It has taken 30 years to reunite back in the place we met. In that time we have grown a little older, and hopefully a little wiser. We lost our beloved Lee, and so many other friends far too soon from a terrible disease, but from our loss we have found purpose. We may have lived our lives thousands of miles apart, but our shared commitment to help those affected with HIV and AIDS has brought us back to where it all began.
Thank you, David Newell, for bringing the Southwest Louisiana AIDS Council to see where the grants begin. Welcome SLAC to Fire Island Dance Festival, and David.... WELCOME
HOME!

July 21, 2018 a program of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS
Dear Friends: Thank you for joining us at this summer’s edition of Fire Island Dance Festival. We are endlessly grateful for the relationships old and new we’ve cultivated over the last 24 years. And there is truly no better place than Fire Island to celebrate these relationships through dance, art and love. The island has long been a beloved respite for the LGBTQ community; an unparalleled safe space where people are free to be who they are and love who they love. Fire Island sets the stage, literally and figuratively, for honest, beautiful and free artistic expression. Elsewhere across the country, however, many people are not fortunate to have a cherished safe haven like the Pines. As affordable health care and funding for social service programs become increasingly threatened in the current political climate, we stand together to protect and support the most vulnerable among us. Together, Dancers Responding to AIDS, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and your support are providing healthy meals, lifesaving medication and emergency financial assistance to people in need across the country and across the street. We are so grateful for the world-class dancers, choreographers and dance companies who make this festival and our work possible, as well as the theatrical professionals and volunteers who transform the idyllic bay into a stunning waterfront stage. Thank you to our sponsors, ticket buyers and generous providers of services and housing who are joining us for another year. And we extend a special welcome to our first-time guests. You’re in for something special. We are forever indebted to the dedicated members of the Fire Island Dance Festival Committee and this year’s Benefit Committee for your dedication to ensuring our fundraising remains strong this year and every year. At Fire Island Dance Festival, all are welcome. You are home.
Best wishes,

July 21, 2018 Welcome to Fire Island Dance Festival! Now in its 24th year, Fire Island Dance Festival is one of the most treasured and anticipated cultural events of our community. It has been called by one dance critic “the jewel in the crown of American dance festivals” and has been included several times in The New York Times’ most important dance events of the year. The Pines is justly proud to host such a premier event. By attending this year’s festival, you will be dazzled by some of the world’s best dance companies, will share in the community spirit of the Pines and will help Dancers Responding to AIDS in its impressive record of supporting both the arts and people living with HIV/AIDS and other critical illnesses. FIPPOA salutes the dance festival, the committee, the dancers and all who give so much to make this festival possible each summer. It is a special pleasure this summer to again welcome Fire Island Dance Festival.

DANCERS RESPONDING TO AIDS In a New York City apartment 27 years ago, two dozen dancers brainstormed what they could do to help so many of their colleagues who were battling AIDS. Denise Roberts Hurlin and Hernando Cortez, dancers with Paul Taylor Dance Company at the time, mobilized the group and ultimately created Dancers Responding to AIDS in 1991. It was the dance community’s first ongoing effort to raise awareness and money to directly help those living with AIDS. The vitality of DRA comes from the extraordinary compassion and efforts of the performing arts community to fund a safety net of social services for those in need. As a program of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, DRA helps support the essential programs of The Actors Fund, including the HIV/AIDS Initiative, the Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Initiative and The Dancers’ Resource while also providing grants to more than 450 AIDS and family service organizations in all 50 states. Funds raised by DRA and Broadway Cares help to ensure that those most in need have access to lifesaving medications, counseling, healthy meals, emergency financial assistance and more. DRA has proven since 1991 that what we do together makes a difference. ‘endless summer boogie-woogie’ work on paper, approximately 7x8” 2014 Jack Walls.
Jack Walls has been involved in the New York art scene for more than 30 years. Through the trepidaaous days of downtown Manhaaan in the 80’s.
