recipient of the Capezio A.C.E. Award for Choreographic Excellence. Dance Magazine has called his work “sweet, silly, sly ... infectious.” While working mostly in musical theatre, his passion for contemporary and jazz dance enriches his unique approach to storytelling. He continues to tell stories around the world to anyone who will listen.

CALEB TEICHER & COMPANY Caleb Teicher & Company presents new work that blends traditional American dance forms in a modern context. Past engagements include Hudson Valley Dance Festival, Jacob’s Pillow’s Inside/Out Series, Paris Jazz Roots Dance Festival, Gibney Dance, The Yard on Martha’s Vineyard and La MaMa. Upcoming engagements include Guggenheim Bilbao, PS21 Chatham and the Vancouver Tap Festival.

In 2003, Delgado received the Princess Grace Award and began her apprenticeship with Miami City Ballet. She was promoted to principal dancer in 2008.

EVIDENCE, A DANCE COMPANY Founded by Ronald K. Brown in 1985 and based in Brooklyn, EVIDENCE, A Dance Company focuses on the seamless integration of traditional African dance with contemporary choreography and spoken word. EVIDENCE provides a unique view of human struggles, tragedies and triumphs. Brown uses movement as a way to reinforce the importance of community in African-American culture and to acquaint audiences with the beauty of traditional African forms and rhythms.

LORIN LATARRO Lorin Latarro recently choreographed Broadway’s Waitress, the Broadway transfer of Donmar Warehouse’s Les Liaisons Dangereuses with Janet McTeer and Liev Shreiber, Waiting for Godot with Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart, and was the associate choreographer of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. Latarro is a BFA graduate of and adjunct professor at The Juilliard School.

MAKERS DANCE COMPANY Makers Dance Company is dedicated to the growth of art through dance and emotionality on different stages and media platforms. The company believes in bridging the gap between traditional classicism, drama and modern ideas, bringing and creating a new repertoire inspired by historical tales, and new fictional and non-fictional stories, using the beauty and bravado of ballet with the modern ideas and movement for the 21st century.

MIAMI CITY BALLET Founded in 1985 by Miami philanthropist Toby Lerner Ansin and founding artistic director and ballet legend Edward Villella, Miami City Ballet is admired as one of the world’s preeminent interpreters of the choreography of George Balanchine. Its repertory of 100 ballets, including a number of world premieres, was built upon the Balanchine repertory, style and technique, then expanded to include beloved classical works of importance and exciting new choreography by contemporary and groundbreaking artists. Artistic Directror Lourdes Lopez was recruited to direct the company in 2012.

PERIDANCE CONTEMPORARY DANCE COMPANY Peridance Contemporary Dance Company, founded by Artistic Director Igal Perry in 1984, is a New York City-based repertory company committed to leadership and creative collaboration in dance performance and dance education. The company aspires to advance the performing arts by offering the public visionary choreography and strongly executed performances, nationally and internationally, and by fostering an intelligent appreciation of dance as an art form.

PONTUS LIDBERG DANCE Choreographer, filmmaker and dancer Pontus Lidberg is best known for his dance film The Rain, for which he received numerous awards around the world. His subsequent film Labyrinth Within won Best Picture at Lincoln Center’s Dance on Camera Festival. As a choreographer for the stage, Lidberg has created works for dance companies such as New York City Ballet, Martha Graham Dance Company, Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, Semperoper Ballet Dresden, Le Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève, The Royal Danish Ballet, Beijing Dance Theatre, The Royal Swedish Ballet, Morphoses and for his own group, Pontus Lidberg Dance.

RASHAUN MITCHELL + SILAS RIENER Since 2010, Rashaun Mitchell and Silas Riener have created dance in response to complex and active spatial environments, often merging elements of fantasy, absurdity and quiet contemplation into challenging multifaceted performance. After working together for years in the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, Mitchell and Riener developed a keen interest in the way abstraction and representation coincide in the body. Historical influences and aesthetic forms collapse into a visually charged, hybrid physical language.

KLEBER REBELLO Kleber Rebello was born in Rio de Janeiro and began his ballet studies at the age of 10 at the Escola de Danca Spinelli. In 2009 he attended the summer intensive course and received a scholarship for the Miami City Ballet School. In 2010 he joined the Miami City Ballet company as student/company apprentice, was promoted to corps de ballet the same year and to soloist in 2011. He was then promoted to principal soloist in 2012 and to principal dancer in 2013. Rebello was selected by Dance Magazine as one of its annual “25 to watch” in 2011.

JAMES WHITESIDE In 2002, James Whiteside joined Boston Ballet II, where he continued to train under the tutelage of its director, Raymond Lukens, now director of American Ballet Theatre’s National Training Curriculum. Whiteside joined the corps de ballet of Boston Ballet in 2003 and became a second soloist in 2006. He was promoted to first soloist in 2008 and to principal dancer with Boston Ballet in 2009. Whiteside joined American Ballet Theatre as a soloist in September 2012 and was named a principal dancer in October 2013.

In a New York City apartment 26 years ago, two dozen dancers brainstormed what they could do to help so many of their colleagues who were battling AIDS. Denise Roberts Hurlin and Hernando Cortez, dancers with Paul Taylor Dance Company at the time, mobilized the group and ultimately created Dancers Responding to AIDS in 1991. It was the dance community’s first ongoing effort to raise awareness and money to directly help those living with AIDS. The vitality of DRA comes from the extraordinary compassion and efforts of the performing arts community to fund a safety net of social services for those in need. As a program of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, DRA helps support the essential programs of The Actors Fund, including the HIV/AIDS Initiative, the Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Initiative and The Dancers’ Resource, while also providing grants to more than 450 AIDS and family service organizations in all 50 states. Funds raised by DRA and Broadway Cares help to ensure that those most in need have access to lifesaving medications, counseling, healthy meals, emergency financial assistance and more. DRA has proven since 1991 that what we do together makes a difference.

Monica Bill Barnes & Company is a contemporary American dance company that brings dance where it does not belong. The company creates and produces each work entirely from its own rulebook – dancing to radio interviews on the biggest stages in the world, hosting a weekly show in a crowded office party or leading a choreographed exercise routine in an art museum. Within each of these new contexts and borrowed environments, they constantly find humor in awkward, everyday triumphs and failures. Together, this team creates the most unlikely experiences for every kind of audience. monicabillbarnes.com
